Same!! I have Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis and I love when people have an interest in Rheumatology. Especially because my doctors when I was looking for a diagnosis were not great..
Evie Day rheumatology is so interesting! And obviously so important for helping people like yourself!! I’m sorry you had a bad time finding a good doctor originally, really hope you found a good one now! Wishing you the best
“Hey guys! I’m Siobhan, a fourth year medical resident studying rheumatology.” The new intro is amazing! Couldn’t be happier for you Siobhan! All the best for the future :)
As a nurse, I'm happy to see a doctor that is so passionate about what she does and she smiles throughout the whole video. I'm glad the world has doctors like you! I just discovered your videos and I feel so proud of you! You definitely make the world better with your intelligence, skills and passion!
I can totally see you being an educator as well. I was in nursing school and majority of my professors were just reading off notes and never really explained things the way we would understand so majority of us had to relearn at home and in the library!
A football helmet was once used on a patient in the emergency. He needed this procedure done and he was a football player who collapsed on the field and was rushed into the casualty. There was no helmet available in casualty, just the tubing. Patients relative suggested he go to the car and get his helmet which was used exactly like you did. It has become the accepted alternative to use in an emergency. Keep up with the videos. Love them. Thanks from Janet in South Africa.
You are absolutely delightful to watch. If I lived in Canada I would want you as my doctor-your compassion, caring, intelligence, and love for what you do shines through in every video. Thank you for being who you are.
Loved the imagery behind this story. best part. Sometimes simple function is way better then sophistication. Love the videos. keep adding positivity to the world
You have a very positive and calming presence, I’d be thrilled if someone like you walked in the door to help me. Thank you for giving us peace during this scary time.
I love your enthusiasm for rheumatology. I just pray you keep that spirit. Too many rheumatologists in the US are so jaded and don't listen to their patients. I have been battling an undiagnosed issue for years. I finally got a rheumatology referral and was excited to go. I have a family history of autoimmune disorders and have all the classic vague symptoms. I spent about 20 minutes giving a thorough patient history and list of symptoms. He did a cursory physical exam, and then proceeded to tell me it was not rheumatological because my ANA was negative. He then, with a straight face, told me I may just have to learn to live with my symptoms without a diagnosis. That was it. I was stunned and disappointed.
The football helmet is common practice in almost every ICU and also is common in well equipped ER's, but in the case of our local hokey ER I don't believe they would have them available ever!! A must for ICU' s and ER's!!
I WAS AN critical care nurse and what you are sharing I have experienced many times. Scary the first time, but the need to stay very focused throughout focused my remembrance of horror are wiped away. You told us that action so clearly. Thank you.
Hi Siobhan. I love that I came across your channel. I am pursuing med school and also graduated from IU as well. And the craziest thing about this video is I met Mauricio and his wife as I helped take care of him as a patient of mine in the ED. This kind of came full circle because his wife had asked me if I was a doctor or planned to go to medical school, and then said that I need to study with Mauricio because he has had many students of his go on to med school. What a small world this is and what a coincidence I came across both of you.
A rheumatologist and dermatologist saved my life by catching my juvenile dermatomyositis so young!! people like y'all are so critical and important!! we need you!!
Bananas to think about how I started my time at college with you as a FIRST year resident with a boyfriend! Now youre here almost in fellowship with a HUSBAND! So fun to be on this journey with you Siobhan!
We had a football helmet too, but wasn’t as not as good as my colleague who went to school in Green Bay, WI. They had an Official” Green Bay Packer football helmet (unused). Nothing but the best when you live in Green Bay, WI!
The football helmet in the picture is the ticats, which is our Hamilton based NHL team. Hockey is more “Canadian” Hamilton doesn’t have national hockey team, so football is a bit more important to us in this city. This happened in the icu I work in
Wow🥰I found a doctor who’s vlogging in Canada ❤️I was actually hospitalized in Sick Kids for 3 Days because of Chest Pain. Just this Sunday, Monday and Tuesday....I AM VERY THANKFUL TO ALL MY NURSES, DOCTORS, PEDIATRICIAN AND MORE...ESPECIALLY MY NURSES❤️THEY WERE ALL CARING AND VERY NICE🥰BECAUSE OF THAT I WANTED TO GO BACK TO HOSPITAL😅I KNOW IT SOUNDS WRONG BUT I JUST MISS HOW CARING THEY WERE❤️😍ANYWAYS ALWAYS BE SAFE!?!?HOPE Y’ALL HAVE A NICE DAY
Sick Kids is an amazing hospital. My son spent some quality time in the NICU there and still goes for outpatient follow up. They are the gold standard.
I love the backpack idea! Thank you for being such an upbeat person, Siobhan. I have had several bad experiences with doctors, damaging my trust in them, eventho I know not all are the same: it’s hard to just ignore your own experiences.
I was so happy to hear you say a 4th year medical resident! So happy for you, I love your channel! You have inspired me to pursue a career in medicine.

As a "zebra" (I have a form of Ehlers Danlos Syndrome) and premed student, I cannot help but feel excited about your choice of specialty. After years of chronic pain and other mysterious, seemingly unrelated symptoms (which were often dismissed stress-related, among other things), my rheumatologist was able to solve the mystery. Watching your content for the last few years has been so inspirational, and I am certain that you will be a force of good for so many patients.
A diversion here : The lead picture on this vid hits home for me. The last few minutes my Father, my age, threw up blood in the sink. He 🚬 and 🍸, always stressed. When Drs. Ask me what cause of death was I say, 'he threw up blood in the sink.' This is why I'm obsessed with sustenance. Never squared what the actual cause was. Thank you for the 'Ask the Doctor' presentation. Siobhan, be safe n' be well!
I hope this doesn't get lost in the comments but it might. When you were talking about the best piece of advice, I instantly thought of my grandfather (May be rest in piece) who said, very similarly: your inner voice is God whispering to you. You just have to listen.
Your videos have kept me sane through a lot. I decided to accept the call of being a surgeon a little over a year ago and I didn’t have an overwhelmingly supportive group surrounding me. Your videos have kept my hopes alive and I really appreciate you showing what your path in medicine has looked like. Thank you.
I am a nursing student from China working in Canada, and I am glad I found your channel and it is very informative. Thank you. I like your Violin playing.

I’ve been watching your channel since the beginning and to hear you say “4th year..” is just awesome! Also, the backpacks are an awesome thing to recognize fellow med students. Hope you and Mark are staying safe!
I have been watching your videos for a while now and I got so excited when you said 4th year medical resident specializing in rheumatology! So happy for you! Love your videos!
We are both in our 80's and still believe in having a strong body and a calm mind. This was an excellent video and we learned a lot. We are doing research for our new YT channel that is all about healthy aging. Thank you so much and keep up the great work!
Working on a team alongside medical students, residents and fellows- I can say you seem like a truly wonderful doctor. The Canadian medical system is lucky to have you.
Thank you for going into Rheumatology. I've been seeing one every since I was a year old. It's a doctor that most patients have to drive far to see, either because of insurance or because there just isn't one near by. I know that Pediatric Rheumatologist are really needed and often even harder to see because of distance and there's not alot of them. When I was diagnosed with Juvenile Rheumatold Arthritis at the age of 18 months back in 1977, my parents drove and an hour to the biggest city for treatment. I also remember getting blood work and x-rays there as well. I've heard of kids who have had to drive a couple hours one way if they lived really far from a big city, We didn't get a local Rheumatologist who would see a child until 10 years later. Even till this day there's only one Rheumatologists in a town of 96,000 people but she is out of network, my in network doctor is an hour away. I would say out of the many Rheumatologists that I've seen through out my life about three of them I've felt really happy with and they've all been women, again that's just my experience. I've have awful experiences with male Rheumatologists, don't know why. Again, thank you going into this specialty. I would love to have you as my doctor. Any child would too.
So important to have a great physician with your diagnosis! Of note... my rheumatology attending was a woman too.. come to think of it all of our rheum docs are women at my hospital! And an amazing bunch!
My goodness you are one amazing human being! In every way possible. Just so humble and hard working! Well done! There needs to be more people like you in this world! 😊
I remember being in the emergency room when I was a young fellow here in New Brunswick. I specifically remember seeing a football helmet in there. Just assumed a foot ball player was in there. Never guessed it would of possibly been for that
I am so glad I found this vlog. Seeing someone so dedicated to the medical profession and such a caring, positive person makes me hopeful for the future. Being in the USA means we are not very aware of what differences exist between US & Canada re: medical training. I spent 47 years in a hospital Lab with specialty in Blood Banking and we had very little actual interaction with the physicians. I have always thought that patients would be better off if all departments worked as more of a team. Thanks again for your awesome videos.
I so admire your smile and how you always seem so happy! It’s nice to know that you have chosen the field of Rheumatology. I live in the USA and unfortunately it’s very difficult to find someone in that field that seems Confident and knowledgeable. I suffer with an autoimmune Disease called Sjogren’s and very few rheumatologist in my area seem to have an understanding of what that all involves. I wish you the best of luck. I’m sure you will bless many Patients along your journey. Much love, Tracy
So proud to hear you say 4th year medical resident! Been with you since the 1st year. The ICU at the hospital I precepted at also used a football helmet for securing the blakemore tube.
I am so proud of you Siobhan!!!! I feel like a proud Mom watching you achieve all of your dreams. I still say you need to move to Oklahoma so you can be my Rheumatologist.....You can bring Mark. There are plenty of Obstetric patients here too.
Thank you so much. You really touch my life in many ways. Listening to our inner voice is so important. You are such an inspiration. Thank you!! I got my TKR knee replacement surgery. The LONG road to recovery. Much love Cheers.
How amazing does that sound! Remember when it was I"m a first year resident' ? You've worked so hard and shared your long journey so well that it doesn't actually seem that long, it's flown by It's been a privilege to share it with you, I'm sure we would all agree and are very proud of you Siobhan.
Hey Siobhan, since you have had time in internal medicine I was curious if you've ever had a patient with Dysautonomia? I have "general Dysautonomia"; POTS, IST, OI, NCS. Here in the US there are only a few medical schools that teach about this autonomic disorder so finding a doctor who has ever heard about it is like finding a needle in a haystack. I have found the only doctors that have heard of it tend to be in internal medicine. Thank you for the life saving work you do! Stay safe on the front lines.
I wondered what the football helmet in our surgical icu was for, and now I know!! I’m an icu pharmacy technician and have ALWAYS wondered but haven’t ever had the courage to ask!
Hahaha I feel like there's so many of those moments in all medical education, that unknown thing that you just feel too afraid to ask about 😋 Thankfully theres youtube!
I love this Q&A video. :) Your voice has a soothing, story-teller quality to it that I find very comfortable and comforting. You actually made me tear up with that last answer; never lose your love for your passions! ❤🎻
This channel has changed my life. Siobhan, you are the most positive person! Your enthusiasm for life and your profession is inspiring and I strive to emulate that in my life and career. Also, congratulations on entering your 4th year! 😁
Hi Siobhan! I'm studying for the MCAT and I come from a Computer Science background. Sometimes it feels very dejected and overwhelmed by the materials, but watching your videos always helped remind what I'm working towards. I always get a little bit more motivated after watching your videos, so thank you! Whether I become a doctor or not, I'm still thankful!
It's actually been seven years since she started medical school, assuming medical school is four years long in Canada 4 years of medical school 3 years of internal medical residency And now she is in her 1st year of a two year long rheumatology fellowship
@@krabbypatty1962 You require an undergraduate degree before attending grad school - medicine, dentistry, law are all grad schools. Most students who are considering a health related career take a pre-med science degree. There are also a few students who took arts related courses and graduated with a BA that decide they wish to pursue a medical degree. If you had great grades and did well in the MCAT (or whatever course the various schools require) your chances are just as good as the science grads.
You are so calming. I came across your videos while I was fighting covid and they were such a Good source of info and much needed distraction❤️thanks so much and I too will be listening for my inner voice!
Loved rheum! One of my favorite rotations. Had to learn sooo much. Definitely solving mysteries! It was so fun incorporating so many organ systems, studies, imaging all for one diagnosis. Glad you found what you love!
Hi Siobhan just wanted to say I have been watching since the start of your channel. It warms my heart to see how much you love your work in the medical field but also how much you care for your patients. Keep up the great work!
I am currently a Nursing Student. Atm doing pre reqs. Hoping to become a ICU or ER nurse. And maybe in the future a Nurse Practitioner. Your passion for medicine has made mine grow founder. And get more and more excited to hopefully start nursing school soon. You literally are a idol of mine.
No way!! You studied with Mauricio ! I am a pianist but I remember accompanying and meeting a lot of his students when he was doing masterclasses in France. We must know so many musicians in common. He is the most delightful man and I learnt so much from him not only about violin but about great musicianship ❤️ !
I’m amazed to stumble upon a rheumatologist on a late-night UA-cam binge. I have a serious, complicated case of SLE with multiple comorbidities caused by the autoimmune attacks. :(
Yay! Love your videos. I start medical school Monday! I started my channel because I loved seeing your content and wanted to be able to look back on my journey in a similar way. Great video as always!!!
"HI, I'm Siobhan, a 3rd year medical resident" *meme of the person laughing* "HI, I'm Siobhan, a 4th year medical resident" *lasers come out of his eyes*
I really love this video. That is super great that you and your husband both love playing the violin. It also touched my heart to hear when you told about your former professor.
I just found you and enjoy your videos. I'm a retired nurse practitioner and also play the violin. It's good to know a young person like you is going into medicine in Canada. Greetings from South Carolina!

I’m just picturing every Canadian ICU with a glass case that says “break in case of emergency” and it contains a blakemore and a football helmet🤣
and the hammer has 'sorry' written on it :P.
I am surprised it wasn't a hockey helmet :P

We use a fluid bag on a pully system in our hospital in Australia. Those football helmets aren't part of our football so not readily available
I’m a little late to the party here, this exact system saved my bro-in law. Using a Georgia bulldogs football helmet in his case.

I’ve said this before...you’re so sweet and so bubbly. I wish every dr I met had your temperament. Thanks for sharing Mark with us!
Thank you so much. You really touch my life in many ways. Listening to our inner voice is so important. You are such an inspiration. Thank you!! I got my TKR knee replacement surgery. The LONG road to recovery. Much love Cheers.
Waiting for that violin duet with Mark 😊❤️
How amazing does that sound! Remember when it was I"m a first year resident' ?
You've worked so hard and shared your long journey so well that it doesn't actually seem that long, it's flown by
It's been a privilege to share it with you, I'm sure we would all agree and are very proud of you Siobhan.
Holy molly fourth year medical resident holy molly good work thank you for keeping our family and all we love healthy @Violin MD
One of my seniors from my school managed to get into medical school, so I recommended your channel to her!
This channel has changed my life. Siobhan, you are the most positive person! Your enthusiasm for life and your profession is inspiring and I strive to emulate that in my life and career. Also, congratulations on entering your 4th year! 😁
Omg the backpack thing is so cool! Reminds me of Hogwarts houses and their different house colors ☺️
Hi Siobhan! I'm studying for the MCAT and I come from a Computer Science background. Sometimes it feels very dejected and overwhelmed by the materials, but watching your videos always helped remind what I'm working towards. I always get a little bit more motivated after watching your videos, so thank you! Whether I become a doctor or not, I'm still thankful!
i love your personality so much. Siobhan u are so amazing, thank u for keeping spirits high in a crazy world!
Honestly can’t believe it’s been 4 YEARS since you started medical school
Keep it up
It's actually been seven years since she started medical school, assuming medical school is four years long in Canada
4 years of medical school
3 years of internal medical residency
And now she is in her 1st year of a two year long rheumatology fellowship
@@gingerbreadman1217 Do they have to study premed in Canada as well?
@@krabbypatty1962 I guess they do... I am not from Canada, therefore I am not sure
@@hissibling933 thanks for answering! , im not from Canada and where im from the admission is a lot different.
You are so calming. I came across your videos while I was fighting covid and they were such a Good source of info and much needed distraction❤️thanks so much and I too will be listening for my inner voice!
I hope you recovered ok! Glad you had something to bring you some ease. Stay strong!
I wish I had you as a teacher when I was in my graduate program. You are so descriptive and exciting to listen to! ❤️
I’d love a podcast on internal medicine! Like ward rounds: presentations and treatments
New intro! Fourth year resident, and rheumatologist specialty! Exciting to follow your path!
When I worked in the ICU 25 years ago we used a football helmet with the Blakemore catheter. Thanks for another great video!

We need you. I am glad when people go into nursing or doctoring
Gosh! It's so crazy how fast your intros are changing because the years are flying by!!
Also, we need more Mark!
No way!! You studied with Mauricio ! I am a pianist but I remember accompanying and meeting a lot of his students when he was doing masterclasses in France. We must know so many musicians in common. He is the most delightful man and I learnt so much from him not only about violin but about great musicianship ❤️ !
I can’t wait for the video when you give tips for someone that wants to go into the medical field!!!
I’m amazed to stumble upon a rheumatologist on a late-night UA-cam binge. I have a serious, complicated case of SLE with multiple comorbidities caused by the autoimmune attacks. :(
Love Siobhan all the way from Egypt 🇪🇬❤️
We are SO proud of you Siobhan. You’re such an amazing doctor!
Yay! Love your videos. I start medical school Monday! I started my channel because I loved seeing your content and wanted to be able to look back on my journey in a similar way. Great video as always!!!

Hi Siobhan! Finally the new intro I love it and been waiting for it! Purple is my favorite color too! Stay safe! 💜
I really love this video. That is super great that you and your husband both love playing the violin. It also touched my heart to hear when you told about your former professor.
You are such a bright shiny human in this seemly grey world atm so thanks for shearing your smile today! I wish you and mark well, be safe! 🤗💖
It's nice to see such a beautiful smile on your face. Keep smiling dear
