  • Join me for a day in the life of a doctor, specializing in rheumatology! Today we are seeing patients across the city in 3 different hospitals! We'll be doing injections, skin biopsies and helping to diagnose medical mysteries. You will meet the attending rheumatologist on service (Dr. Garner) and an internal medicine resident (Mary).
THANK YOU to the Dr. Garner and Mary for participating in this video and for the patients who allowed their specimens to be shown!

Thank you for studying to become a rheumatologist! My grandmother died of scleroderma in 1986 when there weren’t nearly so many treatments. I am an RA patient and have been getting infusions for 15 years. My dad has pulmonary sarcoidosis. My extended family also has Lupus and more sarcoidosis diagnoses. We are hit hard by the autoimmune diseases. The world needs lots more rheumatologists!

I have rheumatoid arthritis, and my rheumatologist is a wonderful doctor. I'm so grateful for her. She is the one that diagnosed me, and found out the reason that I had so many problems that no one else seemed to be able to figure out. I’m new to this community, only watched a few videos, I’m a med student in Turkey and can’t really see myself as a doctor 😅 but watching these videos gives me motivation because even though it’s obviously hard and is a high stress job it looks fun and I think she does a great job at balancing patient privacy and educational content as well as making it look easy even though it honestly is incredibly difficult. I’ve always been told real masters of their work make it look easy, though she may not be a “true” practicing physician yet I’m fairly sure with her love of the art of medicine and her determination will quickly lead to her success. Keep up the good work, you’re a role model for me and many others like me

When someone has a lot of experience and practice doing something, it can look easy to an outsider, but it may have taken years to get to that point. Here's a story I heard some years ago: there was a teacher who was know to be a highly skilled painter. One day, his students came to him and said, "Master, paint us a bird." The master swished his brush across the paper, and there was a bird. "So quick!" the students said. "Yes," said their teacher, "but it took me 20 years to paint that bird."
There are many different areas of medicine to explore, and you don't always know which one is right for you. If you can, ask established medical personnel questions about their field. Read books by doctors who talk about their experiences. If you can find it, I highly recommend In Stitches by Dr. Anthony Youn. He's a plastic surgeon who discovered his passion during a pediatric rotation. He talks about medical school and residency. I work in a large bookstore and I recommend his book to premed and med students.
Whatever you end up doing, do your best! Regards from the U.S.

@@joanhoffman3702 Thank you for your advice, I have read a few books by doctors and I love learning about their experiences and decisions that helped them develop into who they are today, it kind of drove me towards developing an interest in the surgical field, I will definitely search for the book authored by Dr. Youn, I watched a few of his videos and they’re also really interesting.
The story you mentioned is actually really cool, it kind of puts everything into perspective when you think about you, it took me 23 years to be able to say I’m a 3rd year med student in Turkey, in maybe 10 more years I can say it took me 33 years to be able to suture that leg... makes me feel young yet old weirdly enough. I hope you have a happy healthy life!

Diagnosed with RA in 1996. It’s strange how a person can wake up one morning a different joints are so swollen they won’t move. Within a few days it had affected my entire body from my neck down. Some of the worse pain I’ve ever known. I was so scared but now I rarely ever have a flare and rarely any swelling. My toes are turning under at the knuckles so that makes shoes a problem. Thank you for your interest and dedication to medicine and the healing world. Glad I found your videos. Blessings from TN.

Hi, I had this done some years ago too. When you get back from the ward, think about something continuous like a journey on a bus, a drive, a ride to somewhere… it has to be something continuous and easy to think of. Even better if it's a journey you're used to! Focusing that way will help you calm down and get a normal breathing going. Good luck ! :)
