  • Trapping predators has become a past time at the Waddell farm and as we've very well learned, trapping is an art. Michael Waddell us walks through how to dye and wax brand new traps to prepare them for action. After learning from others, here's the way he like to do it.

Our property is heavily populated with coyotes. (And hogs too 😡). I’m gonna spend more time this year while down there to set traps. I’m a rookie. Have only caught one in my life. Hope to get decent at trapping coyotes.

watch about putting that anchor in the wax sometimes it will cause you driver to stick to the anchor. No real need to get them rusted just degrease them and alot of times i use the wax and dye together in a deeper pot so when you pick them up its all in one. Glad to see you document learning something new and showing all the details especially something that can be soo controversial at times! Keep it up!!!

Good job. When pulled out of the water a light shake up and down will remove water drops and trap will dry quickly. You are doing it right. Don't let someone change your way.

One thing. I wouldn't use the acid but if you do neutralize with baking soda. I use acid to remove rust but it makes me nervous on some stuff. I make a paste with water and use a bristle chip brush followed with a good rinse or two or three.

If you ever get a badly rusted trap. Drop them in a bucket of vinegar. It takes a few days but it removes all rust and no metal. Works for bolts and car parts also.

A little over 100 years ago, at the end of the season, a trapper would leave his traps hanging in trees on his line. He never dyed or waxed them. But then, neither did he drive around his line on an ATV loaded with "necessary" gear such as cordless drills and cookie cutters?

i've never dyed or waxed my traps. i bought em new with the oil on em and just put em out and caught plenty of shit. i'm in california though so maybe the animals are dumber out here. they rust up quick enough, or a horse steps on them and bends them all to shit

@@deloachgator251 i live in california and get coyotes and raccoons all the time. i had a cat eating my rabbits and I set a trap for him but apparently he was getting chased by a coyote and ran thru my trap and i got the coyote, and then the cat hid in my toolshed. when I went to grab a shovel from the shed the fuckin thing hissed and jumped at me i nearly shat myself
