  • There are some fences we are called to replace that just take the cake, and this is one of them. This cedar fence is only 5 years old, but it's falling down and was ridiculously engineered.
Today we'll show you all the problems, rip it out, and replace it with a fence that will last.

Those cedar pickets were in perfect condition and could have been reused.

He mentions that at 2:45. I think what he meant was that it’d be too labor/time intensive.

If you would be okay with screw/nail holes everywhere. Some of it had two rails and some three rails. Non of it looked like it was consistent in rail placement. But you’re right, it was in perfect shape being only five years old.

My wooden fence in my backyard was built from a rig like that, Someone put a wood fence with posts every 8 feet apart, when they are supposed to be 4 feet apart. Hurricane Katrina blew it over so I took it apart and reassembled it in my yard. For posts I used scrap sign posts spaced every 4 feet. It still stands to this day .

I used some retrofit braces like that for a small 3 foot wide by 5 foot tall privacy fence for an HVAC unit. Seems to work OK for that application but I wouldn't use one on a perimeter fence or one subject to any wind loading.

I have a similar situation where I have the post almost two feet away from the house because of underground wire and foundation extending. I used a PT section of 2x6 under ground to prevent accidentally tamping wire near post and I have a flat top 2x6 top plate trim for the entire fence. For that section I think I'll need to attach the fence to the top w 2x4 like the rest of the fence, or I considered a mini gate.

Screwed fences are not only stronger but way easier to dismantle. I don't know why you didn't just take the pickets off 'n reuse them. Were the pickets bad?

Great video as always It’s a shame that you see it all to often people ripping off customers, getting over their heads and not giving a good effort to do the project and a bad experience for the customer. Always get references and look at a project they did over a year ago and recent projects and if your going to hire someone it helps if the company says fence company, ( not landscaping, handyman etc)

The pea gravel at the bottom of a post is from people who don't know fence. Probably 25% of my customers ask me to put gravel at the bottom of the post because they read an article about it. 20 years of putting up fence and the posts are always rotten at the top 6 inches. I tell people it's better to have the stability of a deeper post.

This was a great video! My exp is limited. I've said no to a couple jobs because of this, however the best job I've had so far, was one I said no to, but my references said I could do it to this client. I came back and only agreed to do it if A. They knew I was learning and had never done such a job before. B. They were willing to pay for me to go slower and learn. Its been over a year now and im still doing punch lists for them and have completed many reno jobs around their house.

I have never seen a wooden fence with a metal support post. Is that something new? Does it make the structure stronger than using a wooden support post.

Quick-Rok where we core-drilled out the existing concrete. Quikcrete where we were digging new holes next to the existing concrete.

Boy howdy! That’s a ton of stupid… How do you tell me you don’t know how to build a cedar fence, without telling me you don’t know anything about building a cedar fence?
However, it wasn’t exactly everything that could be done wrong. After all… The dog ears of the pickets were up.
It had that going for it!
Thanx for the good danged video.
