  • Yesterday as of recording this video the New Hampshire NASCAR Cup race had one of the more boneheaded officiating calls in recent memory. Unfortunately this is not a lone occurrence for the racing series. In the past year or so NASCAR has had numerous occasions of either bad calls or downright dangerous calls that have put their drivers in unnecessary danger. Today I want to pull all of these moments together to show why NASCAR's recent officiating blunders need to be addressed!

Not that I don't disagree with your sentiment on how NASCAR officiates their races but... You are not correct in NASCARS popularity. I feel like that is something older heads keep saying because NASCAR isn't the same anymore but NASCAR has never been so open arms about the community they bring in and has never been more diverse in their fan base. I believe they are doing well in that regard and are making moves to bring in a younger crowd. Problem is, you have the understanding of what NASCAR was in it's golden years and think that not having the same popularity is a failure. Motorsports is more niche than any other sport and ultimately has less fans around the world. Especially a fully American sport like NASCAR but like every other sport, popularity settles a bit. To think you were going to fill a quarter million seats every weekend for the next 50 years would be unintelligent. Yes NASCAR had it's hay day of bringing in as many fans as a football stadium because it was a spectacle and NASCAR was everywhere but ultimately... like any other sport, non die hard fans always leave. No offence but you sound like my father and I say the same thing... Your dead wrong. Believe me, I'm 26 years old and have been watching NASCAR since I practically popped out of my moms womb..... NASCAR is fine. Do I think it has it's flaws.. of course I do but people who just talk about how something is dead make no sense to me either. For such a dead sport it is weird to me the amount of time people spend taking shits, yet providing no intellectual problem solving methods that benefit. You may as well not even be in the comment section and watch a "more popular" sport.

    • @Ultimate23Dragon
      @Ultimate23Dragon 3 роки тому +9

@@lukazivkov960 I'll explain my perspectives further for you. I'm only a few years older than you. Like you, I too have watched NASCAR & other forms of racing since I can remember. To me, NASCAR has always been open to all people since the very beginning. There was a female in the first ever NASCAR race. There was already an African-American winner in the top division. NASCAR even went to other tracks outside of the supposed Southern roots. All of that before we were even though of. If NASCAR was as bad as those who don't know the sport as well as we do say it was, then I guarantee we would have *never* known the name Wendell Scott. We've always had the door open. It's up to other whether they want to go through that door or not.
Another truth is every sport is a niche sport, but some excel more than others. NASCAR just happens to be the motorsport that excelled in the 1980's-early 2000's. When NASCAR changed regimes to what is now known as "The Brainless France Era", that's when things started turning bad; Just doing change for the sake of change & not for the betterment & evolution of the sport. Over time another problem became even more apparent to old-school, new-school, & casual fan alike; Officiating inconsistencies & the fact it's become rampant. During NASCAR's heyday, the only time we had to worry about that was inconsistent calls that benefitted Dale Earnhardt Sr., & maybe another driver every once in a blue moon. But now it's mega-problematic & fans in all 3 categories are either mad, frustrated, or just laugh at NASCAR & leave.
Bringing in newer fans & a younger crowd is all fine, but trying to force the sport on them & neglecting current loyal fans isn't going to work. When you do that, you alienate your fan base, make them feel betrayed, & the "fans" you try to bring in leave anyway. It's even worse when you try to do it through pandering. That alienates people even more, & then no one wants to be apart of the sport & will advise people to turn away from it. When it comes to old-school/traditional fans, those who knew the bad stuff was coming left, & those who stay only do so because they want to have hope in NASCAR again... but eventually even those fans will reach a breaking point.
As for NASCAR dying, there are many times NASCAR, honestly, should have died; 2015 as a whole the best example. Heck if not for the fact I did videos constantly on it, I most certainly would have quit watching NASCAR altogether after the atrocity that was the entire 2015 season. There have been multiple multiple reasons why people have been leaving the sport: Bad officiating, change-change-change-change-change, noticeable favoritism towards specific teams &/or unpopular drivers, drivers retiring, money driver take over, bad commentary coverage (Looking at you FOX), pandering towards casual/non-fans, believes the sport is now embracing racism/sexism/secedism/heterophobia/propaganda/whatever else... NASCAR by itself used to be the 2nd biggest sport in the United States, & arguably the 2nd biggest motorsport in the world (Behind Formula 1). Nowadays NASCAR is seen as a laughing stock, & with it's notoriety in comparison to other motorsports, people outside of racing will think all motorsports are laughably bad because of NASCAR alone. It just goes on & on & on to eventually everyone will reach their breaking point & just stop watching (Like I nearly did after 2015).
NASCAR does need to fix all of that, but the damage has already been done, & it's unfortunate other motorsports had to suffer, mostly because of NASCAR's ineptitude. Can NASCAR fix it all? Yes, but that will take a long time & that's if they survive.

I was at this race in person. I was sitting in Turn 1 where Kyle Busch and Martin Truex Jr wrecked. The rain did come down rather quickly, probably quicker than expected. Even the NBC commentators said that there was dryer track in 3 and 4 versus 1 and 2 that got soaked quick. The track color changed super quick. Nonetheless, I get Kyle’s frustration. I think NASCAR did the right thing by starting the race, as it wasn’t raining at the start. The track actually looked really good. As far as darkness, it was getting dark quick too, and the fact that it was cloudy didn’t help. It was darker in person than it looked on TV. I was listening to the scanner and spotters started saying it was getting very dark and they were having trouble, and that was still when the 21 was in the lead. NASCAR also had to give a 10-lap warning if they were calling the race early, so using the chatter and the darkness, I think they made the right call. Could they have made the last 8 laps? Probably, but who knows. Regardless, NASCAR did a good job using the spotters’ chatter to say “10 to go” and ultimately end the race.

Officials letting the field run green with a stopped car in the middle of the racing line. Track owners rebuilding their tracks to create more wrecks at the expense of good racing. Then there's the whole next gen crash test fiasco. It's been 20 years since we lost Dale, and everyone's gotten too complacent. NH rain aparently was a cloud burst, said it caught em out, and I lean to believing them.
COTA was a low visibility rain road race, and was indeed approaching unacceptable levels. But MTJ and his wreck was plain poor wet weather driving on the part of the car he hit, braking mid straight 500 yards early in the rain is what I'd like to call a sea mine, very similar to that truck accident where they didn't throw the caution.
NASCAR needs a few things, officiating standards that dictate 'darkness' if it is X lumens outside on track/pit road, shorten the race to a final 10 laps or so.
Nascar needs to finally use those LEDs they tested in the ALL-STAR Bristol race as indicators on road courses or in the wet.
Finally, at road courses they need to use the marshaling system F1 uses, they stop extremely long caution periods for relatively fixable incidents, they help inform spotters, and even the HUD in the LCD screens can be used to directly inform the drivers on their dash without the need of a spotter to relay flag info, combined with the LEDs possibly changing color both technologies can relay information, improve safety, and the visual experience the same way they do in IMSA, WEC, F1 and many other series.

Not every race needs to be a 500 mile endurance slog, we aren't the WEC. Events like the Daytona 500 and Coke 600 get kinda diminished when the weekly 3/2 miler gets 500 mile events. Most events can do without the first stage, just delete it, move the remaining stage break to halfway through, and it makes more sense to pay out points halfway through the race.

It's definitely been an issue for quite a while. The 2001 All Star Race, Fall Kansas 2007, the 2009 Daytona 500, and 2014 Coke Zero 400 all come to mind quickly. I went to Daytona for the 500 in 2009. It was raining for quite a few laps before they threw the yellow. But it has been getting much more frequent with NASCAR being inconsistent. They've been quick to call some races when the track was salvageable. And they have dragged out others, even long after the track was lost.

Here's the thing, you're absolutely right @11:00. Almost anyone in the world of "safety" or "compliance" has a set of "standards". Like, "If I can't legibly read a sign with 1" tall letters from 100' " then the race has to stop cuz it's too dark, or whatever. "If a sheet of paper bleeds ink after 60 seconds, it's too much precipitation." Or something like that. It doesn't matter "what" the standard is; but ya gotta have one. There's a standard so everyone knows what to expect. NASCAR just seems to wing it from week to week and doesn't have a lot of regard for their own accountability. Standards protect everyone.

NASCAR needs to improve with alot of stuff mainly safety. When I saw cole custer and Truex's wreck at cota I thought "It wouldve been way worse if it was a dry race". Look at COTA, 3.4 mile long road course track. One big flaw with it being the barriers. the entire barriers down the back straight are metal except for edges of where track marshalls can enter the course.
Before the race I even thought that most of the mayhem would be up towards turn 1. Only time will tell when all the drivers decide to go down pit road at once and stop racing when something like sunday happens

Friend of mine pointed this out:
"The race getting cut short last night may have been forced by the track, rather than NASCAR.
NHMS's agreement with the town prohibits racing after 8:30 pm, for noise reasons. I'd assume that includes things like burnouts and cars driving around the garage area, so they needed to make sure everything was wrapped up by then. They called 10 to go with barely 20 minutes to the deadline."
That said, 20 minutes is more than enough time to run 18 laps.

Three Thoughts: 1. Say what you want, but I think it was amusing that the week after Kyle called out "Wrecky Spinhouse," he wrecked and finished last. Stenhouse finished the race.
    2. Kyle crashed out because he was first, but also because maybe other drivers recognized that it was a dodgy track and were a little more careful. It's no surprise that Hamlin saved his care from the wall and finished well; he's just a more careful driver.
    3. Kyle should have been suspended for trying to intimidate the pace car. He might be NASCAR's best driver, but he certainly is in the top 30 of class acts.

Note, I really love NASCAR, but out of an european perspective I have some toughts on it. @4:25 I tought on road courses there they have wipers and as you already mentioned they can change tires, so what´s the real matter here? @5:41 Maybe they should add wipers and spray to their set ups so that at least the drivers can see something. I mean, the grills may bee still full of mud, but maybe NASCAR gets innovative with that. @6:45 actually I tought they have mirrors on road courses and don´t need spotters like in any other league but there I might be wrong. So with less visibility should rise the caution and with merely no spotter who can´t see the driver the more they gotta be careful. It´s not flat footed like on oval. So with that points NASCAR has to adapt to the very danger and manner of road racing. Maybe they should stop thinking: "We did that always like this" and watch more to other leagues like imsa or even WHELEN. Any leauge has its very beauty and strengh but safety is universal and fun also ;) @8:24 NASCAR and the drivers really are not only the spotters, so if something like this happens, a yellow should be thrown Immediately, especialy on ovals where there is constantly high speed. But even the drivers should be more aware as they not only rely on the spotters. As like: when there is no caution and the spotter says nothing, I only go for points and hold on. Don´t get me wrong here, they are all pos and know what they do, but maybe sometimes the routine sets in and under some circumstances this may happen. @9:30 Rain during oval with this tires, That is unacceptable! This could be avoided and fortunately lead to no mayor injuries or else!
