Granny charger - a term coined when EV's first arrived on these shores. When you pushed the range of your short range EV to visit your granny. You would pull your granny charger out to charge at granny's house. This was because; 1. There was no EV infrastructure. 2. You know she wouldn't ask for some money for the leccy you used. 😁
Collected my new Niro EV 4 days ago and love it. I had the old eNiro which was also an amazing car, but the new model feels and drives so much better. The Infotainment software is excellent, as always with Kia. I wouldn't go near a VW EV, overpriced and over hyped.
This Niro has roof rails so can take a proper set of roofbars (not the ones that attach around the door frame and damage seals )making it more useful than my VW ID3 and also the Kia EV6 for bringing Kayaks surfboards etc.
Great review, thanks. Yes Kia are a bit more honest about range and efficiency, my old eNiro GOM was very accurate, to label it as the Guessometer for Kia is a bit unfair as very little guessing. Yes the granny ring on a bike is the slowest, but not sure why cyclist call it the granny. Cf the ID3, no comparison the Kia wins hands down.
I test drove this in GT-Line, top trim available in Australia. It handled nicely, great visibility and heads up display is just as good as the EV6 one. I think it's one of the best EVs available if you don't mind FWD, for me it feels like a more futuristic Camry.
I currently have an ID3 and am selling it and getting a Niro EV in 2 weeks. To me it just seems like a well equipped, solid EV package that you could happily have for 5 years or so.
did you sell your id3 privately i have a 2021 id4 and I'm sorry i didn't buy a kia its definitely not worth the money i paid for it. what's the road noise like in the new niro
No memory seats, slow DC charging and 360 camera are my only biggish gripe’s, minor ones are the parking sensors, no sunglasses holder, dashboard glare and I’d have liked a sunroof/panoramic roof. OTR quoted price €46k that better inc floor mats 😂
Thanks for the Kia Niro EV review. First Irish review I have seen and much appreciated. Trying to make my mind up on buying one and you have helped! Chris.
I was looking at the EV6 but feel that the Niro is coming in at around 25% cheaper when comparing spec to spec. Add to this the waiting time and the Niro to me is the better option.
Again a great detailed video as always Nobby however my gripe on this one is as you say with the lack of availability on these models considering the amount of advertising and marketing Kia Ireland are doing to encourage orders when they clearly can’t come anywhere close to full filling these anytime soon? Pitty though it’s a lot of customers that will be missing out and taking their business elsewhere 🤷♂️
Agreed. They are all at it. I have to hang onto my car for longer as I just can't get a new EV at the moment. Originally my lease was to end in January.
Yes, there are 4 cluster modes. 3 are different dials options (white dials, blue ones, or greyish ones). The fourth option is 'dynamic' mode which looks like the digital speedo and range counter on my old Soul, but with a dynamic background that changes according to the time of day and the weather. It even has splashes running down it when it's raining haha!
Good review as always. I'd honestly take this over the EV6. Sure, it's a bit fancier inside the EV6 but it feels 'squished' with the low roof. and the boot&frunk total is only ~35 litres between the two (495 litres, versus 532). How is the EV6 boot so small for the size of car!? And the Niro is a much more pleasant car in the city for its size. Still, disappointing to see the price go up to €43/44k - Kia had a great opportunity to hurt VW/etc here by keeping the Niro at the old e-Niro price....
I noticed Audi put their price of the Q4 up on the car builder last month so I'd say all cars are gone up in price for 23. Its a shame really as I feel like customers are now being pushed too high to a point that most people will be forced to downgrade the size of their car if they change next year. I understand inflation but some of the increases are to cover lack of supply I reckon.
Great review. They're getting there with a range of 480 and relatively short recharge time. Would they not squeeze another 20 kms out of the battery. I'm sure a range of 500 would be a game changer for anyone in the market for such a vehicle.
@@gerryheery1388 In use? Not much. For marketing: probably significant. It's like 201 km/h top speed versus 195, or 10.1s 0-62 mph or 9.8s. And some people start the search for their new car on comparison sites, using a filter 'range > 500 km'. In actual use, 20 km's can make the difference in certain circumstances, but on average it's not going to make much of a difference.
Check out the difference in “miles / kWh” depending on which data you use: 1. 699 miles driven, 162 kWh actually used (based on total put in over 4 charges less what is left right now) = 4.3 kWh; 2. From the App data …. 699 driven and 189 kWh used = 3.7 m/kWh; 3. Again from app .. 624 miles LOGGED (!!), 115.19 Net kWh used (this is the 189 used less the 74 kWh of regeneration) = 5.2 m / kWh; 4. And finally … what the car has been showing on the display for each of the snapshots immediacy before a charge = 5.1 m / kWh. If we take the WLTP of 287, and divide by 64.8 kWh max battery available = 4.4 real life expected. So, I think I’m somewhere between 4.4 and 5.1 … what do you think??
Not all the kWh delivered on charging are used in the battery - some is used to heat the system (or cool it if it is too hot) and there is not a 100% efficiency in getting the power from the charger to the battery, nor again getting it from the battery to the electric motor. The WLTP figure is probably optimistic as an average for most people, probably a realistic average range from 100% would be more like 250 miles. (EV database put it at 235 miles, but also suggest combined urban and highway driving in cold weather as 200 miles, and 270 miles in mild weather.) If 250 miles that works out to be 3.86 m/kWh on average.
Nobby which Dublin Dealer did you test drive the Niro EV Cityscape Green from as I have on order but haven't been able to see the colour in person, but have the option of getting Mineral Blue in the next 2 weeks? so would like to view both before making my mind up.
I might have missed the answer to the question, but am I correct in assuming VW should be worried? If so, on what basis? Price, equipment, comfort, driving, performance, efficiency, range or availability? I’d certainly test drive both, but would be interested in some facts on how others think they compare.
@@NobbyOnCars I think VW will worry more about the MG4 than this as a competitor for the iD3. This, while smaller than the iD4, is significantly more practical than the iD3 and more likely to pull choice away from the ID4.
