    Matt,
    If you're still fighting the surface floaters: I use two 5 gallon buckets with 1/4" wire mesh stuck between the two of them. Inside bucket (#1) has the bottom cut out to allow water to flow down through the mesh, and the exterior bucket (#2) has holes drilled through the bottom and around the sides near the bottom for draining. I use this system for cleaning all the leaf drops into my pond once a year. I'm flipping out the muck like you do, let it dry, and then move it to a final pile in the garden.

      I really appreciate all of the ideas and info you share! At this time, I was working with very limited time and tools. The good thing is that I have plenty of time to plan out the future work now that I've had time to get hands and eyes on the property.

      @@MatsukawaZaraki - I figure I'd just suggest the tool I believe you could access quickly from your local hardware store versus what can be shipped around the states.

      Absolutely! The whole area is eventually going to need a pretty big reconstruction, so tools like those will be super helpful to keep things efficient ☺️

    Beautiful! Really nice to have the locals help. I guess they have decided you are serious about preserving the property. Is the basin with the water your water source from the spring?

    • @MatsukawaZaraki
      @MatsukawaZaraki  Місяць тому +1

      @terrycavender they see, hear, and feel just how committed i am and they also want to see this property restored just as badly as I do! Long ago that was the water source for the household, but not for a long time. We have a source from the mountains that gets piped into town, and I will have a video very soon about the spring cleaning day. I was so lucky to be a part of it while I was there! 😊

      @@MatsukawaZaraki I'm sure they had their worries at the beginning before getting to know your intent for the property. You're saving their heritage. 👍

      @terrycavender absolutely, and totally understandable! It's gotta be a little stress inducing when a complete foreigner buys the most important and historical piece of land in the area! They all now know that I only have the best of intentions and am there to preserve and integrate, not change and bastardize.

    Fantastic!
    Wondering if too many branches were cut back at 10:00? I thought they might provide cover from the road?

    • @MatsukawaZaraki
      @MatsukawaZaraki  Місяць тому +1

      @jonathangallant-mills6434 there is a huge hedge that provides plenty of road blockage to the left of the camera there. You can see it earlier in the video when I walk out to the road and back 😊

    @7:45 The animal appears to be a badger (tanuki). I looked at it a good 10 times on hi res and came up with a fat grey squirrel. Well, grey squirrels are American and Japanese squirrels are tiny and almost bright orange in color, so that can't be it. The next larger animal in those woods is the badger, which I have never seen in the wild in Japan, but the length and gate are correct, I think. Ask Chiba San the mayor, since he's likely aware of it!
    I grew up in Kochi Prefecture, and practically lived in woods just like those for 12 years of my life. Bugs and small birds were around but very limited furry wildlife, though. I saw 3 squirrels in 12 years. The recent change is amazing. Even the monkeys are back on Shikoku now, although I have not heard about bears being back on Shikoku yet.

      It is such an incredible area and country overall, I really hope that it stays this way for many generations to come!
