The following video is a demonstration of how hitboxes (particularily on the hunter) work in Left 4 Dead. I originally made this for my CAL league team and made it hard to find, but since CAL died and this got linked to quite a few forums I renamed it....

it's the hit boxes vs. the actual model. A similar issue was also found in Enemy Territory when players crouched. But that was a long time ago and doesn't need to be explained.

I never realized how far apart hunters can be from their hit boxes. Very useful video.
Great video. I had figured out you had to melee earlier than what felt right but I wasn't sure why. This explains that. Thank you for posting.
Valve and Hitboxes, a long story.
It's complicated. Long story short: Most source engine games buffer the network input before it displays it.
This makes the game a lot smoother, and you don't notice it much when using hitscan (instant hit) weapons, as the server hit detection code 'rewinds' by your ping and the buffer delay to figure out whether, at the moment you fired, you would've scored a hit.
Unfortunately, it doesn't play so nicely with projectile and melee weapons. It's a tradeoff, but one that mostly works well.
Early, on-time, spammed = all broken.
I heard bullets are lag compensated but melee shoves are not. Thus you want to aim for the white box to melee but you want to aim for the visible Hunter if you want to shoot him.
I knew about the issue but didn't know that the distance between the pounce hitbox and the avatar were actually that far. Thanks.
Now I know why some people will shoot ahead of a mid air hunter. Very useful info in this video, 5 stars.
his punch just has a long reach. (longer than what is visibly represented, like the pyro's flamethrower in tf2)

@cheiniks 1 hit box total allowed by consol out of the 8 hitboxes you can bring up. You have to specify which playslots hitbox you wish to display. I.E you join as Zoey and are allocated Player Slot 4 you're friend joins as a boomer and is allocated player slot 7 you'd need to specify that respective slot as the hitbox displayed and that would apply until the command is removed (so si can respawn as different characters and still have their hitbox displayed!)
@chumplol I know you posted 7 months ago, but I wanted to help clear this up for you. The lagcompensation affects hitscan weapons (rifles, smgs', pistols, etc etc... just "guns" basically). Melees are not lag compensated because they are not hitscan. They're like the melee weapons in TF2. You can get hit from what seems like a mile away because at the time your opponent started swinging you were in range, despite being vastly far away on your screen.

Great idea... Unless you're outta ammo and or reloading. You can melee whilst reloading. Some folks also prefer to use the uzi... Can't really skeet with that can you? Skeeting is mainly focused on the shotgun.
Besides it's rare for most people to be aware of their surroundings in either game... Let alone be able to skeet and or hunter punt. However I think hunter punting is easier for most than skeeting. Althought skeeting is funnier!

everything in the game has a moving hit box that will be slightly ahead of movement- which still doesn't explain why tank can get melee hits from 20 god damn feet away :P

It can only be done on a local host.... Which is why I used 1 person... cuz my lousy 10mb fibre optic broadband apparently can't handle more than 2 people. :s I also know you can only show 1 set of hit boxes... numbered 1-8 in reference to which player's hit box you wanna see. Mess around with consol commands... I think it's something like show hitbox 1-8.... probably wrong it's been a while
Hitboxes are seperate for lag compensation but when you shoot the server compensates for the lag and the shots connect but for melees it does not hence why you have to do it earlier
Great vid. Shows why you want low ping. Now you know why on higher ping servers your gun play seems fine, but you can get owned in melee battles.
You have to have sv_cheats 1 so local host or a server you have box access too work best.

1-8 depends on the player slot of the hunter you are trying to see hitboxes for.
e.g.
sv_showhitboxes 1 "nope nothing"
sv_showhitboxes 2 "yay hitboxes"

Huh. I always wondered why I hit the hunters even though I thought I meleed too early. Now I know. it makes sense in hindsight.

It was done on a local server with just two people... Because otherwise my PC would go poof... But if the Private Server has sv_cheats 1 then yes. Using the Command sv_showhitboxes 1-8 you can view hitboxes. However only 1 set of hit boxes can be displayed at a time I believe. I could be wrong.

Thanks for the vid. I always wondered why other survivors randomly spamming would reliably catch me then I couldn't do it when I was on survivor.
correction it can only be done with sv cheats 1.... just most folk cannot do that on actual servers... my bad!
@cheiniks No because that would be called cheating. The idea behind the hitboxes is that they are invisible... Otherwise everyone would be able to hit them all the time. It should also be noted that only 1 hitbox can be visible at a time.
If it has nothing to do with meleeing early than why does meleeing early work and meleeing normally does not. Further more why have Valve admitted that the facts behind this video with regard to the hitboxes themselves is correct???? "detached" or not... The fact is this method works and that's what the video is here to demonstrate.

my connection is 10mb fibre optic broadband. My PC is custom built with a duel core processor, an ATI Radeon HD 4670 card. I have a HD realtek audio card and a really nice mobo and HD. So I'm pretty sure.
You wanna test it out... Get and friend and host a local.... Valve themselves even admitted hitboxes exist seperately.
wouldn't ping or whatever play into this also?
like because when you have slow internet the information will be reaching you later than it actually happens (at least in online vs).
well if it was for lag compensation the hitbox should hit later not sooner.

Look up a video called "How Not To Suck At L4D: Lesson 1 Skeets"
So that's why melee push is soooo looooong. If you don't know what I mean, let horde overwhelm you, do push and try to spin off. When standing in corner, you can easily push at least 10 zombies - you have only to make a little move with your mouse in horizontal angle :P
And 1 question. What Zoey has on her right wrist?

It's not a 25... It's Arking (When a hunter is gonna come down verticaly on you) -I.E You have to look directly up to see the pounce-
Where he (DargoTrox) vertically pounces from the roof straight down is only like a 12pt pounce.

It not hard to swing Hunter off ur back while u meele.

nope. Dargo lives in NC and I am in the UK.... 3000miles+ distance difference
@Kytten9 well dont care bout "cheating" if its allowed by console and 1 hitbox as in SI hitbox or are CI included?
So if we're getting the hitbox information, why can't the game just animate the avatar where the hitbox is instead of behind it? Probably a stupid question technically, but it just doesn't make sense to me.
this video isn't for the benefit of the smartasses who already knew that. Especially considering the video starts with the caption: Ever wonder why when you melee a hunter in it's face you still get pounced? - If you already knew why. Then you may have guessed the theme already.... But still gg.
i don't think you realize that the htibox display ALSO has lag and is not 100% accurate as to where the hitbox actually is.

@Shadowdog7 Oh friends are fine. I mean pugs. Most my friends are USA and I'm UK so timezones and what not. I hate hate hate pug/pub matching because people don't have common sense. Think they're pro and fail or call hacks everytime they get a lag spike. I have a very volatile temper and if I'm in a game with an idiot I either end up shooting them, bitching at them until they leave or until I'm vote kicked. Meh I'm a bitch I get that!

@Shadowdog7 rare? Fuck I'd be happy if a pug could knock a hunter OFF YOU when they're right friggin next to you instead of reloading to fail at shooting him off.... Skeeting is just nigh impossible in a pug... Jeez...
