Great video, for so many reasons. And the final video I needed to pull the trigger on the 68...it’s just preference, but I was feeling the warmth and serenity of the 68, and then the wife came down the stairs and without looking at the screen she was able to identify the one I liked. Done, super appreciated.

its a bad review of the 68 because its EQd badly for the 68 circuit with the decreased negative feedback design of the 68. The bass needs to go down inverse to volume on the 68. Like bass at 2 with volume over 4. EQ'd the same as the BF 65 isn't how 68 users Eq them. If they are Eq'd properly the demo would properly show drive and break up at diff volume settings comparison.

Beautiful. Thank you. I'm only now in the market for a Princeton and this comparison solidifies and validates my previous assessment-i like the '65. The '68 sounds like it has a 'vintage filter' applied to it. I'm sure, without an A/B, it sounds fantastic, but immediately next to the '65, it sounds duller, muddier, flatter.

I've seen many vids on the PRRI 65 and 68. This is a good one, and the first one that shows the 68 has its place. In several clips it sounded better, particularly in the first third of this video. It's got a darker and more rounded liquid syrupy tone.

I have a 68 custom Princeton reverb and I realized the secret of how to set it. The issue with the amp is a resistor on the tone stack that makes this amp more like a bassman amp. Hear me out. The issue is not that the amp has more bass, it’s that there is a preset amount of low mids. Because of this, even if you turn the bass off, there’s always a very present low end.
However, set the volume to 5, the treble to 8 and the bass to 5 and turn the volume on your guitar down to 3-4 and you will have the beautiful fender clean sound, very much like a standard Princeton. By raising the treble and bass, you effectively scoop the low mids that make this amp sound weird in a lot of demos. Even better, turn up the volume knob on your guitar and you have the best breakup in a small fender amp that I have heard.
This took a while to get to. You cannot just leave your guitar volume on 10 and set the amp the same as you would another Princeton. This amp is it’s own thing. Explore it and you’ll be rewarded!

    • @IgnazioCarbone
      @IgnazioCarbone 4 роки тому +4

Hi, after months of trying and frustration I realized the same thing: there isn't too much bass, there is "muddiness" in the low-mids. I thought about a speaker change but eventually ended up with an EQ pedal. First I tried the Boss GE-7 (good for the price but noisy) and then went for the Orange "Two Stroke", a clean boost with a two band parametric EQ. The issue is around 400 Hz (more or less). Cut some db's around that frequency and the muddiness/darkness will disappear. You can boost some high frequencies if you need (carefully) or you can use a clean boost. I've got the amp treble knob on 8 and the bass knob accordingly to the guitar and the overall amp volume (usually between 1 and 5).

@@IgnazioCarbone This is very useful tip. I had both amps before. But really struggled with the muddiness of 68 and couldn't get rid of it even with bass all the way down. You are right it is the mid which is not possible to be adjusted on the amp. An EQ pedal is a simple and good solution.

The stock speaker in the '68 does the amp a very serious disservice. The circuits are inherently different (obviously), and the '68s do have a more bass heavy sound with the added earlier breakup, but by cramming a cheap, $35 Celestion Ten 30 Fender really shot themselves in the foot. I have a limited edition '68 Princeton in blue tolex. Aside from the colour, Fender also upgraded the speakers in these amps to a G10 Greenback. The difference in sound, clarity and tone is NIGHT and DAY. Yes, it may not be that shimmering 'classic' Fender sound, so it's not for everyone. But the addition of a proper speaker really opens these amps up, lets them 'breathe' and perform at their full potential. Don't write them off so quickly. All that aside, this is a truly excellent side by side comparison, probably one of the best I've see. Good show.

Definitely an interesting comparison. Does Fender put the same speaker in each of these amps? They also ahce different circuits, so comparing same tone settings side by side may not indicate what one amp can really do versus the other if the tone is re-adjusted. I see bass is never less than 5. I'd drop the bass a little more on the 68 and give it a little more treble to see where it goes, and to run them with the same speaker. I have a vintage 73 Princeton Reverb with a Weber 10F150T and run the bass around 3 and treble around 7 most of the time.

@@Arthur_My_Dear yeah jumping the bass resister is good. Still more than enough bass, but the pot is now usable instead of stuck on 1 or 2. I had a g10 vintage before the allesandro. It was really smooth and nice. Maybe even better for dirt. But the allesandro was balanced, with that amp needs imo.
Volume aside. I just much prefer a 12 inch speaker, even at low volume. The drri just sounds bigger and fuller. Either amp will need an attenuator to open up at home anyways. Good luck!

I really like the way the 68 custom breaks up but after playing it I realized it's a lil too bassy even with the bass all the way down. I wonder if a speaker swap could fix it or would it have to be modded? If it's a mod then I'd rather go with one of the 65's with a 12.....maybe get them to do what has been done to the 68 with the tonestack and negative feedback to get it to break up like the 68. Anyone done this or looked into it? I wonder what mods could make one have the cleans of the 65 but with breakup more like the 68? Or just get the OCD pedal and the 65 hahahaha. Easier!

I have the 68 Princeton they are bass heavy and the bass control does little but then I found out about R34 resistor mod it's very easy to do it allows you to turn the bass down .

    • @johnwatkins677

For the R34 mod just search the internet. If you remove the chassis you will see the resistor coming off the bass control it's not part of the circuit board.
Don't clip the resistor if you want to test this mod just get a piece of wire with two alligator clips and attach each side of resistor and try it then if you decide to go ahead just cut a piece of wire bent like a staple and solder each side of the resistor. Job do I hope you like it.

I tried the 68 (and currently try to buy one) and this video doesn't really do justice to it. It almost reaches full volume at 5 and then start to break up in a very cool way (almost sounds like a fuzz)... But it's already loud. You sure can already play too loud in your bedroom. On stage tho you'll need a mic if you want your sound to be clean.

@@MrJoshEsc4p3 the 68 is different than the 65. If you want the fender bright clean, you want the 65. The 68, I wouldn't call it muddy, it breaks up quicker, not as much headroom. I like the 68 but I'm a lead player. If you play more rhythm, you want the 65. It's not muddy though, the 68 that is, it's just not as bright. I don't like the speaker in the 68 but that was an easy fix but it still sounds different than the 65. It's hard to explain.
