    These amps are both just oozing tone from their luscious tubes and speakers. Both so good I could not decide although I lean toward the Celestion speakers. Let me know which one you prefer in the comments.

    65 wins for me... I've had both of these amps and got rid of them both. Now I want my 65 back, and I already have a 65 Deluxe Reverb! For smaller gigs and recording, the Princeton is perfect.

    PS - I like so much the 65 that Im trying to build one myself. Im just someone who likes to put the hands to work, so its just a gigantic task. Drawing PCBs by hand and so on... Creativity is what you need living in Brasil hehe. Wish me luck please guys!

      Mate if you are going to build one forget the PCB’s do it old school like the originals. Point to point check out Mojotone and others they supply ladder boards and all the components you need. If I was building one I wouldn’t bother with printed circuits. Old way is easier for maintenance and repair, do yourself a big favour and load it with a 12” speaker of your choice celestion alnico blue is a good one. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed buddy.

O never been out of pcbs... gonna teu most if poder cost which are ultrageous here in Brasil...To give a picture: a single 2sjxxx can reach about (If I can find it) 25,00 usd. If I have to import reaches 75,00 usd... About the speakers I use Electroharmonix... Celestions and Eminence are hard do fins and a little expensive. But thank foi again!

    I already had a 68 Custom Princeton Reverb (slightly modded including a Celestion Gold speaker) and the 65 Princeton Tweed which I also threw in a Celestion Gold swapping the Eminence Cannabis Rex into my Blues Junior. The Junior took an instant liking tot he Cannabis Rex and the Tweed loved the Gold. I just order the 65 Princeton Reverb reissue via Sweetwater. I am a HUGE fan of the Princeton's and find they give me enough volume for the venues I play in, especially if the house has a solid PA system. I play in a contemporary non-denomination church and we cover a lot of modern songs (Elevation Worship/Jesus Culture, Passion, Bethel Worship, Hillsong United, etc, and these amps mixed with the rest of the band mates (lead guitarist, acoustic guitarist, keys, aggressive drummer and bass player, and vocals) via the PA system in our church gives me a lot of umph with the various OD pedals, pre-amp pedals, and others. I run in stereo and will sometimes use Deluxe Reverbs, but often return to these Princeton's. Light weight, easy to store, transport and love pedals. BTW Rich, a big Thank You for the demo and using the Baja Telecaster and HSS Strat. Don't know where you live but I sure wouldn't mind taking a lesson from you to learn new techniques. Awesome guitar work you do on all of your video's. PS: Yes, the 68 does have a "darker" tone to it. I changed pots in the treble and bass positions just to give me a less dark/muffled tone. Made a difference yet not so much as to ruin it. Always looking for the tonal quality that makes my ears "Happy"

    I loved your video. At first I thought your intro was a little long, but then I saw the message and time stamp to where the talking started. One of my pet peeves is Reviews that start with 20 .minutes of jamming. Your actual review was straight forward though I would have liked knowing the settings on the amps. In another comment your reply said you went into the DAW so was the sound shaped from that or the amps? The microphone placements are different, so are you single the speaker placement are different? I can't imagine they would be. Lastly, is the Celestion Greenback standard in the 68?

    I'll take the 68 all day. A little more low end in that bassman circuit. Gotta love it through the 10" greenback. It was made for it. The 65 probably cuts through the mix better but that's what EQ's are for. I'll probably have to get a hold of my guy Zach at sweetwater now thank you very much. I just got a 2020 pretty much brand new 65 at a steal, it did die on me which sucks .. is not the fuse ..i think is the power transformer.. 2 days prior it did a very loud crackle that stoped when i tapped the volume knob, last moments where me Playing at 9 vol or 10 volume started droping slowly and then, just like when you kill a Terminator, the light went off.. i was using a Bugera attenuator, which I don’t believe was the cause .. anyway i got massively out of subject here lol.. for me the 68 sounded better. Glassier and less mid range.. when distorted also less compression, like i feel the 65 is father away from a Deluxe, still great amp cant wait to know what it is to fix it.. I was in the Blues Jr age for a while and na.. just rather have a Monoprice for that fender Tone

But what a pleasant surprise. I own a 65 Princeton RRI. I never heard the 68 silver face. It sounds a bit fuller and beefier, brighter with a less scooped midrange than the 65. I like the brighter clean tones. I need more time with my 65. and continue listening to demos of the 68 to decide if I should make a switch. They both sound great in your video!!!

    This review was really helpful in comparing the two Princeton’s, so thank you. Today, I tried and bought a ‘65 Reissue. I have to say, your review pretty much persuaded me but trying the ‘65 was a revelation. I wasn’t expecting such clarity and liveliness and it was so easy to get the sound I was looking for. • @VintageRadius
      @VintageRadius 3 роки тому

      I have the 65 and I can tell you that both amps take pedals well, but they are just a bit different. The 65 is more mid-scooped and classic fender sparkle. Sounds fantastic clean and semi-clean. A tubescreamer (mid-pushed) works very well with the 65 for classic TS tones like SRV or Mayer. Something like a Klone or KOT type pedal would also work great. I think of the 68 as perhaps better if you prefer slightly higher gain tones, mildly overdriven to a bit more driven rock. Its partly the speaker and also amp EQ and how it breaks up (less harsh) when driven

  • @Jonathandavidk
    @Jonathandavidk 4 роки тому +10

    I have a 68 custom Princeton reverb and I realized the secret of how to set it. The issue with the amp is a resistor on the tone stack that makes this amp more like a bassman amp. Hear me out. The issue is not that the amp has more bass, it’s that there is a preset amount of low mids. Because of this, even if you turn the bass off, there’s always a very present low end.
    However, set the volume to 5, the treble to 8 and the bass to 5 and turn the volume on your guitar down to 3-4 and you will have the beautiful fender clean sound, very much like a standard Princeton. By raising the treble and bass, you effectively scoop the low mids that make this amp sound weird in a lot of demos. Even better, turn up the volume knob on your guitar and you have the best breakup in a small fender amp that I have heard.
    This took a while to get to. You cannot just leave your guitar volume on 10 and set the amp the same as you would another Princeton. This amp is it’s own thing. Explore it and you’ll be rewarded.

    Rich,
    I recently returned a '68 Custom Deluxe Reverb because of the low noise floor and high hiss levels. I just couldn't get past it. Does the '65 Princeton have an issue with idle hiss? I know that all tube amps by nature will have some noise, but the hiss on the '68 CDR was so bad that it would be absolutely useless in a recording situation.

    The '68 Custom is slightly lower wattage - 12 as opposed to the 15 the '65 is rated at - and between that and the low negative feedback, it's a touch-sensitive darling. It loves to take front-end compression (which raises its clean headroom, incidentally), and overdrives readily when pushed with a little boost. It doesn't sound classically "Fender-y" like the more faithful Blackface reissues -- it has some of the harmonic mojo of a Supro or a tweed Deluxe. It's not going to give you a ton of clean volume on stage. You have to run it through a PA to fill a building. But for recording applications, it's tremendous!

    • @LA-zc9rg
      @LA-zc9rg 2 роки тому

      I don’t think anyone would describe the 65 as “dark”. 65 is clean with that familiar Fender black face “sparkle”. The 68 isn’t “traditional” and a much darker amp geared to breakup sooner. I find the 68 kind wooly if not a tad muddy and the 65 a bit scooped in the mids and glassy overall.
      Both very nice amps it just depends on what you play and what you like to hear.

    I have the baja too and just purchased the Princeton Reverb 65. Unfortunately I just found out when i'm playing at home, when i mute the strings sounds great, when Im not playing, it sounds a weird sound. Like static but very very loud. After several opinions, technocians told me is the normal sound but is just annoying. I was reading it might be because the guitar needs to be landed. I have the baja since a year and a half and never notice anything similar until sunday with my new Princeton. I just tried through a Vox AC15C1 and same thing. Weird thing is maybe I just noticed that. No issues with the amp at all. In a nutshell tone is awsome but when i stop playing is not good and i'm playing on volumen 4. What do u think? Definitely sounds like your guitar needs to be grounded. It is possible that maybe the ground wire broke loose recently, which may be why you haven't noticed it before. Also, maybe you are turning the PRRI and/or Vox up louder than with previous whatever-amp-you-might-be-using, which would also increase the noise floor and perceived 60-cycle hum. First steps: try grounding your guitar, then try shielding the guitar. If that works, perfect. If not, then a noise gate or compressor at mild/low settings may help reduce noise (but a compressor with high compression will actually increase the noise floor).

    These amps sound so good it's ridiculous. Get both for stereo! In any case, I have the 65. The 68 sounds just as good. I went for the 65 even though it was about $100 more, but it is assembled in the USA. I also have the 64 hand-wired deluxe reverb reissue - an amp I absolutely love. I tried some of the boutique amps, including Tone King, Magnatone and Morgan. No thanks, although I think the Morgan PR12 is a damn good sounding amp as well.

    • @RPSartre01
      @RPSartre01 4 роки тому +3

      @@kkapoun I don't think comparing the 65 Princeton to the 64 hand-wired deluxe reverb is a fair comparison. The 64 contains a 12" speaker and is 22 watts. It is very dynamic and really has that vintage fender tone. First time I played it I heard 50s, 60s, and 70s music all come through it. It's just a superb amp - surf, motown, funk, chuck berry and buddy holly, clean-tone hendrix, and classic rock, etc. It's obviously not a metal amp. I actually drove 5 hours to a music store that had it in stock, and they had Morgan, Friedman, Magnatone, and Tone King (Imperial MKII and the Big Sky). I almost fell for that boutique marketing but I really wanted a hand-wired amp. The Fender 64 is had that extra sparkle and chime that all other amps lack. I had a hard time deciding between the Tone King Big Sky and the Fender 64, but ultimately it was that extra sparkle and chime that pushed me toward the Fender 64. Big Sky is also heavy and dark sounding - maybe good for blues at least. The 65 Princeton is a nice amp, and I like to play it - unlike my blues deluxe. If that's in your budget, then get it and don't look back. I've tried so many amps, and recently tried a Swart - I prefer my 65 Princeton. But if you have an extra $1,000, then go for the 64 hand-wired. You will have an amp that will be with you for the rest of your life. If I didn't think it was that good I would tell you because I am so sick of guitarists on youtube promoting equipment that basically suck.

      Robert Pajkovski thanks so much for the reply! I’m tempted to give the 64 a shot! Final question, does it take pedals well? I assume it’s versatile but if it’s differentiation is in the clean sound only that might change my mind. Thanks again!
