    Guitar Paradiso Drinking Game
    -Rules -
Divide the following cards amongst your friends (or do it alone - I'm not judging). You must knock back a beverage of your choosing when one of your cards comes up in the course of a Guitar Paradiso episode.
    - Danish Pete - ‘There’s nothing wrong with that!’
    - Danish Pete turns up with more broken bones
    - Mick not wearing Hawaiian shirt
    - Danish Pete shouting out the last word Mick has just said
    - Mick looking awkward because of accidental double-entendre
    - Danish Pete wearing Crocs
    - Open G chord!
    - Mick rescuing Danish Pete from a sentence he can’t… ‘Finish.’
    - Slagging off Donald Trump
    - Mick looking incredulous when Pete corrects him on some technical detail
    - Kick ass jam
    - "Anyway..." [omit this card unless you've got two livers and/or you're not working for the next week]

This is becoming my new dream amp, Princeton Reverb with a 12" Celestion AlNiCo Blue. I have never been one much for Fender amps past the tweed era, but seeing a local band where one of the guitarists was playing a 65 PRRI made me reconsider the blackface era. I'm currently playing a Rickenbacker 330 into a Mesa F-50 with 12AU7s, KT66HPs, and a Vintage 30.

I just purchased a limited edition Princeton this one has an alnico jensen though, and it sound great. I got a great blues lead type of sound with a Hudson Electronics "Gospel Bomb" germanium treble boost. I really am pleased with this amp, I wanted an amp with that classic fender clean sound in my arsenal and I did not want a ridiculously heavy twin reverb.

Late to the party here. One thing to know about the Princeton & its Reverb sibling is that they were voiced with a hefty bass output to overcome the feeble-sounding speakers they originally came with. With the original Oxford in my Princeton, a '68 with the blackface circuit, I used to set the bass to 5 or 6 to get some decent low end. Since replacing that speaker with a Weber version of the old Jensen C10Q, I get the same bass response with the knob set just above 3. This has the added plus of increasing headroom since the amp isn't working so hard to deliver low end. Both Fenders in this video should sound better with the bass backed off a bit, like down to 3.5 or even lower.

Jensen speaker FTW IMHO The beauty of these small amps is they're quiet and you can get a bit of edge without being too loud. Ok I have to edit this a bit what Fender really needs to do is make a 2x12/2x10 version of this amp with mixed speakers because both of them together is bliss. :)

I happen to own two Princetons. One is a 65 edition with a 12“ celestion and a blue light. One is a 67 limited edition with a 10“ Jensen and red light. They are quite distinct. The 65 (blue light) has a more direct punchy feel and a thicker meatier tone with a sweet bottom end. It is an overall darker amp. I would not recommended it though if you are after chime and sparkle. The edition with the red light is airier as if you have lifted a veil from the blue one. But it is more neutral in feel, not as punchy and direct as the blue one.
I also tested the blue one against the Deluxe re-edition. The Deluxe has a different tone stack on each channel one more baseman and one more original Deluxe.
i stayed with the Princeton because how big and punchy it feels and because of the full bottom end. I might not be your typical Fender guy though. I use the amp also for a sweet Jazz tone with an ES330. I think you need to play them to really grasp the difference. Hope that helps.

I'm going to have too listen to this one a, couple off times! I just happen to be trying to decide about these two amps. At one point i think it was Mick who said the standard was sweeter at low volumes, but you say the blue is more efficient? I mostly play in the mornings before work and before the neighbors get up and prefer that clean sound Gregor Hilden has on his UA-cam videos( a 1963 or 64 Vibroverb). Now will come the most difficult part, finding a store that has both to listen to! Thanks for the Very timely video.

If you want a great sounding 10" speaker, which is louder and has more bass than the Jensen C10R, try a Weber 10F150, which is similar in power and voice coil size to the famous old C10N speakers. I switched from a vintage USA Jensen P10R, which came with my 1959 Gibson GA-18, to the 10F150, and it made a HUGE difference in volume and bass. They take awhile to break-in,. but so worth it...!

I wonder what it would sound like on a Jensen P12Q or P12N. There is a big difference between a 12" and a 10" and a ceramics vs alnico speaker. As for the difference between Celestion and Jensen, that is a matter of personal preference in the end, the Celestion always reminds me of an amp with a British voicing, thus I tend to prefer the Jensen/Weber/Eminence (Patriot series) in a Fender. Another nice alternative for this amp might be an Eminence Legend 1028K, which is a really nice sounding 10" speaker.

The only one I've held onto is the Marshal bc I love the option of that heft. But I don't gig anymore and want something warm but bassy and resonant to play at home. The Princeton is intriguing me.

Again, Andertons is off by a decade: the 1950's are when amp power climbed whilst getting progressively cleaner, culminating in the 50W Fender Bassman. It was the 1960's when things cleaned up substantially and amp power REALLY climbed, culminating in the Marshall Major (and, later, the HiWatt DR201).

Great review. Preferred the Jensen. It has "that" sound off the records. Blue is great though but different. Its a good colour association for the sound. Not worried about the "farting" so its called. Just turn down the bass. Its a 10" speaker so cut your cloth accordingly and don't expect it to compete with a 12".

Is the speaker the only difference between the two amps? or do they also differ in circuitry...?

I own a Fender Princeton Reverb Reissue with the 10” Jensen and it chimes wonderful at low volumes but as soon as you turn it up it falls apart farting
I now have an older Eminence Alnico Red Fang 10” and it is 102.3 sensitivity and it chimes like a bell at all volumes and the headroom is huge

I have the 12" Jensen and it sounds like butter, much better than 10

Genuinely appreciate all of Anderton's TV, but this vid DID NOT show off one of THE all time classic amps to anywhere near its capabilities. Sigh.

2 inches definitely makes a difference

One on the left hands down. The 10” ceramic is no match for alnico 12”. 12” has better bottom end, more sweet compression, and the mods are more clear. The other is flubby

I know this video is old, but can anyone help me out please? So I bought a 12-in limited edition Princeton Bordeaux and it doesn't have any break up from 1 to 10. I checked the tubes and they're all stock. I've taken it to guitar center to let them know but they all think it's fine. Do I have a dud?

I would buy a deluxe reverb. In the US it's only $100 more.
