We decided to restore one of the superbikes from the 70’s that Old Spanner had never owned, a Honda CB750 K. After some research we found that most of the Honda CB750 K series are very similar, and over half a million of them were produced over around 10 years. So we thought it shouldn’t be too hard to find one. Having discussed it we decided that I should look for a K0 preferably a Sandcast, but not essentially. The reason we decided upon the K0 model was so that when the day came to let it go, we would get the best price for it. As the number following the K gets bigger the value of the bikes gets lower, with the K7s and 8’s despite being technically the best models, also being the cheapest.
Unfortunately, this price differential is also reflected in the project bike prices, with a project K0 costing more than a pretty good condition K7. And if it is a Sandcast (basically the same bike but with the engine cases made using a simpler casting method) then add an additional £8k to the price.
Having looked for a while we spotted one listed by a company in the USA on eBay. I noticed their listings of a variety of interesting bikes on eBay offering free delivery to the UK for a couple of years. But I hadn’t been brave enough to buy one. This one was a K0 diecast that had been chopperised at some time in the past. A non-runner with high bars and a king and queen seat. There was also a box of some of the harder-to-find parts, air filters, badges etc. The bike was on bidding, but the starting price looked attractive, and as it stood the bike was unattractive enough to hopefully repel other bidders.
Well, we won the bidding on the bike, and after only 8 weeks it arrived in the UK from the States. I think we even got it at a very good price. This video is a compilation from our playlist of videos showing the things we did with it to get it into what I would say is a very nice state. Unfortunately, another project popped up that caught my eye, so I let it go before I had finalised the restoration. The main stumbling block was the 4-into-4 exhausts that the K series came with. Good repro versions cost nearly as much as the bike originally cost us, and most of the used ones that came up looked like scrap, but expensive scrap!
The chap who bought the bike was really pleased, he added it to his collection of all of the different K’s having put on a set of exhausts that he had been hoarding. He must have felt he got a good deal, as he contacts me every few months asking if I had found and restored any other bikes he may be interested in 🙂

i had a 74 gold, I had the 4 into one pipe, they sound fantastic, the paint and stripes look great.
The 4 into 1 Delkevic sounds great to me too. The pipe I have on my Cafe Racer that I am working on at the moment may be a little too loud though :)

Hi another cracking video. I have just finished doing a K1. Parts are so expensive. An exhaust now costs around £1850. A total rip off. The price doubled overnight. I don't think I will be doing another one due to the price of the parts. Happy new Year pal

Nice. Had a 69 Sandcast. What u did was a “refirb” not rebuild. I’m rebuilding a 75 F0. Everything new which pays you back with the new bike feel and performance.

I am really looking forward to painting my Cafe Racer project, I already have a good idea of the main colour I am going to use, but the details will make all of the difference. I derusted the tank in episode 13. I hope that gives you the answer to your questions. I am not a fan of liners, mostly because needing to remove them in previous tanks I've worked on.
Next time I do one I may look at using electrolysis.

Just under £6k, the new owner had original pipes and seat, I suspect that he added £4k to the value just by fitting them. I think that was before prices peaked, I suspect they are on the way down at the moment. He has been in touch a few times asking if I was doing any more, he has a bit of a collection. I really miss that bike, I really loved the colour, and it came out so well, but I am always looking for the next project.
