54k miles for a Goldwing is just broken in. Those boxer 4's will go hundreds of thousands of miles. They're really fantastic bikes. Would love to see a full restoration on that. It's a prefect candidate.

Joe - not only did your Pop (OGVintage) get you going in a multi-faced career, he’s also responsible for the immeasurable knowledge that this channel has spread, globally. there’s also a wealth of inspiration delivered, by showing folks that they can also revive machines in their own garages. that’s priceless & epic. to me, spreading knowledge and inspiration is the most noble act that we can do for those outside of our community. Good on you. Condolences.

First and foremost, my condolences for you and your family. You may want to check out the production numbers on the yellow bike. Should be a 1976 and that was the only year for that color up until 2018 or so. I have one very similar to it. I don't ride much anymore but I bought it about 25 years ago with less than 5000 miles. It has Samsonite luggage and a Windjammer fairing. When I retire it's one of the projects that I have collected over the years to restore to original condition. As many have suggested they are great reliable bikes. You will want to change the timing belts right away as these are interference engines. Also they will sometimes develop a leak at the water pump, which is usually an o-ring that is no longer listed as available for the GL1000. Good news was (is?) the kit for the GL500 would work. I look forward to seeing more on these bikes.

Hey Joe, your Grandpa is at peace now and no longer suffering. He'll live on in your memories..
About those series 1 Goldwings, they are super smooth and robust bikes that'll do BIG mileages if looked after. Very heavy, but the mass is close to the ground so once on the move very stable and smooth to ride. I like those early ones best. I think the weak spot is the water pump seals, so watch out for that. They're super complex bikes and I'm impressed with how you tore into it without any problems! Ace video , thanks for the entertainment!

Never had any serious accident, my 750 cost $2400 including registration. Here from Sdyney Australia Penshurst actually.

I had a 81 Goldwing 1100 I tore down like you just did. It was time consuming to say the least. At the end when it was back together it was total satisfaction. The hardest part, if I recall, was putting the timing belts back on so the timing was correct. The cams are quite difficult to get lined up due to a spring like action moving the gears. You'll see

So sorry to hear about your GrandPa, Joe. I only wish I could get my children motivated to give me some Grands, to spoil and get them into trouble with motorcycles, ATV's, and hot rods. I'm still holding out hope though. I'm so glad you are doing your Grandpa's bike! That is quite special. Just to motivate YOU, legend has it that THE fastest motorcycle time on the Tail of the Dragon, in spite of all the really good riders, on really fast bikes, is held by some old dude (about my age) on a naked Gold Wing. I've ridden it many many times, on an R6, but mostly on my Sportster (that is fast enough to surprise everybody, especially when they see it's ridden by somebody old as me.........but it isn't anywheres near stock). That Gold Wing you have I hope you bring back all the way to its full glory. Looking forward to the next installment.

Sorry to hear about your grandpa, I've lost my fair share of grandparents over the years and it's always no fun. As far as the goldwing goes, I had a 1982 GL1100 for awhile. They're infamous for the valve seals going out and smoking on start-up. Turns out, its just because of how the bike sits on its kick stand. Everything rushes to that side of the engine and wears it all down. While you're in there anyways, I'd go ahead and change those and your timing belts out, especially at that high mileage. You also may check out the 34 pict 3 mod. It swaps all the factory carbs for one old VW style carb and makes it all so much simpler. Sweet bikes man! That'd be a great his/hers combos for you and Jade! Love your videos and I've learned a ton from ya. Sorry again about your grandpa, goldwing guys are the best 😪

Sorry for your loss. It’s always hard to lose a loved one. Those gaskets are still available through Honda directly. Make sure to order the correct gaskets tho. I just looked up the parts on Partzilla and they offer two different gaskets. Not sure what could be different but definitely two options. Maybe the gl and gla used different touring packages and require a thicker gaskets etc not sure. Good luck with the build

My deepest condolences to you and your family upon your grandfather's passing. Know that he is looking down on you with a smile on his face, seeing the intelligent (except for being a Packer fan), hardworking man you've become. Love the channel, always a learning moment.

Condolences Joe. Even though you've worked on other bikes of his, I hope these (or at least one of them) find a permanent place in your garage.

Sorry for your loss! I believe that the reason the left side is more come cup is because the bike leans to the left and the carbs probably just drained into the cylinder. Just take your time and you'll get it running. I would either put bariums B12 in it or seafoam to help free up the Rings

Both those bikes are nice and complete by barn find Goldwing standards. Usually they're pretty hacked up, but your Grandpa obviously cared about them. Here's hoping you'll save them both. Good job getting it un-seized! I have a red '75 and there are a couple videos of it on my channel if you need motivation at any point. Highly recommend Randakk's Cycle Shakk for GL1000 parts, particularly carb rebuild kits. Also a factory service manual is indispensable. Looking forward to the next video!

Sorry for your loss mate. I will be interested in watching how you bring this machine back to life. I had to laugh out loud when you tried to push that bike up the ramp. 550 pounds and locked on calipers. I remember pushing one back in the 70's and it was not fun. Good luck with the restoration.

I’ll be praying for you and your family. So sorry to hear about your grandfather.
I love your videos. Since I’ve become disabled and can’t work on bikes and cars anymore. Watching you work on them brings back so many memories. Can’t wait to hear this one fire up.

Sorry for your loss. I'm going through it myself, I lost my mother July 5th. I'm sure your Grandpa was an amazing man, it's super cool that he was able to pass his passion for bikes on to you. It's always a treat to watch people bring the classic bikes back to life. :)
