I remember being so excited as a teenager that Tiff was going to be reviewing the F1 , I stayed home to watch it, told my parents I was reserving the TV specially for this and had the VHS recorder ready. I love the bit where Tiff says " and what you've all been waiting for me to do , is give it some stick ". The sound that followed was like nothing else. Little bit later got my brother to take me to London and visit the tiny showroom they had on Park Lane with a silver F1. No car since has got close to that excitement and want factor. Still the greatest.
I remember seeing the silver McLaren F1 in the Park Lane showroom for years in the early 2000’s, seeing it was the best part of the otherwise agonising weekly Sunday drive to see our Nan in North London.
Me too. There was only 4 tv channels back then, and top gear was the only motoring programme. Granted there were a very few attempts by itv/ C4 to start rival shows but they faded into obscurity very quickly. There wasn’t any ‘track days’ or car shows back then either, apart from the Birmingham and Earl’s Court shows.
Oh my god. I watched this a thousand times to feel the speed, the metallic sound of this fantastic V12 and the emotion of Tiff. I m french but I have to admit this is my best video s car ever. Not only because it is (still) the best car ever made but also because the way it was filmed is so immersive. What a motor, what a car. The way the car keeps going is fantastic 7:428:47 Thank you Tiff
Even though I've watched this a million times, the quality here is so great I need to watch again (and probably again). I had no idea such a version existed, thanks for the upload!
A lot of cars sound great from the outside, but that has to be the best interior sound of any car. It sounds so urgent and powerful without being as terrifying and deafening as a full-blown racing car.
This makes me so nostalgic, I recorded this on tape when it was broadcast and practically wore the tape out watching Tiff blast it around Goodwood. I'd just started driving so was obsessed with the F1 at that time (and still, 30 years later).
Thanks so much for uploading this. There was an older version where (and no disrespect to the uploader) it looked pretty bad and the audio was out of sync, so I got this on VHS tape and was planning to try to capture it and upload a better version, but never got around to it. You saved me a job 🙂
I know the exact video you mean. I downloaded of youtube in 2008. I actually have this on VHS somewhere. Had jeremy with the ferrari f50, the TVR cerbera, the mclaren, porsche boxter, lotus elise. But this racedayreplay guy literally reads my mind. Not only my favourite car and favourite review of it but also the grand prix day replays from the time i remember most, following jenson button avidly. 2004 onwards. Cant believe its 20 years ago
Timeless gem, whatever modern super hypercar you think about, none even gets close the F1 in terms of mechanical sensation, even just watching hearing a video……and what a timeless design….
Yea, they didnt want to have a car higher than the NSX. They messed up IMO. Honda was the best at making naturally aspirated engines in the 90s. They would've made this car even better. But BMW did a pretty good job, made this thing a torque monster.
@@DG-EditsYT Well, their engines dominated F1 in the early 90s, their road cars have proven more reliable than bmw and with better power for the same displacement.
Just watched this after a saw a snipped from it on TopGears videos of the new T50 by Gordon Murray. What a machine that F1 was! It was years ahead of its time! What a bargain back when it came out compared to what they cost today!
Brilliant piece of TV, Tiff is great and the McLaren F1, well what a fantastic car. Amazing sound! Not sure about the closing line though "Gordon Murray doesn't listen to the radio." Gordon Murray is actually just as into his music as he is cars.
Tiff is really is working hard to keep it pointing in the right direction on the track. Lots of body roll, seems to understeer into every corner and then flicking into power-oversteer. I know Murray disliked using Anti-Rollbars, but I can't help but wonder if a set would have helped here, as the GTR versions used.
As I recall Murray wanted it to ride better than a Rolls-Royce, hence not using anti-rollbars for the normal road version. They most definitely would have helped the on-track performance though. Still an amazing machine regardless!
Agreed. Back when I was really into BMWs, I really loved the F1. I bought the book on it's development ("Driving Ambition") more than 20 years ago. I found it (and still find it) a little puzzling why he would bother with fans for "suction" yet still allow the car to roll so much. Surely the roll in corners would negate any suction benefit? It's then little wonder that Tiff preferred the 911 GT1. Edit: Just so there is no misunderstanding, I still think the F1 is the "jewel" of 90's supercars and definitely better for the road.
What amazing and luxurious and unique supercar for sure. I love the part where he says I just took this thing 160 around the corner 😂 the look on this man's face you could tell he could barely stay planted in his seat he was truly exhilarated 😂🤣 I can imagine how sensational it was just being there behind that wheel like he said, you could feel the Wheels tear through every gear! I will say this I believe there must be a UK F1 Mclaren and perhaps an American version? I noticed he says there's no radio in this car but in the American market that comes with a CD player so for that reason there is a radio for America. Either way with an engine like that who needs music? 😂
He says there is a cd player. The gear lever is also on the right so I think only 1 model. No radio means no actual radio for traffic announcements. 👍🏼
It's from 1994 as I can tell from the end credits, but cannot remember if it was on a regular episode or a special. Maybe it was in the Supercars Videotape?
Originally it was in the last episode of Series 31 - S31E11. Top Gear’s Take 2 re-aired this sometime later. And this also appeared on the Supercars tape.
@Race Day Replay Hey, any chance you've got your original capture file for this tape? Would like to add it to our growing collection - part of what we call the Top Gear Community Project. Thanks. Very nice capture you have done!

When you want to get a proper sportscar reviewed, you need a proper racing driver. But racing drivers aren't journalists. That's why God gave us Tiff Needell.

Tiff is a proper driver, able to do commentary while pushing a car to the limits.
What a legend Tiff is.
Vastly underrated.

3 seater McLaren. And I like it more than the new ones. Awesome. Tiff skilled it.
Fun fact: Gordon originally went to Honda to build a custom engine for the Mclaren but they turned him down
Yes , 4.5L V12 gordon asked honda
And BMW made a better unit, slightly heavier but far more powerful as far as it was reported, I think he wanted 500bhp and they had well over 600bhp

I'm so pleased BBC used an actually decent racing driver like Tiff to review this masterpiece, rather than an oaf like Clarkson.
