Thank you for this. Living in Sweden back then in '99 we never got to see any of this on our broadcast of the race. Normally they started airing five minutes before the green flag and ended the brodcast five minutes after the chequered. I had to buy the F1 mag every month to know what went on behind the scenes. Wish I had ITV back then, it would have been great.

That Lee McKenzie interview with Jenson is prophetic, starting by asking “can they really be underdogs if the car was designed with honda backing last year” is interesting to hear and jenson mentions the problems with the tires in cold temperatures that would almost wreck his season later in the year. Seems pretty notable that he was actually a favourite to win a race at the beginning of the season and still had decent odds for the championship. Really doesn’t make it feel like as much of a long shot as it this story is sometimes told as.
