PSA: When I pulled up the Chaos Bolt server stats I looked at EU rather than NA. Regardless, the trend is pretty much the same, my opinion doesn't change, and I think this conversation is still worth uploading. Enjoy! (Also, why the hell did Blizzard use the same names for all the EU and NA servers?? lol)

I feel like the conclusion is actually different when you look at chaos bolt us.
Chaos bolt EU is a healthy server with 5000 on each side.
2000 on your faction is a less healthy server for sure. I played on deviate delight, which was a tiny server in vanilla classic, roughly 1500 alliance and 1000 horde. It was… rough.

Horde Guild Leader on Chaos Bolt - NA.
There really is nothing like the RP on Chaos Bolt. You could have walk up RP daily, people got really immersed and respected RP.
This decision Blizzard made kind of shot the server in the foot, and some people believe they really made an "out of touch" decision.
A lot of established guilds are planning on staying into Phase 3 and seeing how the server population is in a few weeks.

I also played at Chaos Bolt, and there's a significant contrast between 5k (Horde)/5k (Alliance) versus 2k (Horde)/2k (Alliance). It's quite inactive and challenging to find players, and keeping the server running there misleads people about what WoW truly is.

  • @ClockwerkOJ

They didnt just give free transfers... they locked the server. No one without a character on it can join... this shows the intent to kill it rather than allowing player choice.

I used to play on a smaller server in Classic Vanilla and this guy is right, the server community is way better on smaller servers, knowing every guild and every guild knowing you, being able to join a random pugs and there always being someone in there who can just vouch for you etc is so nice. Large servers feel more dead that small servers community wise.

  • @Stahl42
    @Stahl42 5 місяців тому +16

2 things... 1) They locked the player creation at this announcement; basically, saying that they were going to terminate the server. 2.) They did this right before P3 and only offered a transfer to Crusader Strike (a mega server and the PVE server Lava Lash came later) stating that faction locks were in place. This brought a fear of being split or trapped on a dead server if they suddenly locked Crusader Strike (there was no advanced warning the killing of Chaos Bolt either.)
It was a populated at 40 server in prime time. Borderline layering in some zones. Sure, it might have been low pop on the early leveling zones at the end of P3 when everyone was burnt out; however, damn.. they could have just offered transfers without locking or pay transfers over all. This was heavy handed, out of the blue, and tone death to players that enjoyed the non-mega server vibe.

Yeah the fact that the only option was to go to CS but CS still had the faction lock in place is honestly insane.

In any MMORPG, I much MUCH prefer a smaller realm, no layers, where you're playing in a single world and you see the people in your community over and over, and people make names for themselves (crafters, enchanters, RP'ers, PVP'ers, high tier raiders, etc.) The problem of course is population management, sadly.

I think that it's really lame that they would take down Chaos Bolt after many years of never shutting down any retail server despite server pops declining and introducing sharding to make pretend like server health was fine which ultimately destroyed the close knit communities with healthy populations Chaos Bolt represents.
Furthermore I find it funny they want to make it so people aren't forced to reroll but they never gave a shit about the health of the servers that became 100% horde or alliance.

Yeah this is some B.S. from Blizzard, closing down a smaller server just goes against the original philosophy of WOW Classic which was to bring back that sense of community. When the guy speaks about some players he is familiar with and that others on his server know about, you can tell it's part of his experience of playing WOW. They're just going to alienate half the players on this server and probably cause that amount of people to leave the game altogether. Small server experience is different from Mega server experience and they're not for everyone

I had been a chaos bolter playing for almost the entirety of the game, save for a 1-2 week burnout during mid/end stages of phase 1. (currently have 6 40s). For most of phase 1, pop/pug scene felt fine or good even, but with difficulty of gnomer, and the casual atmosphere of the server, p2 population felt like it dipped faster than bfd raiding population in p1. Before p3 was announced, finding a pug gnomer was nearly impossible outside of prime time (5-9/10pm us time), and if you found one, it had high chances of being scuffed (failing on 4th, 5th, or last boss). One of my 6 characters I have a static guild group, and that run was always smooth, and easy to replace any no shows, but my other characters had mixed results in pug scene.
Personally, I had wanted to be on CS, but didnt want to deal with the 4h+ q's on launch so chose Chaos Bolt, but in the end stages of p1 before p2 news/announcement, and the same period in p2, before p3 announcement, the server was pretty dead, and I'm glad they giving free transfers to CS. I just hope we don't get stuck with large q times again on p3 launch.

To me, paid xfers would not have been an option I would take, even for $10/character, I would rather just reroll than spend money to transfer from a dead server, but more likely than that I would have just stopped playing as opposed to the paid xfer. But yea you covered it well, the community was good for a while, but as phases dragged on it was significantly declining. Trying to level alts in SM midphase and I would regularly see not a single person in the lobby of SM, and /who had sometimes only 5-10 players inside, and i would just logout there and try again another time to get a group.

Inflation hit the economy on Crusader Strike far, far worse then it did on Wild Growth.
Blizzard should've offered FREE transfers to any SoD server they chose. they shouldnt just be automatically thrown on a megaserver.

My guild on CB is waiting and have fingers crossed we can choose where to go. All of us agree we don't want a mega-pvp server like CS. We want a nice med-pop server that has a community where we know each other and it means something. We knew other individuals in other guilds and we acted as guildmates even though we weren't. I don't think we were mad they made transfers available, but we are mad they locked that realm. That is what caused the mass exodus, It's basically as good as dead now. Most of us who remain, will level in peace and in a couple weeks have to xfer. Like I said, we hope other options open, but here we are.
I personally think people are impatient, all through phase 1 and beginning of phase 2 we only had some minor issues with finding a healer at times, but that's mainly because of other reasons not low player count. I think finding/pugging healers in general has been a struggle foe some after scanning forum posts etc...
    Just my thoughts.

  • @trisnics
    @trisnics 5 місяців тому +1

Thanks for the respectful take on this whole thing.
It would be nice to see the same level of respect from Blizzard. I felt that the post Tom wrote to the frustrated CB players only showed care to the people who just want fast groups. It didn't really show a lot of understanding or empathy to those who like smaller, more tight-knit, *RP* servers. Some sort of real apology or more understanding to the players this post was directed at would have gone a long way. Overall I just found Toms post to be unprofessional and poorly worded.
I'm not even playing SoD but a friend pointed this whole thing out to me. I really like the atmosphere of servers of the size that CB was. I'm just not into mega servers. Seeing that Blizzard is shifting to wanting to make mega servers the focus of Classic has been a big turn off and therefore I decided not to play SoD because I didn't want to see something like this happen and it turns out my concerns were on point. I have several friends who feel the same and quit when our previous smaller server died and the choice was to go to a mega server that my friends and I found pretty unwelcoming and too large. We're pretty much all done with Classic unless this mega server focus changes although 2019 Classic was a fun run for a while.
I also agree that people need to take responsibility for themselves and thank you for making that point. It's fine if a person likes mega servers or they prioritize getting fast groups, but yes, that person should just reroll if a server doesn't fit. Also when my kids were really young I didn't play MMOs, because I didn't ever want or expect those MMOs to change to fit my life. Now that my kids are older and more independent MMOs are fine to play again. In other words, I would never be livid in the way Toms post described because I'm responsible enough to where I wouldn't have put myself in that position to begin with.

I don't think it's its entirely fair to say that people that chose to roll there should be 100% accountable for their decision, given that so many couldn't roll on Crusader Strike at all due to it either being full or the 10k+ queue lengths in the beginning. Chaos Bolt didn't even exist immediately at launch and was only made to alleviate the CS overflow. That aside, finding groups outside of 4-9pm server-time was more often than not, an hour long process to get into something like RFD. I know this is against the grain here but all you need to do is open up the LFG tool on Chaos Bolt compared to the other servers. It was tough getting groups together most of the time. Also, just go sit in the cities and see how many buffs are going out. I ended up making a new character on the pve server and it was crazy how many boons were going out in the short amount of time I was in the cities. Chaos bolt would have people sitting in city for a while waiting to get the buff.

The problem with a cheap and not free server transfer is that plenty of players (especially on SoD) might have 8 characters that they play on with a variety of classes, professions etc. and if you have to pay per character then the cost can add up very quickly. If the cost was to migrate all characters currently on one realm over to another then I think that'd be fine, but that's not how the system works. I am curious how many people there are who want to migrate away from megaservers to have more familiar communities. My guild took advantage of this situation by leaving CS for Lava Lash since they've been offering free transfers there.

Then opening transfers to LavaLash or what ever is how they really feel. It's a smaller server. But Chaos Bolt didn't have Any GDKP's, we have super minimal Bots, and it was very awesome. But P2 Was So SHITTY, you had just Gnomer and Bloodmoon. But that was it. they should have waited for p3 to drop. Chaos Bolt was sweet.
The server guy also said in other tweets on "We see a couple Mega Servers on Wrath and we want that." then "thousands took the transfers with out a thought." the OG post read as "Move Or you WIL BE MOVED." So I would want to move to the PVP server instead of RP/PVP that's where one of my homies are.
But Also IF Pro has CB's health as better than CS in terms of people logging "Not everyone logs, and some have double toons or 3." but the CS health had a bigger drop, and CB looked more stable.

Smaller populations are more social, because every single one matters more - you can actually have a sense of belonging, be it on a server-wide scale or in a guild. Might not be good for a pvp realm, not too familiar with those. Probably more suitable for players who have lots of time to play. Also, where the fuck are TBC ERA servers? How about that realm manager pro gets those up and running, might appease some people!

I wasn't a big fan of the choice. My guild started on Crusader and left for Chaos because of the streamer take over and how toxic many of the streamer fan boys get. I feel like phase 3 was going to pop off and bring a lot of people back, but apparently blizzard didn't want to take the chance. Also the speed at which people took the transfer isn't a valid argument. My guild in particular took it because we didn't want to get stuck with a now forced dead server, nor coming into p3 late on a new server. We and probably like many others felt it made sense that if CB was going to die we better get everyone transferred quick and early as to not have issues come next phase in getting everything off the starting line.
The only caveat I have is that it certainly was a pain in the ass come one month in to find groups for dungeons when leveling alts on Chaos Bolt. This isn't going to ruin my experience, but I feel like this was a premature decision by sod blizzard.

I personally played chaos bolt as soon as i saw there was a massive queue on crusader strike first week as did my guild migrate over. Personally I don't really agree that everyone who chose the server decided that they wanted to play the "small server" it was just picking another cool name when they didnt want the server with queues most of the time and the average player won't know what the population of server is like until they've already dedicated an amount of time that they will not want to just throw away.
I'll say the general instant queue without worrying about servers in games has definitely shifted the average players appetite for looking for groups in games. I know i definitely got tired of looking for groups because whenever throughout any phase wanted to do some out of the way dungeon to try and get some quests done for small upgrades it felt impossible to do unless i was able to log on right at peak time, but even then peak time is when everyone hops on for raid not for dungeons. I'm not a very social player so I honestly dont know too many random players so a portion of the small server appeal is lost on me. The seeing random people I chatted to once in a while does not make up for the hours of time I lose looking for groups that dont pan out then leave me to just log off without playing at all.
I think for anyone who isn't able to really play at peak times like I do on the server will likely enjoy transferring over, but a lack of people at non-peak times just leads to more people congregating to only playing at peak times leading to a cycle of the server being packed for 2-3 hours then dead the rest of the time. Those that do only play at peak times and see a relatively healthy population though will understandably be furious at losing that community.

I have 5 characters on Lone Wolf (horde) and I created an alliance on Chaos Bolt in p1, dinged 25 and noticed the server was 4 times less populated. When you search for a group of BFD there were like 3-4 groups, and most of the people were first timer or ppl who don't talk English at all. Basically a depressing realm of people with "this is just a game" mindset. I stopped playing with my alliance character there after a day when I decided to form my own BFD group. I was spamming in all channels that the run is 2x SR and that WB was preferable. I filled the group 1 and a half hour later with people who asked me "what is SR?" and "what is WB? where to get it from?". I felt like the server was trolling me.

Look, I play on CB. The pop for raiding was okay at best. You HAVE to be in a guild. As for leveling dungeons... it requires a guild. WHICH IS FINE!! just making an observation. Now as for the economy.. it sucked... like 10k-12k items on the AH most of the time useless shit no one needs, good luck leveling profs thru the AH. CB was dying on the horde side at least, alli was higher pop and probably had an easier time overall. I wanted to roll CS but all my buddies rolled CB and now only 1 of them still plays lol.. so I am all for CB dying and moving to CS.

I feel like a lot of the "closely knit" community argument doesnt hold up very well because unless that player is doing something thats well known, you wont normally remember or recognize enough people on a server to warrant that feeling. I rather play an MMO wheres there's so many people playing and places feel packed and you have more groups to do content than a small server where its harder to find groups to do specific content.

For MMOs its imperative that the game has as big of a population as it can so that the game world feels alive as well as filling up queues to do content. And because this is classic WoW were talking about where you HAVE to socially interact to form a group the people you interact still matters.

I have a lot of memories of people and guilds and stories from my Vanilla server 20 years ago. In fact, I've talked to some of these people since and they remember me too. This was a great experience and worth spending my real life time with.
I have a lot of memories of people and guilds and stories from my Classic server 5 years ago, things that I will remember in 15 years too. This was a great experience and worth spending my real life time with. I still talk to a lot of the people I met through this server.
Both of these servers had less than a 5k pop.
These experiences with others are why I play MMOs. Personally.
While some people care more about their own characters and getting fast groups, I find this to be a really shallow and bland reason to play an MMORPG, and if it just comes down to being all about that then real life has far more fun things to focus on.
So while it's ok that that's why you play, it's not why everyone does.
The devs support your viewpoint though. So that's a win for you there.
