Hello, I love using the Canon EF 50mm f/1.2L for both weddings & senior portraits. It is an amazing lens! I use it at either f/2.2 or higher to keep my subject properly in focus. You are right though, an aperture of f/1.2 would be too shallow; however, having a low light lens such as this one does improve image quality (helps to reduce grain & noise) especially during wedding receptions and at night. The 1.2 is far too expensive and way too soft at 1.2. A better bet is the 1.4 but use it at 1.8 for increased sharpness.
