I'm glad they're focusing on anxiety instead of romance. Young children experience this too and likely don't have the words to describe it or express it. I hope this will facilitate conversations at young ages too.
As a romance repulsed aroace, I see this as an absolute win
Likely anixty is everywhere every one has anixty just other people handle it differently like watch south park or something that is one of Kyle's best speeches to cartman everyone has anixty so stop using it as a exccuss I have anixty to everyone does
I also like the conclusion with anxiety wasn’t “anxiety is always bad, you shouldn’t have that”, rather “every emotion has importance and reason-anxiety worries about future, unseen things-but all within moderation, because if one emotion is too much, then it hurts the individual as a whole”, and not only that, the message of “you can’t shape the individual into what you want them to be; you just let them be who they are” (whether that’s good things or hurtful things) it all makes you an overall complex person that understands themself to have many different character facets.
Inside Out feels like it has the creativity, heart and legs to be the second coming of the Toy Story franchise. Growing up with Riley and her support team just like we did with Andy and his crew.
The thumbnail scared me, thank god it’s actually a good movie
Same
Judge for yourself most early reviews always says it's good but one thing for sure it's another depressing Pixar movie
@@patricksowders7989 the good or the bad "depressing"?
Haha same. That’s how Dan creates the intrigue for his review, makes sure that we click on the vid. That’s his good business instincts showing.
@Doran. I dont know...i wouldnt clicked on his review regardless. But im glad my impression was wrong as i have a young kid and I'm going to be forced to see this movie
I love how it portraits anxiety as a natural part of life, very normal emotion we all have, something you can use and manage, not an excuse for everything. Lovely lesson!
I thought the film was saying that we aren't our emotions, and while they are things we experience, we are our own person. That's why Joy throws out the version of Riley she created and lets Riley figure out her own beliefs system. Which I think what the film is going for with the theme of anxiety - we get to decide who we are separate of what we're feeling no matter how overwhelming those feelings can be.
Agreed- that is also my main takeaway of the movie, and I think in the end when Sadness says to Joy that Riley is choosing her, the message is also supposed to be that we can choose to let one emotion take over despite the others being present, so that it is possible, for the moment, to choose Joy over anxiety or sadness etc.
@@JG4689 its more be yourself also anixty and joy are the highlights of this movie at times i love the fact she even refreced gmod and smash bros and her fan horror creation insanity with the I'm delsion i am thing honestly this movie was great
Aging up w the audience is something I really have always connected to Toy Story. I was nearly the same age as Andy every time a new movie came out and I always felt like it was perfect for the place I was at.
I hope this is the same for so many kids.
I feel like this is where they went wrong with Incredibles 2. What a great chance to age up everyone so that everyone of all ages could enjoy their matching age character age up.
Given how much I adored the previous film, I hope the nine years Pixar spent making this film were spent creating a worthy script. Thanks for the review!
Inside Out is my favorite Pixar movie too. I'm sooo relieved to see initial reviews are positive. Going to see it this weekend for sure
39 year old man and the original made me cry. There I said it. Great film. Up there with Toy Story
Literally ditto to all of this
I was only 10 when part one came out. Inside out is up there with my favorite Pixar classics. A great film with a great and poignant story.
I'm so excited to see this in 3D. I rewatched Inside Out last night on my 3DTV and was actually moved to tears, there are so few movies that use the stereo format but with Inside Out it almost made me feel like I was enveloped by the film.
while Ennui is represented by an unimpressed French woman. The newbies are all a hoot. Anxiety is conceived as a high-strung. We find that Riley’s inner imaginative landscape actually features a huge “Mount Crushmore” with four indistinct faces
I agree with everything you said.
"Inside Out" is my favorite Pixar movie too.
Leaving the theatre, I heard someone tell their kid "there's a lot to discuss in the car."
I just watched it yesterday. Absolutely loved it.
*SPOILER*
A parallel I adored between this movie and the first one is that at the end of the first one, Joy tells Sadness, “Riley needs you” and the end of the sequel Sadness tells Joy, “Riley WANTS you.” I thought it was fantastic seeing how the emotions have grown and developed.
You perfectly described how I was feeling before this movie came out, I’m now more tentatively hyped, will see if that holds when I see it this weekend!
Went to see it with my kids today and, yeah, i think this is another Pixar classic.
Because the concept is familiar it doesnt feel quite as clever as the first and theres no bing bong moment that broke me, but it builds on the concept well and really illustrates how damaging unchecked anxiety can be.
if dan murrell says the movie is good then it is good. ticket secured.
Dan's the man.
thank you for the review, I was skeptical, but now I am hyped to return to deal with all these emotions... And right after, Imma see Inside Out 2
My kids JUST got into Inside Out 1 so I’m very happy to hear good buzz about 2 🎉🎉
This movie touched my heart. Your emotions specifically anxiety combined with Envy/embarrassment can change your beliefs to "i'm not good enough." then you start being dominated by anxiety, you change who you are to compensate for that central lack of belief in yourself. I cried during this movie. I love how she just needed to feel all these emotions while focusing on the joy and positivity of her life. Loved it.
Pixar continues to make good movies, but we had gotten used to them making excellent movies that seeing a lower level made it seem like it was the end of Pixar, but it seems that many fans got ahead of themselves with that conclusion
The problem came when Pixar was given a mandate to pump out a certain amount of movies every year. For a long time, there was no mandate, so they could take their time. And I'm not just talking about the Chapek era either.
Yeah this narrative has been dead since coco and soul came out. They're both excellent.
@@Weaponator18Exactly.
@@Weaponator18encanto & Luca & onward were pretty good too they haven’t released much films rn 😭 ever since lightyear came out people just hating even tho elemental almost made billion
@@Zhou65encanto was just Disney
You've convinced me to watch this, Dan. I am not a huge Pixar/Disney fan but, as a person with GA, I appreciate the addition of new emotions. Great review as always!
What does "GA" mean?
@@DarthScott generalized anxiety
@@ieatgremlins thank you.
I've seen it twice now. I have anxiety disorder, have dealt with it for years. I found it so smart and moving how the story works on multiple levels, the weird characters in Riley's head with their own motivations representing emotions that pull Riley's strings, then how that relates to Riley's free will and actions IRL, how the sense of self and emotional intelligence feeds into Riley's decisions, and how it all relates to a metaphor for the emotion characters as parents/family to Riley. I think I loved the movie even more the second time I watched it.
@@DarthScott you’re welcome ☺️
Great to hear! I took my kids when they were younger and now that they're teenagers, they should relate to this one even more!
I didn’t love inside out 1 as much as everyone else has. But hopefully I enjoy this one. My favorite Pixar film as of late has been Soul, and might be in my favorites of all time just for the message
So relieved to hear this!!! I have my tickets for tonight already but was getting nervous with that late review and Margot.
But I have specifically trusted Dan’s Pixar taste 100% ever since the ScreenJunkies Pixar bracket a number of years ago, where our taste aligned basically exactly 😁
Inside Out is also my favorite Pixar film, so hearing that the sequel is the “best Pixar film since Coco“ is a perfect way for my expectations to now be high, but not unrealistically high
I am looking forward to seeing it this weekend. I hope they talk about the fact that Anxiety is a Mental Health Disorder, and not just a new emotion equal to the others. It requires intervention of some kind, whether that means psychiatrist, psychologist, therapist, or counselor. As parents, we need to take our kid's mental health seriously and not just default to, "oh, it's just a phase" or "it's just puberty" and then do nothing about it!
You forgot to mention that Ennui is voiced by Adèle Exarchopoulos
SO excited to see this in the theater. Pixar, we love you!
Really hoping we get at least one "Triple Dent Gum" bit
It's Pixar's version of a Rick Roll.
Guess what
@@Yona-pn6sq saw the movie today. Let out a laughing cheer
I love the first one, happy to hear the sequel is also good
Totally agreed with your review! I just saw this today in a theatre. I don't think this has to be seen in a cinema as opposed to waiting to stream it, but I agree with you, I admire the "bigger ambitions" this movie is trying to address with the "human process" of puberty.
I am glad that this sequel gave us new insights on the established characters, exciting new characters and fresh new "landscapes" that inhabits Riley's mind!
I was really nervous about them doing a sequel. Im hlad its good. My two teenagers are really excited to see it and it sounds like it will be perfect for what its tackling.
Thank you for this thoughtful review. What a relief to consider a movie and find it to be creative and worthwhile.
Can’t wait for inside out 10, about leaving work and settling down in retirement. But no really, i’m glad it’s great movie because Pixar really needed another really great not just kinda good film that also isn’t shat onto disney+
As a HUGE movie lover/ fanatic and aspiring actress I’m so happy the box office is coming back to life slowly but surely with movies like Bad Boys 4 Ride or Die and Inside Out 2. ❤❤❤❤
I have my IMAX ticket for Sunday afternoon!
Was it worth seeing in IMAX? Or was it a bit too much?
I always love these hotel whisper reviews! haha
Woww wow wow..this movie is for teens and also actually for people going through adulting where we feel scary of losing of ourselves & feeling lost..love the director, such a fun and intelligent way of storytelling..cried at climax..so much connected
Love this movie 5/5 ♥️♥️💥
Yes! It’s up there with Coco! It was a good movie. My kids loved it.
I honestly thought it was even better than the first one (which was also great). It's in my Pixar Mount Rushmore now.
Very excited for this now! I was also hugely skeptical of the marketing early on, but I’m glad to see Pixar still has some magic left to share
I really enjoyed the first one, looking forward for this one !!!🎉
This is a top tier Pixar film up there with the likes of Toy Story, The Incredibles, Finding Nemo
Dan, you talk quieter when you are in a hotel, let it flow!
I'm trying to be courteous of my neighbors.
Beautiful film!
Inside Out 2 feels so much smaller. The "Sarcasm" and "Brainstorm" are great world building, but they don't work too well as roadblocks because they aren't really a result of Riley's conflicting emotions. They're just a result of Riley growing up/literally thinking! (In the first movie, the roadblocks were Riley as a person breaking apart). Good movie- that I wish didn’t try to copy the same formula of the first movie and would have expressed its strong themes in a better way. Great humor, themes, and world building, but bad plot.
I absolutely loved this movie. I found it interesting that most of the people in my theater were parents who wanted to see the movie, dragging their kids to see it. Most of the kids didn't know who joy was, and honestly, seemed to get bored and restless toward the middle of the movie. I'm happy it was a more mature story though and I don't see anything wrong with Pixar making a movie for older audiences.
7:13 You said it perfectly, "This is the first time I felt that "old Pixar magic" in a long time.". Seriously, TOO LONG.
I was also super relieved that I enjoyed the movie as much as I did. This felt like it built off the original clever and insightful ways.
I loved this film. It’s my favorite one since coco as well. It was fun watching my 12 year old watch it. She was having anxiety over the choices anxiety was making.
I just came back from seeing it (loved it )
Wednesday night. No special pricing. It's been out for a week. Original English Version (*not* the local language) and YET it was a packed theater.
I went to premieres this year that weren't this packed.
Hearing you call it Pixar's best movie since Coco makes me want to cry tears of joy (haha) tbh; Coco is my third favorite pixar movie and Inside Out is my second (Ratatouille first), I love Inside Out SO much and I was sooooo terrified the sequel wouldn't hold up, considering Pixar's recent track record......... The last one I truly loved was Coco indeed, so to hear this compared to that in terms of quality makes me let out a huge sigh of relief 😭🙏 I'm so excited to see it...!
Thanks, Dan, can't wait to see it with my 8yo
Glad to see a big winner from Pixar. Fingers crossed the box office rewards a good movie
Thank god it’s good! It will come out in early August here and I’m already seated😂
Yay really excited to go now! It's already June and by my count this is only the third See It Now! of the year so far (4th if you count beekeeper lol) so must be pretty dang good!
I am in the minority. It was a good movie, but uninspiring. To me, it was exactly the same adventure as the first, but with more characters involved. Joy learned the same message as she did in the first film. Seen the first one, then you've seen this one.
The issue (for me) with not seeing movies in theater is that refusing to pay a premium for so many stinkers and downers over time has removed my former habit of regularly seeing films as part of my life. Rather than anticipating them, sometimes I simply forget to see a movie (and short theater runs don't help). And the truth is, I don't feel like that loss has impacted my life. So theater going has become more of a shrug.
I grew up not knowing the word anxiety.. we don't need this emotion being known this emotion that soon
I liked the movie a lot, but I recommend rewatching Soul. It has that combination of everything you say you love about classic Pixar movies. It’s a damn shame it didn’t get a proper theatrical release.
my daughter is almost 12. inside out was a movie she liked a lot. she is also a very very anxious kid. i'm really curious about how she will see her own anxiety aftger seeing the movie.
Thanks for the review! I worry, too, that it will spoil the first one, which I love very much... I disliked Incredibles 2 so much that it DID kind of ruin the first one for me, and is a sequel I pretend never existed. But if you say I'm safe with seeing Inside Out 2 I'll trust you.
I really think the Incredible 2 should have set in 10 years after 1. The characters grew up, just like us.
Saw it in 3d last weekend. liked it, but did not love it the way I hoped. The second going is really well done. But the story is even a bit shallower than before. The newly introduced characters, though entertaining, lack the gravitas of the first ones. They pretty much copy pasted the workings of the old to the new iteration. And nobody will discover anything new about the inner workings of puberty. But still I would recommend going there with your kids. Perhaps sparking up an interesting conversation.
My number one most favorite pixar movie is inside out and my second favorite is elemental ❤❤❤❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉🎉😊 and i was 7 years old when the first movie came out and now I am 16❤❤❤
Elemental, really?
@@M_k-zi3tn yes
I cannot wait to take my kids to this movie... they are right before the teen threshold, so perfect timing!
I saw it today and loved it.
Interesting I wasn’t a fan of the first one so I’m curious to see how the second is
Yeah what always caught me off guard was the angles the 'emotions' view Riley. I only saw the first film but that little detail bothered me.
The emotions should always be in Riley's head and I'll think it's okay for them to get a window view from her eye prospective but when Joy is watching a memory and it's in 3rd person... That drove me nuts.
Felt like I was watching the Truman show at times.. somehow she was being recorded at all times. Maybe it's just my pet peeve. I also didn't cry at Bing Bong's dissolving because a kid her age should forget their imaginary friend, it's healthy but my spouse thought I was a monster for not crying over his loss lol
I’m so glad this turned out to be a solid movie! I’ll be checking it out
Animated sequels can often be rushed for cash, a shell of itself, or just not overall well thought out. But Inside Out 2 gave a genuine effort and it showed. The novelty a little worn off, but story was still good and the climax was excellent! I’d love to say what about it I loved but it kinda spoils it 😅
The local chain around my area had so many sales this weekend their whole system crashed!
The theatre was packed with families to watch this movie, not sure if I saw more attendance for this movie or #Barbenheimer 💖
I loved the movie and I hope crowded movie theatres are good for the box office.
Thanks for the review Dan. Unbelievable step down to go from bill hader to Tony hale damn lol
I mean, there's nothing wrong with Tony Hale. If you were going ot have someone give the same kind of nervous energy to Fear that Hader did, Hale isn't a BAD choice at all. There were moments that I didn't really even register the change.
Disgust on the other hand...Kaling's particular brand of snark was sorely missed there.
Can’t wait
I’m curious how the movie handles the fact that Riley’s parents do not have these new emotions in the original movie, even though as mature adults they should have been there.
The Mom's console is run by Sadness and the Dad's console is run by Anger. The other emotions are there, but they don't run the console. So, if Joy runs Riley's console, and she was able to curb Anxiety, we assume her parents were when they were teenagers, as well.
I've been unimpressed by a lot of recent Pixar films after Incredibles 2 but Inside Out 2 is probably my favorite one in a long time
Sheets? Wow.
Inside Out 2 was the best Pixar sequel since Toy Story 3. Loved it.
Inside Out 2 hitting theater's this weekend. But should you stay "Inside", or head "out" to see it?
I watched this today, and it's the best pixar movie in a long time.
Hii ! I have a little question about the film. Is Bing Bong on it ?
@@emmajones1244 Unfortunately not
Finally Disney got one right. It's been a little while. Whoever they have in charge of this movie should be in charge of the rest of it.
The director was Kelsey Mann, who's been on the Pixar team for a while. The writers were Meg LeFauve, who wrote Inside Out and The Good Dinosaur, and Dave Holstein, who's mainly written for TV. In general, the people in charge of Inside Out 2 have been with Pixar for a long time.
No it was a slump for sure. This seems like they are back to form at least for this one.
I had a great time. Some jokes will go over the heads of kids but will land big with adults. At least, they did for me.
We loved the first one, this sounds great!
While it was good, the sequel didn't quite measure up to the original. It didn't engage my emotions like the first one did.
Why were Kaling and Hader replaced? Did they do something to anger Disney, or was it the other way around?
I just realized there was no Pixar short
Personally, I didn't really care for the first one. I didn't find the premise to be any more clever than that of 'Osmosis Jones'. I also found it a little ironic that Pixar, a movie studio that gets its jollies by emotionally manipulating their audience, made a movie about characters whose precise purpose was manipulating the emotions of a little girl.
I loved the movie, obviously pales to the first one, but I feel like it would have been better as a mini series so we could get to know the emotions better
can i ask and if you went over it in the review i apologize did not having mindy or bill bother cause i was very concered about that
No, it actually made it better.
@@ghosty4 why you don't like mindy and bill

Does the embargo gets “dropped” or “lifted” when you can finally put your review out?
usually the expression is lifted
It’s a great movie so no worries for those who are planning to watch it😅🎉🎉
I loved it
Don’t scare me like that with your thumbs Dan! I think we’re all hoping Pixar is going to come good after a bit of a rough patch. ❤
Very glad this movie didn't focus on teen romance. The film was just as thematically resonant, probably more so, for sticking to the messiness that is adolescent friendship.
How come the new emotions were not present in the first film? Adults can suffer anxiety and embarrassment.
Because she wasn't an adult in the first film, she was a young child and as Dan said, you develop emotional intelligence as you get older and mature hence introducing additional emotions in this when she's a teenager
@@yippykiyay89 Her parent's emotions were shown and only the original five emotions were present. Anxiety and embarrassment were not included with the parents.
Story telling tactics. Too many characters ruin good stories. Why franchises are attractive - you can expand your universe because your audience doesn't have to learn the rules of the world and be introduced to the core characters.
Because they didn’t write a sequel yet.
I think they wrote themselves into a corner. I would've kept the original emotions (characters) then just have a few of them go through an major emotional change, like the fear emotion gets more active or uppity. Maybe the emotions experience a "flow" in headquarters while Riley is in her puberty phase.
I just don't like the idea of the parents not having the same emotions (characters) as Riley.
Feels like I'm the only one who thought the first movie was just fine, slightly above average.
Same here.
Dan you tricked me thought you were not gonna like the film which is strange because I thought you were going to like it BUT you did awesome
How many of you rewinded to the video intro to find the reference after he mentioned it?
