@@shizzlecrystal5964 yeah I think it's moreso for protecting the scalp from the harsh sun not water. I wonder where she got that from

@@GreenBeauty do you have a video on protecting your ends while wearing knotless braids? Or can you make one. My ends always come out of the braids. It’s my biggest problem with protective styles but no one I ask seems to have answer for me. Thank you 🙏🏾
@@sarapetion twist instead of braiding
I do "low manipulation protective styles" where I loosely twist and tuck my ends under in a low, tension-free bun at the base of my neck. I still have to tidy it up every day, but it is a serious time saver! I spritz and re-moisturize every 2 days. I wash and deep-condition weekly. Since doing this (after watching your other video on protective styling), I've noticed significantly less breakage! Also, it gives me an opportunity to "baby" my crown area which tends to get drier and is more brittle (I think menopause has affected this). I still rock a wash 'n go occasionally. I share your videos with all my natural family & friends! They are so informative!

Low maintenance doesn’t mean no maintenance! There is no hairstyle that requires no maintenance not even bald.As usual awesome video! I appreciate the point of not allowing your hair to dry out! I have locs and some people get locs and think no maintenance but locs still need moisture and cleaning often to thrive!
You could preach a tape sermon on this point. I think we as black women have struggled with hair growth because many of us have the goal of doing no work on our hair. You have to do something no matter how you style your hair.
@@RochelletheRealtor true, but people will spend 5 hours, slaying, laying, melting, bleaching, bald capping a wig but not their hair, it's ironic that I wanted to get a wig and gave up because I got so tired watching wig videos, I was like natural hair is less bother than this and after all that work I'll actually have my own "inches" and more money in the bank, the wig's reward for all that hard work is too short-lived.

I have been following your channel for years (since I was a teen) and I just want to THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart. I’m in my early twenties now and I’ve been maintaining my hair (including washing, deep moisturizing, etc.) by myself with the help your videos. I am so much more comfortable with caring for my hair myself because I focus on root to tip solutions rather than “looking cute” -braiding was literally breaking my soft hair. God bless you. 💛
She is great as a hsor scientist. Try her coconut oil method before washing too.
I lightly moisturize EVERY night and put into about 13 twists, stretch with scrunchies and a scarf. Wearing a moisturized protective style each night allows me to wear it out without fear each day. It takes diligence but I’ve finally reached below boob lol.
What do you moisturize with and how do your stretch?
Yes..I have the same question!
I use aloe vera juice that has a fenugreek tea bag in it-in a spray bottle used lightly. I seal with a little bit of jojoba oil. I use a scrunchie to put my twists in a ponytail then I basically use the scrunchies like a threading technique all the way down my ponytail, wrap my head in a scarf and thats it! The next day I have an elongated twist out.
Sis… go ahead and make some videos ☺️
@@darrahmurray8513 Because of your comment I made a video. 🙂 It will be up tomorrow.
I once believed in that myths. I always do short term protective styles, dealing with my hair everyday is a life style I can't afford.
And hate.
I started leaving my hair in twists and twisting over once a month while washing with conditioner once a week. In between washes i keep the twists in a bun. After having an inch below collar bone hair all my life my hair is at armpit length in 4 months! Its all about figuring out how your hair personally works. I dont even use oils, products or extensions any more and if this keeps ill be mid back length this time next year! type 4
update?
Awesome! When you do a weekly wash do you leave them in the twists and rinse with water and then add conditioner is that how you wash with a conditioner?
My hair is 95% of the time in a 2strand twist and put away until it's time for a big event. I experience an average 3/4" of growth a month and oil/massage every single day. I started my natural hair journey after my friends and my hair is now longer than theirs. Keep your hands out of your hair, wash on the same day of every week, massage/oil daily and celebrate wearing beanies and headwraps. From rocking a fade for 20 years, to now having hair just above my bra strap in 16 months.
Thanks for the tips, I will try it!!
Do you deep condition?
@@milana2020 yes every week on wash day.
Wow, that amazing in 16months✨
Wow, amazing.
Mine is ten months and reaching my collar bone
I've lost a lot of hair due to protective styling and it took a long time to realize it was that and the butters. One day I had to cut the hairline and a few other spilt and damaged areas off and my hair is always loose, I only manipulate when moisturizing or cleansing. It's bouncing back. Most of what I use are very light and watery now. I just have to accept that I have fine hair that just needs to be.
I have very fine hair and can't wear extensions. Loose plaits and twists work best for me.
@ibex, how were the butters messing up your hair, drying it out? Also, what butters were you using? Thanks in advance for your response!
@@hs-qk9qf yes my hair would be dry and act like I didn't just take my time, moisturizing and sealing it.
@@ibexdelani6515 🤣, what kind of butters were you using?
@@hs-qk9qf well since I’ve stopped using raw Shea butter and incorporating better moisturising products my hair feels soft and woolly like when I was a child. My head hates tuck in hairstyles! It prefers braids. Ive noticed that my hear grows better and faster when i do braids(with extensions) vs natural hair twists.
Sameeeeeeee
Same here. I retain so much length with knotless braids, I also moisturize every other day and cleanse my scalp weekly.
Same. And for some reason my natural hair without extensions really tangles up especially near the scalp
@@yougotgamesonyourphone6947 please how do you clean your scalp while wearing braids?
@@maryannonwuka4741 some people use a stocking cap, others just wash it normally and redo the front/perimeter of their heads.
Long term protective styles ruin my hair especially if they involve added hair. I have found that low maintenance, short term, 3-5 days max works best for me. I put my hair in 7-15 sections depending on the type of braid or twist (15 sm/med French braids 13 individual braids, 9 chunky twists, When I do more flat braids I can moisturize my scalp and use light cream or oil to seep through the braids. If I do fewer chunky twist I can gently take them down every other day, massage my scalp with oil, and moisturize my hair. No matter what I always bunch the ends together and wrap them in a silk band then pin them up. These are all techniques I mixed and matched from Green Beauty advice.
That’s how you do it 🙌🏾
Yes! Braided extensions ruin my hair… they’re so cute 🥺 I miss them. But, my fro is thriving with my twists
Funny how this is almost the opposite for me. The short-term low manipulation hasn't helped with my hair growth. I'm trying out a long term protective style in braids without added hair, so I'll see.
Damn this is the exact opposite for me. I retained so much length with knotless braids
What is your hair type? I’m starting to think my hair doesn’t do well either w long term protective styles
Congrats on the baby! I like how you just snuck that in there 😇🙃 thank you for another awesome video and great reminder on how to properly take care of our hair. I always leave my ends untucked for some extra length. I want healthier hair, and longer hair so I'm going to try protective styling for a bit. I'm excited, plus it will be cold pretty soon where I live, so what better time to practice protective styling than in fall/winter!💜💟
I find that I experience less breakage when I do my hair myself. Currently I had gotten so burned out with doing my 2 sisters, 2 daughters & my own hair as well that I had paid someone to do my hair & they had braided my hair so tight that my edges straight feel out smh. I'm so sad n/c my braiding rule is NEVER put more extension hair in the braid than the clients actual hair in their head. . The braids were beautiful and uniform don't get me wrong but when you are a hairstylist or having paying customers come to you you need to know HAIR e to no hair, not just money but hair. You have to know how yo keep the hair healthy while braided & do your part in that as at braider.
Anyway that's my shpill for today!!!!!
Recently I tried loose twists (yea I know I’m late to the party). I was able to wear them for a week before re-moisturizing them. I really enjoyed styling them and enjoyed my hair in its stretched state. But I must say my ultimate go to protective style are mini twists which I try to do twice a year.
Currently, I'm doing African threading using regular yarn and it has reduced my hair loss during washing by a lot. I moisturize every 3-4 days but I feel like it should be every other day. Thank you for your informative videos.
That's my hair right now 😆 and the way it has become loose after just two weeks is crazy. This better mean growth .
Thanks for the reminder how important moisture is in a protective style. I’m on a growth and re-thicken journey and I’m well on my way 😁 I wear cornrolls and have moisturize and oil frequently with natural products like amla and brahmi 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾

Your hair is GORGEOUS! Shiny and healthy. Your skin is glowing...just beautiful!
I can't add weave to my protective style or my scalp 😫😩 will suffer. I usually do loc method with twist out. Over time the twist out were getting dry so I would get frustrated. Then, I realize I was not holding moisture due ot lack of sealant. Contrary to popular belief, I use blue magic to seal in leave in moisturizer for me and my hair is thriving...thicker and longer.
Great video!!
@@AP-ls1kh I don't find it difficult to wash out the grease. I use giovanni tea tree triple threat as my clarifying shampoo and then once a month when I detox I use a the clarifying shampoo and moisturizing shampoo.
Moisturizer + Blue Magic as a sealant = length retention. I’m finally seeing the results of yearssssszzzzz of supplements and hair treatments. Not a lot is needed and I’ve had no problem with build up cuz I use a sulphate shampoo at least once a month. Other times, I use a gentle shampoo.
Congrats on the baby!
Thank You
Love how you speak of our hair! Exclaiming it's greatness and goodness compared to others in a way I never heard. Thanks!
thank you for this! mini/medium twists as a protective style have helped my hair flourish so much over the years. I’ll usually keep them in for 1-3 weeks and rock the twist out for up to a week. this year I started throwing professional trims into the mix and my hair has never been healthier. now, let me go buy some coconut water 😭
This one I know off coconut water is one of the best for many things. I love putting my hair in protective style after using your ph spritz. This keeps my hair moist for days. Do not stop making it. Tight braid are the worst. I have lost my edges because of that. Great video. Always full of information.
Hi Green Beauties! Ever since I have started paying more attention to my ends by trimming them as needed my hair tangles less and less breakage! :)
My hair only loves wigs🤗 not lace fronts though regular old school wigs🤗 I don’t care if it doesn’t look like mine cause it ain’t🤩
We wear wigs coz we want to not that we have to
It'a so funny you say that! I feel like the amount of effort some wig wearers go through to make the wig look "natural" is counterproductive because people know it's a wig anyway.

I think protective styles especially mini twists have helped my hair immensely. It takes the guessing game out of what you're gonna do on wash day. But I am having issues with tension lately since I tend to twist tightly so I'm gonna try and ease the tension next wash day.
The glow on your hair is just amazing.
You are so beautiful and your hair is gorgeous. My hair is always in a protective style. I wear twist through the week. I remove them on Friday/ Saturday and wash again on Sunday. My hair is waist length. However It seems like I’ve been stuck at this length for a while. Happy growing 💕

Protective styles have been my holy grail along with low manipulation however I have also been going through some personal issues and the one thing to suffer has been my hair. In a fit of frustration last week as I was undoing my protective style (which had severely dried out) I started yanking the strands out and knotted clumps came out. All I needed to do was sprite my coconut water on my hair and slow down but frustration caused me to hurt myself. The other suggestion I would offer to this video is switch up your parts. Center, side, zig zag and even just comb through into a loose 2 strand braid with no part can be a life saver. The part about tension is so true. The only part of your hair that is "alive" is the part at the follicle. If you kill that then you will see bald patches and in some instances you won't recover so if your are doing your own hair don't pull and don't let ANY stylist pull too tight.
I hate protective styling without added hair. My hair shrinks up when properly moisturized and any drop of moisture makes it shrivel up. Mini twists and braids shrivel up and look like worms on my head. Two cornrows make me look baldhead and tuck in hairstyles are not my friend cuz of shrinkage. Wash and go’s doesn’t go hand in hand with my current job. My armpit length hair shrinks up above my ears and I hate it so much. A blown out style will end up looking like a smushed ball after 2 days. I keep my hair in knotless braids, moisturize prior, during, and I make sure I’m not yanking the hell out of edges. I spray with aloe Vera juice or a leave in mix, then I seal with oil or grease. Cleanse with ACV. My go to hair style that are not knotless braids is two pigtails with 1-2 strands of Marley hair.
Facts I have kept my hair in low maintenance twist, I use my grease for my scalp and my hair pomade for my hair, and I remoisturize every 4-5 DAYS. My hair has grown 13 inches in the last year.
Short marley twists have been the best for my hair! Easy to keep hydrated and doesn't pull on my strands. It also easy to wash and keep my hair out the way since I do a lot of high intensity work outs.
Apparently I've been doing no maintenance styles lol. My hair has been getting back to it's thickness from last year since being home so much, I was moisturising often and it was super shiny and bouncy.
It's still bouncy, but I lose track of moisture days and the AC at work etc is not helpful. So I've found myself in braids for most the time. But I don't moisturize as often as I should. Sigh.
This vid was my nudge to get my hair life back on track. (Pun not intended but celebrated nonetheless lol)
The One single entity I can think for helping me retaining so much length for so many years has been protective styles. Recently, though, I have found that my hair has gotten very use to the parts that I make and I'm starting to experience some thinning in those areas. I've decided to wear wash and goes for the next few months just so I can grow back some hair in those areas that I used to part all the time. Then I'm going to go back to my protective styles
Yes, that happened to me before. I’ll be posting a video on how to manage your grid 💚
@@GreenBeauty Thanks lovely! Can't wait to watch it!
@@GreenBeauty I can’t wait to see that video too 😉
Yes please would love that video!!
I'm the "Im too lazy to do anything to my hair" style😂😂. I love my hair, i just hate doing it so i wear a wig that takes 3 seconds to get on/comes off 3 seconds after i get in the house. I have simple braids under but I work out and have dry scalp so i have to wash my hair ever 2-3 weeks and don't be in the mood to be washing a whole bunch of hair all the time, but washing with cornrows just makes my life easy, until it's time to take them down lol.
I have tried many oils, creams, shampoos for the dry/itchy scalp and flakes and realized none of it works and the best thing that does work is for me is to just wash my hair when i get that itch. Putting oils on an itch only made things worse or only lasted one day. But aloe vera plant/grapeseed oil and even Sulfur 8 grease has allowed me to go longer without washing because i used to have to wash my hair every week. Me definitely keeping my hair braided has tremendously allowed me to retain length and get passed my breakage point because i wasn't taking care of my hair relaxed or natural, but now I'm on track.
Wow love this comment!! Are you me?
I didn’t begin to moisturize and hydrate my scalp two years ago, just taking it seriously this year. Then I had those tight braids on a dry scalp….no wonder braids would fall out all the time. My scalp was in hell for decades, I gave my hair nothing but hell no wounded it keeped looking like hell. I had a weave or wig in all this year until 4 days ago. As soon as I slipped those clips in my scalp was in pain. Did that for a week and got real with myself, hair looked like it was crying. Took out braids, trashed the wig, gave away the brand new braiding hair (A synthetic fiber wrapped around my hair for months at a time lol :( ), away. My hair for the first time can be itself.
Thanks for this post. I loc my hair 2 years ago for length retention and got it retwist way too tight which caused my hair to fall out and it left me with bald spots. I had to take down my locs. Lesson learnt be careful who allow to style your hair and don't be scared to get out the chair if your hair is being done too tightly.
Yes I live in low effort protective styles (I.e. 6-8 braids)! But I need to be better at moisturising them! Thanks for the videoooo ☺️
Your hair is so breathtakingly beautiful, as are you, as always! xo 😘😍🌸
This is bullying. I feel bullied and shamed. 😂😂😂 I do some cornrows and rock a wig without touching, moisturizing or doing anything to my hair during weeks. Yes, it breaks, yes, it becomes dry and stiff. And then, I dare to complain that my hair don't grow.
😂😂😂 I love your sense of humor. No one is perfect. What matters is that you know what the problem is. Hair is always growing. You’ll get to it, when you get to it 💚

This video is so timely. I’ve been having so much problems maintaining length these days. I can’t blame it on not having time either bc I work from home now. You and Kimmaytube are so helpful. I just need to be consistent, and not lazy.
Everyone’s consistent looks different. For example, you can do a quick wash day once a week. Or you can do a wash day once a month and re-moisturize once a week. Build a simple regimen that you know you can keep up with.

@@AP-ls1kh thank you for the suggestion. I’ve tried it in the past. The downside for me is my hair would start locing after the 3 rd week of having them in 🤦🏾♀️. Frustrating. I dream of a relaxer most days or just cutting all off and wearing it low.
@@cspann33 one reason your hair might be locing is if they aren't tight and firm enough. It shouldn't be too tight but it should still be firm. Another reason might be pouring water on it everyday.
If that's the case, you need to create a moisturizing routine that wouldn't require you to moisturize for at least a week. Don't take the relaxer just yet, research has it that it might be carcinogenic. Remember Jesus loves you and your hair's beautiful
Your hair is so beautiful 😍

i'm on a new hair journey since August after wearing a short tapered-almost fade for two years, anyway this time i wanted to do it right and studied my hair and my previous practices.
my hair strands are fine, synthetic hair is going nowhere near my scalp or strands anymore and neither are wigs with their combs/lace/wefts/wig cap/wig grip touching my hair strands. twist outs aren't low manipulation on fine hair, they last like 1 day, 2 days with a styling cream and gel, there's no 10 day hair. Currently doing mini braids and want to continue that for a very long time, because i just love the look on the people i've seen. I think Mini braids, scarves and grease will be my best friends going forward.
Absolutely agreeeee!! I’m on my second big chop and just rocking my fro and using my hair grease. And sometimes headscarves , they are so much better!
Twist outs can last more than one day on fine 4C hair if you don’t fluff it 😉

I use protective styles for my daughter’s hair. Her hair thrives with them. I am careful of her scalp and edges.
I’d rather be keeping my hair in twists or braids rather than hundreds of individual hair strands tangling and knotting up.
Since going natural I noticed that when I remove braids the braid hair tangles with my hair and causes a tangled mess!!! I love not having to comb my hair everyday so I usually protective styles that are easy to do...
I personally do not care about shrinkage because my hair its still there I didn’t loose it, also I stopped obsessing over hair growth I just have fun and see hairstyles that I can do with my hair

Just stopping in to let you know that I look forward to your videos more than any other channel. Using your advice and products, I’ve gotten past my plateau at shoulder length and I now have healthy strong hair that’s past bra strap length. Huge fan of your work! Thank you for all you do.
THERE IS NO WAY I CAN GET AHEAD OF DRYNESS! As soon as I moisturize, tie my hair up in a silk scarf and sleep on it the next day my hair is 95% dry:( Can you suggest some tips to help me? Also, be careful on the Coconut water: very high in carbs and sugars:(
Try and make sure you're not washing your hair with very hot water. Luke warm is fine. Apply a little leave in conditioner. I like to add grease as well because it acts as a clay that let's me mold and clump my hair to the desired form and manipulate it however necessary.
What may also be an issue is the shampoo you use. Is it very drying?
Try ph lowering products like roux porosity control, or shampoo with neutralizing shampoo. Also check into rinses and cellophane to coat the hair and keep the moisture locked in
Try deep conditioning regularly with heat and when applying moisturizer use heat as well, and then sealing with an oil/butter.
It’s so exciting to see ur video💚

Protective styles are a must have for me!❤️
Like you said in your previous video, can you make a video on hair clumping ?
God, I am so waiting for that vidéo too! Glad to know that I am not alone waiting for that video.
My problem is low maintenance = no maintenance. I’m sitting here now (Friday) with my hair in two pig tails that have been in since Saturday.
😂
I ***hate*** the tension and pain from protective styles. So what what protective styles can I get that helps avoids so far I have found that butterfly lovs are perfect 🦋 ❤💙
I’ve had good and bad exposure to protective styles. I’ve decided NEVER to do a sew in again 1 it tears my hair out 2 really hard to wash and moisturize and 3 it causes SO MUCH shedding like the thread cut the hair at the base 🥺🥺 I almost cried😭😭😭….. and I don’t do crochet for the same reasons! But I do love Love LOVE ❤️ me some braids and some locs 😜
I used to do this half braid, half wash and wear... for a minute (decades) idk I was a hot #bluemagic mess in the 90s/00s... The side I braided is just balding, and thin, weakened curl, now. The side I didn't has no balding. Low and thick hair line. It is shockingly contrasted.
Thank you so much for this video! I was happy to learn I'm going a lot right but the you touched on some things I not doing right. Like letting my hair stay dry too long when in twist extensions.
Protective styles! A ying and yang. Because I'm not blessed with magic hands to braid nice things on my head. So the worst part is sitting in the hairdresser and keep telling her shy and politely to not pull my hair. But they helped me a lot in my hair journey.
Let's go on a journey to learn to braid our own hair!!
I learned over time to pay attention to what my hair likes and what it doesn’t like. I have a lot of hair but my strands are thin. This is very challenging for me because it tangles and dries out quickly. Also for me, crotchet braids and adding extensions for a cute long term protective was a nightmare. Mainly because my hair is unable to get the moisture it needs. And I get lazy and impatient when it’s time to take the style out. Currently, I wear my hair in two strand twists and it’s growing beautifully. Thanks for sharing your knowledge & experience! Your videos have helped my hair care journey so much❤️
Could you pretty please do a video about newborn, infant, and toddler natural hair care and hair styles.
Nice video welcome back sis
Thank so happy to be back
My hair has grown so much since the pandemic started lol. I got that pandemic hair 😜
My hair is relaxed but I love your approach to hair care and use a lot of your tips. Love your versions of protective styles, I only do long term protective styles such a braids but those tend to break off my edges. I've definitely been more into the low manipulation and short term protective styles lately:)
Please do a video about dry roots. Within hours of moisturising my roots are brittle but not the length of my hair.

Hey Sis !!!! 👋🏾💚💚💚💚😘😘
So, I do mini twist and go from a month to like 3 months with them in. I wear it down for a week and after while it gets looking a bit weird. I then put in in cute little styles like buns, space buns, half up half down, pig tails, pony tail, etc. I spritz it with water and put moisturizer and oil on it. My hair is NEVER tight, always loose. My hair is growing constantly and it mid back. I am trying to achieve waist length.
There are times where my overall hair is soft and moisturized, but the roots are matted and tangled. How can I achieve soft, detangled roots?
Going through the same thing
You can’t, that’s how the hair grows, even more so when your constantly moisturizing and adding oil to the scalp. Especially for low porosity hair you have to take your time detangling. Finger detangle first, then use a wide tooth comb very slowly.
She’s has a video where she talks about “scooping and spreading” previously she called it “scritch and preen”. You basically use use your finger tips or nail beds along with water and a little oil to gently scoop up the sebum from your roots and scalp and spread it down the length of your strands so it doesn’t build up. That technique has work for my matted roots.
Try Scooping & Spreading your sebum down the length of your hair. It’s hard for the natural sebum that your scalp produces to slide down the length of your hair so, it gets stuck at your roots and builds up. Also debris from the air sticks to the buildup. Causing our roots to matt. You see this more dramatically when people have braids in for a long time. If you scoop & spread at least once a week, you manually breakup this buildup. Your roots benefit b/c they are no longer matted and your hair strands benefit b/c as you buildup sebum coverage, your hair stays moisturized for a longer period of time. I have a video up on how I Scoop&Spread
@@GreenBeauty I've watched those videos but didn't understand how necessary it is to scoop and spread at the roots. I'VE GOT IT NOW. Thanks Green Beauty and subscribers.
I love that you don’t rely on fake hair for your protective style.
This is all good for long natural hair. How about those of us with Twas?
if your hair is 1-2 inches, it should be healthy enough to not need to be put in protective styles. If you want to protect it more, my trichologists recommend finger coils to keep the hair stretched and help it retain more moisture. You might have to moisturise your twa daily. After 3 inches, you should be able to twists it/bantu knot it/thread it.
I got 2 inches and it's in mini braids, I can't styles that can be easily unravelled due to playing in my hair too much
I cut my hair off completely in July 2019 due to heat damage. It was a micro Afro. Once it got to two inches I styled it in mini flat twists and African threading. Try it. Good luck!
Drawing Vervine leaves also helped me with breast milk production
Protective styles have helped me. I don't ever use added hair thought.
I loved protective styles in the beginning. Now, I like to keep my hair in a ponytail but add oils and more water than ever. Less protective. More wash n go.
