- I can't believe I called it a hot water heater. It's just a water heater, and usually heats cold water!
In this video I mount an instant hot water shower in a Pelican style case, to take with my on my long overlanding and camping trips. It'll make things so much nicer, since I found the wet wipes just weren't cutting it in the desert last summer!
Note that finding fittings for this was difficult, but the ones I have listed below are a perfect fit.

NOTES:
- Heater unit takes 1/2” BSPP fittings on all water and propane in/out.
- 3/8” hose is used in my kit, and you can use 1/2” barb with it if 3/8” isn’t available.
- The quick disconnects and the barbs that attach them to the hose are 3/4” GHT (garden hose thread), and this is the standard thread found on garden hoses.
- Avoid mixing metals on the fittings. A brass fitting connected to a stainless steel fitting is likely to corrode quickly. If you have to mix metals, do not mix them on the heater unit itself. If it corrodes to the heater unit, you might never get the fittings off!

I'm putting this system together this summer. Have the pelican box already. Just need the water heater. We normally will primitive camp for up to 5 days, will be nice to have a hot shower at night.

I bought a buck converter to get the 12V voltage down to 3V to see If I can directly power the heater without the D cell batteries

We bought this heater unit to wash our dogs when the weather is cooler outside. Works like a champ. I was a bit pessimistic about how well it would function, but I was impressed. In a clinch this thing would make your 3rd world situation a bit nicer. Love the idea of using the box for travel and setup.
How is it after a years use

This was an exact replacement for the old one that lasted about 10 years. ua-cam.com/users/postUgkx7yWIKcrbA9KMHkGSfcgxW2lsjHT6B8Sh The top of my mitigation tube by my roofline was just a 90 elbow which allowed too much debris to fall down into the fan, eventually ruining it. Without this issue, I bet it would have kept running another 10 years. When I replaced this fan, I added an extra elbow joint so the top tube now it does a 180, which should solve that problem. The radon guys around here wanted to charge me a $300 diagnostic fee, then parts/labor (probably close to $600 total). I installed this all by myself in about an hour for the cost of the fan; it would probably be even easier/faster with two people. FYI the manufacturer's warranty greatly differs depending on whether you install it yourself (1 yr warranty) or have a licensed installer do it (10 yrs).
I bought this exact one for my RV once my in house tank split. It works no problem with the RV's fresh water tank pump and it works only when I turn the shower head on so uses much less water. Another HUGE bonus is it uses it's own separate propane tank. I even mounted it on the shower wall. The flame is contained within it and poses no huge risk, however it is wise to be very vigilant in that sense, but can be done.. Love it so far.

I followed this after watching your video, and it was on-point with the instructions!
To fix the issue with the hose coiling up in the water tank, I essentially made a "tumbler straw". I bought some 1/2" PVC, a coupler with regular female on one side and FPT on the other, and a nylon 1/2 MIP to 3/8" barb. I cut the end at an angle to seat better with the bottom, and it works great! You don't have to glue the coupler, as the suction from pump is plenty to keep it together. All for about $7 USD.
Also, I went with a 25 ft expandable garden hose (there is a 15 ft, but it's more expensive) for the shower head. It compresses really nicely and fits a little better inside the case.

Awesome idea! I've been using black solar shower bags. I would have to boondock a lot to justify the cost of everything you used to make this awesome build.
Excellent instructions. Made this today off your parts list and step by step instructions and it works perfectly. I did up size to the slightly larger Pelican box and everything fit nicely inside.

I have this unit mounted in my truck. Used a privacy tent with a hole in the top to run the shower head. Worked well.

Great setup! Just wanted to mention to you and others that may build one of these that you don't really require clamps on the suction line of your pump since it will always have negative pressure ( vacuum) on it when the pump is running. I like the idea of the quick connect on the pressure hose. By throwing in a garden hose head attachment with quick connect, you can pop it on and just run cold water through it to blast a little crud off your feet or tires or wake up a friend who has overslept (from a safe distance).
Use a clamp, over time and usage the hose will relax and allow air to get in.
Very helpful build information, Thank You! I really like how compact and self-contained this is, it will be a nice piece of kit for our teardrop. We use the teardrop for camping, but we also have it set up as a 'bug-out' rig in the event of wildfire or other natural disaster. We already have solar, LP gas and water onboard, so this is like the icing on the cake. I used a few of your links and like the way you set this up, so will follow your build pretty much spot on, with the exception of using silicone 3/8" tubing on the outlet side. I also want to access water various ways, trailer source, Jerrycan, or just throw the intake into a creek or lake. Should all be possible with a few extra fittings and hose. Thanks again, great instructions! I also made connections for an external battery (alligator clips) and, cigar lighter.
BTW thanks for leaving the "forgot the battery" part, during your editing, makes me feel a lot better about some other SNAFU's that just happens with builds such as this.

You're a genius. Thanks for sharing. The only update is to route the hose that was leaking outside of box so if it leaks it doesn't sit in box, you don't want to store water and 12v connections in same space.

Nice job! Just a tip, I have those same black and brass quick connectors - keep them lubed with a light lubricant or they get sticky and fail to couple correctly. You'll see the little ball bearings inside the female ends.
In a moment of weakness, I splurged on the Joolca recently. Part of it was that I was intimidated by assembling one of these myself. If I had seen your video, I would not have been. I very much like that it is all contained in a weather resistant box that could go on my roof rack.

You can build so many of those things that ran your cost up. Nice job and thanks for presenting this link and idea. You can get an adapter to refill the mini fuel cans (1-2 lbs)

Add washers to the screws that come through the case before the nuts pull through the plastic, Distribute the pressure!

Nice build! I like the idea of mounting it in a box. I have a similar shower heater. It’s a different brand (Eccoflow) but looks almost identical. I ended up mounting the pump underneath my off-road trailer and mounting RV type inlet/outlet fittings on a panel on the outside of the trailer. So when I want to shower, I take out two hoses, one from the tank to the inlet, and one from the outlet and into the heater. Both have garden hose quick connect fittings. The shower head that comes with your heater looks a lot better than the one that came with mine. The on/off button on mine would constantly get stuck and was almost impossible to use, so I went to Home Depot and bought a new shower head and mounted a 1/4 turn ball valve on it. Works great.
Nice! If I had a trailer I would definitely hard mount my pump close to the tank. For the portable setup it works well in the box.
Henrik, instead of traditional shower head, you could buy a socalled "bide-shower-head", wich is originally used for the toilet sides. On this tap there is the flow switch included in the shower head handing

If the can has a vent, you could adapt the cap with a fitting & set can on its side. Less likely to leak if no lower fitting. Could add a vent or small hole on tank top opposite the cap if not vented. Cap can then be moved from one tank to another if needed.

Wow, this is so timely for me. My wife and I subscribed to you a few months ago for overlanding since we're moving to Utah this year but we just decided that we're going to convert an old school bus "Skoolie" into a motorhome and travel around a few years. Or maybe forever? We were thinking of going with an instant hot water heater so this is perfect timing!
We're going to make the back part of the bus a garage for tools and two dualsport motorcycles and tow my 2000 4Runner Limited behind it. It'll be a sweet Overlanding setup! 🤘

I put quick disconnects like you have on a garden hose on the bottom of mine so now I can move it around and plug it in anywhere

A really Great Idea! Call me crazy, but after a day of camping, being covered in sweat, DEET, and bonfire smoke I like a quick shower before sliding into bed in my little 2010 Ford Transit Connect Campervan I am building. I installed a 15 gallon water tank, have pressurized water for my sink and current cold water shower. Just need a "T"connector for my 1/2 sized propane tank and connect it up. Makes camping much more civilized and nice to come home after a long weekend clean. oh, I like your shirt, Heathen? Happy Travels!

I have the same one I put it in my RV I had it is it for 2 years it is fantastic and I also put one in my house in the basement and it does the job
Some ideas I have are to hard pipe the connections inside the box to maximize space and plumb these to the walls of the box with quick disconnects to the outside of the box. That way you don’t have to mess with anything inside the box. I also have a pump pressurized water tank so I am going to try and use that with out the electric pump.
Really like this set up. Just a suggesting on the pump hose. There is a silicone hose in that size that is much more pliable/relaxed than the vinyl/mesh tubing. It just behaves better and can hang more freely whereas the vinyl likes to remain coiled.
I have a Triton 10LPropane camp shower heater that supplies hot water for my cabin. Have used it for the past four years and have never had a problem with it. I love the fact that it only uses propane where you turn the hot water on. Wouldn't take for it and will always have one in my cabin.

A lot of small commercial businesses which have a few number of employees have instant hot water install under their sink . They're only 12"x12"x4" in size and cost a few hundred dollars plus they don't required anything but a water supply and electricity. They are completely covered under the Uniformed Plumbing Code. I'm really surprised nobody has thought to used them camping

You buy a water heater then you find out it should be installed outside but you also find out it can't be in the weather. These manufacturers need to wake up that people like once it is assembled they don't like to pull it apart to store it inside every time they use it. Thanks for your idea -I've ordered a hard suit case to mount it in on the side of my caravan [$70 Au dollars] because we've had light rain almost every day for 3 weeks. The output hose is too short and it has quick release for the water connections but not on the gas ,but in saying this the unit works great
If this is going to be your final design, instead of machine screws and nuts, you could use some blind rivets. They would not come loose from vibrations, and would look a lot more cleaner. Been looking for a idea for a overland rig and this just what I was thinking myself.

If you put the shower tube inside another tube, with an air gap between them, that ought to provide enough insulation to prevent that little bit of water in the handle from getting cold, but that's just a pluperfect. Great build!

I use a heat exchanger on my rig, I use the engine to heat up the water, it moves through the system so quick it's never too hot except when you first turn it one Water enters a line at the back of the truck through water storage or stream to heat exchanger then travel back via RV pump.

Im not going to go with a water heater like this, i don't want the hassle of storage, getting a small tank refilled, getting a shower tent, the costs will just add up to being an expensive pain in the butt.
That being said, i watched the whole video and think you did a great job. Im going to go with the sixty dollar drop in the 5 gal bucket pump, and just heat a gallon of water to add to the 3 gallons of water in the bucket and be able to shower in my cargo trailer. If i was going to spend the money on all this, i would follow your set up. It's really a nice setup the way you did it. Great job!

To keep the hose from curling up inside the water container attach a 12" length of PVC pipe with zip-ties. As if you were applying an improvised splint to a broken finger or limb. Great project! Thanks!

BSPP (British Standard Parallel Pipe) type fittings are almost unheard of here in the US where NTP is king. It appears that ALL of these little on-demand propane water heaters use the same BSPP fittings. I did one last year and it took me weeks and lots of $$ to find adapters. Your readers don't realize how lucky they are that you have already done the leg work for them.
You don't need to get a $27 fitting from McMaster. It's just a 3/8 male flare x 1/2 in female NPT elbow. $6.99 at ACE (part #47187)
