Very clear and informative tutorial. Thank you! Ready to find drafting tape; since full sheet of Arches' subject is painted and waiting this final step.
I am using this method with the drafting tape around the edges - but I use parchment or wax paper over the painted subject instead of all that tape and paper. Easier and keeps paint from seeping thru.
Your painting is wonderful! Did you paint 2 or 3 layers of the dark mix over the background? Backgrounds have always been my nemesis and you explained this so well. I just subscribed to your channel...looking forward to more of your helpful videos.
Yes, I typically paint 3 or 4 layers of dark mix over the colors to get a really dark background and less if I want more of the colors to show through. Thanks so much for subscribing!
It's a learning process, so in your next painting you know that you need to make it darker next. Perhaps you could practice on a spare sheet of paper until you find out how dark you like?
This an exciting technique, thank you.
I had no idea this has been so helpful!!
This was very nicely presented!! Thank you for sharing!!!😊♥️
You are so welcome
Thank you for tor teaching. Great info

That’s a great idea! I’ll try parchment paper next time.
Excellent tutorial!
Thank you! I'm glad you liked it!
Beautifully done
Thank you!
I didn't know you could use masking tape this way! Thank you for sharing
You're welcome!
Its drafting tape, NOT masking tape.
That was WONDERFUL! Subscribed. Beautiful work.
Theresa Jennings I’m so glad you liked it, and thanks for subscribing! 😍
@@SusanMonroeArt I'm working on a painting now, and the background was just bugging me. Starting over, using your ideas.
Theresa Jennings Let me know how it turns out! And make sure your drafting tape is on firmly!
@@SusanMonroeArt I'll be using masking fluid. The subject is too airy. Too much background showing through. :-)
Thank you so much! This is exactly what I was looking for. New subscriber here!
Great!!! Thanks for subscribing!

How do you cut away the edges with an exacto knife without cutting the paper?
I am wondering the same thing. Great background demo!
Good question! I just press very lightly with a sharp new exacta blade. If the blade is dull, you have to press harder and it can score the paper.
What if your multi colored background was not dark enough?

I'm surprised the tape doesn't pull off the painted color.
OMG YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS
