The bones in that kind of mackerel or salmon have been softened by the processing. This means you can eat the bones with no fear. It also means that the calcium content is higher.

I live on the Gulf Coast so growing up we ate a LOT of fresh fish--WHOLE fish--long before fillets were a thing, so I learned at an early age how to pick out the bones but of course got a bone stuck in my throat more than once. 🤦‍♀️ But my mother would use canned salmon to make salmon patties (and canned cod fish to make codfish patties) during Lent and when she told me I could eat the bones I couldn’t believe it!!! FINALLY fish bones I didn’t have to worry about!!! 😂 She would break and crush the bones up into the patty mix for extra calcium. Today I still used canned salmon to make salmon patties all year round and I still crush the bones and put them in the mix!!!

Mackerel is definitely an oily fish. An alternate way to prepare that kind of mackerel would be to break it up like you did for the fish cakes and simmer it in teriyaki sauce or a sweetened soy sauce mixture until it’s heated through. Then you mix it into cooked rice.

My case manager is trying to find something further away that she might be able to pick food up for me from but we haven’t found anything yet. I can’t work but I do take art commissions and I can’t get the church to help me. Food banks require ID here. My case manager is looking for some further away that don’t…but then we hit the problem of them only serving people in those towns. Also you can definitely just use mayo in crab/fish cakes. I used to make both crab cakes and salmon croquettes at an old job. We just used mayo and panko bread crumbs as binders. The key is to preform the cakes and chill them before cooking. If they're still kind of crumbly they don't have enough mayo. We also dredged the salmon croquettes in a breadcrumb/crushed pistachio mixture before frying, and crabcakes were cooked on the flat top grill, not fried at all. Grilled crabcakes are surprisingly good!

While my husband and I were homeless we often had a single burner butane camping stove and that was a common way to cook while having no oven or toaster oven. In the place we are at now, we have a toaster oven rather than a conventional oven, and for many people that would be a relatively low end buy in, we got ours for $20 on walmart's website, for the whole toaster oven. And it's been working for a year now, regularly and rather well. Granted, many hotels do not allow toaster ovens, many motels do allow electric skillets for cooking. I love what you do, and applaude your creativity! Your holiday meals in particular are absolutely inspiring, and you definitely know how to stretch your products and your dollar, not to mention your ability just to _find_ certain products! I just want to also encourage anyone who _can_ (because I know going to multiple places is not always a feasible option) to do the math on your items! I have found some things have cheaper unit prices at other places, or come in smaller (and therefore cheaper total price) packages.
I don't say this to be patronizing - I know that a lot of people know this already, but Dollar Tree has long marketed itself as (and has the perception of) being the cheapest place to buy things, so you'd be surprised who might not ❤ And especially with the Dollar Plus stuff, calculating your unit prices against other stores is so important.
In my own life I often have to tell myself "it's not what you save, it's what you spend", so there are things that I know I use where the unit price is a better representation of what I'm spending, and some things where the total price of the item is more important because I'm only using it once.

I've made pastry cups by cooking on the reverse side of the muffin cups. Spray the outside of the muffin tin, little piece of parchment optional, then form a blob of dough over the outside of each muffin cup. Cook upside down muffin tin as usual. I've put a cookie sheet on the shelf below just in case the dough expands and falls off the edge of the tin. If the muffin tin has a seam where the cup meets the flat part this will not work as the dough will cook into the seam and get stuck.

This house keeps cheaper tinned mackerel and chub salmon in the pantry. It’s shelf stable, good for emergencies and menu variety, and at a decent price for non-plant protein. We’ve used all kinds of carbs for filler and usually use mayo to bind instead of whole egg. One patty in a prepped sandwich on toasted bread or two patties with sauce are typically enough to sate a hungry adult as an entree. If you season well and fry it crisp, they are so much nicer than the price would make you think.

I love the dollar tree $3-$5 section for my meat and the Kroger $5 packages of 10 chicken legs and 5 pork chops. It's just me so this gives me more of a variety of meat protein. I also enjoy the $1.25 cheese because I hardly use it. The qrts of milk are perfect.

oh my! I wish mine had that! it's just prepared food in the $3, $4, and $5 section for me. The only meats are the $5 packs of shrimp and salmon, which are super helpful though when you only need a little bit.

The bones are in canned salmon and mackerel, my mom always used canned salmon and, that’s what, I use. But, my mom from time to time didn’t get all the bones out and, not good when, they get caught on your teeth! I won’t be buying salmon for quite sometime now, as they went back up to close to $4 a can! 13:49

Congratulations on hopefully the first of many many sponsors!! While the price hike on those dumplings is disappointing, if you got two packs plus two packs of the 5 count ramen, that’s ten meals for $1.05 each! Plus four extra dumplings as a small meal or appetizer. Not too bad if you can spread it out across a cheaper dish. Thanks as always for the inspiration, I hope they add a veggie option soon too!

🎉Congratulations for ur first sponsor!!! Everything looked good even the mackerel patties, not going to lie...was worried fot a tiny bit....L0L!! Please make more peppermint chocolate desserts like.... (chocolate chip cookies, brownies, chocolate bars) that cake looked delicious but I would definitely do less frosting or not warm it at all, so you can create the marble look...anyway, great job for sharing such great ideas 🫶😊

Wow! Very exciting news! ❤️ When i first stumbled across your show I was upset that you were using prepared boxed, canned,& frozen fast …….food. Like Baking mixes, and boxed Mac & cheezec, canned frosting, and processed meats. Hum….ive studied and taught healthy natural food preparation using Whole clean Foods. …so…..I understand …we must do what we can, with what we have!

It all looked so good! With the cake I would have layered the frosting directly onto the cake. Maybe start with just white and then drizzle the red and chocolate onto the white frosting before giving it a bit of a swirl with a knife. I feel like pouring it into the bowl while they were freshly melted made them mix together too well in the bowl...and the extra swirl in the bowl may have mixed it even further. It looks really cute though! And I'm sure it was delicious! Congratulations on the sponsorship! You deserve it!

    1. I often skip over sponsorship segments in UA-cam videos because I'm not in the market for a mattress or whatever, but I was very interested to see what you bought from FabFitFun. Really handy items! Congratulations on sponsorship!
    2. Because of your love for biscuits and sausage gravy, I've also become a fan! I've had this combo, mostly when at conferences or working events in the south, but it isn't a big staple in New England. Dollar Tree biscuit mix and home made gravy with sausage make for an easy, freezable treat.
    3. I really learned a LOT from you from your weekly/month-long budget series. Your tremendous work and effort to make those videos seemed intense, but those really impacted my own budgeting and meal-planning in a very positive way. I'm wasting a lot less food and feeling happier about how I'm using ingredients in more creative ways.
    4. I decided to use a pantry and menu tracking app (I just wish it also helped me to track salt, but nothing is perfect).... there are a bunch of different apps, some free, some not, that offer different types of features. I'm still adding food to my list, but I've already found it really useful.

Mackeral is what's termed an 'oily' fish! The good news is this means it's one the kind healthcare professionals recommend you eat regularly if you can. Tinned or other self-stable options like the one shown in this video provide a good alternative to fresh fish. Other oily fish include sardine, salmon, herring and tuna, but it's important to note that whilst tinned sardines, salmon and herring count as oily, tinned tuna doesn't count, only fresh.
Congratulations on your first sponsorship - I hope you feel proud, you do a great job. Your understanding of how we approach food - visually, by smell, then by taste - your willingness to try things on camera you aren't sure you're going to like, and your wiliness to experiment, all make you a great model for all of us :)

I adore the Hershey peppermint kisses that come out during the holidays. Each year I get a few bags and freeze them. Today I pulled about 1/4 bag out and unwrapped them and crushed them up then I got a cheap box of fudge brownie mix. Mixed up the brownies and put them in a pan then sprinkled the peppermint kisses on top and baked pet box directions. They were so so good and I’m having to force myself not to eat the whole pan in one day lol.

That chilli crisp is going to change your life! Try plain hot plain rice, mix in an egg and a spoonful of chilli crisp (the heat of the rice will cook the egg). Add soy sauce to taste. It is Japanese and called Tamago Kake Gohan. You can add cooked veggies and cilantro if you want as well. This makes a great quick and cheap breakfast or lunch. I sometimes even eat it for dinner because it is quick and easy!
You could even add some of that mackerel if you wanted some extra protein!

I like making tuna patties, I'll send you thst recipe just for reference
    Heather's tuna patties
2 regular size cans of tuna drained
    12-15 saltine crackers crushed
    1 Tablespoon of mayonnaise
1/4 of a cup of finely diced white onion
    2 eggs
    1 good teaspoon of sage
1 Tablespoon fresh chopped parsley...or 1 teaspoon dried
    1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese
Mix all ingredients shape into balls then flatten, making them the same thickness throughout.......foil line a baking sheet, spray with cooking spray.....lay one saltine crackers down for each pattie made, I usually get 4 from this recipe, the crackers helps to keep it from sticking, bake 15-20 minutes on top rack, serve with homemade tarter sauce......really good pared with salad, and a piece of toast.
*** can pan fry in oil, no need for the extra saltines, I like mine baked but both ways are good........Enjoy!

Yummy mackerel, I would gently warm the fish by inserting the bowl with the fish inside into another bowl of warm water , thereafter I would put the fish over a prepared rice ( the kind that comes in a pouch that’s already cooked) we don’t have a kitchen, no access to a kitchen so we warm our canned/prepared food items with warm tap water

A suggestion for the cake: spread white icing on one half of the cake and red icing on the other, then use a knife to swirl them together. I guess you could do this with all three icings too. No need to microwave the icings.

Stamp and Go is a Jamaican favourite :) and the base is pretty simple to remember: In Parts, 2 Flour, 1 Salt Cod Fish, 1 Chopped Veg + Baking Power, Salt and Pepper, flavoured spice mix at your discretion (careful with the salt). What I have learned is, salt cod is good (some crazy good Jamaican shops here) but if all you had was the tinned usual suspects, go with them and enjoy. Tinned makes it easy-peasy too, open a can of tuna, use the tuna in the can and the water, fill the can two times with flour and one time with veggies like frozen peas (any mix will do, just 1 tin is needed), teaspoon of baking powder salt and pepper and mix (add additional water for the right texture). Form cakes and fry and enjoy. :) While without a doubt NOT authentic Stamp and Go , the idea is true to its roots and reachable by a wide range of people.
