The Minisforum UM780 XTX packs quite a punch with the Radeon 780M GPU and Ryzen 7840HS CPU. It also comes with some unique features like an RGB top panel with customizable design, and an OCulink port for exceptional eGPU performance. This mini PC can easily handle any day to day office or school tasks. So I'm going to test how well it can game. Even trying the latest AAA GPU killers like Alan Wake 2!

I bought the barebone version of a 790 PRO few months ago and I really love it. It's equipped with two WD_SN850X of 2TB each and 2x16GB Crucial RAM modules. It's really a beast emulation machine.
I only run Batocera on it, and it emulates PS3 WiiU and Switch games really really good.
Would be great to see a performance comparison between the 780 XTX and the 790pro.
    Thank you for the video.

Hi David. Do you know if an external HDD via USB 3 would perform as well for Emulation? I really would like to get a mini PC, but emulate via a 8TB external HDD with mayby RetroBat and all the roms on it. It's cheaper and I don't think 2 or 4TB will be sufficient for me.

    • @davidfuster6919
      @davidfuster6919 5 місяців тому

Hi @@lenniskovgaard8278 sorry for the late reply.
Actually, after my original post, I bough a WD Black P10 5TB HDD, because I was running out of space. It's now connected to one of the rear USB A ports.
      I tell you my experience:
Although the P10 is a good drive, and it spins at 7200RPM, it's still a mechanical HDD and the difference between it and the nvme drives is huge in both reading and writing.
That being said: you won't really see any difference when it comes to emulation, BUT... I didn't test it with the following emulators: all Switch emulators, PS3, Xbox360, Wiiu, and even PSVita. Keep in mind that some of the games of the mentioned systems can be even 20GB big, and the read speed of a mechanical HDD is pretty slow (compared to nowadays SDDs) even if it's a high-end HDD. Even though the emulator "caches" the game (or part of it) in memory, it has to read that part of the game data while booting it in order to dump it in memory, which could be slow.
Another thing that I've noticed is that, since there's is huge difference in read speeds, the UI began to be a bit lagged. That was because a big part of the scraped images, icons, videos, etc (which are a lot) were in the HDD. The time spent by the mechanical disk to read all these files causes a pretty noticeable difference, i.e.: accessing some UI elements for the first time was a bit slow and the transitions were not as smooth as they were before, when all the data was in the SSD (once all the scrape elements were in memory, the transitions were smooth).
I don't know how retrobat works, but in Batocera you can force the system to cache all (or at least most of the) UI elements in memory while booting (which increases boot time), this way you can get rid of some of the lag while navigating through the UI for the first time.
That's what I ended up doing: all the games from the last generations of consoles in the SSDs, the operating system obviously in the SSDs as well (although I believe that, in Batocera, the entire OS it's dumped into memory at boot, but anyway reading the required files while booting is much more faster), all the scraped elements (images, logos, icons, videos,...) in the SSDs (even the xml files with games list). The rest of the games in the HDD. With this approach everything works smooth and fast. The only thing
is that the boot time is a bit longer than it was with only the SSDs (not too much, just a few seconds). That's because, even all the elements (but the mentioned games) are in the SSD, the system still has to go through every single folder looking for games in order to update the game list, and a lot of those folders are in the HDD.
From my experience, I won't buy an HDD again, even a high-end HDD. If I have to buy another storage device in the future, I will go for a SATA3 SSD with an external case, or any external SSD from a recognized brand when I find a worth deal.

Hey Daniel, didn't realize you were a mini PC enthusiast, I've been recently becoming one (last month really, lol). So with the release of the 8600g and 8700g, I've been wondering if I'd be better off getting something like this pre-built or going the 8700g route. I didn't know about the 7840HS until I started researching SFF PC's and hearing about the 8600 and 8700 apu's. I know those are desktop parts vs the 7840HS which is a mobile part, but since the HS is running in a desktop formfactor, it seems like the wattage is close to the same. I was even considering building a passively cooled 8700g system, but the price and the build quality seem hard to beat here with the Minisforum mini-pc. I'm taking a year or two away from gaming, and I've been taking an "underpowered" approach to gaming the last couple of years anyway (I have an i3-10100F with a 6400XT). I mainly played AC Valhalla with some aggressive FSR and absolutely loved it. In any case, I'm retiring from gaming for a couple of years, but I still want to have the option. Also, the passmark on both the 7840HS and the 8600g and 8700g eclipse my current i3 by a mile. I produce music and I'm a software developer. I can't justify the full tower that's taking up considerable real estate in my bedroom. From what I can tell, aside of the higher wattage, the 8600g and 8700g also have a neural processing unit, wondering if it's worth the premium over the Minisforum. I almost feel like we'll see an 8700g based variant of Minisforum mini-pc in the near future. Not sure what I'm asking really, but would love your thoughts if you have any, thanks!

    • @c99kfm

The 780M (as tested in the video) is between 1/2 and 2/3 the performance of a RX 5500 XT, depending on game. It's about equivalent to a 1050 Ti. It's amazing because it is that powerful in spite of being an iGPU, but it nevertheless is still an iGPU, so curb your expectations. That being said, building a solid computer around this when it releases for desktop (the 8700G seems to be launching in January) will give you something you can game on without a discrete GPU, if your budget doesn't reach all the way to where you want to eventually land, or if you're waiting for the next generation of GPUs to release.

@@c99kfm The 8700G will have essentially the same GPU core as the APUS with 780M (and sadly only the top 8700G APU also has the top of the line GPU it seems), though possibly with higher core and ram clocks and power limits than what's in the mobile APUs so it may be able to go a little faster. Think we'll really have to wait for the next generation to see any anything that can surpass a cheap previous gen discrete GPU.

@@c99kfm Oh I just meant it as in we won't see it in this generation. I don't know if the reason we're not seeing it is due to them not wanting to go there for some intentional marked reason or if it's more that it's not feasible for a reasonable cost to make something akin to the console APUs work well on a desktop platform. I suspect it's more of the latter as I think there would be a significant marked for something like a 8500G with a RX6600 level iGPU in pre-build gaming pcs and laptops as that would drasticly reduce the cost compared to building them with discrete gpus but idk
Apple is showing that it's possible to make a SoC with a pretty beefy GPU at least.

A lot of people looking for low-end graphics cards won't even be on the right platform to be able to use the latest and greatest AMD APUs, and might not want to upgrade their entire platform.

Certified TAA "hater" here, love you Dan! Just needed to say TAA haters don't want TAA abolished nor do they care if others like it, they just want an off option in every game. That's why TAA haters only complain about games when its forced on them and not games like this. I have to point this out because the way you worded your statement sounded like you disliked those people and maybe that's because you got the impression they want to take away this option from you or force you to prefer no TAA, but we don't (I definitely don't).
Also note I personally dislike TAA because I have a motion sickness disability and 97% of TAA implementations cause me to feel ill, making a large percentage of games inaccessible to me. As a gamer this is depressing to me, and since were PC players and not console users being able to tweak our settings should always be allowed, especially when it can be an accessibility feature like in this case. I sincerely hope this comment finds you well Dan. Best of luck!

Maybe. Prices will probably come down more again relatively soon. The RTX 4070 has been trending downward in price, with the cheapest sales going as low as around 520 or 530 so far, and the RX 7800 XT should potentially go lower than 500, but (in both cases) the quality of the exact model you're looking at should also be taken into consideration. Personally, I'm not a big fan of a lot of the cheapest models, but Sapphire seems to be a fairly safe bet even when it comes to their cheaper models.
Of course, these are already two of the best cards, so these two may not drop as much in price as some of the other ones out there. The 4070 ti Super and 4070 Super should help to push prices for current AMD and Nvidia cards down further, and some of those prices could go lower before any of the super models are released.

I think FSR2 is just bad for iGPUs overall. Even at 1080p the cost is very high. Normally you'd more than double your performance at 50% resolution scale, and that's not what we see here.
I'd rather just use spatial upscaling. The best way would actually be integer scaling, games using TAA look really good with that, but I don't know if AMD supports it.

All he really does is check emails, write up documents and browse the internet - so a Mini PC is the perfect solution for him, especially with his desk space being so limited. Really unless you game, edit videos or are involved in 3D work of any kind you don't really _need_ a discreet GPU - especially not the latest expensive models. Be very interesting to see the 690S with 32GB (at least) of 5600 and maybe 6000MT memory put up against the XTX to see how it does. Please?
