      I stand 100% behind the video we did yesterday. It was a hell of a lot of work and I believe it's an excellent representation of the performance we can expect from a hotly-anticipated new product. There was a lot of asshurt over the inappropriate title that unfortunately hurt an EXCELLENT piece of content. Try not to judge it based on the title.

    • @DanielRichards644
      @DanielRichards644 7 років тому +486

      the VIDEO was NOT the Problem, the video is perfectly fine for what ti shows, the problem is the TITLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Saying Previewed or Tested Implies you have your hands on the actual chips, it NEEDS to say SIMULATED, FIX THE TITLE and people will STOP being so pissed off.

    • @LinusTechTips
      @LinusTechTips  7 років тому +557

      +DanielRichards644 there is absolutely nothing wrong with "preview". Look it up in the dictionary. And a lot of the upset seems to be from people who didn't watch or didn't listen to the methodology.
      Either way we are all lookin forward to comparing our preview numbers to the real numbers to see how close they are. Should be fun :D

    • @imreloadin
      @imreloadin 7 років тому +312

      I agree that it was a good video, however the fact remains that the title was incredibly misleading and as a result a lot of people felt baited. Whether this was intentional or not remains to be decided as you and your team have stated repeatedly that you'll do what gets you views, so the jury is still out on if it was an unintentional oversight or a deliberate attempt to bring in the views. We've seen this channel take a turn down gimmicky clickbait alley and so the title of yesterdays video was seen as the next logical step down that road.
      In the end it comes down to this. We as the viewers hold a great deal of trust in you and your channel. A lot of us have been here since you were with NCIX and we have seen you develop your company before our very eyes and we honestly do want you to keep doing that, but not at the expense of you or your channel's integrity. We come to you because we want to see your companies innovation and ingenuity in times where others are jumping on the clickbait money train, not to see you guys jump on board too...

    I just hope AMD bucks the trend of 'Finewine' with RX Vega. Let's be honest Raja said he doesn't like the term and rightly so, because it implies you don't get maximum performance on day 1 and have to wait until a year or two to achieve it's full potential. Traditionally AMD GPU's have always packed more horsepower under the hood than their equivalent Nvidia counterparts, thus they should theoretically be getting more fps than Nvidia when it's not the case. Imagine if the rx 480 was as fast as it is now after several software upgrades, upon release. It would be out and out faster than GTX 1060 and many more people would buy it.
    Come to think of it, maybe that's why Vega is arriving late. They've been spending months optimizing the architecture to extract the best performance on day 1 like Nvidia and unlike the inefficient GCN. Could be good news for AMD fans if true.

    Great video. Fun fact - in 2009, I resurrected an ancient gaming PC with an AMD64 3400+ from 2003 and 2GB of RAM. I replaced the nVidia fx5900 with an AMD 3750, which was apparently the best AGP card you could buy at the time. Although the processor was a bottleneck, it actually played most games quite well and got me back into PC gaming. In 2010 I rebuilt a machine from scratch with a 4870 which I kept for 7 years before going for a GTX1060.

    Back in December, I had upgraded to a Five Ninety series Hewlett~Packard Pavilion, Model p0057c: This model comes with an RX Lexa Graphics Card, and while it only has 02 GB of VRAM, having an Intel Core i05~8400 or i07~8700 truly helps this GPU shine, and its low cost and wattage definitely has made it an ideal GPU to have on a budget, especially if you're purchasing hardware from Micro Center.
    Ideally, if you want a decent grade yet affordable Graphics Card from AMD that has a high amount of VRAM and won't take up so much of your Power Supply limit (if you're on a 2000$ USD Gaming or All~Around budget), the best one for its money (at the time of this post) is the Radeon Pro WX 7100, in my view: While a Workstation Graphics Card that is still priced at Workstation levels (about half a thousand dollars, on average), this Ellesmere card from a little over two years ago comes with 08 GB of VRAM and is right in the middle of the GCN 04.00~based RX Polaris cards in terms of overall speed and performance, only fifteen watts more in TDP than the RX 0570; the WX 7100 has also been proven to be useful in Benchmark Testing for games against its closest RX counterparts, and comes with some optimizations for certain applications that may require a WX to use, it gets the job done without forcing you to up your Power Supply to ridiculously high wattage limits and you could last on this for at least the next decade, definitely optimal to use with the 8700K or 8086K if you have a rig with either or. (:

      I use a 1920x1080 monitor and another 1280x1024 monitor. It runs on Fedora 24. I mostly use it for reddit and youtube, and it runs 1080p60 videos smoothly.
      The benchmarks on here don't seem true. It says 38FPS for half life 2, but I just tried it now and on max settings and I'm getting 60FPS completely fine. It's playing this video in 1080p without any frame drops.
      I remember a few years ago playing portal 2 when it came out on this exact same card on medium settings perfectly fine, probably 50fps, but this was 2011 and I don't remember that well.

    Power consumption for the RX 480 must be wrong...
    HD 7970 -> 225w with 250w TDP.
    RX 480 -> 307w with 150w TDP.
    Switched results?

    • @juancereda5952
      @juancereda5952 7 років тому +6

      It's manufacturer information. 7970 has 250w tdp and 480 150w tdp.
      And 7970 has 6+8 pin connectors (8+8 in custom models) while 480 has only one 6pin connector (8 in custom model).

    • @csjdruid434
      @csjdruid434 7 років тому

      what is tdp? I thought it was the amount of power the gpu needed why is it more than what is recommended?

    • @juancereda5952
      @juancereda5952 7 років тому +5

      TDP is "thermal design power", its how much energy takes to disipate a microchip. Isnt really the consumption of the card, but is a estimation very close to it. This is helpfull to buy the correct cooler.
      Now, those graphics always (or almost always) shows the total system consumption, because its more easy than measure only the gpu. So they are showing all system consumption (cpu+gpu+ram+motherboard+HDD).

    • @csjdruid434
      @csjdruid434 7 років тому

      Juani Cere Oh I get it so they don't include the thermal energy created by the mosfets, capacitors, and ram on the pcb? Tdp is just the core?

      1080ti

    • @lui4637
      @lui4637 7 років тому +19

      What kind of company releases a high end GPU (1080) and within several months later turkey slaps their consumer's face by releasing the 1080ti with the same price as the 1080 with 30%-35% performance increase.
      They've also forgot the fact that a 1060 even existed and completely focused on the 1070-1080ti, forgetting that not all of their consumers are hardcore people trying to 4K game at 60fps average

    • @lui4637
      @lui4637 7 років тому +8

      Meanwhile AMD are focusing on the 1080p players, slowly balancing the worthiness of their products (driver updates and etc). They're playing with the market very wisely. With the Ryzen CPU's mostly focusing on 1080p while being dirt cheap you could almost say that AMD are being too generous. With Vega coming I won't be surprised if people are gonna switch to the red team.
      Obviously the Vega won't be on par with the 1080ti (I could be wrong but I'm no fortune teller). But it'll obviously be the bang of the buck. I can see the Vega being priced at around $400+/-ish while offering 4K. With future games switching to DX12 and Vulkan, and the Ryzen's core being more optimized and used rather than focusing on single core.

      Basically a TL;DR
      Stick with Nvidia if you want the front row seat asap
      Stick with AMD if you're a patient person and willing to watch your products slowly mature

      I would go for RX 480. it plays nice with the new APIs. I have 1080 sli. the driver does weird things to my
      windows 10. I'm very disappointed with nvidia's drivers, went from 3 x r9 290 to 1080 sli for a change. I was hoping for better drivers like everyone said but most of the time it does weird things and fucked up Windows 10 start menu. Temperature is about the same but I only use Kraken + Corsair 120mm AIO cooler. just updated to nvidia new driver yesterday, hopefully the weird shits are gone.

    • @MrRicearonie
      @MrRicearonie 7 років тому +1

      Jyrka98 While that is correct, and Nintendo did use Radeon Graphics for the GameCube, Wii, and Wii U, the time frame only makes it possible for the Wii U to use the architecture. If Linus is referring to the Wii U, which I doubt, then maybe, but the Wii U was not in the image they showed in the video

    • @budthecyborg4575
      @budthecyborg4575 7 років тому +1

      I guarantee Linus was talking about the Wii U.
      There was probably just a mix-up in what image they used to reference the subject.

    • @Montisaquadeis
      @Montisaquadeis 7 років тому

      Also the switch replaces the Wii U as well. AKA the Switch is nintendos newest console/portable hybred and will likely be replacing the 3DS as well down the line. So Linus was still wrong when he said that current consoles from the 3 companies all use AMD Chips as Nintendo has pretty much killed the Wii U and the Switch is their current system which uses Nvidia Tegra.

It's sad I never got the 7850 to work on it as support for non GCN GPUs is almost non-existent outside of the Linux Radeon drivers. Nah. We're already reaching the limits of substantial performance gains with each new generation, and real time graphics aren't progressing *that* much. We've already achieved some truly ground breaking shit in real time graphics already, and it's mostly consoles that'd holding us down. So 10 years from now I know for a fact that graphics won't make that much of a leap, so instead games will push resolution as the new hot thing.
      I'm calling it now, 10 years from now the 1080ti will still be able to run games comfortably at 1080p. New graphics cards will focus on running games at 4k.
