1.Blue Oyster Cult "Godzilla" 2. .38 Special "Hold On Loosely" 3.Toto "Hold The Line" 4. Aerosmith "Living On The Edge" 5. Motley Crue "Dr Feelgood". I just won the cheapest guitar in Norman's for my 100th song posting!!...I'm being deceptive...?
Neck Pickup: Godzilla - Blue Öyster Cult Neck/Middle Pickup: Hold On Loosely - .38 Special Middle Pickup: Hold the Line - Toto Middle/Bridge Pickup: Livin' On The Edge - Aerosmith Bridge Pickup: Dr. Feelgood - Mötley Crüe
I was a wee bit confused at first when Mark said it was a 1980 The Strat because the early ones didn’t have the Gold tuners or switch tip and then we had a close up of the serial number G030118 (82-83) that made sense the gold tuners appeared in 82. I have one a 1980 version same colour great guitar heavy but some fantastic extra tonal options as a result of the rotary switch. One thing I noticed is that this guitars body contours are a lot more pronounced than mine oh yes it’s brass hardware but it’s plated in gold.
I bought one of these new when they came out, lake placid blue with maple fretboard for $600. It was pretty heavy, and the fingerboard was finished with a thick coat of polyurethane, I believe. It seemed like they sprayed right over the frets, and it fought back when you would bend the strings especially on those hot, humid outdoor shows. I most often used the neck & bridge "Tele" sound, but it had some cool beefy in-series sounds too. The whole guitar felt like it was encapsulated in plastic.
Hell yeah! Funnily enough, I was listening to Bridge of Sighs last night (very loud, trying to drown out the fireworks so my dogs didn't get stressed).
old guy that parks backwards I think Gibson made Les Pauls, 335s, and SGs out of walnut. They were called the firebrand series. Killer guitars. All of the ones I've seen had ebony fretboards, too.
My first attempt at playing guitar was 1984 when my crappy guitar teacher from the music store down the street convinced me to buy a cracked neck acoustic when he has this EXACT guitar!!! Great/bad memories ... nice!
My birthday is on the 26th of November, can you please do some blues, like buddy guy, Albert king or muddy waters? It would be cool on a poopy brown tele deluxe or any CBS strat
Fender jazz 62 i mainly build my instruments because I play lefty. I know a lot about the specs of CBS guitars. But two things that I'm slightly confused about is the finish and the neck profile. I know that at some point in 68 they switched to lacquer over a polyester sealer. Then just switched to all polyester (besides the headstock). I've seen some guitars in 69 and throughout the 70s that have lacquer over a clear polyester. Someone took acetone to his sunburst 74 strat and it left a satin clear undercoat which makes me think fender did lacquer on most sunbursts. I've seen many mocha finishes that look like they have lacquer wear. Do you know any information on the finishes? Fornecks, I've heard they started doing the u neck again in 68 and around 73-74, they switched to a medium c. Is that true? I asked fender about all this and they weren't sure about the finish. Many people say fender only used poly after 68, but I don't think that is true. I want to ask someone that's been alive during that time and owns vintage fenders.
TupolevPilot To answer your first question, yea I still talked all the time. Don't get me wrong, I loved my mom very much. She just wasn't ready to have any kids. She had me when she was in high school at 17 years old. We were more friends than mom and son. That changed in later years though when she learned how to be a mom. Now the colors and finish thing on fenders I don't know much about. I just bought a big book by Tom Wheeler, the editor of guitar player mag. It came out last year and is excellent. It's called the Fender Archives and is totally Fender. It will help you.
It's so weird to see this Strat since I remember owning one of these in walnut back in the 80's. I remember it being heavier than it needed to be, traded it for one of the first '57 Buddy burst! As usual, Mark picked some great tunes for the tones illustrated!
This is later than 1980. Note that it features the revised headstock and “Fullerton” contours that didn’t appear until early 1982. Before that they had the “odd” small headstock shape and shallow contours. This example will be from 1982 or early 1983.
Rock Hard Riffs Not sure about it being a last gasp, because let's not forget CBS was still in charge when the Vintage Reissues were released just a couple years later in 1982. IMO, The Strat was a flawed attempt, but still an important try, in returning at least a little bit of the old glory.
I like the " strat " from the late 80s that at least tried to compete with the high tech metal guitars or supah strats lol. I never saw one in person, always online
You guys should try doing a video of mark and jens top 5 guitars from guitar of the day. It would give people a second look at some of the good stuff still in stock and your personal perspectives.
Had the exact guitar candy apple painted headstock...one thing Mark didn’t point out was that the bridge pickup was called the x1 pickup which was a hotter pickup which fender advertised.i remember the guitar sounded great...The amp has a lot to do with it too......this guitar could rock ...I had a 50 watt Marshall plexi in 1980 so maybe that’s why it sounded great
Is that definitely a 1980? The first couple of years had the incorrect headstock shape (as seen on the Fender "Lead" series - pretty far off from the Pre-CBS silhouette), and they didn't get it correct (as on this one) until closer to '83. The early ones (almost?) always had non-matching chrome tuners (when everything else was gold/brass), due to -I'd guess- a supply problem.
Despite some of the scoffs The Strat is getting here, as someone who was an active player/buyer and vintage enthusiast back then The Strat was an important guitar because of the classic pre-CBS colors and smaller (though flawed) headstock. This was a couple years before the earliest batch of Vintage Reissue series Teles, Stratocasters and basses started to trickle out. Vintage fever was starting to pick up more and more steam and players had it up to their nostrils with the CBS-era stuff. Remember, in 1980 there was no Internet, there were no multiple, multiple books of Fender history detailing every screw hole. ANYTHING that harkened back to the old pre-CBS ways was viewed as a big bright spot, and The Strat was at least a move in the right direction, as was the Anniversary model of 1979. That's just the way it was.
Today is's my birthday, I love this guitar, It's a fantastic strat, how much is the price and shipping to Spain, a lot but thank you very much.......I love Norman rare guitar
No. Is A POOR DEMOSTRATION. Have missed of mentioning the X-1 pick-up on the bridge, and others 4 selections of pick-up, rotating the other selector on bottom. Sorry for my bad English, i am italian.
I'm flying in mid November, I am going to ask Mark if I can be in the background trying hard not to be noticed, Normans was my local guitar shop before I moved a few years ago
Hey Mark and Jen! My birthday is in the 10th and I would love to hear you tickle some Bossa Nova on a flattop next Friday! Greetings from Brazil, my friend!
Sure would've liked to have heard those "bonus tones" from a pretty sweet Strat. Next straturday, Dan Smith era strat would be great. Or maybe a.... Goya Rangemaster
fuck yea. I owned a Goya Rangemaster back 12 or 13 years ago. Odd, but great guitar overall. Got stolen. All those Italian/Swedish made stuff from the 70s are slick pieces. Have owned an Eko as well.
I worked in a music shop from ‘79 to around ‘86 and I remember getting The Strat in Candy Apple Red and Lake Placid Blue. We couldn’t give them away. They weighed a ton and the brass parts were popular at this time but way over the top on this model. An attempt by Fender to get back to some of their past glory but mostly a miss at the time. YMMV.
mwrable I was a "Strat" buyer in that era and although I don't recall them hanging around too long, i certainly agree with your assessment about them being a shot at past glory. Still, very important model for that reason. Vintage fever in 1980 was starting to heat up. The Vintage Reissue series came out shortly thereafter.
I recently got a red one somewhat used. Bought a blue for about double the price I paid for the red one. However, the blue one is still blue. Most of them you see nowadays are green due to sunlight fading the blue out. Mine was an "underthebedder" model.
Love your show. I keep hearing about the early Peavey T-60, 1978/79... People say they are a very fine quality USA made guitars at a very low cost. What do you say? You got one to review?
You've just proven that brass parts change the tonal sound of a guitar. This doesn't sound like a hollow sparkle stratocaster from the 80s. Sounds hot and nasty...love it! Nobody bought them cause they were different and expensive.
Andy Rhodes Nice. Real beauties. I sold my LPB The Strat for one of the earliest '57 reissues and then saw The Strat in walnut like yours. I wanted to sell again! Glad you still have yours.
I feel like whenever he turns around to walk to the guitar he's about to unearth some secret government secret
GalxyCoffee I know right
I've lusted after one of these since I was a wee lad.

Yes, it may be brass, but it's plated with 100 micron thick gold. That's H E A V Y plating.
Mark and Jen - watch you guys every day. Thanks for what you do!

Very beautiful strat. The brass hardware looks awesome with the candy red.
That things fucking sick

How about some Mike Oldfield?
Hell yeah! Funnily enough, I was listening to Bridge of Sighs last night (very loud, trying to drown out the fireworks so my dogs didn't get stressed).
Very bright and blingy! Have a good one Mark and Jen.
Byeeeeee!!
The Brassocaster.. the rotary switch is interesting. Walnut, .. wow!
Jennifer WhiteWolf Gibson made an SG out of walnut called "the SG" in 79.
old guy that parks backwards I think Gibson made Les Pauls, 335s, and SGs out of walnut. They were called the firebrand series. Killer guitars. All of the ones I've seen had ebony fretboards, too.
That guitar though. My word that is SUCH a pretty guitar!!

What a lineup of songs.... goddamn

same as my bday and great tunes
TupolevPilot Congratulations , my friend , you made it to 17. The year I left my mom's house in 1971
Hope you have many, many, more.
Fender jazz 62 damn did you still talk to your mom after you left?
Fender jazz 62 i mainly build my instruments because I play lefty. I know a lot about the specs of CBS guitars. But two things that I'm slightly confused about is the finish and the neck profile. Cars guitars what ever i love candy apple red and i would buy that guitar nice job Mark thanks !
MAN YOU CHOPPED AND SHREDDED THAT THING ,,, WOW THAT GUITAR WAS MADE FOR YOU DON'T YOU THINK!??? WOW ,,
It's so weird to see this Strat since I remember owning one of these in walnut back in the 80's. I remember it being heavier than it needed to be, traded it for one of the first '57 Buddy burst!

In early 1980 John Lennon was on the cover of Rolling Stone with one of these red "Strats". Unfortunately Yoko was too.
Yes, there are a couple of shots of John playing one in bed. Three days before he was murdered.
BOC !!! YES . Been waiting ages for you to play a track by them
I always assumed 'the strat' was a bit of a last gasp gimmick. That thing sounds bad ass in truth. Great playing never hurt.
Rock Hard Riffs Not sure about it being a last gasp, because let's not forget CBS was still in charge when the Vintage Reissues were released just a couple years later in 1982. IMO, The Strat was a flawed attempt, but still an important try, in returning at least a little bit of the old glory.
I think it has a lot of personality its not a sweet sounding Fender guitar but it has some girth tone to it
I like the " strat " from the late 80s that at least tried to compete with the high tech metal guitars or supah strats lol. I never saw one in person, always online
It's a great guitar. Have been playing one since '83. Have had all the OTHERS Les Paul, PRS, Teles (which I also love) but ALWAYS go back to my STRAT.
START ON 6:48
Welcome
i was expecting steven tyler to appear from behind the sofa...mike stand with scarves....we living on the edge...!
Hey Jen 😁 Nice playing Mark sweet guitar
Nice... Good Songs Mark
Finally a guitar from the year I was born
WOW that strat is a powerhouse! And Mark, your playing was, as the youngsters say these days, ON FLEEK!!!!!!
GORGEOUS!
Nine pick-up options nine songs. Rock on!!!
You guys should try doing a video of mark and jens top 5 guitars from guitar of the day. It would give people a second look at some of the good stuff still in stock and your personal perspectives.
hot X-1 bridge pickup too.
I've never heard a decent demo on one of those. I need to own one now!
Right!!!
Could you already find one?
Hell yea loving me some Motley Crue! Never knew there was a version known as “The Strat”. Thanks for sharing.
If I’m not mistaken the trem was made by Kahler who made brass hardware before they started making their cam based trems.
What a piece of strat....
Mark tell Norm to send you on tour first stop Muscle Shoals Alabama, oh don't forget to bring Jen.
great job beautiful guitar.
Looks sooo good
Had the exact guitar candy apple painted headstock...one thing Mark didn’t point out was that the bridge pickup was called the x1 pickup which was a hotter pickup which fender advertised.i remember the guitar sounded great...The amp has a lot to do with it too......this guitar could rock ...I had a 50 watt Marshall plexi in 1980 so maybe that’s why it sounded great
Glenn Evans 50W plexi, bitchin 🎸🤘🏻
Glenn Evans Yes, Mark missed mentioning the X-1 lead pickup. He is very thorough on all his details on GOTD, so I'm surprised that one got past him.
Mark IS NOT A GOOD DEMONSTRATOR.
That's an amazing riff! Love to Dr. Feelgood! I know it's on my "get hyped-mix"
I need more SGs
I have one of these and they are GREAT. About as heavy as a 70s Les Paul Custom. A very Strat, but hot sound. Love mine.
Sounds fantastic
I don’t like neither red guitars nor brass hardware, but together, on a Strat... man, it’s freaking gorgeous!
Best show ever!
Is that definitely a 1980? YouAmperex totally agree. Mine is a 1980 and has chrome pegs and smaller than 50’s headstock
Gotta birthday coming up on Nov 19th, since it falls on a Sunday on one of the next two Straturdays will you do some Sultans of Swing?
Despite some of the scoffs The Strat is getting here, as someone who was an active player/buyer and vintage enthusiast back then The Strat was an important guitar because of the classic pre-CBS colors and smaller (though flawed) headstock. I heard Joe Bonamassa was in Norm's today buying some pedals.
billgelder he used to have a good sized board with his signature fuzz face and wah
billgelder he is an idiot
I heard he got an EHX B9
Today is's my birthday, I love this guitar, It's a fantastic strat, how much is the price and shipping to Spain, a lot but thank you very much.......I love Norman rare guitar
Happy Birthday! :D
Do a Dean ML for DIME
One of Mark's best videos and one of the coolest sounding and looking guitars ever...
No. Is A POOR DEMOSTRATION. Have missed of mentioning the X-1 pick-up on the bridge, and others 4 selections of pick-up, rotating the other selector on bottom.
Sorry for my bad English, i am italian.
I'm going for a similar look on my squier stratocaster, I have a black pickguard and pickup, just need to get a new bridge tuners and jack plate
My dad had one of these in Cherry.
I assume the tone affects bridge too?
Nice raw sound...cool Strat.
I have one which I bought in 1981 2nd hand but in maple fretboard, it is quite heavy, I think it is walnut wood, sound is amazing!
massif ash !!
I have a 1982 Stratocaster painted in Blue Stratoburst. How rare is it?
FUCK YEAH
Love these guitars
I'm flying in mid November, I am going to ask Mark if I can be in the background trying hard not to be noticed, Normans was my local guitar shop before I moved a few years ago
Yes!!! Dr.Feelgood!!!! Finally another song I know and love lol
It's my birthday Sunday the 5th, how about that oxblood Gibson Flying V Mark? Please? I've seen every single GOTD!
Man that thing sounds sweet
i dont get the " im tired of showing all this fine guitars" actitude...
Would really be nice to have the demo w/OUT amp effects.
I remember these!!!!
I thought the headstocks on these were those really goofy misshaped headstocks, but this one looks the correct shape ?
That matching color headstock looks sexier than my crush and my Jackson Kelly, OMG!!!
Hey Mark and Jen! My birthday is in the 10th and I would love to hear you tickle some Bossa Nova on a flattop next Friday!
Greetings from Brazil, my friend!
Looks awesome...
Would make an excellent studio as well as a touring guitar. Great video btw perhaps a camera upgrade for the new year...
Would love to see a Fender Bullet (Tele style) from the 80s!
I’m looking for a 12 string acoustic electric why don’t u show one.?
I want it!!! And a 1982 strat.

I remember the ad for this, Godzilla was a Monster, 38 Special was rad, where is Bold as Love?
Man I wish I didn’t get rid of the original electronics .still have the red guitar mine has a maple neck and yay its heavy
What’s up with the quilted jacket...?
What year was the guitar that had Strat written big across the headstock?
Does Jen play? I'd like to see her in a guitar of the day.
You've just proven that brass parts change the tonal sound of a guitar. This doesn't sound like a hollow sparkle stratocaster from the 80s. Sounds hot and nasty...love it! Nobody bought them cause they were different and expensive.
There's nine positions. Come back and do the other four on Sunday!
Mark is one stupid. Not have demonstrated other pick-ups combinations, typical of The Strat, AND, MOST IMPORTANT, WITH CLEAN SOUND!!!
Sorry for my bad English...
I am Italian.
Sweet guitar
What about 12 string acoustic electrics???
So Sick!!! I love Straturday!!! Do you still have the hard tail from last week???!! Man, I want that thing!!!
Not an 80s guy but that's still badass
I have the Walnut Strat. You're right, it's heavy, but sounds awesome!
Andy Rhodes Nice. Real beauties. I sold my LPB The Strat for one of the earliest '57 reissues and then saw The Strat in walnut like yours. I wanted to sell again! Glad you still have yours.
I remember the days when only one Strat was sold. That is kind of good but better now with all the options.
Very purty ... gotta love a custom color Strat
I'm pretty sure I saw a black one with humbuckers in Willmington or something
