  • This is my vintage Hoover Powermax Supreme upright vacuum (from 1992), model U3729-910, that I bought locally from another local vacuum collector after always wanting an older model Powermax. I do have another Powermax ( • Hoover PowerMax Suprem... ), and this one is another great piece and is a good example of an early Powermax, though this example may need a little bit more parts thrown at it to make it perfect. For someone who has been exposed to many Hoover Elite Uprights, I've really loved the Concept series since their architecture is basically the same as the Elite. The Concept series was made back in the late 70s as the top of the line in the Hoover lineup and replaced the Dial-a-Matic series, and the Powermax was the latest model as a successor to the Concept Two and introduced on board tools compared to the help mate that was mounted on front of the Concept Two. It features a 7.4 amp motor with direct air design and takes Hoover Type A bags (this example is running the Hepa bags that are hard to find these days but worth it in the filtration and surely increases performance). The suction is average, the airflow is amazing, the tool airflow is not good (it's honestly worse than any Elite I've owned), the agitation (even for only having a 2 brush "Duo-Flex brush roll") is great for a machine that's as old as this is, being that it has it's original brushroll. My only complaints about this machine is that this is stupidly loud when in use (I think even my loudest Elite seems more quiet than this), and you can't find parts for these machines anymore since Hoover discontinued most of the parts (thanks a lot TTI!). Overall, I absolutely love this vacuum and is certainly better than anything Hoover makes today.

My mom once had a brown and white concept one the model U3103 with the wrap around cord set up which uses a front converter to use the attachments with. I do have the same power max model which it’s hard to get rid of probably

Very nice mid range powermax. I really want the U3745-910 PowerMax 960 with Variable speed control

The red on this Power Max is pretty sick looking if you ask me. This is definitely a nice upgrade from both the concept 1 and 2, but I never understood why Hoover never decided to change the needle bearing with a ball bearing. I feel like needle bearings don’t really spin all that fast, which is probably why not only these have so much vibration, but also why it doesn’t have that much tool suction compared to the power drive with the upgraded ball bearing. I remember reading a forum post on vacuum land that said Hoover kept trying to upgrade the amperage of the Power Max, but it just got so damn loud. It kind of sucks that the high end black model wasn’t made for too long. I wonder if that model could possibly have a 7.6 amp motor compared to the green model with 7.5 amps. I did find a website that has brand new parts for these Power Max models. The website has that well known tool valve that always breaks on theses. I don’t know if that company is still in business, or if it even is a real website that actually sells you anything. I could give you the name of the website if you really want to fix this thing for good. I would ask them to send you a picture of the parts to see if they really are legit.

I believe the reason why Hoover upgraded their motors (particularly in the Elite) to a ball bearing mostly since it quieted down the noise of the motor, which is honestly one of the contributing factors to why the Concept machines are super loud. I honestly have no idea why Hoover used a needle bearing to begin with.

This machine here sounds like my grandparents 1989 Rainbow D4C. Needed new fans, spider, motor bearings, PN bearings, new brushroll. Poor machine was wore totally out.

That's just how the Concept machines naturally sound. And it's all due to the needle bearing on the back side of the motor by the belt shaft.

This thing sounds a lot like a Conquest machine.

I think the PowerMax line were the last good Hoover uprights in my opinion. I'm not a huge fan of Elites myself and I never really was into Windtunnels.

Agreed, although I'm still an Elite fan, I do admit the Concepts were better in terms of build quality and overall cleaning performance. I'm not huge on Windtunnels either, but I have a few, and they're just powerhouses in terms of airflow, especially for a bypass upright with a single stage motor.
