Probably one of the most helpful videos in golf. Staying connected is a major key to developing consistency and confidence.
This is an under emphasisized fundamental for so many of us.
Chris, maybe a video on connection in the downswing and through impact please 🙂
Thanks Chris! Keep up the awesome instructional videos, best on The Tube.
brilliant drill. Have been losing the basics in my swing for some time now. This fixed it immediately. Thanks heaps
Another fantastic video. Thank you Chris. Have a happy Christmas.
Extremely helpful. Game changer!!! Thank you
My accuracy has greatly improved thanks to this
Gut und verständliches Video. Danke
Love your videos Chris!!! Have a safe and Merry Christmas.
hi Chris please keep the videos coming..best online instruction by a distance..
Merry Christmas Cris and cheers from sunny Madrid !! My teacher told me the same to avoid starting strait or even worst outside at backswing which ends in disasters like slice or shank. Keep going with the best golf teaching content in the web ;)) Gonzalo
Have a good Christmas Chris...thanks for all the good content, looking forward to lowering my handicap next year lol
Very helpful will try it on the range tomorrow thank you
Excellent video,thanks bro.
Excellent drill for learning how to swing the club on the proper path and plane.
Makes a lot of sense...thanks Chris
Great vid!
Great drill will be a great help.
Merry Christmas Chris from Canada. Just got a new fairway hybrid and will be using it in my garage driving range even though it has not snowed yet and there are golf courses that were still open as until very recently. I will be trying this as I see a tendency I was doing wrong.
great advice, trying this asap!
did it work?
Just had a lesson yesterday here in the US and my coach was saying the same thing, using different analogies, but had the same message!
great vid , something to work on thanks sir
It was an awesome drill
Merry Christmas!!
Merry Christmas Chris, have yourself a most awesome 2016 :)
Yes Chris, I believe staying connected is the single most important move in the golf swing. You must stay connected!
M B Cheers for the Video! Forgive me for chiming in, I am interested in your initial thoughts. Have you considered - Paneevelyn Swinging Clubsman (just google it)? It is a good one of a kind guide for revealing an effortless golf swing technique minus the hard work. Ive heard some pretty good things about it and my cousin got astronomical results with it.
merry Christmas Chris.
see you soon for a lesson
This video was huge for me, made me realise I was trying to push my hands out to the target causing my lead arm to detach and not make good contact.
Happy Xmas Chris
Thanks Chris. I like the way you go about it, omitting jargon and too much tech. I did want to ask you what you think of the Fred Couples type of release. That's what I learnt when I was young--turn the body left and fire the arms and hands straight down the line. Do you think it would be worthwhile to ry and work on what you're suggesting here?
I do basically the same takeaway but focus on keeping the clubhead between my hands jutting out from the triangle and keep that position throughout the back swing. To do this the back of my arms are more on TOP of the pecs (Ben Hogan pic) than on the side that your video seems to suggest. If my arms are to the side of the pecs then It is hard to keep the gloves from falling out. With the arms on top of the pecs I can maintain the triangle and the club-head between it. I feel that I can return the club to the ball without any adjustments and I am not even conscious of the gloves. However, I start with my back to the target using the Justin Rose practice swing thought and concentrate on having the "left arm straight at impact." The ball goes pretty straight. I will top it sometimes. The only thing is I rarely get to a full finish.
Actually been working on this for about a month...all turn now andy swing feels connected...one piece. Consistent baby draw...3 foot draw for like an 8 iron...maybe 6 to 7 yards with driver...or I can hit a big floating fade...5 yard fade with every club in the bag..when I go after it everything is dead nuts straight. Pitching game is good now that I stay connected early..40 to 70 yard shot used to be scary...now it's fun. Low bump shots are fun now...little super low 135 yard 8 iron..full ahot with the 8 is a hair over 160...162 or so. This is all with a connected, controlled swing. Round.
best drill ever
It goes much better/balls more straight
Thank you
I guess that I swing my arms without adequate body movement. This drill should help that. It is a good video for the most important part of the swing, impact.
Is the towel drill underneath both arms any better for connection? Can you do this in the full swing? Great video! Thanks, Chris!
Thanks for this video. I tend to get away from the connection because I feel I can get more power with the arms. Then I lose all control.
True power will come from the lower body and moving through the ball with good tempo. Hence, Rory doesn't get close to parallel anymore, but still hits it just as far. The reason why is because he stays connected and uses his lowerbody to initiate the downswing back through the ball.
Should you keep that connection on the left arm and chest during full swing? And will this keep your chest moving during swing?
Very good drill to start the backswing but reaching the top you have to disconnect somehow to complete the backswing. How do you reconnect after that in the dowswing before impact?
hard to explain , but one of the issues with this drill for me is that it made my tendency to externally rotate my right shoulder to get the club back a bit worse. I tended to find that by maintaining the angle between the line down my right arm and a line across my chest (about 90 degrees or a bit less at address) then having the feel of swinging outside on the backswing away from ball actually helped maintain that angle. It's all feel, though, because me thinking I am swinging outside is actually not.. I was just used to opening that right shoulder to get the club back without turning the shoulders enough.
Ryan, Do you feel that your hips in this little downswing, are pulling the shoulders and the arms in this order of séquence? Thank's!
Hello Chris, thank you for the video. I was wondering if the connection between the arms and the ribcage is maintained in the backswing all the way up to the top of the backswing. Or do the arms and the ribcage (ideally) become separated at some point?
Steve Johnson do this all the way up - as far as you can turn. For amateurs like us, separation is where the problem occurs mate. We tend to raise our arms rather than complete a full turn and that's when the inconsistent swings set in.
Thanks Chris a great drill to fix my chicken wing
At what point does your left arm disconnect? That is, when is it OK for the glove under your left armpit to FALL? I'm staying connected for so long I'm now hooking the ball. Help!
So on downswing when I turn my hips before my upper should my arms and chest stay connected?
I have always had the impression keep the arms passive or “behind “ during the downswing
Thanks
The arms and hands should be passive and you MUST stay connected at all times.
Slack in the chain is a no no. Like Bobby Jones said " it would be like pulling a car with slack in the rope".
I like to say it would be like pulling a car with a bungy chord.
Do I stay 'connected' with a full backswing and follow through? So both gloves should never drop out in a full swing? Thanks Chris.
They should drop out after follow through, not that I’m any good at golf
Working on this drill at the moment, for a full swing should the glove fall out as you reach top of the swing or should it still be connected.?
From what I have seen, you stay connected until about the point in the backswing he is showing here. As you keep rotating to make a full turn, your right triceps becomes disconnected. You start the downswing by reconnecting it FIRST. This will slightly shallow the swing plane to compensate for the slight lean forward that you naturally do when you start the downswing. If you watch the pros, these two motions will counteract each other such that the swing plane doesn't really change. Hope that makes sense.
Hi Chris, I was working on this today before I saw this video. I felt my right elbow staying connected all the way to the top as I made a conscious effort to turn my shoulders. If the elbow strayed from my side I lost control of the connection and didnt feel like I could just turn back through with consistency. I realize the elbow does come away about a first width from my ribs. My left arm stays on the same plain as my shoulders and my hands are deeper at the top. As long as I turn the shoulders first the hips follow vs turning the shoulders and hips together. That just brings the club and left arm around too flat. I also feel like I can keep the club head outside my hands going back vs getting lazy and with the wrists...Any advice you can give me? I really struggle with my swing and consistancy but today felt great.
Does this same application apply to the driver?
it applies to your irons as well as your driver. Staying connected is what allows the energy from your rotating body (the engine of the golf swing ) to be transferred to the arms/hands/club . It's proper energy transfer through kinematic sequencing and any slack in the chain causes a huge loss of energy transfer.
Ok. 1/2 way explained. Now I only need 2nd half of the backswing explained.
B2B Bogey the second half is keep turning the body as much as is comfortable and don’t make up for a lack of turn by using your arms instead
pedromcdodge Good to hear. I sort of knew but I needed some to confirm and tell thats happening. Thx!
Hardness=Golfness
Take it from me, this removes all of the mystery out of the enigma that is the golf swing. I would go so far as to say if you are not working on this, you are waisting your time and energy.
yes. worst swing thought in golf: straight back ...noooo.... the clubs gotta TURN w your shoulders...
