At 80 years old, I have had many tips on how to chip, from friends, golf instructors etc. However with all this help, I never was very consistent with my chipping. Over the weekend, I watched this video and practiced in my living room. The next day I played golf and had my best chipping day ever which resulted in my best score this season a 78, two strokes under my age. I even chipped two in, one for a birdie and the other for a par. Thanks Chris for some great tips. Also, I really enjoy all of your videos.
You definitely deserve to be interviewed on the Golf Channel. ⛳️ Firing a 78 at age 80, that's world class golf right there. But noooooooooooooo, all the Golf Channel wants us to see is the yutes shoot 62.
I have been teaching golf for over twenty years. I am 72 years older and this is the best explanation of the chipping that I have seen so far. I am teaching junior’s at my club , these tips will help me with the chipping session of my classes.
By far my favorite instructor on UA-cam!! By far!! You have been key for me going from a 15 handicap to 7 in 8 months. Thank you sir for what you do! If you ever give away some private lessons, I want in!! Lol
I'm speechless. I cannot believe how many strokes I saved from your technique! I finally feel confident using more body than wrist. I had many compliments over the past 3 weeks on getting within 3-8 feet from the pin on chipping and pitching the ball. No more gimmick clubs. My biggest downfall is when I lose faith and think I'm going to chip too far. When I do, the ball barely goes a yard. I go back to your basics, have confidence in the movement, and I'm back again! Thanks for sharing.
Such clear instruction. Monday score 99. Tuesday score 89--on the same course. Mostly due to the improvement in chipping this video helped me achieve..
Honestly I tried this today and it massively improved my chipping game and even got a chip in birdie , such a simple change but so effective, I always used to chip with pw but after 30mins chipping with LW PW SW I realised my SW was better for me , so thank you
I do watch Chris and I recently commented about his teaching ability and I make no apology for repeating it, he is one of the best at breaking down and explaining the understandable steps (cause & effect) to achieve the positive outcome of the lesson. (with lots of practice of course)
Stare at the target and glance at the ball. Very good advice. Probably, you need to mention the ratio of flight and roll for various clubs. Thank you very much for the precious advice and Cheers from Indonesia.
I have tried a few chipping methods from various online instructors. This is the only system that has worked! Consistent contact and trajectory. FINALLY I have a repeatable chipping method. Thank you
I once had ideas of green side chipping but I lost this year. After I watched your lesson I had a great around. I will be watching other lessons of yours. Thank you!!
Very good Chris ! I stopped playing some years ago because of the dreaded JARTHURS around the green.Went to a few pros in Australia where I lived at the time no result, in the end through utube fixed it myself ! Wish I had seen this 10 years ago !
Just rewatched this video after implementing it a few months ago. It's so effective that these 5 techniques deserve their own channel. Thank you for sharing Mr. Chris!! ❤
Davis Love III told me to step off the distance to the cup and fly my PW half way and the ball will roll the other half. This works to perfection on flat or mostly flat greens.
Yes, a great Formula as long as one can consistently Judge the Swing needed to land on the Target Spot. Land *2 Feet Short* of the Target and you end up *4 Feet Short* of the Hole because of your 50/50 ratio with the PW. I agree with Chris about varying Club Selection because First, I find my Distance from the Ball to a Target Spot 3 to 5 Feet onto the Green (Carry Distance) and then measure the remaining Distance to the Hole (Roll Out Distance). I read - Target Spot to the Hole - as "a Putt" to adjust "Roll Out" and THEN make a Club Selection, based on "Carry" vs. "Roll Out".
Thank you so much. I've been struggling with the directions of my chips. I will explore standing closer and starring at the target and glancing at the ball. I am confident with practice I will be able to chip better.
Great instructions for chipping! These tips have helped me tremendously. I’m getting back into golf after taking a long break and this video has helped reduce my score
I watched. This video three times in a row and then broke 85 for the first time today. I even pitched in in from 42 yards out. I get there’s lots of luck in that, but this video gave me the chance.
Hello? My shortcoming was the short game around the green. I learned a lot from watching your video today. Let's practice at the short game court today. thank you
Great tips Chris. Love. using 8 iron for these shots. Best tip I ever was given is to hit the bounce of the club into the ground . Great result when I get this right.
Thanks David, I did think about that vid and may well to that, just a lot more variation when pitching so harder to nail down one technique, but probably should do a vid like that
Good vid. Totally agree with where you want the ball to land rather than the hole itself....love the guy in the background running to save the ball from going in the drink 😆
Hi Chris great video, chipping has always been my very weak part of my game, normally due to poor ball striking. After hearing what you said about setup then looking at your target a lot, I thought I would take it one step further and address the ball then chip only looking at the target and have found great results in doing so thanks very much
I keep watching videos on chipping technique. Another young pro on UA-cam also teaches this technique i.e. no wrist hinge, move the left arm, which is the radius, which results in a constant swing arc. Contrary to the method recommended by that world class golf coach in Dubai.
The best advice I received was to open the face, then regrip and open stance with weight slightly forward. I’m not sure I’ve mastered it, but when it does work it’s terrific.
This helped me a lot. Not trying to be cocky, but I was always an amazing chipper from 15-45 yards out. Last time I played, I was thinning the ball and my form felt off. I used these tips and it seemed like I had returned to form, and I even got a chip in. Many thanks!
Best tip for me recently was to use a split grip. I was struggling not to flick the ball being far too wristy. As soon as I adopted the split grip with the setup and various shots it stopped most of the mishits unless I looked up too early 🥴. Great videos thanks. New subscriber
BEST TIP...From an old Johnny Miller instructional video...imagine throwing a beach ball under hand into a laundry basket. This visually helps me judge distance and have the right tempo on my chips.
I really enjoy Chris videos... best UA-cam golf instructor. I hurt my back and haven't been able to play but a few times a year, but before I do go play I always run through Chris Ryan's video's for a refresher.
Really good instruction. I enjoy and learn from your videos. Thanks, As for club selection I use the rule of 12 Less flight distance should result in more accuracy. The key is estimating the distance to the landing spot and distance of rollout required. I chip more with a 8 or 9 iron than in the past where I always used a PW Rule of 12 can be googled for explaination and exmples.
One the best things that I’ve heard chipping is where my relationship to the ball and how close they are . Once I started putting my feet close together and opening my left foot, I had better results. You are right on card with everything
Chris great video, thanks. A question: I see many videos explaining an alternative technique by using the bounce of the club instead of coming negative into the bal and then the grass. What is your opinion about that and why didn’t you use this in your video? Regards
You use "the Bounce on Wedges" for longer Pitch Shots where you need more Ball Speed and Spin. The Shot that Chris is demonstrating - "the Chip" - is simply a very short range "Pitch and Run" that doesn't need any Height or Spin because there is no Obstacle in the way.
1) Accelerate the club head through the ball. For a short chip, take it back less. For a longer chip, take it back a bit further. That will give less or more club head speed, respectively, at impact. Decelerating the club head is a common mistake, especially on short chips and puts. Accelerating the club head through the ball applies to all shots, from tee shots to puts. Adjust your takeaway for distance. Longer takeaway means more club head acceleration. 2) Pick a landing spot, and hit to it. You want to get the ball rolling on the green well before the hole. A rolling ball has more chance of going in than a flying or bouncing ball. The tip here to use different clubs for different length chips helps with that. A longer roll means a lower lofted club (e.g., a short iron). A shorter roll means using a wedge of some sort.
Thanks Chris, this is a great video. I'm going to try these tips. 2 questions - I've seen the PGA pros using putters from off the green. What do you think about this strategy? Would you consider a chipper like the new Ping chipper?
I'll go one further.... I'm nearly 84 , played for 74 of those and have a lot of trouble with chipping. Thank you for the 5 tips this is going to get rid of quite a few bad shots round the green!!
Cheers Chris, Great vedio on chipping. Let's sum it up at the end, 1. Don't be a one club wonder, 2. Set up for success, 3. Set in closer to the ball, 4. Keep your BUTT MOVING, 5. Get your focus, stare at the the target and glance at the golf ball.
I seem to remember a video clip with Nick Faldo where he advocated a SLIGHT out to in motion with the club. Does anyone know where I can find the video. I have tried this and it has helped.
Hi Chris, in using a variety of clubs to vary the distance of chips, the same clubbead speedr and length of swing is required. Do you emphasise this in your videos. Your short game instruction has lowered my h/c from 17 to 11. Oliver
Great video! I know all this but seeing and hearing it all in one place like this is a great reminder, especially as I’ve been struggling with greenside chips recently too 👍
Hi Chris - When you bring the club closer and onto the toe area of the bottom edge, won't that alter the clubface so that it points to the right of the target? For example, if you stuck one of those magnetic pointers on the clubface, and lifted the heel of the bottom edge , it would shift to the right. Also the fact that you have forward lean, that would make contact with clubface even more rightwards too because the club path would be slightly more in-out (while also descending).
Slightly Open Stance AND "Keeping the Butt Moving" corrects the Lie, and the Stroke is actually slightly Out to In, NOT In to Out. I've been using the basics of this Technique for at least 40 years.
Im a chest chipper,! most golfers trying your/my technique would be amazed/frightened by the amount of body movement through the ball relative to the shortness of shot ,but this is the only way to produce controllable energy if you have soft stable arms and clubhead otherwise you will just hit at ball with loose hands/arms clubhead
The best advice you gave that changed my chipping, was to consider where you want the ball to land, pick your spot and focus on that only, not the flag!
I will have to try this - I tend to stand way behind the ball when chipping and try to get under it…Also - never thought about trying an 8iron when close.
Hi Chris was just chilling today before my second round of the season. I’ve struggled with chipping and pitching forever. I tried your get closer tip with my 7 iron , the results were amazing, had about 10 chips and a third of them were close but it was the consistent strike that I got. I didn’t get time to practice until I got on the course. Still great results certainly gave me the impetus to go out and practice before my next match next week. Thanks so much you da man. Cheers Keith Butler
Great stuff Chris! Thanks for the detailed info "but" where is the lawn mower? In all the video's of yours that I have watched to date there is always a lawn mower mowing in the back ground. 🤔
Thanks Chris, Taking these 5 tips to the course today after a very successful two day practise session…these ideas really work, especially ‘get in close’ and ‘keeping handle moving’. 🤞🏽🥃
Gday mate! Totally agree with your first four tips but I think the last one is by far the most useful and one most players neglect. It’s amazing when u stare at the flag and do some practice shots how much more distance and touch feel u get. It’s like long range air putting is the best way I can describe it
Number 2, level shoulders are crucial, but like you alluded too, all the tips say, ball back, hands forward, those things drop the back shoulder, which moves the bottom of the swing way behind the ball, then you're screwed.
I used to be an excellent chipper of the golf ball. I lost my confidence and I can occasionally hit a good ship, but I’m more surprised by a good chip than I ever was before. I would love to send you a video of me chipping so you could give me some tips.
I think roll percentages are too variable, the lie can change that ratio, the greens speed, the carry distance, slope etc. Maybe as a real basic baseline it can work, I’d generally suggest just creating an environment during practice where you can develop and get feedback which can help feel
Hi Chris are you keeping the sole off the floor on your 56,60 deg clubs as in the video they look like they are laying flat as they do in your other chipping videos
Question.. I hear from others to keep the lead arm straight , but that’s kinda tough to do while also getting really close to the ball and squaring the sole.. any tips? Just choke up more?
Best chipping tip I have found: The Rule of 12. I’ll let you research how it works, but it takes the guess work out of which club you should use for a chip shot (of course you have to adjust for uphill, downhill, etc.). Now I feel like I can get up-and-down every time.
Hi, Thank you for the lesson. My question is : how do you deal with the club face direction that turn out to be directed to the right due to the increased angle of the Shaft with the ground ? I applied the directions and all my balls go a little to the right. Thanks for your answer.

Classic putt/chip at 11:40 in the background. Zooms through the green into the lake with partner chasing after it- priceless
😂😂I must admit I didn’t see that Alan, may have to go back and watch that
Brilliant. Chris go and give that bloke your card!
@@ChrisRyanGolf Of course you did not see it.. you were talking about focusing at the time. :)
Stare at the target and glance at the ball. Very good advice. Probably, you need to mention the ratio of flight and roll for various clubs. Thank you very much for the precious advice and Cheers from Indonesia.
I had fallen back into the bad habit of just using one club for chipping.. this was a great reminder to use different clubs and it has really helped.
I have tried a few chipping methods from various online instructors. This is the only system that has worked! Consistent contact and trajectory. FINALLY I have a repeatable chipping method. Thank you
Brilliant, I’m a British Pro working in Austria. Set up, skill and Target orienteered. Perfect.
I once had ideas of green side chipping but I lost this year. After I watched your lesson I had a great around. I will be watching other lessons of yours. Thank you!!

Really great video. Coming off winter I seemed to have forgotten how to chip and these tips really should / will help! Thanks very much.
That last tip is definitely for me. Look forward to working on it. Thank you!
I absolutely love the short game I carry 5 different wedges AW GW PW SW LW but I love to use a hybrid 4 around the fringe of the green
Thanks Chris - your tips were very helpful; I've been giving them a try and my chipping has improved already.
A million dollar advice. I'm 60 & just started a fortnight back. Thanks. God bless you!
This is the best chip tips I ever had. I learn a lot of golf from this video. Thanks🙏

best tip : " whenever you can putt...putt" Hank Haney it's so true, yet I carry 4 wedges....
So true, a poor putt is always closer than a poor chip
Ha ha, I call my putter my 3° wedge ....
It was Arnold Palmer saying that way before Hank. Some great things to try here. Good on you, grip down not "choke", lol.
Just get your misses closer to the green Butch lol

You use "the Bounce on Wedges" for longer Pitch Shots where you need more Ball Speed and Spin.
The Shot that Chris is demonstrating - "the Chip" - is simply a very short range "Pitch and Run" that doesn't need any Height or Spin because there is no Obstacle in the way.

Fabulous Chris! . You are my favorite instructor. How happy are you about Matt Fitsgerald, US OPEN winner?

8 iron using a putting stroke! It has done wonders for me at a variety of distances
Love that shot, feels so easy to get the ball on the green and rolling, almost the safest way to play them
The shoulder mis-alignment is MY problem. Thanks for pointing that out.
Hi Chris - When you bring the club closer and onto the toe area of the bottom edge, won't that alter the clubface so that it points to the right of the target? Best chipping tip I have found: The Rule of 12. I’ll let you research how it works, but it takes the guess work out of which club you should use for a chip shot (of course you have to adjust for uphill, downhill, etc.). Now I feel like I can get up-and-down every time.
Best chipping lesson ever.
Hi, Thank you for the lesson. My question is : how do you deal with the club face direction that turn out to be directed to the right due to the increased angle of the Shaft with the ground ? I applied the directions and all my balls go a little to the right. Thanks for your answer.
Great tips
Thank you so much. Great tips.
