The bride price is practiced in some African cultures, and serves the same purpose - to thank the brides family and to show that you can provide for the bride, as essentially you are taking her away from people who have raised, protected and provided for her.

The Dowry culture exists in India and it proves to be really ugly. In early times it was a concept that the bride takes a portion of her father's wealth for her own comfort. But now it has been a horrendous curse on a woman's family as nowadays dowry is used by the groom and his family for their own purposes.

Historically speaking, this isn’t true. In early times, socioeconomic standards play a major role and this includes the daughter being the father’s legal property thus her having a “price” in order to be taken out of the home. It’s origins are rooted in exploitation of the daughter
