Such incredible nobility always portrayed by Mifune in his characters, always a humble man of incredible abilities and impeccable sense of honour.

On young men growing into young adults these cinematic portrayals are unforgettable rites of passage of a bygone era?
This movie was a reminder to the first post-war generation of Japanese youth - a voice in the dark days reminding them what it means to be Japanese, what the national spirit of their people is, what it means to stand and count for something. It is saying - Do not forget what you are - do not forget your heritage. Always stand, and be men, Japanese men. This movie is a lesson for us all.

The Tohou company sued Leone's production company and Kurosawa wrote him a letter saying "Mr. Leone, I have seen your movie, it is a great movie, but it is my movie." Leone was very happy that Kurosawa liked his movie, but her lawyer didn't 😅.
I had a chance to see this movie. It is awesome. It's way better than the garbage they make now. I'd walk right past "The Dial of Destiny." if this movie were playing in the next theater. . . Dial of Destiny. Like I want to see a movie about a clock.
The title, 'The Lonely Shepherd' is wrong. Yojimbo (用心棒) means bodyguard. In this film, this Ronin (unemployed) was asked by one faction of the village/town gang to aide against the rival gang group. But the Ronin end up eliminating both gang groups. It's a win win for the villagers.

Mifune was the John Wayne or Rambo of Japan - always the noble warrior of incredible abilities but impeccable honour. But it's quite likely this is WAY earlier than your "time."
