    Bro, your frustration is valid and well-spoken because you verbalized what I feel A LOT of fans felt about this thing! Honestly, I was going into this with low expectations when the documentary was announced because I learned Spike Lee wasn't directing like he did for Off The Wall & Bad...
    Remember Lifetime did a 4-part documentary on Janet Jackson last year. Sure, that was about her entire life/career rather than one album. However, THAT is how they should've done Thriller 40! Kind of like The New Edition Story, this should've been spread out over MULTIPLE episodes. Why not do 4 to kinda align with it being the 40th anniversary?!
    Episode 1: The gap between Off The Wall & Thriller covering MJ's desire to make the biggest album ever since Off The Wall didn't win the awards or have the cultural impact that he wanted it to have. Go over the production, writing and collaborations for EVERY TRACK ON THE ALBUM! No need to even spend much if any time on MJ's beginnings, Motown or The Jacksons era because the Off The Wall documentary did an excellent job covering all of that! Remember Bad 25 didn't spend too much time on that stuff at all. We got a BRIEF glimpse at how big Thriller was, how MJ planned to follow up that album and we jumped right into Bad.
    Episode 2: The short films, Motown 25, Grammy & AMA sweeps and the Victory Tour/Pepsi stuff
    Episode 3: The Thriller Era in general going over just the phenomenon that the album had during the 80s from the album sales, MJ merch, etc. Additional awards that the album received and records that it broke! This entire episode could just cover how massive the album was on a global scale!
    Episode 4: The cultural impact of Thriller over the past 4 decades! Now, THIS is the episode where you could feature a number of musical artists who were inspired by MJ! From Chris Brown (his awesome Thriller performance at one award show and let's not forget his MJ tribute at the 2010 BET Awards) to Usher (yeah, Mr. Let It Burn could make a brief cameo in this episode too), The Weeknd and so many more! All of the social media info that they dropped in the documentary like TikTok numbers, etc. would fit into this episode as well.
    There have been documentaries on albums that PALE in comparison to the success and impact of Thriller, but they were A LOT longer than 90 minutes! Bad 25 was over 2 hours and covered EVERYTHING that you needed to know! Heck, even MJ fanatics could walk out of that documentary having learned something new!
    The Off The Wall documentary was only about 90 minutes, but they did SO MUCH with that time! It covered MJ's literal journey from 'Motown to OTW!' Like Bad 25, it went over EVERY SINGLE TRACK IN ORDER! Even the lesser known or less popular tracks got their time to shine! Thriller 40 just glossed over or didn't even mention Baby Be Mine & The Lady In My Life!
    Also, this should've come out alongside the Thriller 40 album/vinyl releases last year during the ACTUAL 40th anniversary! If I remember correctly, Bad 25 documentary aired on ABC around or during the same time when the Bad 25 album was released. I know that the only way to purchase the DVD of the documentary was through the MJ website.
    Journey From Motown to Off The Wall was released in a very special way. You could purchase the Off The Wall CD and it came with a DVD with the documentary!
    I almost died laughing when you mentioned Good Burger 2 because I said the SAME THING to a friend because I did the $3.99 deal for the streaming service and figured I'd get a 2-for-1 deal by getting to watch GB 2 & Thriller 40 😂
    As much as I can't wait for your future New Edition content, I'm REALLY eager for the MJ content you'll eventually do on your channel!

      That’s actually a great idea, if they did something like what The Last Dance Netflix series was for Michael Jordan. But that’s beyond their comprehension and even if it wasn’t, they are too lazy to put the effort in to really bring that project into fruition.
      And it isn’t like they don’t have the footage because they do. They filmed the entire 1998 season of the bulls, and then revolved the interviews on top of the unreleased footage and it was super successful. Needless to say about how successful a Michael Jackson Netflix limited docuseries would be.
      And yeah I’m excited to start doing Michael Jackson albums once I’m finished with New Edition. I appreciate your thoughts 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾

    I think as MJ fans, we were underwhelmed because we’ve already done years of research on Michael. This was more for the people that don’t know these facts about this album. There’s really nothing new that they told us that isn’t already in the internet. I do, however, like the fact that the rest of the public is enjoying this. This documentary is #1 on paramount + and his streaming numbers have shot up even further

      It seems like Michael Jackson’s legacy and likeness is just a commodity that they use to make profit. They aren’t concerned with building upon it; just doing the bare minimum so we can’t say they’re doing nothing.

    Thank you for telling the truth about this documentary. Michael Jackson’s story needs to be told the right way on any subject regarding his music, creativity, performances, ideas etc. This should be the same for any artist that’s beloved by the public whether it’s Prince, James Brown, Stevie Wonder, Luther Vandross etc. They have to do it right every single time!

    Here's what I feel they left out: (1) THRILLER got the record business out of a three-year slump (1979-1982); (2) It also buried that DISCO SUCKS movement once and for all; and 3) The VHS sales of MAKING MICHAEL JACKSON'S THRILLER significantly increased VCR sales.

    This doc was all over the place, the sequencing was horrible, and I wish more was covered, plus the songs should’ve been broken down more. The rare footage was the only highlight, but I NEED A CONCERT FILM! Also Vincent Price wasn’t MENTIONED!

  • @mitchellbanks34
    @mitchellbanks34 8 місяців тому +3

    I agree with you bro, I was a bit disappointed especially considering that I’ve seen both of the Spike Lee documentaries many times over and to me they are templates for what great music retrospectives should be. I honestly don’t know which of those two I love the most but if I had to choose I’d say “Journey From Motown To Off The Wall”, but “Bad 25” is in the closest of 2nd place. I set the bar LOW for any new Michael Jackson content so I wasn’t too upset with it. If it’s any consolation, my 5 year old nephew walked in the room and caught the last 1/3 of the doc and when it was over he wanted to watch more Michael Jackson videos. The ENTIRE “Thriller 40” project has been lackluster. It’s so much more satisfying being a Prince fan right now; that “Diamonds and Pearls” super deluxe reissue with all the unreleased material and concert/rehearsal footage and new interviews with Prince’s collaborators from that time was EXCELLENT! And they do this sorta thing every 2 years.

    The fans should create a documentary, so many fans have the talent and the skills to create something spectacular in honor of Michael Jackson, you make some really good points, your very articulate with your delivery in how you explain your thoughts, you have some really good idea's, you should be in the management department, for the creating of something for Michael or for the making of something for Michael, you really should be there at the top, I think you would have a lot of support for things like that, you have the capacity to do things along those lines, I'd definitely vote for you to be a manager of some sort, you are genuine and real about things, and I think you have the ability to create something high quality and high class, something that just goes above and beyond, way over the bar 🌸

    • @misterDjayMDJ
      @misterDjayMDJ  5 місяців тому +1

      Thank you, I appreciate you saying all that. I'm actually going to be doing album retrospectives on Michael albums real soon. I've already been doing them on New Edition since last year and I've gotten great feedback from them over time. If you're into New Edition, Bobby Brown etc, you should definitely give those videos a watch so you can get an idea of what you can expect for the retrospective on Off The Wall.

      It's okay, I share my honest opinions on things when certain things get my attention, and if I feel the need to say something, then I will, often I will make a comment to people who I think are authentic, genuine, sincere and real, I've watched a few of your videos and I think you are an intelligent person, what you said in your comment in response to my comment, that's great, to hear that, with what your working on, you definitely sound like you know what your talking about, and I really hope your projects go really well, the passion for Michael is evident, you just have something that is there, you have that creativeness about you, and what you say makes a lot of sense, I'm not familiar with New Edition, I don't think, and I don't know much about Bobby Brown's work, I know that he was married to Whitney and that's about it really, but I respect a lot of your opinions in relation to Michael Jackson, so your recommendations to watch those videos, is intriguing, but what you produce for Michael or what you end up making in the name/honor of Michael, that is something to really look forward to, I literally have more faith in the fans to do something so incredible for Michael, and with keeping his legacy alive 🌸

    This Documentary was just an utterly uncohesive mess! My issue is that the structure isn’t even on par with Spike Lee’s Off The Wall documentary imma just say this to keep it short…Bad 25 = Structure,Journey from Motown to Off The Wall = Information, and Thriller 40 = Rare Footage👑💯(Now i will say Mary J Blige was apart of the cast for MJ’s “Number Ones” Documentary from (2003) handpicked by MJ so she deserved her spot tbh and I agree that they have all of MJ’s concerts on film theater quality from the original source in MJ’s Archival Vault just sitting in there to rot smh it’s just underwhelming at this point. But what i will say is this documentary made me gain even more respect that I already had for MJ just knowing all the obstacles that was put in the way of his legendary Thriller Era run.)

    I completely agree with EVERYTHING you said. It was fun too watching you rant about it. I do feel that the estate only has one objective which is not satisfying fans, but creating new fans with a minimum amount of new footage. Making sure the legend continuous. So they can do the same trick 10 years from now with again a few new clips so those new fans can walk out Thriller 50 feeling disappointed like we all are today. I expect the same to happen with his biopic. Hope I’m wrong.

Documentary should been focused on people who was involved in the project. If they wanted Usher, will i am, BTS should be all at the end. Were is the Billie jean behind the scenes footage ? Actually went to the test screening in London last year and although it was good to be amongst so many people that appreciated MJs art and have the opportunity to see some new footage, I was extremely underwhelmed. Why they didnt get Spike Lee to do it I dont know coz BAD 25 was lightyears ahead of this in terms of its content. Remember watching that for the first time and seeing the behind the scenes footage of the BAD short film thinking "YES! FINALLY!" The estate hasnt really done anything worth while since that imho. Thing is.. they actually cleaned this documentary up quite alot.. you would've been even more disappointed with some of the quality of footage they spliced in, it looked sloppy! I even amazingly have a better idea next to his ideas:
    The estate could've re-released the short films of "Billie Jean", "Beat It", & "Thriller" on television for the yonger generation would've had the experience that the other folks had grew up before the uprising and dependency of UA-cam. Airing it on MTV, VH1, BET, ABC, NBC, CBS, FOX (I'm just listing those networks as an example).
    Remastered "Billie Jean" short film, "Beat It" and "Thriller" have excellent remastered 4K treatment and it looks amazing, they should've remastered the Making of Thriller in 4K.
    Heavy promotion of Thriller 40 through commercials on TV, UA-cam, many other websites, billboards, magazines to make this album a BIG DEAL as it was back in 1982 and 1983.
    Remastering the Victory Tour full concert to be on UA-cam, DVD, and Blu-Ray.
    TAKE AWAY THE "THRILLER 25 REMIXES" AND NEVER LET IT GO NEAR THE THRILLER 40 REISSUE.
    And lastly, having every copy of the Thriller 40 into vinyls, CDs, cassette tapes in stores around the world with the reissue anniversary edition by having not just tracks we have that is known unreleases by the Moonwalker community but having "Nite Line" as the INTRO as a second disc and few outtakes abd extended versions of the classic 9 track listings of how it came before and alternate takes that listeners that the access to hear how this song became a progress of hearing on the radio today.
    If the estate had done that, it would've been the most incredible, greatest reissues out of any artists' catalog (next to the Beatles and Prince...wish the Jimi Hendrix estate would've done that too.)
