Factsss
I was disappointed the moment I learned Spike Lee wasn't putting this documentary together like the Bad 25 & Off The Wall ones because he did such an excellent job.
Can we talk about the horrendous run time being 90ish minutes?!
A documentary celebrating the best selling album of all time deserved A LOT more than this! In the previous documentaries, they went over EVERY track on Bad & OTW. However, The Lady In My Life and Baby Be Mine got little to no love.
This should've been a multi-part documentary!
Remember Lifetime did a 4-part documentary on Janet Jackson last year. Sure, that was about her entire life/career rather than one album. However, THAT is how they should've done Thriller 40! Kind of like The New Edition Story, this should've been spread out over MULTIPLE episodes. Why not do 4 to kinda align with it being the 40th anniversary?!
Episode 1: The gap between Off The Wall & Thriller covering MJ's desire to make the biggest album ever since Off The Wall didn't win the awards or have the cultural impact that he wanted it to have. Go over the production, writing and collaborations for EVERY TRACK ON THE ALBUM! No need to even spend much if any time on MJ's beginnings, Motown or The Jacksons era because the Off The Wall documentary did an excellent job covering all of that! Remember Bad 25 didn't spend too much time on that stuff at all. We got a BRIEF glimpse at how big Thriller was, how MJ planned to follow up that album and we jumped right into Bad.
Episode 2: The short films, Motown 25, Grammy & AMA sweeps and the Victory Tour/Pepsi stuff
Episode 3: The Thriller Era in general going over just the phenomenon that the album had during the 80s from the album sales, MJ merch, etc. Additional awards that the album received and records that it broke! This entire episode could just cover how massive the album was on a global scale!
Episode 4: The cultural impact of Thriller over the past 4 decades! Now, THIS is the episode where you could feature a number of musical artists who were inspired by MJ! From Chris Brown (his awesome Thriller performance at one award show and let's not forget his MJ tribute at the 2010 BET Awards) to Usher, The Weeknd and so many more! All of the social media info that they dropped in the documentary like TikTok numbers, etc. would fit into this episode as well.
Maybe when Thriller 50 rolls around we'll finally get a documentary worthy of Thriller!
Most Definitely.
Agreed
I like how in detailed this comment is, makes a lot of sense, surprised they didn't go this route 😅
I wouldn't mind a 4-5 hour documentary 😊
Seriously, this documentary could've well should've been 3+ hours! This is the biggest selling album is musical history and it deserved WAY MORE! @@drawingwinxstyle9193
Do you think Spike Lee might direct one for Dangerous?
I love how Michael didn’t listen to his team when it came to the thriller video. I loved the behind the scenes moments. I would have loved to know the story behind Human Nature
Look up Toto "Human Nature". One of the guys said he wrote it from his daughter getting picked on at school by a boy, so she said "why does he treat me that way" or something. Why Why. so that's what they had. Quincy and them didn't like the lyrics added ,so that asked the Toto guy if they could have wrtitten their own lyrics and he said ya, so Rod Temperton wrote new lyrics I think or whoever has lyrical credit
Felt like there wasn’t enough content on Thriller 40, I totally agree with how they didn’t touch in PYT and Lady in my Life. Thanks for the commentary!
Exactly what ever happened to lady in my life ? I Wish spike Lee did the doc
The lady in my life I saw two different couples dancing to that at their wedding reception
5:43
Latoya was on "P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing)", too.
So was Rebbie
I was blessed to have gone to see michael Jackson perform during the victory tour✨✨ it was a thrilled to see him live in concert with his brothers and sugerfoot ✨✨seeing him on stage was such a blast ít was so amazing to get to experience that moment ✨✨
Mamase Mamasa Mamakusa actually came from a album of a black dude back in the day that Michael liked. t’s based off of a refrain from the song “Soul Makossa” 4 released in 1972 by a saxophonist from Cameroon named Manu Dibango. I actually thought they would mention that, but you know how it is we as fans gotta find out everything...lol
I would travel back to the 80s, each time, I listen to the Thriller album. Good times, Good times. Really miss Michael Jackson, RIP MJ.😪🙏
It’s so nice being a Prince fan because we just got footage of a full length, never before seen concert from 1992 live at his Glam Slam club in Minneapolis with his band The New Power Generation in preparation for the “Diamonds & Pearls Tour”. It was EXCELLENT!!! Michael’s estate is dropping the ball.
Tell me about it! Prince's estate is doing a very good job and I am loving it. Michael's estate... smh...
@@daryltracy7949 I’m not gon lie though. I was a bit disappointed with the “Thriller 40” documentary. There was so much that was missing. With the two Spike Lee documentaries, I had no notes and I’ve seen them each NUMEROUS TIMES! There were so many missed opportunities like that “Mama Se Mama Sah Ma Makusa” origin. That was their cue to reference The “Soul Makosa” song from the 70s. Spike would’ve been all over that.
@@mitchellbanks34 Yeah Spike would have done a better job of focusing on the ACTUAL ALBUM. Nelson focused more on the hype which is a tale that's been told over and over again! We wanted a deep dive into the creative process of the album. It was not great. Enjoyable but not great.
Prince estate best estate of all time. mj estate straight garbage bruh, the fans are basically keeping his legacy alive.
@@erenyeeagah204 bruh I hate to see John Branca’s ass coming. That muhh fukka talk like he quoting a Wikipedia article. Plus the credits had nothing to do with “Thriller”. What the hell “This Is It” and “Immortal” have to with “Thriller”?
maan, bout time. i was checking UA-cam the night the Documentary aired for you and "MJ Fangirl" to post your reviews.
concerning the Victory Tour footage: i was always suspecting that The Estate was sitting on high quality-professionally filmed footage of the Tour. i wish several concerts of the Tour would be released.
You're a true MJ superfan Trapson. That Shamone at the end took me out 🤣 Wonderful review! ♥️
The Victory Tour was amazing. I wish Michael was still here
We need a full victory tour 4k film and Live album !!!!
They better give us 4k concert footage for the mj biopic
I wish spike lee did the doc may be thriller 50 then 😏
Yes indeed I enjoyed the documentary ❤️🤗👑🙌🏾 thank you for your response 🙏🏾🙏🏾
Good to see you Trapson!!!
There's no way you can cover the Thriller Era in 88 minutes!
Right, needed a mini series.
It was definitely a very cool and exciting documentary film of the Thriller 40 and to see some rare and exclusive footages and various background stories of what this era was all about. Definitely was a groovy time to see it, woohoo, SHAMONE!!! 👍🏼💯✨
It would've been nice if we'd gotten some interviews with some of the dancers from the Beat It short film. Michael Lorenz from that 90s cop show "New York Undercover" was one of the dancers in that video. And of course Vincent Patterson is still kicking, so it would've been nice to hear their experiences making Beat It.
Michael de Lorenzo
So much Better than "Leaving Neverland".
(But then again, Anything is Better than that Bullsh*t)
I thought it was such a charming documentary. I loved that John Landis participated 🥰 seems like a true friend.
It definitely is unfortunate that the family wasn't really in any of the documentary.
I always learn something new when i watch you talk about michael. I am very appreciative of your content.
The 40 years from now thing crushed me too 😭.
😂😂😂 Not you superimposed into the victory tour. God bless you man.
Despite his segment being what we've heard before in the original Making of Thriller documentary from the 80s, his energy in this Thriller 40 documentary was excellent! I loved it! Sad we lost so many people who were part of the OG Thriller project over the past few decades, but seeing him was good :)
@@OurKindofEntertainment I actually hadn't seen the making of thriller before 😭 I didn't even know it existed until this documentary. Even though I have been a huge fan my whole life (34 years) I guess I didn't really have a lot of access to stuff growing up (before everything was on the internet). I'm just now realizing there's a whole lot of stuff out there to find out about him and I'm taking my time to go through it all 🥰.
I promise you; watch making of Thriller because it doesn't just cover the song/short film; it covers Jackson 5, The Jacksons, Off The Wall and the Thriller album in a marvelous way! Far better than Thriller 40 did...@@waterflower4458
@@waterflower4458 I believe it came out alongside, or shortly after the short film itself. Really great insights and process about the creative work that was done to accomplish it.
They really should've let Spike Lee direct this thang. He did a great job with the other 2, Bad 25 & Journey... Those joints were 2 hours... This one was good, but not great... All the footage they could've used, they didn't. Spike should've did it, but shout to Nelson George, he documented lots of the culture throughout the 80's as a writer for several magazines
Miss your lives!!' they were fun!! i think they released this doc Dec 2 cuz 40 yrs ago the Thriller vid was released on this date!💗💗
Maybes a reaction video/ watch, y'all! Brilliant review.
Yes, love him tapping in '84!
The victory era was lit✨✨ Michael Jackson was glow blazing✨✨ during the victory era during the victory tour✨✨ victory era was da Glo✨✨ back in 84 ✨✨✨
RESPECT FROM TRINIDAD 🇹🇹 TRAPSON.
I did enjoy the film, but I had some cons with the film was the runtime, as I feel 90 minutes didn't do enough justice for this album, and I wanted more time spent on other songs like Human Nature and Lady In My Life. I also wish they had expanded the victory tour issues and how he couldn't do his own solo tour. Still a fun watch, but it definitely could have been better
The old footage looks great like it was filmed today
Michael Jackson is handsome 😍
Oh yeah 😎
it’s so nice to see a fan who enjoyed this documentary. especially one that is dedicated to the ‘thriller’ era as well as myself. 💜
are you aware of the podcast series called ‘stories in the room’, which is dedicated to the making of the album? it features many people who also appeared in the documentary.
Trapson you are keeping the legend alive. Please lean in to what you're doing and never stop
84 in the building 👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿
Michael Trapson happy holidays
This made me so happy. All the details about how the album was created, it was very intimate. I wish they'd talked more about Human Nature but I'm happy to know Toto had worked on it. I'll definitely have to watch again. 💕
🔴 I loved how we got to hear Mike saying: "I was angry" as in hearing his colossal ambition settling for not an iota less that the Best & the Most Triumphant creativity level possible. 👈💯❤
Keepin’ it Groovy! ✨
Absolutely AMAZING!❤
Dean you was bringing the facts the victory era was like glow✨✨ it was straight LITT Michael Jackson was doing his thing during the victory era during the victory tour✨✨ that glow was glowww glowing during the victory era during the victory tour✨✨ victory era 84 baby ✨✨✨

Today’s my 40th birthday and thriller is the big 40 on my birthday 40 years old, MJ forever and Trrapson forever
Love this☝💯💫👑
The documentary was cool but there was so much missing...All of that they showed has been seen with the exception of the HD Victory Tour footage......... Someone needs to do a REDO with UNSEEN FOOTAGE that we've never seen or heard,....BTW you do an excellent job with your Michael Jackson personality 🔥
Love you Trapson
I completely agree with that like we definitely need like a victory 40 we definitely need a victory tour and Full HD❤❤❤❤❤❤💯
Now I kinda wish he was saying "IMMA SAY IT ONE MORE TIME, I JUST CAN'T STOP" on You Wanna Be Starting Something.

Heyy Trapson ❤🎉
The king of pop
Brung your mic closer. Sounds like youre recording from across the room. Thanks for this video. Awesome!
Man. I wish we could buy this on Amazon Prime. I don’t have Showtime.
Wanna be startin something is my favorite MJ song too! While i love listening to the classic audio version i think my most favorite version is This Is It. Which one is yours?
They didn’t want to invest in Thriller. They didn’t see its potential so that is why Michael put up his own money to make Thriller.
This documentary is very frustrating... nothing I've learnt more I already know... And those amazing cuts from the Victory Tour, WHY DON'T WE STILL HAVE A PROPER RELEASE OF IT ?! F*u** the Estate, they have it and don't release it... They're screwing us up with their so called "amazing" releases...
My favorite is lady in my life ❤️ 💕 💓
Could u release the cut version of the wanna be starting something peformance at the universoul circus?

Hi MT
You can't hind the 🧤 glow
can you make a different version of human nature
🧤 Bilie Jean is not my lover... ✨
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Where is Chris Brown on this documentary? Why was Usher a part of this iconic moment for the Greatest of ALL time, and no mention of Chris???!!! Michael Jackson was beyond his time, and Chris Brown embodies his spirit and craft. Utter shade to not mention the greatest artist of this time, meaning Chris Brown sits at the top above Neo, Usher, Justin T and Justin B.... SERIOUSLY???!!! Chris Brown's talent is effortless. He was born with a gift. Chris Brown LOVES Michael Jackson and He is undeniably worthy to be featured on any documentary that honors The King Of Music and Dance.
I was shocked Nelson George didn't mention Chrus Brown whej he was listing people that Michael influenced but mentioned Doja Cat? That was goofy af. Chris was even slated to do a tribute performance to coincide with Thriller 40 at the AMAs last year or so but we all know how that went down
Michael Trapson where is your house?
ayo?
You wanna be starting something listening to soul makossa
Michael thorapan
Why are you using the normal voice? You should have used the MJ parody voice. And Prince should have been in it.
Yo Michael Trapson I’m making a video currently right now for you I can’t wait for you to see it🎉🎉🎉
