I think they have made some changes to this plane. I just maddened mine, both MY Personal Maiden flight, as well as this planes, and it flew flawlessly. I absolutely love it. Even had several quite successful landings!
Hey Brian… I got this playing for Christmas so I decided before I did anything I would go on UA-cam and see if I could find anything and your video is the first that I picked and I cannot thank you enough for the awesome assistance in the set up, saved me a whole bunch of time and heartache… Bottom line spent the afternoon down at the park and had an absolute wonderful time flying this plane, and I never had one of those wonky things happen… Keep up the good work my friend….. to infinity and beyond
Best video about this plane so far. I knew about the issues but bought one anyway, it looks like some some time between these videos and now, they've made some changes as I haven't been able to stall mine like this. It's my first plane and I'm really loving it, cannot believe the fun I'm having for the price. I do notice though that there's next to no rudder input available once the gyro starts up, and I pretty much fly it only on the right stick because the left does so little. Also 3G mode is pretty much un-flyable for more than 15 seconds before I nearly lose control, but that could be a pilot and trim thing.
Wish I had watched the vid till the unbox build the first time I watched only the flying part after I had already ordered it off ebay. It came today and was amazed at how stupid the wing wiring was, then found opening the bottom hatch giving access to the wires after cutting foam away to allow the connectors to tuck down in the fus while pulling the Y from the bottom w/tweezers. But you were lucky your Cam-locks were turnable to lock the wing on! Even after adjusting the wiring could not get the cams to get deep enough to twist into place. Had to remove the round wing cam seats, to cut away some of the foam w/Dremel half worn down cut-off wheel fit the recesses just right to remove the 1mm of foam needed! Then was able to get the locks to work. PS the right button turns on/off the level control, the left button is Duel Rates in case you hadn't mentioned it. After I finished it, then I thought oh go back and watch the build Brian did and see if he had the same problem, but you only had half, I couldn't get those Cam-locks to work even with pliers! Now let's see if I can fly the damn thing. LOL Good Vid as usual!
Sorry this one caught you off guard. This plane was one of a few from XK I wouldn't get too excited about...but good news, it CAN be made to fly okay, just get the outside hole for the rudder and there's a huge improvement.
@@BrianPhillipsRC Yea set it up as per the book. Sent the seller a note with a disappointed Feedback planed for eBay, but they want me to send them a video of my problem, LOL love it when they ask for that sort of thing! IT"S ALREADY BUILT problems fixed. Now trying to figure out how to edit the video I made. Hmmm, maybe I should send them yours! Just kidding. But then it wouldn't show the cam-lock problem I had and fixed. The wheel hubs are funny J3 CUP. One more thing, I need you to find the solutions to problem things a little quicker so I don't have to scream at the computer screen as long till you do! LOL
@@BrianPhillipsRC I guess we're somewhat of a perfectionist not wanting those wires to hang down inside the cockpit or hanging outside under the wing like 5 other people did in their build videos! Easier but not as neat, or we just have to do it the hard way LOL
i have just finished assembling mine for the first time...did a bit of emery board filing on wing/fuse areas..als0 drilled a hole at top back of clear canopy to make wiring pass easier..filed a hair off those twist wing connectors. Still plenty tight, still needed pliers push/twist
Thanks for the tip about the death spiral. Perhaps the ailerons also need to be on the third hole to reduce chances of wing tip stall? The problem appears to be caused by acute turns at slow speeds regardless of how you achieve that.
I pulled my hobbyzone champ out of storage and put an upgraded eflite mustang motor with a new crispy gear box after i realized i was never going to get this plane you are showing lol. It was only about 15 or 20 bucks shipped for both motor and gearbox and only took a couple minutes to install. Wow this plane does acro now and has almost unlimited vertical and can even fly inverted now. So glad i went this rought because i can use my dx9 and train my 7yr old son on the dx6 with the buddy box.
Well, even after watching your's again and others' Vids about this one and since I wrote you last, had it out making the attempts to get it up which I did, and then found that little habit of it wanting to go DOWN very easily? Hmm, and after numerous unintended visits to the ground requiring a number of repairs and while on the bench doing so started making the video to send to the seller I had mentioned they asked for. In the process realized with the Gyro working the rudder and elevator worked with the Ailerons during the turns and at any time the rudder would suddenly hard left and down it goes unless high enough to recover as you know. But not always, but with the motor running (no Prop) holding by the wingtips moving it all different direction as it might in the sky then come back to the bench and find the rudder full left lock! Ah HA! Does not happen off Gyro only with! I've sent the seller a note about it that there is a flaw in the stabilization system! You and I are not the only people having this problem, everybody else that has reviewed this plane has had the same problem!! Even if they don't admit to it or show it on their channel!
Sounds like you might have two problems going on... 1) CHECK YOUR RUDDER STICK!!!! Might be stuck, INSIDE THE TX!!! I've had this before, usually you can hear something chattering around inside the Tx - my J3 Cub didn't have THIS problem. 2) Get the rudder linkage to the inner most hole, if you haven't already. This will help. The flight controller in this plane doesn't work as well as with other XK planes we've had, and for this reason, we were very let down by this plane ;( I'm sorry you are having some of the same issues we ran into.
Some were updated …I had zero problem with the a160 and regret getting rid of it …I got a fx-9703 right now and it’s no comparison to the a160 …loved that plane …I flew it in all winds never scerd
Well, if you really like it I've got two you can have at a reasonable price, with spare parts and I think 5 or 6 batteries, props, 2 transmitters, receivers, etc. I've lost interest in the hobby, bad knees/hips can't walk far enough to retrieve the long-distance unintentional landing (some would call crashes) also can't afford the AMA and local club fees. Also will be letting my other larger aircraft go as well. Where are you located, if interested in pickup purposes maybe?
Very glad you found the fix before i had a maiden, it arrives Monday 2nd may. Thanks so much for the video. I like this plane so much, I would buy it just as a display :)
I suggest that you fly "a few mistakes high" for a while to ensure you don't get bit....the plane just doesn't warn you at all when about to stall. Good luck, and Yes, the solution to the problem is in the video, but a better solution would have probably been a more nose heavy plane...and it would help fix the issue too ;)
So how did it go for you? Mine is undamaged and totally dismantled to put better electronics inside that I never got more then two good flights from it. Thats been two years ago now. I still have the airframe stored away. This video makes me want to put it all back together to give it another chance.
Hey Brian. I am really enjoying the plane since I found a fix to the death spiral. Like you, I crashed the plane numerous times before I discovered the bugging rudder. Unfortunately, my fix requires using a programmable radio with KM protocol support to bind with the XK receiver. I have a FrSky X9 Lite S with a multi-protocol radio add-on. The problem seems to be a serious bug in the flight controller with small positive rudder in either flight mode. Even with a small amount of rudder stick, the rudder will run to the extreme position and hang resulting in the death spiral. Any input from the right stick snaps it back to neutral and allows recovery. My fix is in two parts, first I zero out the rudder weight in the "6 channel" flight mode since the rudder behavior is a mess and there is already a large amount of rudder mix from the aileron channel. Second, in the "3 channel" flight mode, I add just 5% of rudder to the aileron mix... I know this doesn't make much sense, but it does work. It basically puts just a touch of right stick output whenever you move the rudder and that is enough to eliminate the death spiral lock up while allowing full rudder control independent of aileron. Hopefully XK will fix the controller bug and give this plane the brain it deserves. It's a shame that it shipped this way.
Hi all, I know my comments/reply came late. I managed to contact the Wltoys official store support personnel, XK is belong to Wltoys; and managed to know there is a replacement control board to resolve this erroneous algorithm (mainly is the gyro algorithm issue). I shall be receiving the replacement board in 1-2 weeks from now to test it up (haha, Wltoys willing to provide the replacement board to me for free 🤭)
I've watched a couple of videos on this little cub. My impression is that the wing loading is pretty high - landing speed seem pretty high it's certainly not going to float on the breeze.
Its funny that you say the paint job on this is so good since by the time i finished assembling mine the paint was peeling off the fuselage like it got sunburnt...
The brushless motor and the quality of the model are really impressive and I'm so tempted to buy this. The only experience I have with XK products is the XK A800 and I had some problems with it, mostly that the auto stabilization feels too aggressive, like the plane will be flying level and I'll try to gain altitude by giving it some elevator and after I release the stick the plane noses down and ends up at a lower altitude than I started. It's like it tries to 'undo' my control inputs. I also didn't like how the elevator seemed to move when I increased throttle. I want to get this plane but I've seen the 'death spiral' appear in other reviews too and I just feel like I should save my money for something else.
I bought this plane and the recommended cg is wrong. If you put it at 1/3rd of the wing cord from the leading edge at the fuselage you will be fine. Another thing I learned with my plane, if you hold it down, throttle up 50% or more and then move the rudder back and forth the rudder goes full deflection each direction you move the stick and stays there UNTIL you throttle back and then the rudder will return to center. I fly at 5200' elevation so the higher wing loading makes it fly way faster than scale. Also I removed foam to be able to make it possible to put the battery as far forward as possible. Mine also porpoises like yours. I think the stabilization is a bit too aggressive. And I use the outer holes on the rudder and elevator control horns. I also cranked in half the aileron thickness at the trailing edge of 'up' on both ailerons to create a little "fake" washout to reduce tip stalling. I haven't experienced the tip stall/spin but I've been light on the rudder. Its spring windy here now so I'm not getting true handling feed back yet to make an evaluation on its real flight characteristics. Oh, and full size Cubs have dihedral! That said, the darn thing is so cute I had to buy it and so far, no crashes!
I agree - so cute, but worst experience we've had with an XK product, and we were expecting the sun, moon, and stars for this one ;( Oh well...so many great planes to choose from, and like we agreed - she's quite a looker anyway!
Absolutely, I bought it and gave up when I saw that it was not as easy, I succeeded to put the elevator without damages but I wonder how many of the buyers started to break something at this point :)
the rc champ is my best its the only rc plane i got same price as that one and the champ has zero problems i mostly just build my own free flight models
Oh..and what is the longer flying battery to get..or was the battery it came with gave you 12min of flying time..and would like to know..does the transmitter let you know about the battery time while flying...???...and thank you for getting back to me quickly..thats truly great...😊👍👍👍👍👍
It's been a long time, Emmett, so I can't recall. I'd be lying if I said I touched this plane ever again after filming this review. It's not on my "go to" list of planes to fly. I LOVE the XK lineup, since they bring a high quality flying experience n a budget, but this one just didn't meet my expectations in every arena EXCEPT LOOKS - it was every bit as beautiful as I expected it to be ;)
It's not SOOOOO bad, if you get to the end where I ended up making the adjustments on the Rudder, BUT it's gotta be one of the most beautiful, yet bad flying XK planes we've reviewed.... Super bummer, right???!?!?
From my experience with my 2 planes like this in 6g mode elevator is added automatically as the throttle increases which leads the unknowing pilot to increase throttle to power out of the stall not knowing the elevator is added automatically. When switching (top right) to 3D mode the elevator is up about 15-20 degrees nose up. So you’ll have to turn the elevator control rod about 6 turns in and level the elevator for 3D mode it will fly perfectly. Making sure the battery is full forward in the nose. Seeing about half the battery when installed will have the plane perfectly balanced about an inch and a quarter from the leading edge of the wing.
The spring landing gear is useless and might as well be removed before the first flight . Adding a dab of hot glue to the points where the landing gear is inserted to keep everything else intact in event of a crash. Also this plane handles better at 40-70 percent throttle in level flight. I like my planes like this and had to figure out the kinks with it.
@@shanemichaels8289 what are you doing Shane. Why? You're giving me hopes and making me go buy the damn thing - when I so successfully resisted so far! :D Jokes aside, thanks for the insight. In 6g mode, is there anyway of getting rid of the auto elevator mix?
@@NicoSchweinzer no there’s no way to tune out the auto leveling unless you use a different transmitter and manually tune out. But it flies great in 3D mode with the elevator set level in 3D mode(blinking light on controller) they come factory setup for 6g (solid light on controller) which automatically adds elevator as throttle increases and rudder when ailerons are used.
Hi Brian. I enjoy your videos and value your reviews. I got my plane a couple of weeks ago and like you encountered similar problems with the assembly..........plus a few additional ones. On my plane the rudder control rod was binding to the fuse because of an improperly sized hole. I alleviated this by elongating the pass-thru hole in the fuse with a heated wire. Since the rudder is tied into the ailerons in stability mode, could this be the cause of the wing tip stalls? My rudder and elevator servos didn't seem to be firmly attached to the printed circuit board. I added a generous amount of hot glue to solve this problem. I could not seat the battery forward enough due to the JST motor connector being in the way. I resolved this by using a soldering iron to remove some foam and thus relocating the JST connector. You mention the problem with the aileron wires which will not allow the wing to sit flush on top of the plastic canopy. I pulled these wires back into the receiver bay until the connectors were in line with hole in the back of the cockpit just behind the rear seat. I then routed them thru this hole into the cockpit area. The wing now sits flush and the two wing twist tabs engage without undue force. I believe this hole was intended for that purpose but somebody at the factory just wasn't following the Chinesium instructions. . After listening to you and a couple of other You Tubers about this planes unusual wing tip stalls, I am a little leery about flying this gorgeous looking plane. I am tempted to make it a 'top shelf princess'.
If you put the Rudder linkage in the outermost hole, she does fly okay, but you're right - she is a beauty, and a shame to damage her if you want to keep her on display. As for the corrective actions you took, sounds good to me :)
good afternoon from Greece. thank for the very detailed review 😊. I want to ask y you about fpv flight..I have the tx03 eaching with a 500mah 1s battery. any thoughts about the position of the battery???
I don't, sorry. As for FPV, you can do whatever the plane will hold, but you DO have to keep and maintain a good CG...and keep the weight as low as possible too.
Everything except for the GOOFY fiber-reinforced tape to hold the servo wires in.....REALLY?!?!?!...other than that, it's very beautiful. I just wish they'd have worked out the flight controller better. This plane could run RINGS around the Horizon Hobby offering, BUT they have things dialed in poorly, if you ask me....thus I have to say, while this plane is not BAD, it's just not near as good as it looks...but it does look amazing!
I have this plane and have yet to fly it I've seen other you tubers who have taped the rudder straight and taken the linkage out just using aileron and elevator is this a good way to fly this or should I do as you did using the outside hole on the rudder
I would just suggest get the rudder to move as little as possible. I hate to say this, but wish she flew better. If you have to tape the rudder straight, this plane would fly pretty hokey, in my opinion.
I have a problem with my rudder, before the motor is activated after the battery is put in, the rudder moves like normal, but after i spin up the motor, the rudder barely moves
Hello my friends..just wanted to let you know..that when cub turns it automatically will use its rudder when it turns and only in the expert mode will it only use the Ailarons..to make turns..and you still have your up and down elevators...let me know that you received this message ok...question 2 About that hole..you talked..does the manual tell you what hole to use..before you put it in the last outside hole..????
@@BrianPhillipsRC no my friend..it seems to be automatically joined together with the Ailarons in the transmitter ..and is released when in expert mode..I was watching another build of this cub..and when he began to check everything he noticed that the rudder would slightly move with the Ailarons when checking the left to right movement up and down of the Ailarons..😊when you were flying the plane you said that you use the rubber with your turns..and maybe you didn't know that the plane automatically uses the rubber With out you having to use the rudder..
I took this little Toy out this morning an took it way up, testing the rumoured left wing tip stall,,, an it did the Hottest Drill Bit Ive Ever Seen! Lucky The Beach I was on has the softest sand cause I drilled it many times after My first flukey success. Your just a Freak Brian and got this Gig Wired already, Unreal Stuff.
Hey Brian, I appreciate your videos and the effort you put into them. However, I encountered some challenges with these “XK - A160 - RTF J3 Skylark Cub - Unbox, Build, Maidens” instructions. It might be helpful to emphasize following directions from start to finish to avoid potential mistakes. This approach could enhance understanding and prevent issues like having to ‘discard’ projects. Your content is valuable, and with clearer guidance, it could be even more effective for viewers.
I like this model very much. But...for an absolutely beginner like me, would You recommend this one, or better starting with the WLtoys Cessna? I´m rather insecure. My place here, close to the seaside, is often quite windy. So, I´m not sure which one is the right model to start with. More heavy or quite lightweight like the little Cessna, perhaps cannot fight against the wind? Thank You in advance for any tipps.
I would NOT get this one as a FIRST plane... Sport Cub 500 amzn.to/36z22Or / bit.ly/3c3Yqqn Mini Trainstar amzn.to/2SHuzxr / bit.ly/2Xqk2Jy Micro Trainstar amzn.to/2QJtfaV / bit.ly/2JW7TUK ....these would be way better options
does anyone know if this is EPO or EPP foam? and if there are any more updates to the rudder problem/fixes? This plane has come down to the $100 range and is the most scale plane by far in this price bracket. I fly over dirt though, so I'm concerned the death spirals would end it a little quicker for me.
Looks great! I am impressed that it looks to have a good quality clevis on the control surfaces and it has better servos - kinda like the eflite umx cessna. I like the real cler canopy and interior too! I have the umx J3 cub and I love it but this company looks like it might compete with horizon in the umx category!
@@BrianPhillipsRC Does it fly as good? You have both I think. I love my umx J3 and it has the AS3X receiver. Gotta give credit to horizon they make models that fly excellent and that is what we all want after all!
Brian, this is my first rc plane I have crashed a few times, but now my plane is on the shelf. When I look for the part I need it's being restocked. Tried to repair it. But a prop shaft just does not like to stay fixed
I'm sorry to hear you're having trouble getting the parts. Have you checked by following the link in our video description and the associated spare parts?
Hi Brian. I just bought one of these and i'm new to the hobby. While building, one of my Wing braces broke. What hole should the rear flaps be at. I know rudder should be outermost hole. Also i have a glue gun. Is this the right type of glue for gluing the plastic braces in ?
Hot glue will be okay, but very heavy... Here's what I'd use for glue... (this is an excerpt from my links in the description...) Kicker amzn.to/2CQf24D CA Med amzn.to/2D0x18i (
@@BrianPhillipsRC Hi Brian. Thanks for the advice on glue. Where should my aileron be set to ? Is aileron on thr rear left wing and rudder rear right looking from behind ?
I moved the rudder and elevator into the middle hole...(I think that's how I did it)...it was a HORRIBLE flyer until I made this change. PLEASE use the middle hole or you'll HATE it.
I moved the rudder to the OUTSIDE HOLE, and that helped a lot. This plane was a huge disappointment, in that it's one of the BEST looking micro scale planes, but it's heavier than it needed ot be, since they used all that clear plastic!!! You can try to get a little nose weight in there, and I BET that would help too, but to be honest...I just wish this one had been better. It was probably one of our first XK's that wasn't phenomenal.
@@BrianPhillipsRC hey guys I just received it as a gift. Always wanted a cub and now after some reading and watching videos I am little disappointed... what do I have to do to make it fly properly? I have moved antena from the back so it sticks out to prevent interference with rods. I have noticed that my gyro is wonky. Sometimes I bind it and it's working sometimes not... no matter how many times I will push the button. And first couple of binds it was fine (I could change between 3g and 6g). I haven't even flown it really ( just one crush after start ) I fly helis and drive rc cars so it's a little new to me. Also noticed that my tail and back wings are not at 90degress out of the box (bad factory job). What can I do to enjoy it like I should ? Thanks in advance. (I would like to keep it stock if possible :))
There's a switch that decided if it's on or off, and you have to see how yours comes, but you don't have to turn on the feature, like when we setup SAFE and AS3X on a Spektrum AR631 in a PNP plane, for example.
I have order this plane but I would like to buy an extra battery for this plane. It is a 7.4v (500mah) what are the dimensions of the battery it comes with so I can make sure it fits in plane.
The real world J3 was actually prone to spinning from mishandled/uncoordinated turns, not much more than similar types but it had the nasty characteristic of not being as easily recovered from a spin despite it's lovable trainer reputation. This tendency is exacerbated on this little replica because of the grossly oversize empenage - aesthetically my only gripe with this bird is the oversize empennage, actually not as necessary as you might think, I often kitbash these micro birds with smaller more scale tails and I haven't had any stability issues as a result of that yet, in fact, I have noticed some dutch roll tendencies on this one in particular because of the massive vertical and rudder, it could be 20% smaller and would have looked much better. This cutie is no major leap in RTF aeronautics but it is nice to see the previous toy brand paying such attention to detail and offering such hobby grade products - it bodes well for the future, most importantly these are affordable. I despise stability systems but on this it's welcome. Mine will get the obligatory tail bash soon and a little foam pilot and I am thinking of fitting it my Nicesky Scout/Decathlon floats with recessed wheels for land ROG's.
No, the sticks are fine and working, the rudder action doesn't happen in regular mode just in stabilization/Gyro. When it's in the air you can't see it happen, it just banks hard and goes down. On the bench after maneuvering (holding by the wingtips) around, left right up down then put it down on the bench and the rudder is locked left but if you move it to another position on the bench it will straighten out. Meaning, whatever position you start out on the bench you would expect it to be the same when you put it back in the same spot but it's NOT. In Gyro it should maintain a level or minimal banking, up, down but not a hard left rudder into a dive! PS, I thought you said Not to use the inside hole, remember LOL, something you mention at the beginning of your Video! ;-) I'll let you know what the seller does for me if anything? Later PS, had to make a new spar and new mount for the front of the wing, one tab broke off during a one wing landing rather than 2 wheels LOL
Use the outside most hole. If I mis-spoke, I'm sorry. You want the LEAST movement of the rudder. I fear yours is getting mechanically bound at the end of the stroke. This will hopefully be better with the linkage in the outside most hole for the least rudder travel.
@@BrianPhillipsRC No, had it in outside hole from the beginning, same problem you had, it's a gyro problem. As I mentioned, Everybody !! Has had the same problem! Well, except for the few that didn't show it in their videos! LOL Cowards. So far I've watched 5 or 6 reviews on this one and all the same. Oh well, I've only had it a few weeks, maybe my letter to the seller (Manufacturer?) will come up with something. The thing is I'm fairly sure the reviewers will fly it a number of times, show it, rate it, as you do but then move on to the next project, and that's understandable, but I'm not reviewing I'm the end-user trying to make it work. I only have my 2 or 3 other Much more expensive planes to go to next using this one as the means of refreshing my flying skills from 40 years ago to avoid crashing the big Buck$. Keep up the good work! C

Just a notation my friend I saw another review about the problem with the rudder and the guy corrected it by slightly cutting the hole where the rear push rods are and made a longer opening because the push rods were rubbing and getting stuck and was not having free movement.. at first he thought it was the transmitter having a problem with the servos so he used and bound another transmitter to the plane and the same problem existed until he made that correction in the holes for the pushrods for the rudder..😊👍👍👍
Sure thing. This CAN happen. I don't think it was the problem we ran into, since we were fortunately able to fix the poor yaw performance by putting the clevis on the outer hole.
The plane is a tale dragger irl on the ground and in the air. Isn’t the planes designed why it turns flat like that. Looks like it’s dragging the tale around some.
Yes, this plane as designed is too heavy and it's tail heavy, which is why it doesn't fly as good as it should. I love XK products, generally, but this one is one of the most beautiful, bad fliers we've flown for them.

I've been watching everyone's videos and thought it might be skidding it's turns with too much rudder and that the gyro was pulling the nose up, causing the stall. I might take the tail wheel springs off too to give the rudder servo a break. Anyway another great video you make flying look so easy👍
Brian, If I told you whether I purchased this plane totally depended on you recommending this aircraft , would you ? I am a newly intermediate flyer ! I have total trust in your judgement !! Would you feel comfortable recommending this plane ?
thankyou for this video! I bought this plane....... But I was disappointed because it is not durable at all. I crashed it and the whole thing cracked!:( Thanks again for your content.....✈🛫🛬 and no it is not durable if you nose dive it
Hi Brian, I watched this video 475 times first hehe and many of your other videos...love your work. I purchased this plane as it looks so good and your review is great. I found the right hole too. Unfortunately first flight I found it very wobbly left to right wing to wing after take off and then did the death spiral and crashed. I had the battery as far forward as it would go. Plane was in 6G mode. I'm gutted as I'm relatively new to rc planes but am already obsessed. I bought the A800 glider first and love it. Also I noticed the rudder moves when I move the ailerons stick, is that normal? Also the rudder moves more left than right. Also what does the high and low button on left actually do to plane? Sorry to ask so many questions, but it's ruining my day...can't work until I sort out my plane. Please help me, my wife thinks I got issues lol....
Yes, rudder is tied to the ailerons with a MIX. This can be normal. High low, how much the control surfaces move when the stick is all the way over, it'll move 100% on HIGH, and maybe 75% on LOW. Flying this plane is NOT easy. The Sport Cub 500 is easy...this is a challenge...that's why I was so hard on it... Plus the RCSaylors gave it a GLOWING total BS review. I want to share my real experience, not blow sunshine up your butt ;) That doesn't do any good for the hobby. In a bit of a hurry, so don't mean to be short with you.... come back with more questions when you're ready. Don't give up. Flying is not "easy" and it takes TIME. You have to do it. You will get there, and you'll be able to fly the worst, crappiest Chinese garbage in only a few short years ;) LOL P.S. @@BrianPhillipsRC Thanks heaps for your reply, I just flied it again and doing basic turns and the plane just spirals to the ground randomly. I think the servo's or reciever board is toy grade rubbish. It is the worst plane which sucks because it was my first rc plane. I also bought the A800 glider and flew it about 6 times then the elevator servo went mid air coming out of a loop and crashed badly. The servo is stuck and doesn't move at all when connected it up at home. I noticed on the A800 and A160 before flight testing the elevator sometimes goes down normally then hardly goes down at all...have you ever noticed that? I don't think I will ever buy XK planes again, they are unreliable. I am already obsessed with the hobby but have 2 planes within 3 months I can't fly. I watched your videos every night. I am gonna buy trusted brands from now on like Hobbyzone. I watched your video on Carbon Cub and I think I will get it, or this - Volantex TrainStar Ascent 747-8 1400mm Wingspan EPO Trainer Aircraft RC Airplane. Is this any good or toy grade, unreliable? @@BrianPhillipsRC Yes RC gave it a glowing BS review, won't be watching him again. Is Volantex the same quality plane/components as Hobbyzone or cheap stuff?
@@BrianPhillipsRC Got some great news for owners of this plane. I positioned the aerial instead of going towards the back of the plane to the front of the plane so it goes under the cockpit. It flies really good now with no glitches. Would be interesting if others have the same success.
This is a beautiful UMX. It looks like it flies as horribly as the Durafly micro Tundra. I tamed the tundra a little by mounting leading edge slats from my UMX Timber. But this Cub just seems like another 1/2 inch or so more wing length would correct things a bit. Hoping eflite will release a scale umx cub someday. Maybe someday see what happen with this HK with Timber slats on it.
This plane isn't a UMX ;) It's an XK product, and it's the worst flying of the XK planes we've reviewed. It can be made to fly OKAY with the rudder authority reduced about as much as you can, then it'll fly. Why they felt the need to mix rudder with ailerons is beyond me. I wanted so much more from this the ONE OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL of the XK planes!!!
This is my least favorite XK product. I was so excited for it. It was funny too, since we got like 5-10 packaged from Banggood, and every time I was all excited it would be THIS, then when it finally cam...no bueno ;(
I think mine was also disconnected, if I remember right. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Creo que el mío también se desconectó, si mal no recuerdo.
Hello Brian,I've recently started watching your videos and I'm enjoying then. I recently bought a balsa wood plane that needs to be finished. Neds a motor, servos and radio. I would like to finish it but not sure what would be best for it. I've tried do some homework but can't to seem to get some solid info. Any help you can offer would be appreciated
I'd love to help, but this part of the hobby is, for me at least, one of the hardest, and more time consuming. Here's what I'd do... Find a plane that's similar in size, and style, then just buy whatever parts are installed in it... ESC, Motor, Servos, and pair it all up with whatever Rx and Tx you prefer. I used to do this with my Grandpa, before he passed away, and we'd spend most of a day getting specs together, and then sourcing it all - it was a LOT of work, but we enjoyed the time we spent together, and I'm grateful we had the time now that he's gone.
@@BrianPhillipsRC I think the root of the issue is the foam. It's too heavy. I took steps to shed weight in the tail of mine. The airplane is too heavy out of the box, and only heavier if simply ballasted to a flyable Cg.
Well hello a again my friend listen could you please do a review on the rage RC ready-to-fly Spirit of st. @@theoztreecrasher2647 I sat my T16 Pro the same was as my other XK planes. The rudder misbehaviour came as a surprise as both A430 and A600 works fine.
@@theoztreecrasher2647 The rudder doesn't get stuck on A600 but it can still tip stall but then you can recover it easily. I gave up on the X160 and gave it to my kids to play with.
I had a lot of trouble with this one, but definitely not bricked in my case. I've had WAY better luck from XK and hope this isn't a sign of "things to come" - unless it's in the arena of looks - it is absolutely beautiful!
@@BrianPhillipsRC I just flew their X430 and it was great but the X160 just had the rudder going crazy. I managed to do one good landing but other than that it was just straight into the ground. It just can't do tight aileron+rudder turns.
When u turn does it tip stall?

Rudder does it ;)
I pulled my hobbyzone champ out of storage and put an upgraded eflite mustang motor with a new crispy gear box after i realized i was never going to get this plane you are showing lol.
SWEET!
I’m in nc u probably too far …it’s always my luck …I’d love to take those a160s off your hands …how good of shape are they ?

Thank you! We try hard, but even if we do our part, sometimes the planes leave us wanting ;)
Wow - you summed all these issue sup very nicely!!!! Thanks John. I too with XK would get this fixed ASAP, since I LOVE their products typically.
@@warmiceUTHi. How did it go with the replacement control board? Did it solve all problems, or? Best regards Jan
Use wire with a hook!
I've watched a couple of videos on this little cub. My impression is that the wing loading is pretty high - landing speed seem pretty high it's certainly not going to float on the breeze.
It is one of our worst XK experiences ;( I was so excited for it too
Its funny that you say the paint job on this is so good since by the time i finished assembling mine the paint was peeling off the fuselage like it got sunburnt...
I wonder if you got a bad one!??!!?
@@BrianPhillipsRC I mean its the cheapest of the cheap so... cant hope for more, just hope it flies!
I want to get this plane but I've seen the
'death spiral' appear in other reviews too and I just feel like I should save my money for something else.
This plane is way nicer than the A800, but it's not as good flying as the Beaver...however, it's WAY more beautiful.
Love this aircraft it seems quite easy to control and very light and docile good buy!!
Only if you use the middle hole!!!!! I crashed this plane about 500,000 times (maybe more like 10, but it felt like more!!!)
I had all on inside hole and it flew without a problem …without landing gear it flew like a madman …no wind could keep it down lol
Good job going through the weird stuffs getting this plane assembled
Thanks! It was a frustrating experience, but I'm so sick and tired of my piers always making everything look soo "easy" and perfect - TOTAL BS!
Absolutely, I bought it and gave up when I saw that it was not as easy, I succeeded to put the elevator without damages but I wonder how many of the buyers started to break something at this point :)

It's been a long time, Emmett, so I can't recall. I'd be lying if I said I touched this plane ever again after filming this review. It's not on my "go to" list of planes to fly. I LOVE the XK lineup, since they bring a high quality flying experience n a budget, but this one just didn't meet my expectations in every arena EXCEPT LOOKS - it was every bit as beautiful as I expected it to be ;)
Just bought this plane. Have heard about all the issues. We shall see, maiden today!
FYI, I used needle nose to pull the servo cables through the cabin, as opposed to directly under the wings, this saved a LOT of headache.
Man, what an incredibly beautiful plane - bummer it flies sooo bad, had the banggood tab opened and ready during the video.
About elerons wire - I do the same.👍

PMSL what ever !
Sport Cub 500 amzn.to/36z22Or / bit.ly/3c3Yqqn
Mini Trainstar amzn.to/2SHuzxr / bit.ly/2Xqk2Jy
Micro Trainstar amzn.to/2QJtfaV / bit.ly/2JW7TUK
....these would be way better options
@@BrianPhillipsRC Thank You Brian ! I´ve ordered the Volantex Mini Trainstar now, cause very affordable. Probably a "bang good decision" ;-) Regards
does anyone know if this is EPO or EPP foam? and if there are any more updates to the rudder problem/fixes? This plane has come down to the $100 range and is the most scale plane by far in this price bracket. I fly over dirt though, so I'm concerned the death spirals would end it a little quicker for me.
I think it's EPP
Im thinking of getting this plane, can it fly slow? Also could I possibly put some bigger wheels on it e.g the umx timber ones
It doesn't fly especially slow. It could receive bigger wheels, but you'll have to make some serious mods to get the UMX Timber Tires to fit.
Hi there, mans thats a beautiful little plane,is there any talk of an improved version coming out, like they did with the wl 124016?thanks..
It is ONLY beautiful. I hate to report. One of the worst flying XK planes to date - huge disappointment ;(
Such a pity,i have ordered eachine mini mustang,my first try at rc planes,im bored with my arrmas, keep up the good videos
Looks great! I am impressed that it looks to have a good quality clevis on the control surfaces and it has better servos - kinda like the eflite umx cessna. I like the real cler canopy and interior too! I have the umx J3 cub and I love it but this company looks like it might compete with horizon in the umx category!
yeah, better looks than HH on this one, but does it fly as good ??????
@@BrianPhillipsRC Does it fly as good? You have both I think. I love my umx J3 and it has the AS3X receiver. Gotta give credit to horizon they make models that fly excellent and that is what we all want after all!
Brian, this is my first rc plane I have crashed a few times, but now my plane is on the shelf. When I look for the part I need
it's being restocked. Tried to repair it. But a prop shaft just does not like to stay fixed
I'm sorry to hear you're having trouble getting the parts. Have you checked by following the link in our video description and the associated spare parts?
How long is the flight autonomy? Thanks.
I don't understand your question. Sorry!

(this is an excerpt from my links in the description...)

@@BrianPhillipsRC Hi Brian. Thanks for the advice on glue. Where should my aileron be set to ? Is aileron on thr rear left wing and rudder rear right looking from behind ?
Please let me know
How to identify the low battery during flying time
hello Brian did you move the elevator and ailerons to the out side hole on horns like the rudder ?
I moved the rudder and elevator into the middle hole...(I think that's how I did it)...it was a HORRIBLE flyer until I made this change. PLEASE use the middle hole or you'll HATE it.
That's a really nice little airplane might buy one
If you do, please make sure you put the linkage in the OUTSIDE MOST HOLE on the RUDDER or you'll be very annoyed ;)
Did you put all the surfaces in the outer hole??
Hi mate do u have trouble with tip stalling if so how do u fix it??????
I moved the rudder to the OUTSIDE HOLE, and that helped a lot. This plane was a huge disappointment, in that it's one of the BEST looking micro scale planes, but it's heavier than it needed ot be, since they used all that clear plastic!!!
You can try to get a little nose weight in there, and I BET that would help too, but to be honest...I just wish this one had been better. It was probably one of our first XK's that wasn't phenomenal.
Yo tengo esa avioneta. ahora solo me falta la casa con ese jardin tan grande.
У него есть режим закрылок для посадки? что бы он медленно планировал?
Beautiful
Thank you, but wish it flew as good as it looked. This is a bad flying XK - something we VERY RARELY SEE.
This plane is fun in the snow, I made skis for it!
Awesome! I wanted this plane to fly as good as every other XK, but I was let down - LITERALLY - LOL, but after some tweaks, she flies ;)
Thansk for sharing. Some great insights.
Glad you enjoyed it! This plane is hopefully a nuance of the XK lineup. It's gorgeous, but doesn't perform as well as others in their offerings.
looks great
It does!
For sure theoztreecrasher ;)
Is the gyro on when you first get it or isn't it
There's a switch that decided if it's on or off, and you have to see how yours comes, but you don't have to turn on the feature, like when we setup SAFE and AS3X on a Spektrum AR631 in a PNP plane, for example.
This or Sport Cub S , is better for beginners ?

Great job and Info, thank you.
Thanks G Bro!
I have order this plane but I would like to buy an extra battery for this plane. It is a 7.4v (500mah) what are the dimensions of the battery it comes with so I can make sure it fits in plane.
60mm long X 14mm wide (maybe 15mm) X 17mm tall. But you can always just ram it in if it's a bit bigger ;)
You need to fly the plane into the landing, you're dropping it last minute, fly her down a glide path smooth then reduce throttle on touch down 🙏👍
This plane flies like a rock. I've greased many, many landings with cubs of all sizes, but not this plane - LOL
@@BrianPhillipsRC Damn it, I am not buying this anymore 🙏 I was gonna get one now I'm gonna get the little Trojan 👍 A210 looks real CHUNKY 😊🇬🇧❤️🇺🇸
Maybe you can bind it to the T8sg and see how it does. Just a guess.
I did....moderate improvement, but not night and day, like some other planes we've done in the past.
Well said ;)
Ooo. I like the plane cool
yeah, but does it fly great????
Anybody else want to really, REALLY see the outtakes? :-)
Sorry Rick...I was all annoyed with the crashing....
I made the same sdjustment to mine snd hsvent crsshed it yet.I reslly like this plsne.
Wish the directions would have covered this detail ;)
Hi Brian, can you make a playlist with all the banggood RC airplanes (especially best RTF EPP airplanes that are under $100)? Thanks!
You are reading my mind. We've been talking about doing that lately. I should get on with it.
Check back soon. I might just do that WC.
One wing landings VS two wheel landings will get you ever time - LOL ;)

Looks better than the Sport Cub S
Dave - Well yeah, but it's also too heavy :(
theoztreecrasher - Not sure if I'd say "high class"..... LOL

I'm not seeing where it's listed as a 5 channel, but it seems to be 4 to me as well...

The Sport cub S2 is the easiest one to fly. You can go so unbelievable slow and with auto level is like driving a car.
@@SunriseRCAviator This is what I'm flying and learning on. The one big negative for me is how often I need to replace the brushed motor. I'd pay more and be more pleased with the cub S2 if it came with a longer lasting brushless motor.
This video give me hope and a chance that I won't immediately crash mine when it finally arrives. I've been watching everyone's videos and thought it might be skidding it's turns with too much rudder and that the gyro was pulling the nose up, causing the stall. I might take the tail wheel springs off too to give the rudder servo a break. Anyway another great video you make flying look so easy👍
Make sure you put the linkage on the OUTSIDE MOST HOLE on the RUDDER or you'll be very annoyed ;)

thankyou for this video! I bought this plane....... But I was disappointed because it is not durable at all. I crashed it and the whole thing cracked!:( Thanks again for your content.....✈🛫🛬 and no it is not durable if you nose dive it
I nose dived mine like 6-8 times, but only had minor damage (cracked cowl, and broken decorative motor)...but I hit grass each time, I guess...
You will get there, and you'll be able to fly the worst, crappiest Chinese garbage in only a few short years ;) LOL
P.S. If you want a better experience, seriously consider one of these... more money, but WAY better...

@@BrianPhillipsRC 😂
The most unflyable and most beautiful plane from XK.
Sounds like a real combination of the Beauty and the Beast 😂
should i buy?
No. This one is one of the worst XK planes I've ever done. Huge disappointment. Sorry!
Wish Horizon Hobby would re-release their J3 Cub - it was AWESOME!
@@BrianPhillipsRC just bought the p-51 mustang 750mm, is it good? :)
I gave mine away. I just couldn’t get it to fly.
This is my least favorite XK product. I was so excited for it. It was funny too, since we got like 5-10 packaged from Banggood, and every time I was all excited it would be THIS, then when it finally cam...no bueno ;(
nice
Thanks
Me vino con el timón de cola suelto
I think mine was also disconnected, if I remember right.

Creo que el mío también se desconectó, si mal no recuerdo.
It looks like a yellow piper clipper😂
I like it!
Flies like it has an aft cg.
it is, and hard to adjust with the battery setup...not good on XK for this one ;(
@@BrianPhillipsRC
I think the root of the issue is the foam.
Louis aircraft can you do a review on that plane because I'm thinking about getting it because it seems this yellow Cub has quite a few problems.. will you do that for us out here this is a new subscriber and I'm looking for my first rc plane in this size or maybe a little bigger but I truly like that Spirit of st. Louis airplane in would like you to do a review on it...it is a 3 channel plane uses only the rudder and elevators.to go up and down and rudder to turn left and right...
I'd love to review it, but we don't know who sells it.
It's Amazing Somethimes How Much Of A Reaction That You'll Get By Rammin It In The Wrong Hole! LOL
True....TOTALLY true.
You got any NIO?
@@BrianPhillipsRC ? I Haven't Had Any Reactions In Years? That's Mostly Why I'm Soo Damned Grumpy! LMAO
Keep it in your pants uncle john.
Why don't you fly it on a jumper and see if there is a difference
I did, and it's not a huge improvement, only minimal for some reason.
theoztreecrasher I tend to agree with you on this one...the Jumper wasn't a big improvement....but there WAS an improvement.
No difference to me with or without a Jumper TX.
In three flights I managed to brick mine. This was the worst plane I've ever tried.
It just can't do tight aileron+rudder turns.
so big
That's what she said! ;)
Man I got this plane for $30 bucks no cap.. kinda hard to fly to be honest
