Scott was in Velvet Revolver towards the end of his spiral with drug addiction, the song "Fall to Pieces" showcases that perfectly.Very deep. R.I.P Scott.
STP is one of the best bands out of the 90’s. RIP Scott Weiland. His voice was one of a kind, the band made incredible music. Interstate Love Song is awesome
'Dead and Bloated' is probably my favorite STP anthem. It's raw and visceral. It is truly a song from the gut. A close second is 'Sex Type Thing.' They were a little harder than grunge. Like so many others- Staley, Cobain, Cornell- Weiland was taken way too soon.
Oh baby, STP!!! About time you revisited them! (Six months??) So many songs to check out! My personal fave is "Crackerman", followed by "Interstate Love Song", "Trippin' On a Hole in a Pape Heart", and "Sour Girl". RIP Scott Weiland, another great gone too soon.
According to Wiki, the meaning of the song is indeed about being stuck in the same situation over and over again. In Scott's case, it was his heroin addiction. The funny story behind the main lyric comes from when he was a kid and his parents put The Eagles' "Life in the Fast Lane" on, and he thought they were singing "Flies in the Vaseline".
It's grunge, well kinda. Same timeline same festivals. He sang with Velvet Revolver , à super band of rock gods. Velvet Revolver was an American hard rock supergroup consisting of Guns N' Roses members Slash, Duff McKagan and Matt Sorum, alongside Dave Kushner formerly of punk band Wasted Youth, and Scott Weiland formerly of Stone Temple Pilots
@@gabrielledormuth4634 They were lumped in with grunge at the time (pretty much everything post hair metal/"Smells Like Teen Spirit" breakout of the early nineties was); whether or not they should have been is another matter (in the first place, what even is grunge - sound, look, from Seattle?) Most of the bands that were considered grunge had very little in common, outside of the time they hit mainstream.
@Usernamesarewack Only a very small minority of astute people didn't arbitrarily categorize everyone; the overwhelming majority (i.e., mainstream media, most radio stations, MTV, most of the music industry, and most regular people) lumped all of these bands that came out in the early nineties (and appeared to have somewhat similar styles and appearance) as grunge. This started to change when the so-called Nu Metal (bands like Linkin Park, Korn, etc.) started emerging in the mid nineties. Seattle birthed the grunge movement, but it wasn't the sole criteria for it (just like all punk bands did not originate in the U.K., which is where it more or less started).
The first album was definitely grunge. But I think they were branching out with ‘Purple.’ And even more so with ‘Tiny Music.’ They really did a good job creating their own sound. And yeah drugs influenced their creativity. Even the music video is all over the place.
STP has a great library. They hit the scene around the same time Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Alice In Chains. Scott Weiland was a very very gifted frontman. His death was very predictable but tragic nonetheless. (He publicly battled addiction for years).
I saw STP in concert about 20 years ago with Scott Wieland and they were incredible. Amazing voice and and amazing band of musicians. Just one popular rocking song after another. Incredible show. I saw them a few years ago with their new lead singer and they are still great. The leader singer is like a Wieland clone in looks, moves and voice and he nails it.
Dean DeLeo is a great guitar player. Wrote really cool riffs and his lead phrasing and runs were top notch. The DeLeo brothers wrote some heavy tunes with catchy hooks.
Scott Weiland had such a great voice, IMHO he is in the same league as Layne Staley and Chris Cornell. I consider this to be grunge, but others may think differently. You need to hear "Sour Girl" by Stone Temple Pilots and "Fall to Pieces" by Velvet Revolver. This was fairly early in his career, his work with Velvet Revolver was towards the end of his life. You will be able to see the toll that heroin took on him.
She hit on it right there about the drug addiction, alcoholism, Scott Wieland and Layne Staley had the same problem, as well as Nikki Sixx and Slash. Many struggled with herion addiction and alcohol too. So much talent wasted.
I knew Scott Weiland.. Hurt my ❤️ when he died.. My friend Jeff has now taken over singing duties for the band. STP is one of my all time favorite bands. The writing, the music, the emotional honesty, incredible! Glad you guys covered this one. 🙌
Scott Weiland was the original singer of Stone Temple Pilots... Sadly, he passed away in 2015 (R.I.P. 😪) Weiland recorded 2 albums w/ Velvet Revolver, featuring Guns N' Roses members Slash (lead guitar), Duff McKagan (bass) & Matt Sorum (drums)... He was such a talented singer/songwriter who had addiction issues that finally took his life...
Rob you are very perceptive you're exactly right about this song and STP is grunge but its music is veiled by a pop veneer, and like Vaseline and other compositions Scott weiland's words communicate a mind struggling between light and darkness. This song deals with Scott Weiland's descent into drug addiction. At the time, he was doing his best to hide it from his bandmates and his girlfriend, but he knew he was turning into a junkie, a condition exacerbate by the success of STP's first album, Core When he sings here about searching and going blind, it relates to the cycle he started when he became an addict. In his autobiography, Weiland said the song is about "being stuck in the same situation over and over again," adding, "It's about me becoming a junkie."
How many of you out there just close your eyes and can lip sing all the words for this song while you remember back in high-school chillin out to this classic tune
This group is OG Grunge. I was in high school when Grunge hit the scene and I loved STP! They helped sing my high school soundtrack. On their first album Core the first song is called Dead and Bloated and it’s a song that you put on and turn the radio all the way up and when it drops it will cause you to get hyped like you wouldn’t believe. The lead singer’s name is Scott Weiland and he passed in 2015 of a drug overdose. RIP. Scary to think about of the grunge groups like Stone Temple Pilots, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Alice In Chains, Nirvana all have had tragedies with someone in the band. Nirvana’s Kurt Cobain by suicide, STO Scott Weiland drug overdose, Layne Staley of Alice In Chains, Chris Cornell of Soundgarden. The angst is there in their music.
The lead singer, Scott Weiland struggled with addiction for many years, before he overdosed and died several years ago. I think your analysis of the lyrics was really spot on. He was a brilliant performer who just couldn't figure out how to keep drugs out of his life.
Grunge is an alternative rock genre and subculture which emerged during the late-1980s & into the 90's in the U.S. state of Washington, particularly in Seattle. Grunge fuses elements of punk rock and heavy metal. Top Grunge bands are Nirvana, Alice in Chains, S.T.P., Pearl Jam. Soundgarden, and Smashing Pumpkins to name a few
I would say your analysis of the lyrics is pretty dang close, near spot on, if not correct! Good job on the analysis. I tend to focus on music first then lyrics second, so it always takes me a while to get a song's message. These guys were huge in the grunge era, and in my top 3 bands of that era. Almost anything from their first 2 albums really gives you a good feel for what they're about and really not a bad song on any of those albums. I see you did Plush the first time, which was their biggest hit, so I would suggest probably their 2nd biggest which is "Interstate Love Song", which is a bit of a softer side of them, but still rocking. I can recommend so many other songs like "Dead and Bloated", "Wicked Garden", "Unglued", and "Sex Type Thing" are the first to come to mind. Vaseline is one of my favorites of theirs so this was quite a treat to see a reaction video from you on!
STP is considered grunge and having been a teenager at the time I always put them in that category as well. But listening to them now I think they, like The Smashing Pumpkins, were more grunge-adjacent. Which is not a thing, but even The Smashing Pumpkins didn’t consider themselves grunge. They were all part of the same scene, though. And, behind Smashing Pumpkins, STP was probably my favorite band back then. This album, Purple, was the first one I bought when I finally made enough money to buy a cheap stereo for my room with a CD player. And it’s a great album. “Interstate Love Song” is my personal favorite followed by “Big Empty.” To this day, I hear the opening chords of “Interstate Love Song” and am back in the room I shared with my foster sister, with its gold shag carpet, getting ready for school in front of our huge mirror with this CD playing.
Yeah I can see how both bands didn’t entirely fit into he term grunge. They were of the same time period and intertwined, but their sound was slightly different. I think the term alternative hard rock suits them better although STP first album is as close to grunge as you can get without calling it grunge.
That dance they were doing at the beginning is called "Schuhplatler Folk Dancing" from Bavaria and Southern Germany, Austria and German speaking regions of Northern Italy. 🤗
Almost every rock group I like can be classified as alternative metal. It's kinda hard to describe the genre because it has so many influences from different styles of rock. The best way to describe it would be by the bands. Alien Ant Farm, Linkin Park, Evanescence, Korn, Filter, Incubus, Stone Temple Pilots, these can all be considered alternative metal. Most of these are in heavy rotation in my Spotify playlist. For more STP, I'd suggest Wicked Garden Seven Caged Tigers Lady Picture Show Sex Type Thing Interstate Love Song Trippin On a hole In A Paper Heart Sour Girl ( I like the video for this one. It stars SMG aka Buffy ) Bang Bang Baby Big Empty
I love your hair Amber. I was a lead singer for over 25 years.I still sing from time to time, but this was one of my favorites to sing.Incredible bincredible band the Delio brothers are so phenomenal in God rest his soul,,,Scott Weiland
Interstate Love Song is widely considered their best work so definitely add that to the must do list. Sour Girl, Trippin' On A Hole In A Paper Heart, Wicked Garden, Sex Type Thing, Days Of The Week, Lady Picture Show are all person favorites as well.
It cracks me up when i watch your vid of doing Stone Temple Pilots - Plush and J mentioning that is exactly the sound he's looking for and really enjoyed it. And then cue this song up and you can't remember who this is time to buy that notepad! Appreciate you guys and keep rockin'! 💞🎶
You two are a breath of fresh air!!For your Christmas songs how about The Prayer by Celine Dion and Andrea Bocelli (he is an opera singer). It is so so beautiful 🙏
STP still remains one of my favorite groups of all time; they were initially labeled as grunge, but their sound expanded with each album. A personal favorite from them is called "And So I Know"; it's a mellow, bossa Nova tinged track that's, like, perfect for moonlit drives...lol. They have a lot of killer songs that never blew up...
I was always a fan of Sour Girl. Different to a lot of their other stuff. The clip has Sarah Michelle Gellar (who you might know from the 90s/00s show Buffy) in it.
Piece of pie, wicked garden, dead and bloated. Love it!!!! And he was such a great front man. Addiction has robbed us of so many great artists and songs we will never get to hear.
“Interstate Love Song” and “Trippin’ on a Hole in a Paper Heart,” please! Both are amazing, with totally different feels to them, and “Trippin’…” is blistering. Thank you!
Queensryche ( Take Hold Of The Flame ) is a must. His voice is so high it will knock you out of your chair. And the drummer does like a triple beat. Never seen that before. You will love it. 80s band.
I would say they're consideried Grunge. I think the song you reacted to was 'Plush' but I'm not sure. You've gotta do 'Interstate Love Song' by them and I think you'd like their 'Sour Girl'. Also, check out 'Fall To Pieces' by Velvet Revolver (the Singer, Scort Weiland with members of Guns N' Roses).
Great song, great review. Been hearing the song for years, but never saw the video. Y'all made some astute observations. Well done. Keep up the good work.
Awesome reaction! Loved STP from my high school days. Reminds me of when I used to try and sing this on Rockband. "Creep," "Big Empty" and "Sour Girl" are the main 3 songs I'd recommend if you're ever feeling sentimental.
Interstate Love Song. Without question is the 'everyone loves this song' of all of their portfolio, but this was a tremendous band for quite some time. A LOT of great tracks.
One of my all-time favorite bands. Grunge or hard rock. You really can't go wrong with calling them an alternative band. So many good songs. Please do "Wicked Garden." RIP Scott Weiland.
For Female Friday: Ronnie Spector - ‘Be My Baby’ Bette Midler - ‘From a Distance’ Toni Braxton - ‘Un-Break My Heart’ Roberta Flack - ‘First Time Ever I Saw Your Face’ Other notables: Christopher Cross - ‘Sailing,’ Kayne Brown - ‘Worship You,’ Kool and The Gang - ‘Celebration,’ Dan Fogelberg - ‘Same Old Lang Syne’ Luther Vandross - ‘Dance With My Father’
Stone Temple Pilots has so many many AMAZING songs. Theres Sex Type Thing, Interstate Love Song, Plush, Down, Big Empty, Unglued, Atlanta, and the list goes on and on....
Scott Weiland was the Lead Singer and this was considered Alternative Rock, Rock and Grunge.. all of the above.. This was one of the biggest bands of the 90s.. Scott was later in the band Velvet Revolver. Interstate Love Song, Plush and Sour Girl are some of their other great songs..
It is grunge! And yes exactly! Flies in the Vaseline we are, sometimes it blows my mind, keep getting stuck here all the time! Is an actual lyric in the song!
It’s Grunge or post grunge I guess is what label they slapped on it at the time STP a Southern Cal band it blended very well with the grunge sound of the early 90s ! Scott Weiland the lead singer who is already passed R.I.P.
My son and I spent an entire summer going to Rock Festivals. They were at one of them along with so many great artists. I think it 2006, best summer ever. 😊❤️
Saw them back in 96 in Irvine CA, they were awesome, check out their songs, meat plow, kitchenware and candy bars, and a Led Zeppelin cover they did called Dancing Days
Try "Interstate Love Song"... I think it best showcases the band's talent.
Truth be told, the first two albums in their entirety are just masterpieces, but the purple album in particular.
Agreed!
Good choice, I would also recommend Sour Girl.
My fave STP song!
One of my favorite guitar riffs of all time. I remember feeling so cool when I learned to play it when I was 14.
Scott was in Velvet Revolver towards the end of his spiral with drug addiction, the song "Fall to Pieces" showcases that perfectly.Very deep. R.I.P Scott.
YES!!! Fall to Pieces is a MUST!!!!!
GREAT song!! ❤️
I came to the comments to say the same. Velvet Revolver is imperative. Scott plus Slash is rock gold.
Yes yes yes to fall to pieces
Fall to pieces was written by guitarist Slash
I recommend checking out "Naked Sunday", "Wicked Garden", "Big Empty", and "Interstate Love Song"...all great tracks by Stone Temple Pilots.
Interstate Love Song us definitely my favorite song by them.

"Where the River Goes" tops that category for me.
Piece of Pie is their heaviest and best song

"Two times and it has rendered me
Punch drunk and without bail..." -Always loved that. LOVE this band. RIP SCOTT...
Scott Weiland. He later went on to be the frontman for Velvet Revolver, which is basically Guns and Roses w/out Axel Rose. He’s so great!! RIP Scott!
Sour Girl is a great song too, the video is amazing...and its Alternative Rock
Greatest vocalist ever. R I P Scott.
Stone Temple Pilots has so many many AMAZING songs. Theres Sex Type Thing, Interstate Love Song, Plush, Down, Big Empty, Unglued, Atlanta, and the list goes on and on....
RIP Scott Weiland🙏 that's the lead singers name.
GRUNGE/ROCK
One of my all-time favorite bands. They have such excellent, great music.
Sour Girl off of the album No.4 will always be one of my favorite songs.
This is another of the few 90s rock bands I got into back then. Great band.
Saw STP in September in Detroit area with their new singer from Detroit area; they were really good. I was in front row, got amazing video and pics.
Loved STP. I used to do my workout to their album, it kept you rockin'. Gone too soon...sad....
Vasoline.....Really Really great song.
"Interstate Love Song "
....definitely needs to be the next STP reaction...
I love STP. They were the first CD I bought, when migrating over from cassettes. So many good songs that hit at the soul level.
Ok, I liked this video even before I watched it. STP is the bomb! There are so many good songs. RIP Scott Weiland (lead singer).
This is such a killer song!! Great riff, great energy!!! My favorite of theirs!! 😃
I love how you guys remind of old school music I have not thought about in a while. Cheers 🍺
Plush is an amazing song by STP
My son and I spent an entire summer going to Rock Festivals. They were at one of them along with so many great artists. I think it 2006, best summer ever. 😊❤️
A really great one to react to by STP after this one is Sour Girl. The vibe in that one is incredible and the video features evil Teletubbies!
It is alternative metal. Probably my all time favorite metal. His name was Scott Weiland.
Not at all metal. STP was alternative rock originally labeled grunge. Alice is Chains and Soundgarden were alt metal labeled grunge.
Saw them back in 96 in Irvine CA, they were awesome, check out their songs, meat plow, kitchenware and candy bars, and a Led Zeppelin cover they did called Dancing Days
