I love this film and the Robin Williams fantastic as always, R.I.P. but seriously a movie with just Dustin Hoffman as Captain Hook going pirate related adventures or just sitting around his room playing with that miniature ship. ID WATCH THE F*CK OUTTA THAT!
This movie being titled “Hook” was brilliant. Not “Return to Neverland” or anything centered around that. The truth is, Captain Hook is the main character here. He represents what Peter Pan really is. He may be in an adult body, but Hook is very much a child who just wanted attention from parents, like Peter. Peter decided to grow up and move on, even becoming a father, but Hook stayed in Neverland simply desiring more adventure. He is the real Peter Pan because he refused to grow up. When he dies, he even cries out for his “mommy.” In essence, this entire movie is about facing life instead of hiding in a fairytale world. Hook is the boy who has lost touch with reality because he runs from his problems, and Peter is the boy who faces his own challenges. Everyone has to grow up sometime. But not Hook. He stayed the way he was, constantly in fear of death coming closer and closer. He even stayed “I hate living in this flawed body.” He was afraid of growing up and growing old. Peter Pan, a 10-year-old, is the only one who made him feel like a child again. So without him, Hook grew depressed because he had to face reality. The reality is, without Pan, there is no childish adventure. You have to grow up. Hook would rather die…yet, because that is his fear, he has Smee stop him right before he commits suicide. Then, his mind snaps back into his fantasy world, as he blames SMEE and asks Smee if he is some sort of sadist 😂. That’s something only a child would do, and Smee knows it. That’s why Smee, in order to cheer Hook up, asks him what? If he wants to PLAY with his TOY ships! Smee has to treat Hook like a child. Like he is Alfred to a spoiled brat Bruce Wayne. Hook is the real Pan!
"This is it. Don't try to stop me this time Smee. Don't try to stop me this time Smee. Don't you dare try to stop me this time Smee, try to stop me. Smee! You better get up off your ass. GET OVER HERE SMEE! STOP ME, THIS IS NOT A JOKE. I'M COMMITTING SUICIDE!" My favorite part in this entire movie.
Same, it was last year I watch it. As I've grown up Hook I see it differently then as a kid, seeing it as just an adventure film not really understanding or listening to the conversation only the features what was going on. Pan yes we have that childlike in us even as we are adults, however we can understand hook. It's like Gaston from beauty and the beauty, not my film but the character has that same dilemma sitting next to the fire thinking what now? Wants more out of life, a midlife crisis, would even go great lengths to get that moment to leap in danger then stranded as he feels. Its put as comdey but we got more from hook, interesting character.
For 21 years I could not recognize Dustin Hoffman in character as Hook. When he smiles after saying, "My life is over :)" there he is. Oh, I got chills.
The scripting was brilliant, the acting superb, the story near seamless. Why does this movie have such negative reviews?? It always stood out to me as a kid, and it still does today.

I always thought he said "Don't ever _frighten_ me like that again" but now I am not sure. Some sources (like the CC on this clip) say "fight" and some say "frighten".
It's "frighten".....because he was scared Smee was actually going to let him go through with killing himself, even though that's supposed to be something he has more control of himself than Smee does. That's the joke.
Two sides of the same coin eh? They both want adventure and go about different ways of seeking it. There's almost something to be said of Peter Pan returning to Neverland and becoming Hook in the distant future. Could be a dope movie.
Dustin Hoffman said him and Bob Hoskins decided to portray Hook and See as an old married gay couple and Steve Speilberg got tired of trying to stop them so he told them to just go overboard with it
Indeed. What makes it so funny is that when you think about it, this scene is quite relatable. There's always at least one moment in our lives where we become so frustrated to the point of wanting to die just to get away from it all but ultimately we don't for many reasons, specifically the knowledge that it'll never really solve anything. It's kind of like an emotional phase we go through in a mid-life crisis, overreacting somewhat because you feel as though you've run into a dead end.

@@arkwill14 I thought it 'fight me', like the CC says.
GOOD FORM!
Not good enough
More like BAD FORM! Smee didn't even make a move until Hook shouted at him! XD
@@ValkyrieDaisy95 he is a sadist after all

Death is the only great adventure I have left, Smee.
Rip smee, aka Bob Hoskins :(
1:20 I've always wanted something like that when I was younger....
I'm 14, yet I still want one....
"Where you goin'?!...Ooh, are you gettin' dramatic?!!"
HooK: "Death is the only great adventure here."
later on:
Pan: "Death would be a great adeventure."
Two sides of the same coin eh? They both want adventure and go about different ways of seeking it. There's almost something to be said of Peter Pan returning to Neverland and becoming Hook in the distant future. Could be a dope movie.
1:30 "Oh not again" -Smee
OMG. Smee and Peter Pan are both dead. UGH :(
Noooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!
And Wendy Darling
No, Wendy is still alive.
Watching this as an adult makes me realize that is an Oscar-worthy performance from Dustin Hoffman. He is amazing
Dustin Hoffman said him and Bob Hoskins decided to portray Hook and See as an old married gay couple and Steve Speilberg got tired of trying to stop them so he told them to just go overboard with it
Dustin Hoffman's greatest performance.
He coudn't find a better actor for captain Hook (and perhaps Smee too). Great acting, sublime script. Nice scene decoration too. The good old days!
HAH! He gave him a big kiss! These two were so great together....R.I.P. Bob.
Wanting to die, yet not quite ready to die. I don't envy your conundrum, Captain.
I can relate to it though.
@@calliphMe too. 😅
Adulthood in one sentence- LOL! :)
2:06 *"What are you, some kind of a sadist?" I can't believe this was considered a kids film LOL*
I mean in the original novel Pan apparently killed off some lost boys after they started growing older so...
Dustin Hoffman playing Hook, is one of his best performances ever, & he should of had awards for his portrayal.
Funniest. Suicide attempt. EVER.
@@ajcsorny5709Does that include suffering under herpetophobia, having a hook for a left hand and waging war against a eternally youthful 10 year old?
@@criminallyautistic8372 Probably not, but then again, this man's clearly nuts
What gets me about this scene is that entire table of food makes me hungry.
This and the food fight scene
"don't you DARE try to stop me Smee, try to stop me"
LOL the way he just swaps from the negative to the positive without missing a beat in the same sentence is brilliant!
OR Positive to Negative depending on how you look at it... Because he was positive he wanted to do it before. XD
don't try to stop me this time smee
+Luke Spillman try to stop me.
+Juan Potgieter Smee you better got off your arse and get over hear Smee!
This. I love seeing more of this in UA-cam comment sections.
im committing suicide and you're not stopping me. Im committing suicide and you're not stopping me. (youre stopping me.) (smee.) (smee.) (im committing suicide) (stop me smee)
@@LtsaurusRex STOP ME, THIS IS NOT A JOKE! I'M COMMITTING SUICIDE!

Bob Hoskins and Dustin Hoffman were simply brilliant in these roles!

"Smee don't dare try to stop me. Smee don't you DARE try to stop me. Smee, try to stop me. " lol
This and the 'why parents hate their children' speech are my two favorite Captain Hook scenes from this great movie. "I want a potty. I want a cookie. He took my teddy. Me. Me. Me. Me. Mine. Mine. Mine. Mine. Now, now..now...now**sharp intake of breath** :D
I don't think Jude law can top hook.
Exactly. Not even Isaacs. THIS is Hook.
I think that was Hook reacting to the Peter Pan and Wendy trailer.
I love all the food in this movie!!
OMG yes! Those bowls of blue, red and green slop at the Lost Boys' imaginary feast. I don't know what the fuck those were, but I want me some!

Years later I still find myself going, "That's Dustin Hoffman? Seriously, that's Dustin Hoffman? And that's Eddie Valiant from Who Framed Roger Rabbit? Damn! That's awesome!"
These two were marvelous as Hook and Smee, they fit the roles so perfectly.
I never knew for years that it was Dustin Hoffman. Saw the movie sphere and was like "damn his range is incredible! "
I was today years old when I found out Hook was played by Dustin Hoffman. The costume masked him well. Holy fuck.
docdave15 Wait, Bob Hoskins was in Who Framed Roger Rabbit?! And Dean Cundey shot that film and Hook! Everything is connected!
Honestly Hook is such a mood
Another great little detail is that Smee has to have a bite of all of Hook's food because of how paranoid the Captain has become.
Funny thing is that when I was a kid watching this I had no idea wtf was going on, I just found it funny that Hook said ‘arse’.
2:10 Hm, didn’t know Hook was a millennial
"This is not a joke im commiting suicide!"
XD He is such a good actor I loved him as Captain Hook
I love that fancy way he says "Sewicide"
