An advice I follow when I do tournaments, is, don't have a negative vibe when playing in the group! Meaning, don't get visibly frustrated and kick things etc. It'll just bring the mood down for everyone. Be happy and positive and give other players compliments when they throw good shots! :)

You dont have to be positive, you can be neutral as well. But complimenting a good throw is imo never wrong.

I think the best tip I ever got was play within my own goals. Sometimes you get on a card and you’re trying to match what they’re doing. If you are beginner this will only lead to frustration. Just know your game, your goals and stay within those. Push yourself for sure but don’t get outside your own game.

I see some comments that touch upon this, managing expectations. For me, I started to measure my throws against the best I had done before. So while I did not get inte the trap of comparing myself to other (much better) players I still lost enjoyment from being in a not good mindset. Because if I made a hard putt from a distance I had done before it was expected of me, if I missed I got dissapointed.
My way is to look at every throw as something I really focus on without judgment, good or bad, and just focus on how it feels to do it. It's easy to get distracted of course and I'm not totally there every throw but it's a nice goal for me.

I think the most important tip is to have as many beers with you that there is baskets in your course. At least in Finland thats most important thing that noobs forget and at the last baskets starts asking for your beers. So having couple extras too is not a bad idea😁

Great job breaking down a good way to "Have Fun" during a tournament. Only thing I would add is, at least for the first few tournaments you play, don't think about playing against the other people in your division as much as you think about playing against your self and trying to play (score) better than you have before. While at the same time not taking any of it too seriously. Taking anything on the course too seriously will cause you to NOT have fun.

  • @BadlyBentPub

Okay, you've inspired me to sign up for my first tournament! Great video as always!
I actually wrote "breathe" inside the rim of every one of my discs for the same reason - to take that extra couple of seconds to centre myself before a throw.
Also great advice that helped me: my brother told me about a Volvo Ocean Race sailing Captain who, when somebody screwed up or something went wrong would just say "From here on", meaning basically 'yeah, that sucked, but forget about it and focus on the present'.
Can't wait to see the footage from your tournament!

I make sure I have a good meal before a tournament. Make sure you have enough water to stay hydrated and always bring snacks to keep your energy level up, I have a cart so I always have an umbrella and a rain jacket with me. Fun is #1 in my book, no matter what my score is! Everything is a learning experience and even in tournaments where I don’t do so great I still value the experience I have! A tournament is just a self test to measure yourself against the course and to show you your strengths and your weaknesses. I also value the people on the card! Met some great people and made some friendships!

Tip for breaking down the hole if you are not that accurate: Analyze and memorize the parts of the hole, where you DON'T want to throw into. OBs (obv.) but also thick rough, or slopes you will have an uncomfortable stance on. Then choose your disc and throw accordingly, to make landing in those zones unlikely.

    • @elguero9279
      @elguero9279 2 роки тому

Absolutely. Also it's good to decide which holes to "attack". Holes you feel confident to go and get the birdie. And then the other holes, just focus on landing in the fairway and collecting pars. If a bad tee shot happens just pitch out to the fairway and take your bogey. Basically everything is about keeping your ego in check haha

Having realistic expectations, for example, playing a Hole brings also more fun!
I am a Lefty and my Sidearms only goes 90-100m accurately. So on a Hole 120m bent to the left i play for Par with a 80m Sidearm and a simple layup, rather then throwing a tough Anhyzer.
Score on „your“ Holes and play save on others and still shoot -5 f.e.! This is fun! Thanks for your content guys! Even i as a experienced tournament player from Germany can enjoy it, take something from it and rethink my game as a 965 rated player. Keep grinding with fun!

On the breaking down a hole thing: Identify the miss, so even though you are not going to land exactly in that spot that you have "broken down" as the ideal one, know that if you miss it you will miss it on the correct side, for example, if there's OB at 80m and to the left, make sure you throw a disc that you at your max can throw 75m and that always finishes right for you, and if you miss the angle, it will go even more right.

The first tip here about having a plan, the thing about that is, like Mike Tyson said: "Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the face". Ricky Wysocki said if you don't attack the fairways, the fairways attack you. Always have a plan for the birdie and attack it off the tee. Continue until the course punches you in the face. Then scramble.

I use a mantra before many shots: “me, my disc, the basket”. Helps me to focus and block out thoughts, the others (what do they think of me) and most important maybe; the trees. If you focus is on “not hitting the tree”, then you hit it. “Me, my disc and basket” helps a lot to hit that line I want.

I’ve always said it as “Don’t take advice from someone you wouldn’t trade places with.”
Also, I always bring beers. During or after is up to you.

Remember to enjoy the beautifull or amazing throws like awesome long annies (the most beautifull throw in disc golf I think)
And its allowed to enjoy of other players nice shots as well. This is what brings up the good spirit to all group 😎

Keep happy and smiling is also good. It makes other players feel good and that can be contatinous, like a virus you know… You start to feel happier and more relaxed because other feel happy and relaxed. Just because you were smiling!
