    What the two keep missing, is Omashu isn't just a walled city. It's an entire walled part of the country, including the forest around the city.

    So, what i think you're missing with the Badgermole thing is that is was the argument that attracted it to them in the first place (post apologies). It was the boiling over of frustrations and sibling anger that made it come at them aggressively. And it was them, in what they think is their last second alive, putting that frustration aside and letting the love for a family member take over before death that made it stop and go docile.
    I believe that's what's being communicated.

      That's actually straight out of the animated show too. Like the fisherman who blames Aang for the state of the world doesn't know he ran away, it's Aang who is tormented by the guilt of running away. The rest of the world doesn't know what happened, some of them just blame him for disappearing regardless, and most are just happy to have him back.

    The criticism that Aang left still works because the world doesn't know he didn't leave them. It doesn't matter whether he left them or not, the world still feels abandoned by him. We as an audience know he didn't leave, so we're good.... but the world doesn't really know.

    It really doesn't matter why Aang left. The point is that he wasn't there. If he spoke up, it would only sound like an excuse. A war has been going on for 100 years, and explaining that he didn't intend to leave is not going to ease anyones minds.

    Have you thought that the reason Aang never pushes back against the accusations that he ran away was because he did feel guilty for running away? On rewatching it, I feel like the “clearing his head” quote was just him justifying him leaving. But I think the fact that even Kyoshi called him out on it makes me believe he did indeed try to run away.

    • @NerdyNightly

      In the episode he literally goes “it’s getting rough, time to head back” so no I don’t really think the episode says that at all 🤷🏼‍♂️

    • @Lothiril
      @Lothiril 3 місяці тому +10

      @@NerdyNightly He wasn't running away from his responsibilities in the animation either - he was afraid of being separated from the temple he knew and his father figure. It never felt to me like a conscious decision that he wanted to go into hiding in order to get around being the Avatar or something - the kid had no plans. I guess one could assume he had the intention of going into hiding and never coming back, and I have no way to prove that wasn't the case. But to be honest, to me it looks more like once he had calmed down and thought things through, he would have realised that running away also separates him from Gyatso and that it wasn't a good idea, because either way he'd be separated and that was the issue he had with the situation.
      In both version flying away is an emotional reaction to some shocking information. In one version he already has plans to come back, in the other he is in much more inner turmoil when the storm hits him - but in neither version did I ever get the impression that he actively tried to run away because he wanted to avoid his responsibilities. And in both versions it's not his fault that the storm prevented whatever he would have done next. Live-action Aang had no more control over being frozen in ice than Aang, and each time both could say "I was frozen for 100 years, there was literally nothing I could do". Because what 12 year old expects to get frozen in ice for 100 years just because they took an unplanned trip with their flying bison?
      YMMV, but imo the difference between the two versions is not that big, and the accusations against Aang in the animation are similarly unjustified as those in the live action. Imo, both don't defend themselves because they suffer from survivor's guilt and have also the feeling that they should have been there, even though both had no control over being stuck in ice. from my perspective that difference is turned into something bigger in discussions than it actually is when you look at the hard facts of both stories.

    • @Saphthings
      @Saphthings 3 місяці тому +10

      @@NerdyNightly That's how guilt works, it's not logical. Even if he just left to clear his head, he'd still be guilty he wasn't there for them when something happened. Not all guilt makes sense, survivor's guilt is literally a term because of it.

      Aang is also running on the logic and impulses of a CHILD that probably didn't put much forethought into leaving/running away. How many kids all over get mad at their parents at some point and pout and threaten to run away, even though it's not logical?@@Saphthings

    • @Saphthings
      @Saphthings 3 місяці тому +5

      @@chrishouseinc Yep, it's like if I go to a party, and then something happens at home to the people I love, a part of me would still feel guilty I wasn't there to help them. The only thing that the show changed is how WE feel about Aangs actions, like we wanna tell him, "It's not your fault buddy", but it doesn't really change how he feels about it.
      So before we'd feel like, "Yeah Aang did something and damn... Don't feel too bad, you didn't know all that would've happened : ("

    Subjective perception is 80% (or more) of how we interpret reality. Aang wasn't there when the Fire Nation started their war, so in effect, He Left Them, regardless of the fact he was frozen in an iceberg.

  • @Jcewazhere

    I really like how they broke Bumi. He should not be the same bright, happy, game playing, 10 year old boy after 100 years of making the tough calls, of losing friends, of war.
    Bumi tries to break Aang to lash out, to maybe make himself feel better about being broken, then tries to end himself, but Aang doesn't break and saves Bumi with the help of his new friends. That brings some hope back to Bumi. Heals a little of the break.
    They (the ppl in the show, not Clarus and Nerdy) could criticize Aang for not learning waterbending, but nope, they have to whine about him playing around or running away... neither of which he's really done in this version. Even in the cartoon there wasn't this much whining about him running away or playing around. The first was understandable, and the 2nd ended up helping the team more often than wasting time.
    Prince Zuko who's had personal training from some of the strongest firebenders for his entire life, and the Dragon of the West vs rando guard 1 through 4? Yeah, I would expect them to dominate.
    I'm fine with the familial love being enough, rather than it needing to be romantic, that gets the badger-moles to be friendly. Them being able to read intentions/energy kinda makes sense. Toph can read whether people are lying. Changing the crystals to always be visible is weird, but I bet it's hard to light them properly without that change.
    Yeah, they watered Katara down too much. The runtime of the cartoon and LA are about the same, yet the LA feels sooo rushed.
    Wait, Clarus was wrong and Nerdy was right about something?! That never happens! /joke.
    Katara beats Azula by trapping her in ice. She throws ice spikes often. She does that ice circular sawblade thing in both versions. She bends a lot of ice.

    I was pleasantly surprised that y'all enjoyed this episode so much when you were so down on the previous one as they feel very much of a piece to me, tonally and structurally consistent with the stories carrying across both to form a deeply satisfying two episode arc. Obviously opinions will differ, but it just struck me as odd to disagree with y'all so strongly on 3 only to be more in accord again on episode 4 when to me they share the same strengths. But hey, glad it's working for you again! I'll stick around to at least see where I lose you again (sadly, i strongly suspect it will be the next one, lol!). 😂
    The people accusing Aang of running away works for me because they don't know any better. Him not arguing the point works for me because he blames himself for running away, however temporarily he intended it, and the guilt he feels over failing the world makes up the bulk of his personal arc in this version.
    Personally, I always found a lot of the secret tunnel "smooch in the dark" in the original a bit forced for the preteen romance arc, and it would have felt wildly out of place here. Familial love being the resolution at the end of this heavy sibling rivalry arc (where they've BOTH been wrong and equally pig headed about it, so it seems odd to pick on just Katara for it) feels appropriate and satisfying. Empathic badgermoles work for me! And we know the tunnels lead to the palace, so the discontinued arena seems as likely an egress point as any! 😜
    Iroh and Zuko are absolutely the MVPs of the show! Every scene works, their dynamic is incredible, and for establishing flashbacks as a device for the first time in this episode, the ones between them absolutely gut me (and Leaves on the Vine works so damn well as a theme of parental love and loss, why wouldn't you use it to tug on my easily manipulated heartstrings as a leitmotif between the two of them? 😭). And as for people talking expository shit at a funeral...i mean, Fire Nation nobles are tacky bitches and gossips, what do you want? 😂

    Yeah, the Zuko/Iroh in this show are top tier. Sokka too. If you pay attention they're the 3 characters that usually show, don't say. And they emote or say what they're feeling, but not WHY they're feeling that way, so it sounds more natural. I dunno if it's an age thing and they tried to make up for the kids by doing the opposite.

And I also don't understand why they've even made this change.

    16:25 who in the show knows Aang “went on a jog”. No one. All they know is he was vanished. 100 years of tales and embellishments. Especially since it would be fire nation starting the tales saying there was no avatar that tried to stop them. He abandoned them all.

    Yeah in the cartoon she just sort of does that freeze thing out of nowhere either. Even the whole breathe to freeze. The difference is in the first episode she froze water and it'd go behind her, so she did it backwards to freeze some enemies. Then she just bended water for a long time and then outta nowhere she does this breath thing. Since she never froze water at all here it feels even more random though.

    The a big problem with this show, is not the show, but misremembering Book 1.
    For most of Book 1, Katara was really timid, only things like sexism or bendism (?) could bring her fury. That all changed after she stood up against Pakku.
    Appa isn't a character in Book 1. The blue spirit episode is the only episode in Book 1 where Appa was more than a flying car... a giant bed.
    I for example are always shocked how Aggressive Zuko is with Iroh, because I always have the Book 2 / Book 3 relationship between them in mind, but in Book 1 he really was a raging child towards him.
