  • **ATTENTION CLIFFS WHEELS WON"T Pop OUT ** You will need an old Harbor Freight Wheel for this to work or a Wen Wheel. Check the comments in this video .Cliff is going to have a shaft adapter to work with his custom wheels soon for the Toolcker so this fix will only work with pop out wheels from Harbor Freight style 1x30's I also know that the WEN 1x30 wheels work because that's what I used on this. There may be other wheels that will work- Michael will probably find them (He is quite the problem solver) THANKS AGAIN MICHAEL!!!
    HERE IS THE LINK TO GET A WHEEL FROM WEN wenproducts.com/products/6515...

    Great solution using old HF idlers. Unfortunately our upgrade idlers have "captured" bearings and dont just pop out.
    I am however working on a sleeve upgrade so that the 15mm center bore precision idlers we have will plug n play on the Tookler. Its on the bench as we speak and mocked up. Stay tuned and thanks for the video Paul!

      Thanks I added what you said to the top of the listing so people know that this will not work with your custom wheels . Well cliff you can probably sell all your old wheels from your many conversions.

      Nice Cliff! A longer sleeve that would eliminate the need for washers and work with the stock spacer/bolt would be cool too. 15mm ID washers can be difficult to find, luckily I have a lifetime supply of aluminum drain plug washers.

      I just ordered and received the idler wheel to upgrade the Toolker, and various belts. When will the plug and play fix for the Toolker be ready for order? Will I need any other hardware for this fix?

    First of all I want to thank Micheal for his suggestion, belt cutter and wheel modification and to you, Paul , for passing it on to us sharpeners!

    Nice job Paul! I send some random bearings, without a note, and you figured it out right away😎
    I got some of Cliff's upgraded idlers, but as Cliff has mentioned, they are over-molded. Beautiful idlers, thanks Cliff!
    I picked up some drill bushings from McMaster-Carr (97060A301) 10x15x12 and pressed them into Cliff's wheel. I machined them down to 11mm to match the bearing width but that is overkill. Side forces are minimal, as the stock HF bearing is a loose press fit into it's wheel.

    This is awesome!!! I love my Toolcker, my issue has been that tracking wheel. Especially with leather strops. Hoping this corrects it. Great fix!

      Yes it’s a really good machine with a few minor tweaks we can make it a great one and happy Cliff is also working on a solution since his wheels are really high quality. Hopefully for those who can get wheels or have old ones from other machines this can be a quick solution. That’s definitely better than having to tape the tracking wheel, but the tape did work for me for a long time but this is clearly a better fix and one I have wanted to do for over a year

      @@ALXSHARPEN I agree, it’s a great little machine and with the little tweaks and upgrades here and there, it makes all the difference.

      My main reason for cobbling up this idler upgrade was to improve leather strop tracking, though I've settled on using my sewing machine motor HF for my leather strop, and two toolchers with Cubitron 120/Trizac A30.......Cliff's recipe😎

    If you put the wheel in a vice, you can also use a socket to tap it out.

  • @r.e.sharpening991
    @r.e.sharpening991 2 місяці тому

    Took me longer to remove the bolt then it did to change the wheel! Tracking is 1000 times better and no shaking on my strop.

      I have not found any I looked for a good part of the day I did see some parts for 1x30 on Ebay I am sure Cliff will have them again at some point

      Hmm Cliff Commented that his wheels don't pop out so looks like you will need an old wheel from HF 1x30

      YES probably many of the 1x30s wheels will work I had a set of Wen wheels and they pop out

    A simpler option would be to run a two or three layers of electrical tape around the center of the wheel, which creates a crown. I've seen this done on 2 x 48 grinders, and it should work in this case as well.

    • @DaleElder11
      @DaleElder11 3 місяці тому

      Yes. You are correct I’m using painters tape on mine and it does work no problem. But I simply would like a better way.

    • @ruftime
      @ruftime 3 місяці тому

      Tape does work, but not as smoothly, especially on a 1x30. The short belt length amplifies any gaps in the tape and more importantly the tape doesn't provide the finer resolution when adjusting tracking, as a curved wheel.

    Paul - I bought everything you have linked on your site but it seems the OD of the replacement bearing is too big compared to the ID of the idler. From what I can tell Cliff’s idlers are different to the ones he sold you.

      Read the Update in the description of the video you need a wheel from a HF or a Wen one of my followers sent me a link I will see if I can find it any wheel from one of their units will work. Clif let me know his wheel's bearing does not come out but some have cut it out but I think it's best to just get a wheel from Wen
