- I couldn't believe it when I saw that this song has over 1.3 BILLION VIEWS on UA-cam. It's Do I Wanna Know? by Arctic Monkeys. A now, classic hit that seemed to propel them even further into success after 5 albums. Unusual and incredible. But, why? Why this song? What is it about this track that people love so much. It's so simple yet there's something about it that's very clever too. Tell me, are you fan of the Arctic Monkeys? Is this song a favourite of yours?

"Cotton Mather" 1997 album" Kontiki" is without a doubt the closest anyone got to writing a Beatles album....Liam Gallagher says so.
Justin, what do you think of the new Def Leppard album, "Diamon Star Halos"?
IM SORRY YOUR HAIR RELAPSED 😞
@@normalwhiteguy1555 A yeah??? You lost me.
Hello, he plays an electric 12 string guitar.
There;s so much you can praise them for; Turner's song writing is massively underrated, they have a completely distinct sound on every album rather than plugging away at the easy tried and tested, and never left their relatively small record label. Great lads
Simon Armitage, Poet Laureate 2009-2019:
"Turner is among the most poetic. His use of internal rhyme exists to be admired and envied. And where some songwriters are never able to get beyond the drama of their own lives and diaries, Turner is more than capable of sidestepping his own experience and producing telling little mini-dramas populated by keenly observed characters."
Carol Ann Duffy, Poet Laureate 2019-present:
"the Arctic Monkeys write poems, they are great lyric writers."
Interesting that both of the previous two Poet Laureates are so enamoured by Turner. I think it speaks volumes.
I wouldn’t say he’s underrated at all. The Arctic Monkeys have been showered with praise from day one and rightly so. His lyrics have always been singled out as being exceptional, original and witty.
Has never been underrated.
Nah man, Arctic Monkeys are way overated. Started running out of ideas on their second record. There's way more interesting rock bands from the 00s. Don't get me wrong the first Monkeys album is brilliant and energetic but their later mass global appeal largely stems from the fact that most of the later stuff is easy to swallow/digest, not very challenging or adventurous and dare I say even pedestrian/tedious. I got pretty disillusioned with these lot when Turner substituted that faster, more biting, almost rapping kind of delivery and lyrics for his later incessant crooning and endless lyrics about romantic bollocks. They didn't really try to grow that much with their early audience. Rather, I think they clocked they had a strong audience of predominantly heartsick, hormonal teenage boys and girls (mostly girls) and decided to stay in that space and cash in. The UK's continued obsession with/adoration of bands like Arctic Monkeys and Oasis speaks of a culture that is stagnant and regressive and celebrates a kind of willful ignorance. It already is, but increasingly will be, music middle aged people sit in the pub and drink pint after pint to wiling away their lives.
Bit harsh. I get where your coming from. First album was brilliant, enjoyed the second and the rest is hit and miss. To put them on par with Oasis.... Ouch. I guess they are both working class bands. Always thought Artic Monkeys had more about them. It's all about opinions. Anyone that you'd champion at the moment?
Everything Alex Turner gets involved with oozes quality....The Last Shadow Puppets are also incredible...this bloke is unfeasibly prolific.
Prolific is the wrong word, especially when you look at the rate of his recent output. But he's certainly one of the most talented songwriters working today.
We gotta give some props to James Ford though... I adore Alex Turner, but producers deserve their due.
@TremoloBones It's all relative, You're clearly a troll.
Prolific should probably be reserved for the likes of Robert Pollard. Doesn't mean this guy isn't good though.
@@REBsessions James Ford is actually extremely hit or miss. His production of AM maybe great because its his bread and butter sound potentially, his production of Shames second album was extremely weak imo. Sounded incredibly overcompressed and bass heavy, similar to some Foals stuff
Matt Helders is the Arctic Monkeys' secret weapon. Not only is he a monster drummer, but his high R&B backing vocals make so many of their songs. There's a great acoustic version of this tune where just the two of them play it on a live-to-air US radio show in front of a small audience and you realise just how important Matt Helders is to the band's sound.
ahadadahaah
well said
He’s always been great but on the AM record he really shines and it wouldn’t be nearly the same album without him. One for the road, knee socks, do I wanna know, R U Mine, etc.
Very much agreed man
WELL SAID
Since I'm outrageously early to this, I thought I'd mention that it's a Vox Starstream 12 string. Hence the unique timbre.
And it’s tuned down to be be just a bit heavier
Ok, I would’ve assume they just double tracked that take, but that’s cool if it’s a single instrument that sounds like that. It’s like playing with an octave pedal, but for real, and without all the cool processing artifacts in the tone that adds a certain vibe some folks are into.
Thanks for the info.
@@shawnstoner3602 If it's in G then downtuning is meaningless. Things only "sound" downtuned if they're below E. (and, before you say it, no they didn't downtune 9 semitones to G)
@@2255223388 Didn’t they downtune 9 semitones to G?
@@shawnstoner3602 It's definitely not tuned down. They overdubbed a lot of guitar tracks on this album to fill out the sound. You might just be hearing overtones. In other songs, sometimes Alex Turner adds in a baritone track, which is something he picked up during the first shadow puppets record. That's about as close to down tuning they'll ever get, apart from drop d on Don't Sit Down... a few years back
All I know is they've produced one of the most underrated rock albums even amongst the AM fans and that's humbug, now I know I'm not alone and people do like this album but it almost deserves a reappraisal because it's such a good album
By far the single most underrated rock album of our generation
Humbug feels like a cross between AM and Queens of the Stone Age, I don't think fans were ready for a change that drastic, hopefully people can look back on it now and realize that the combo is in fact, very cool.
Brilliant album my favorite so dark and moody👍
I didn’t like it when it first came out. Now I think it’s possibly my favourite album. (Will always love the first album mind). Humbug is a creative masterpiece!!!
Humbugs probably my favourite AM album.
Turner is one of the best lyricists that this country has ever produced, the band evolves regularly and stays interesting and relevant without doing what Coldplay do and just selling out to radio friendly sounds, and they really captured the zeitgeist when they came about
He's one of the best lyricists of this generation. He's just so brilliant. Deserves so much more praise than he gets
Agree. Turner-zeitgeist! Coldplay? Wouldn't dignify them with a response.
"I WANT TO BE YOUR VACCUM CLEANER"
I think Alex said AM was basically them trying to produce a rock record using hip-hop processes, but with real instruments, so layering, sequences etc. The riff from DIWK is such a good building block for this tune.
I think your acoustic version, playing the chords and humming over them just show how well crafted this song is, and how beautiful the melody is.
Turners songwriting has always been a cut above. Absolute master of his craft
It's the driving riff, with swagger and swinging vocals. Smashing song.
Hey Justin, I really love the way you break these songs down just from using your ear. I play guitar myself and Its impressive to see a professional musician do that. Thanks
This channel has quickly become my favorite--thank you for all you do, Justin.
Your stuff is by far my favorite for getting away mentally...
Thanks, bro!!!
That version u did at 4:15 is beautiful please make a full version
Favourite Worst Nightmare is the album from Arctic Monkeys I still listen to the most. I like the debut and certain songs from the other albums but the second album is my favourite.
I find the b side songs are great.
Yeah, it's pretty much perfect
FWN is underrated. I usually only hear praise for "Whatever People Say I am...", "Humbug" and "AM". It's as though people forgot!
spot on. followed closely by Suck it and See.
Suck it and See I reckon is the one that has aged the best . FWN has songs like do me a favour which are great . The beefed up songs though like flouresecent , teddy picker , brianstorm are old sounding songs .
Bloody hell, you sir are incredibly talented. Great channel.
Some songs hit the nerve so well because they completely incapsulate moments that feel so personal, but also universal. This one is drunkenly thinking about someone and wanting to ride that feeling to say something you’ll regret in the morning. The riff and drums so embodies that kind of drunken swagger hanging by a thread. It’s brilliant. High stakes personal drama - all probably occurring within three minutes of someone’s mind on whether we should write that text or make that call. Love it. And how the riff ends up back where it started sort of clumsy, sort of inescapable inevitableness of making a tit out of oneself almost on purpose to get a reaction and end up back on the lounge drunken and full of regrets to cheekily try again the next night. Love it
I think part of the success of this song lays on those extremely relatable and beautifully crafted lyrics
That album has a very specific sound to it, to this day there’s nothing else that sounds anything like it. A lot of it has to do with the consistency of the tempo of the majority of the songs being 95 bpm exactly, and the almost constant usage of a descending bassline in minor
I totally agree with you, but I'd also add that you can say that about pretty much all of their albums. They all sound like from a very specific era, yet are all so obviously 'Arctic Monkeys' albums. I can't quite pinpoint it right at this moment but it's how I feel
Kasabian, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, maybe?
As far as I'm concerned Turner's musical and lyrical ability puts him up there with some of the very British best, he's incredibly talented and like some of the very best he hasn't stood still churning out derivative stuff. I'd love a thumbnail of his talent
he's a culture sponge. And it's crazy that he can play piano, guitar, bass, drums, can sing beautifully, writes beautiful melodies, writes witty and funny and thought provoking lyrics, made the artwork for TBH&C with his bare hands, directed the video for 'Mirrorball'. He's just so involved in the process of everything and I appreciate that out of an artist so much.
If an artist cares that much about their art, it gives me all the more reason to love it (the end product still has to be enjoyable to the consumer though of course..)
One of the best bands of the current era. Their lyrical wit is unrivaled by most rock bands today and they're always fun and interesting. Clever and original. Not a bad thing I could say about their music.
This song is deceptively hard to pull off live. I tried to do it with a band and even though it's based around just one riff, there's a lot going on vocally with background vocals having a heavy role in the choruses. It's a lot of things to keep track of and if just one thing is off it can severely train wreck the song. My band did it at a handful of rehearsals and it just wasn't coming together for us.
Agreed

Breath of fresh air
Love seeing all the "discovered all the way back in 2013" comments. I was riffling through a Rolling Stone in 2006 and came across a small article about Arctic Monkeys and knew I had to check them out. Really enjoyed the first few EPs and their first album hooked me like no other. Had to wait until 2009 to see them, when they came to a medium-sized club that wasn't even sold out. The next time I saw them was in a sold out arena. Although I didn't care for the millions of teenage girls who came on the Arctic Monkeys train when AM came out, I was ecstatic they got the praise they deserved. Alex Turner is a true poet and their music in unabashedly THEM while still changing style with each record. Forever my favorite band. A much younger me has an acoustic cover of "Why'd You Only Call Me When You're High?" on my channel... ah, the good ol' days.
That’s handy dude - cos the millions of teenage girls probably don’t care much for you either haha
2006? I heard from a fortune teller in 1980 that my favourite band would be Arctic Monkeys and I knew I had to check them out. But I had to wait for them to be born, grow up and form a band before I could listen to them.
Damn this was a extremely pretentious post… like are expecting an award. Also if you truly liked the band teenage girls wouldn’t have any effect on you. Must not be a real fan falling into this gate keeping shit. One breath you say you don’t like the fandom for attic monkeys then cry when someone has lived their life not hearing one of their songs😂 you music snob. People like you always ruin recording sessions.
@@GoggledAgog I remember my great grandfather getting into them back in 1892. Everyone since then is just a poser
I remember finding and hearing for the first time I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor on LimeWire and downloading it to my iPod Nano. (Along with Bloc Party and Franz Ferdinand)
Good memories!
Definitely my new favourite UA-cam channel. Very insightful 👍
Arctic monkeys are a great band I love how they change their sound every album. I’m glad they didn’t just keep repeating their first album like so many wanted them to. I think humbug is probably my favourite album by them but I love all their albums except suck it and see witch was alright.
Exactly right, they have matured so much, Alex Turner is such a great lyricist. a modern daily Dylan or Lennon. Songs from the album Suck it and see and the songs from the soundtrack Submarine are just poetic.
Suck it and See is excellent. So understated. But I agree, Humbug is their best work.
I disagree, their first album was still the best and their other albums kinda trash. I can respect if they wanted to have some variety and not be bound by 1 genre, however I swear by the if it's not broke don't fix it and sometimes these risks don't pay off. For them it obviously did pay off but at the same time it didn't. Was basically the same as selling out to make music for the mainstream while at the same time abandoning the style which made them good in the first place.
Edit - I mean the album "whatever people say I am, that's what i'm not"....this is their best album not the first album my bad
@@GrowingDownUnder awful take
@@vicvinegar4540 humbug album wasn't bad, just their mainstream stuff kinda went really girly and more pop style. Humbug still wasn't better than Whatever you say I am. I still prefer the punk style the most and that album gave me punk vibe from start to finish
The first album is so good, it's perfect fun, reflective of the fun drunken nights you have with your best friends
And I think the reason this song and this album in general, is so popular is because of how it was kind of targeted towards America, the rockabilly style, American style rock, and it definitely worked, this is how they got their success in America.
Totally agree. First album still slaps, second was still good but not as consitent...pretty much didn't like anything that came out after that. I have no idea why Do I Wanna Know caught on in the way it did.
AM was just so radio friendly. Average Americans don't get exposure to British music unless it's all over the radio. Do I Wanna Know and Knee Socks are the kinda summer hits you drive around blasting with your friends. Catchy cylical riffs, linear arragement, those hooks that beg you to sing along. It's like that pasta with hidden vegetables in it, but it's pop with hidden rock. America's need more guitar laced pasta.. but for a lot of us it was the doorway into a lot of their older stuff and that Brittish Garage Rock that is so tasty.
First three albums are PERFECT.
After Humbug it's good, but that's it.
@@HolyCanoley Because of how anthemic it is
First 2 albums are my personal favourites but I'd pick the second although a certain romance Is the best song they've ever recorded

Love the channel, Justin. It's great to see you include Arctic Monkeys as one of your showcase episodes. They're one of the greatest bands the UK has produced in my humble opinion. And the last great era for rock when you think of the other bands coming through with them in the early noughties - The Killers, The Strokes, Franz Ferdinand, and of course The Darkness among many others. Thanks for the music and the memories
I LOVE the Arctic Monkeys! They are such a great band and deliver every album. I have been a fan for about a year now and I LOVE THEM. I even got my best friend and my mom into them. They are one of those bands that has a HUGE audience and a great sound that is not repetitive. One of my dreams is to be in a band and cover songs, especially Arctic Monkeys songs. The words in Arctic Monkeys' songs are also just amazing. I do not know how they do it but they do! Great Band 10/10 recommend.
Wanna buy their first ever single off me then? 1000 copies made. I was at uni on Sheffield in 2004 and saw them at pubs and bars. Knew them to speak to. Always wanted to see a band on ‘the up’, a band the quality of The Clash, or Nirvana etc, and my dream came true. They were phenomenal
This whole album, "AM" is one of those rare works of art where ALL the tracks are amazing. They could all be singles by themselves. All killer, no filler as they say!
Strokes did it better
I felt that way about Favourite Worst Nightmare. Never foresaw them doing it again… but here we are.
no filler? wtf is i want it all then? that's straight up filler and not a good song whatsoever. then there's stuff like mad sounds and fireside that while not bad are far from these amazing tracks you're talking about. and all of this is coming from a massive arctic monkeys fan.

Love your channel Justin, nice one mate
Not only Alex Turner is probably one of the best lyricists of all time, but I haven’t discovered any other band that has mastered that cool and effortless rock n roll feeling quite so well.
@firetv2169 show me a better bridge lyric than ‘in late afternoon, the ghost in your room that you always thought didn’t approve of your knocking boots, never stopped you letting me get hold of the sweet spot by the scruff of your knee socks.’
why this bridge lyrics is so good:
1 It is one run-on sentence but it flows extremely natural with the melody. 99% of sentences in music are short cause it’s very difficult to write a long one that can fit a melody.
2 in just one sentence he summarizes the story of the whole song. the song is written from the perspective of someone that’s dating a girl who very recently got out of another relationship. this sentence encapsulates that whole dynamic in less than three lines.
3 The internal rhymes of the sentences are really well timed and executed which makes it flow incredibly natural.
The bridge (the whole song) in Arabella is also extremely well written and has the best interconnection between verses that i’ve ever seen.
Some other great lyrics by Alex are:
“Do you look into the mirror to remind yourself you’re there, or have somebody’s goodnight kisses got that covered?”
“Would a kiss be too much to ask? when you fit me like Sunday’s frozen pitch fits the thermo’s flask.”
“Do your time traveling through the tanning booth so you don’t let the sun catch you crying.”
He’s also really good at storytelling in his songs, just read the lyrics of When The Sun Goes Down, Riot Van, or Cornerstone
he’s also really good at constructing a mood, just look at Crying Lightning or just the complete TBHC album
he can integrate a lot of references really seamlessly, look at Star Treatment
And overall he’s just really fucking original
And yeah, there are other really good lyricist, that’s why I said ONE of the best. There are other great ones like the ones you mention, Elliott Smith, Fiona Apple, Patti Smith, Ben Howard. Although I can think of many that are better than the some of the ones you mentioned like Al Stewart, Joni Mitchell, Bruce Springsteen, Jose Maria Cano, or Bowie
I actually think Alex Turner and Bob Dylan’s are very similar while having very different styles
04:14 the way Justin plays it here made me realise how much it sounds like an Ennio Morricone theme! Like something straight out of the "dollars" trilogy.
They are awesome. For some reason I’m so happy that you come to that conclusion. That’s a sign of a great band when we the audience so want to ‘own it’ like we discovered them first, I most definitely didn’t but this is one of my all time favourites. Still loving your channel, I found it first…didn’t x
Would love to hear your thoughts on one of my current favorite rock bands, Royal Blood. Really all three of their albums are solid, but the first two are great. They are a two-piece band from the UK. Simple and great all around.
to me, they are like The White Stripes if they tried for a heavier sound. Royal blood is pretty good but they haven’t brought anything new to scene either. They are insane given some of the stuff they pull off with just 2 people
this is just my opinion
Awesome live. Not so great on a record.
Royal Blood is mucho fuego
I grew up listening to the greats of the 70s and 80s and even I think that riff may be one of the coolest riffs ever.
Have you ever noticed all the singles off this album have nearly identical chord progressions? It's always that Em - C - Am kinda sound. It's put to great effect without ever sounding too repetitive.

Can I just say I really love your content. I really relate to just sitting in front of my computer with a guitar and just browsing music and appreciating the artistry involved in making good music.
Music in any form lends an ear. And that’s the beauty of it.. some of the great bands including the Beatles made hits of simple chord progressions. Like arctic monkeys they made a noise that people liked. Doesn’t matter how smart you are on a guitar, drums or any other instrument ,. It’s music, it’s a creation by someone being creative. This band was in the right place at the right time.. and have an audience including myself. That’s the beauty of music, in any class or instrument. . It’s the noise at the time. it can be simple or complex, you like it or you don’t It’s as simple as that. It’s music. 😉
My daughter is really into the Monkeys, and I have to say I’ve been enjoying their output when we listen to it in the car. Interestingly, I was really hearing newer Black Midi stuff in that as a well. Never noticed that before. The band are very tight. Great players.
This is my favourite Arctic Monkeys song, its like you mention, the simplicity of the big drums with a cool riff! Would love to see you do a 'Bass Drum Of Death' listen and reaction 🙂
My son turned me on to their music with Favorite worst nightmare and I’ve been hooked ever since. Finally got to see them live during the AM tour with both my children in there 20’s it was amazing. They are brilliant
My band supported the Arctic Monkeys at The Boardwalk in Sheffield just before they got massive.
We heard that some A&R people had come to watch ‘the monkey band’, however, there were four bands on the bill (ourselves included) and two of them had the word ‘monkey’ in the title, the headline act being Monkey Swallows The Universe… so we assumed, given they were the top of the bill, the labels had come to see them.
So when Arctic Monkeys came on we were absolutely shocked with how good they were! They were amazing.

I've really enjoyed his channel, guy has a great personality, interesting takes and is effortlessly charismatic, even just while being chill. Now I'm on a binge watching this channel
The effect is tremolo on the sustained notes, and it's one of the all time great uses of that effect.
I wasn't a big fan of the theme song until I heard the Marc Bolin vibrato in your voice. Now I love it.

Turner is sadly the last in a long line of truly great song writers. He always seems to be able to capture the feeling of being a certain age and make us all feel something. I feel like I’ve grown up with him soundtracking my life

For somebody like me who HATED.....or more so LOATHED the Darkness when they first came to my attention.....i must say that Justin Hawkins the person is one of my favorite people of all time.
I love everything about your whole vibe with a good amount of musical theory cheekily wedged in.
Thank you for being you.
Yeah, same here. Couldn't stand the Darkness but love this stuff.
Nice mellow musical intro.
Normally I listen on headphones at a certain volume and the intro normally blows my head clean off.😊
I can’t always go there with you but I always give it a honest go. Much appreciated. It’s good to hear a champion in a time where the inhuman intersection of code and commerce rules without question.
Bruh first time watching your channel and at 0:38 in, floored with your singing
The drum beat is almost identical to long hot summer by the style council too 👌. Great video.
1:26 I said “Stroke” a half second before you did. That is the only similarity with the Billy Squier song.
I’ve never watched the YT video for this song, probably because I tend to prefer my stereo.
It is a smashing good tune. I bought it after the first time I heard it on the radio.
Nice pick, Justin. 🎸
Were you thinking about Royal Blood or cleopatrick when you mentioned similar sounds? Both use a heavy, fuzzy bass sound, though Mike of RB routes his bass through two guitar amps. Rock is all about the guitar, even when it’s bass.
This is a video I wanted to see
