John Rhys-Davies (Indiana Jones, The Lord of the Rings) joins us this week for one of my favorite interviews yet. The guy is prolific! He gets into everything from his pessimism heading into Lord of the Rings, the intimidation of working alongside Sean Connery, the immense difficulty of filming Indiana Jones: Raiders of the Lost Ark, and so much more. John was an open book this week, going on to talk about the pain of losing a child, his outlook on life after death, and the current vacuum of creativity our industry is stuck in. Hope you enjoy.

Got to see John at Indiana Comic Con recently. Very, very sweet man. He takes the time for everyone, he shows he cares. Moreover, his intelligence and knowledge for the human condition just shines through! He truly amazed me. Upon getting his autograph, he asked me what my occupation was... I told him my embarrassing truth in that I'm a cart pusher at a grocery store, but he just told me that it was an honest living and that he found me an interesting man. What an honor to be called such from what I find to be an amazing and inspiring man!

I love how open John Rhys-Davies is. He talks with his heart open, he places pearls of wisdom down, he is a phenomenal storyteller. I can listen to him talk for hours upon hours. I have, when listening to TLOTR boxset commentary and behind the scenes countless times. What a human, what a gentleman... what an enlightening interview. I adore him. 💖

My dad died recently, about a month after his cancer diagnosis. It isn't the same as John's loss of his son, but it is my loss. I remember that I was, by happenstance, the first of my brothers to be told, and the first thing my dad did was apologize to me. He wanted to do more, he wanted to have been better, but the truth is that he couldn't have been any better a father without transcending humanity. I know because everything I learned from him that is part of me is good.
I have some time ago begun to practice something like what John describes at about 5:11, but only really codified it with Dad's death: living sincerely. Especially when greeting and speaking to and saying goodbye to anyone, mean that you love them and let them know. Closure isn't the opportunity to say one more thing, or have the perfect line. Closure is part of how you live. Making sure the people in your life know that they are loved, know that they are important, that they matter, to the best of your ability.
Coincidentally, my dad's first name is John, too.

Carrie Fisher was right when she said that celebrity is just obscurity biding its time. John Rhys-Davies at this age reminds me so much visually of my dad, and he's got the right attitude for when the curtain closes over us. It's a mystery we'll only know for sure when we cross that threshold.

It's not the inadequacy, the irrelevancy, of great artists which is to blame for their obscurity. It is the wilful ignorance of the younger generations, which refuses to grant significance to anyone or anything which extends beyond roughly five years ago. When I was a child, I knew all about the significant events & persons of my parents' generation & of my significantly elder sister's. I love to read even ancient history. I want to KNOW things. The youth of today don't. Period. Sad. 😢

2:02 So, your son was only five days old when he died, and you think that compares to the pain of someone like my wife and I will knowingly bear when our 18 year old passes away? No, sir - you did not have time to get attached to that child. What you lost was a temporary sense of new parenthood and purpose, but you did not lose a human being to which you grew intrinsically attached, came to know, loved with all your heart, and HAD to let go after much time for all time.
