I met John Rhys-Davies 2 years ago in Heathrow airport, he was gracious and kind. Gave me time for a quick chat and photo. One of my favorite characters from my childhood movie memories!😀
I've had food poisoning twice in my life - those moments are seared into my memory as one of the most horrific experiences. It's similar to heroin withdrawal but with slightly more diarrhea. You drop weight like anything.. light headed, flu, pain, stomach cramps, no warning, sudden explosive emissions. The first time I was around 16 and visited San Francisco for the first time. I went into an okay-looking cafe and ordered a burger. It took a suspiciously long time to arrive. 2 hours later, I ruined an entire hotel hoom and the manager had to send in a cleaner in a biohazard suit to water-spray clean the carpets (no joke!) I was with my brother who is 5 years younger than me. We both had it.. I was hallucinating and passing in and out of consciousness and was watching an episode of the X Files with the invisible elephant.. which bled into my dreams and semi-conscious state. It was a nightmare. Another time, I got it with my girlfriend at the time. We were so sick we couldn't make it upstairs so we camped out on the ground floor with cushions and covers. Also - I'm an idiot - it took me a few times to realise that the pork balls at a chinese restaurant in town made me double over in pain a few hours later. But they were tasty, I really didn't want to believe it was the pork. I'm probably full of tape worms and parasites. That restaurant closed down every 6 months and re-opened under a new name, same management. Either it was a money laundering front, or a way to avoid murder charges from bad pork. All true stories..
Food poisoning is HORRIBLE! I thought I'd had it multiple times...until I actually got it...BAD! I got it from a pizza place I used to work at. An old free slice of BBQ chicken pizza. The onset was very sudden. I was still working, and it wasn't until my boss heard me being violently ill in the bathroom that he had mercy...and said I had to deliver one more pizza on my way home...I almost shit myself at their doorstep...After that, I can remember being in and out of consciousness on the toilet. I was completely unprepared for an illness like this. I was so dehydrated. I'd take a sip of water, and within 30 seconds, it came right back out my ass. Constant vomiting and diarrhea. I couldn't absorb any water or nutrients. After my multi-hour toilet adventure, that seemed to last a lifetime, I only had the strength to crawl, like a slow dying worm, to my bedroom. I'd wrapped a towel around myself, as I couldn't stop the onslaught of diarrhea. It was one of the first times in my life that I actually thought I might die, and I was too sick to even think to call for help, let alone actually dialing a number. I didn't even have the strength to pull myself into my own bed, even if I'd had a mind to think it'd be a good idea. (it definitely wasn't...) The next day, after a night of hell, I had to text my sister to beg her to bring me Gatorade and medicine. She found me on the floor, hardly able to speak...In all, it took about 3 days to fully get out of the woods. I've NEVER been more sick, and I've been sick a lot. I've had chronic gastric issues and illnesses my entire life, even before and after this. It sort of gave me a new lease on life...not that that changed much for me lol, but, it made me appreciate the more boring, normal, mundane bits of life even more. They might not be so exciting, but...at least I'm not dying on a toilet or wrapped in a towel on the floor of my bedroom genuinely wondering if I'll survive...
Reading your account I did laugh, sorry, when you were saying "and I was hallucinating" I could just picture it like something out of a Hunter S. Thompson movie. Glad you survived.
i always worry about getting this. thats why i get rid of food early. i dont eat too many pork products. some from japanese restraunts and everytime i wonder, i hope they cooked it well. luckily its usually ramen or curry so i soak that mean for awhile before eating it .
I'm so sorry for him and the crew...it's horrible to go through...but especially when you get to the point where you publicly evacuate your bowels and could care less where you are or who you are with...just horrible!
I had food poisoning when I had to give two performances in the same day for a play in an auditorium filled with children. I had not slept all night and was quite dehydrated, but.."the show must go on! I feel your pain, John!
Was trucking from Golden Colorado to San Bernardino. Stopped for dinner at Dennys in Kingman Arizona. Woke up to drive about 4am, feeling horrible. I started that desert drive and got horribly sick along the way. I remember having to pull over the side of the road and vomiting out the passenger window--coming out both ends. I made it to Barstow and collapsed. Called the company and let them know I was sick and couldn't deliver. I spent an hour laying on the floor of the truckstop shower. Slept most of the day. Woke up 2am having to use the bathroom. Climbed out of the truck and as soon as my keds hit the pavement I lost it. Just climbed back into the truck and cleaned up. I got up the next morning and drove to my delivery, picked up my next load. Collapsed at the Whitewater rest area on 10 East. I literally laid in my bunk unable to catch my breath for about an hour. Some of the sickest I've ever been.
Food poisoning is the reason I never buy takeout food any more. I nearly died from food poisoning back in 2020. Lost so much weight so quickly, heart rate was way too fast, was dehydrated to the point of needing hospitalisation. Food poisoning is the absolute worst.
I once got food poisoning after a meal at Del Taco about 20 years ago. It was the worst pain I ever went through. I kept feeling the need to throw up but nothing came out but each time I thought I had to throw up, it was like being stabbed with a knife in the stomach. I'm not a religious man, but I actually remember praying to God to kill me to end the pain. So, I feel John's pain and would never wish food poisoning on my worst enemy. The only good that I got out of it was that it kicked my habit of fast food. Haven't had fast food in 20 years. Been on Keto for the last 3 years and have never felt better.
I did too. My backside felt like I had a hand grenade of chocolate milk blowing out of it at absolutely anytime. Nothing rushes out of your body faster than that.😂💩💩💥🔥 I must admit I was wishing for death or if I lived I’d live the life of a saint.
@@oscarwilde5473 ...28?!?! Yikes. Yeah, I do not miss fast food at all. Having said that, I did find a place called Burger Lounge which serves grass-FED burgers and I've had some and they are really good. They serve it paleo style, meaning no bun but with lettuce, avocado and cooked zucchini. It tastes great. Now if I could just find a restaurant that served grass-FINISHED burgers, that would be ideal. Grass-finished means the cow only ate grass whereas grass-fed means they ate grass but also other things, like grain (unfortunately).
@@oscarwilde5473 Listen, I tried the vegetarian diet, vegan diet, fish diet, paleo diet...when it comes to protein, I believe the science, which is the best source comes from pasture-raised eggs, wild caught sardines or salmon, grass-finished beef, pasture-raised chicken/turkey and certain nuts and seeds. Thirty years ago I woke up at roughly 2am one morning during the summer in a deep sweat, doubled over with stomach pain. I barely pulled my pants down before I experienced the worst case of diarrhea in my life. And thus began 12 hours of hell in which I was curled up in the Fetal Position on the floor of my bathroom, alternating between throwing up and extremely messy bowel movements. My wife and I ate at Red Lobster the night before. Amongst other things, I had escargot, but she didn’t, and I wonder if I was dealing with a bout of food poisoning afterwards. I concur when people say that they wanted to die, as there were many times during those 12 hours that I too was longing for Death’s warm embrace. That experience permanently altered my enjoyment of seafood. I used to be able to eat fried shrimp by the pound, but after that experience, I couldn’t even look at it for nearly two years, and anything else out of the ocean actually made me feel queasy for many years afterward. Since then, I’ve never darkened the door of a Red Lobster, and it will stay that way for the rest of my life, no matter if I’m starving and Red Lobster was the lone remaining eating establishment in existence. I’ve only recently started eating salmon and sardines for the Omega Fatty Acids as I’m trying to cut down on the inflammation throughout my body, but I can take or leave lobster tail, shrimp, clams, etc. It left such an impression that I’m actually feeling sick at the memory.
John Rhys is my favorite actor. Notice he describes awful circumstances without any profanity? Imagine him as the detective in Death in Paradise. He would wonderful.
I've had food poisoning with all the severe symptoms on a number of occasions. A doctor once told me the diarrhoea, throwing up and blacking out (tunnel vision) is a good sign. It means you're body is trying to clear out the toxic food and you're not dying (although you might feel like it). He also said, if you make yourself throw up the minute you start feeling unwell, the symptoms will be far less severe. Food poisoning happens mostly in hot climates when food is not cooked properly. Spicy food, the spicier the better, is a good protection against food poisoning. That's why people in hot countries generally eat spicy food.
It's pretty bad. Before modern science and medicine, it certainly wiped out a LOT of individuals. Noraviruses are probably worse than coronoviruses. If a pandemic of N-Viruses ever strikes... d'ohhh boy. 😳🙄😓🤮😵☠️
Once I had 8 million year old jam while pet sitting a friend's house. Omg the intestinal cramps the pain the diarrhea and then to top it off I get a phone call the people visiting my house at that time took long showers and the sewer backed up into the bath spilling out on the floor and dripping down into the basement. That is not a day I want to relive. My house guests left me to clean up and used my bath towels. They were not invited back.
Oh, holy cow. This is the grossest and most hilarious story I've heard in a long time. And that it came from John Rhys- Davies makes it a thousand times better.
Got food poisoning in El Paso, TX during a convention. Dropped a good 15+ pounds in 20 hours. It wasn't hell, but I could sure see it from my hotel room. So, I can't _begin_ to imagine having to go through that with ants crawling over me. Just love John's dry delivery of that story XD
Reminds me of when I was served undercooked Quiche but didn't want to be disrespectful so I hate it any way. The next day was absolute hell dropping from 170lbs to 162lbs and shitting myself to death. The day after I did start to get better and once I was mended I felt unstoppable and nothing could kill me.... Except for undercooked Quiche.
Oh, man, I was at a movie theater waiting in line at the concession stand, the line was getting backed up, and suddenly I hear this voice say "the line is getting long" or something like that. The voice was unique and seemed to travel effortlessly so I turned around and it's Rhys-Davies. lol He wasn't being rude at all or anything, his voice came out in a kind, smooth way.
It’s not the cooked food that gets you. It’s the salads and fruit. There is a line in the movie “bad dates”, this is what likely caused the food poisoning if dates were in season.
john has used that line in telling that story many times over the years and I find it funny every time! LOL "I filled my jalaba in front of 200 people and I didn't care".
I really feel for JRD & the whole crew. Food poisoning is the absolute worst! Had it in college & was sick for 3-4 days. I did think I was dying. Coming out both ends, had a high fever & chills & sweats. Of course it was over 7/4 weekend. Pretty much loved in the bathroom
My friend from Canada went to India on a construction project and after a few weeks came down with a horrific case of Delhi belly. He was in hospital for almost a month and said later there were times when he wished he had died it was so awful. He lost about 30 pounds and if he hadn't been such a big man he might have really died.
Yep.Cauro is similar never ever touch the tap water there I got sick for a month had to be treated at the tropical disease institute in Vienna Austria.
I've had much milder versions and from both ends but not at the same time thankfully. Even then it really isn't nice, what they went through sounds really horrific, even allowing for exagerration in storytelling.
Ive had a similar experience once but i was stuck on the toilet for hours. Luckily i had a tap right next to me so i was keeping my hydrated at least but its truly amazing and horrifying how much can come out of the human body
Had amoebic dysentery in Thailand. After a couple of weeks I'm pretty sure I was passing internal organs. JRD is an absolute legend. If it floored a trooper like him, it must have been bad.
Losing 10% of your body weight can have many health benefits, including: Improved heart health Reduced risk of diabetes Better sleep Reduced joint pain Increased energy Decreased risk of cancer You can start to see health benefits from losing even a small amount of weight. In fact, losing 5-10% of your body weight is considered "modest but clinically significant".
What an amazing interview, it truly brightened my day! Who's the poor soul in the mask? God bless you, read the Cochrane Report on Masking and then move on with life.
JRDavies is so captivating a commentator. My worst sickness ever was similar, but not nearly as bad as his. By the third day I had not been able to eat in two days, and was so weak I could hardly leave my bed, except when adrenaline kicked in when I had to 'emergecy expel'. There are other things similar, that I choose not to go into. It was bad, bad, terrible!
Sickest I ever got was pretty much being doubled over/laying on the bathroom floor damn near 4-6 hours straight, alternating between actually vomiting and being horribly noxious and wretching but nothing coming out. I ended up with brownish-red vomit which basically means i cut something up on the inside and was vomiting slight amount of blood.
never had food poisoning which is crazy considering how much out food i eat. thankfully ive been blessed with a cast iron stomach and can count on 1 hand the number of times i've puked.
Back in 2009, me and my sister both caught a nasty stomach virus or bug several weeks after our vacation at Disney Land. We were living in Lee Massachusetts at the time and it was the middle of January, so we had to get up early in the morning to catch the plane from there and back. At some point after our vacation, we've ordered Chinese food at the local Chinese food place and you know with Chinese food there's always going to be left overs. My sister was the first one to catch the bug, apparently after eating leftover lo mein, luckily for me I didn't catch any of the symptoms as of yet. Later on in the week, I had some of the left over chinese and nibbled on a burrito from Hot Harrys. Then suddenly out of the blue I caught the bug and MAN it was repulsive. And like John here, I was bed ridden. I couldn't have a proper BM without throwing up so I was forced to relive myself in the bed. Yeah my skin still crawls thinking of the experience. By the next day I felt a little better, however the experience gave me some form of PTSD, I was hesitant to have a BM in the upstairs bathroom so I always used the downstairs one. There was also a point in time where I suddenly feel nauseous and my legs would start vibrating uncontrollably. As the years went by that began to stop and life returned to normal. We also continued to get take out from that particular Chinese restaurant during the early 2010s with no problems. You could say that whatever happened in 2009 was a freak incident. However even to this day, I am weary of going on planes, eating Chinese food mixed with Mexican food, and eating left over Chinese food.
I imagine Lord of the Rings was pretty bad given that he was allergic to the adhesive they used to apply the latex prosthetics to his face plus having to film a good portion of the movie on his knees.
It was improvised, he's talking about what was originally planned - three pages in the script being thrown out because the gun moment was shown to work.
Sorry John but part 5 is absolutely horrible and part 2 actually gets a tremendous amount of love these days. I really hope they release it on the big screen this year for 40th anniversary.

There is a line in the movie “bad dates”, this is what likely caused the food poisoning if dates were in season.
He can make a story about something absolutely awful occurring seem classy. He is a wonderful story teller.
john has used that line in telling that story many times over the years and I find it funny every time!
Cairo
India is a disgusting place. Not surprised he got sick.
He did not mention #6. I wonder if this was filmed before he shot the most recent Indy Film
lmfao at John describing Spielberg as a SOB
Ive never had food poisoning thankfully or it out both ends but bet it was horrendous glad you made it through
I've had much milder versions and from both ends but not at the same time thankfully. Even then it really isn't nice, what they went through sounds really horrific, even allowing for exagerration in storytelling.
@@Elwaves2925 must of been horrible for them
They had dysentery. I have had it 5 times. Food poisoning sucks, but dysentery is on a whole new level.
3 times is Saudi Arabia
2 times in Panama
It’s a good thing you weren’t on the Oregon Trail
That is rough 😢
Why Im never going to Florida again. Theres only 3 times Ive been badly that sick to my stomach. 2 of them was in Florida.
Ive had a similar experience once but i was stuck on the toilet for hours.
Luckily i had a tap right next to me so i was keeping my hydrated at least but its truly amazing and horrifying how much can come out of the human body
What a great voice, and a great storyteller as well.
The memory of food poisoning never goes away.
Funny how rarely do we talk about it.
No matter how hard or painful it was, nobody could have played Gimli as well as John Rhys-Davies. The same for Gandalf. Ian McKellan IS Gandalf.
Had amoebic dysentery in Thailand. After a couple of weeks I'm pretty sure I was passing internal organs. JRD is an absolute legend. If it floored a trooper like him, it must have been bad.
Bad food poising is hell to go through I went through it once..
Terrific actor with a one of a kind voice you do not forget.
Losing 10% of your body weight can have many health benefits, including:
Improved heart health
Reduced risk of diabetes
Better sleep
Reduced joint pain
Increased energy
Decreased risk of cancer
You can start to see health benefits from losing even a small amount of weight.
5:11 I'm dying of laughter!!!!!
5:21 J RD: "It was one of the toughests".
Then I am wondering what was THE toughests?
I imagine Lord of the Rings was pretty bad given that he was allergic to the adhesive they used to apply the latex prosthetics to his face plus having to film a good portion of the movie on his knees.
I like how five wasnt mentioned at all.
Well, they brought him back for 5, which was great (l loved it, anyway, and a lot of people did or really liked it), so I guess the formula worked.
I thought this was going to be about Robot in the Family.
I would love to see Rosie get Spielberg onto the pod cast. That would have to be a 2 or 3 part series of episodes.
ask the crew of Blue Lagoon about the tropical ulcers and denge fever
"I am the monarch of the sea...."
This is tremendous!
What a storyteller!
"They're filming in the wrong spot!"
Glad he managed to survive🙂
"one of the toughest"
One of?!? What was tougher than that?
never work in the tropics became my motto fo life
Is he related to Mark Shephard? They both look similar.
Yeah, I didn't need to eat for a few hours.
Wait, i thought harrison ford improvised that part? He's making it sound like it was scripted
It was improvised, he's talking about what was originally planned - three pages in the script being thrown out because the gun moment was shown to work.
@@Elwaves2925 Thats why when you see him right before he pulls the gun he looks sick as hell, cause felt sick as hell.
This great actor is 80 this year.
It wasn't the lamb, it was "bad dates"
I'll never watch that movie the same way again 🤣
Filled my jelabaa Infront of 20 crew ...and...I didn't care😂❤
Dysentery is no joke.
I'm one of those that believe 2 is the best, followed by 3,1,4,5.
What a wonderful endorsement of Middle Eastern travel! =^[.]~=
Sorry John but part 5 is absolutely horrible and part 2 actually gets a tremendous amount of love these days. I really hope they release it on the big screen this year for 40th anniversary.
John looks really great.
Why is the help always masked?
He was a much better choice for Sallah than Danny DeVito.
Who's the clown wearing a mask? Seriously...
Raiders, Crusade, Destiny, Crystal, last Temple. No one likes to see there hero's grow old.
Camera spends more time on host than guest
Damn thats bad.
Bad dates
He got to be in 5, that it's the worst one
Bad dates…
Unfortunately he was in 5 and it was still shit so that theory goes out the window.
😂😂😂😂😂
Bet the guy wearing the mask has had 10 covid boosters.
Is he drunk?
