The high register sounds best with the classic, IMHO...
      More crisp...
As for my experience at my not so great level of trombone playing, I really leave the heavy blancked mpcs to large bore tenors or basses...

      Classic
The sound Is a bit darker than the Heritage
For Me the Heritage sound very similar to a Bach 6.5 AL

I tried the heritage but I feel fatigue and some pain in my mouth. And there was something in the sound that I like, but also play forte was difficult for me in the heritage

The tone of the heavy top is a more noticeable difference than I expected it to be. It has a GREAT full bodied tone! The other two were fairly close and tied for second place in my opinion.

I have a Dennis Wick Heritage 6BS and a Bach-style mouthpiece (no brand), and pretty much exclusively use the 6BS. One day, without realising, I picked up and used the unbranded one for a whole practice. I only realised at the end that I had the wrong mouthpiece, but the whole practice I was thinking "why is my upper register so crap today?" it literally was impossible for me to get stuff above G/A, it was a very weird feeling.

Yeah I agree...when you transition to the heavy top...it's smoothen out your sound throughout all ranges. I think once you adjust to it...your sound will be awesome! Heck I think I might get one and give it a shot.

I can tell you have played the Classic for a while. The Heavy top does sound smoother and the lower register has a nice tone with that mouth piece.

the heavy top with that horn sounds so full and great. not that the others sound bad or anything, just kinda sounds thin compared to the heavy top. heritage is a close 2nd tho.
have you ever tried one of those vintage Conn mouthpieces? like the conn 2 or 3. sounds super focused on a smaller bore horn

I have a few Wick Classics and I really love the sound vs the Bach and Yamaha mps I used to play (I use a Christian Lindberg with my small-bore 3B F-trigger and I absolutely love it) I actually just ordered a heavy top right before your video posted so I was psyched to see you comparing them. I’m inclined to believe that the heavy top will be your (and my) new favorite because of the additional material that should provide fuller and more controlled resonance…I recently purchased a 1949 Conn 6H and matched it with a Conn 3 mp and it gives that already jazzy horn an even more incredible vibe…you should try one of the Conns I think you will like the classic sound it imparts…almost forgot: 1 Heavy top 2 Classic and 3 Heritage

  • @wileytrombone

Per Wick, the *inner* dimensions of these mouthpieces should be the same, if I understand correctly. So, the rim width, inner rim diameter, cup size, throat and backbone. The differences, then, have to do with the "blank" the mouthpiece is cut from. I played the Classic version myself for a good long while, and I liked it on my Bach 36. Also per Wick, it's based on old version of the 61/2AL, but improved. The 6BS seems to be a bit larger than today's typical 61/2AL. As an indirect consequence, there are those who would say that this mouthpiece is a bit big for a .500 bore trombone. That's just like their opinion, man, but to be sure, this mouthpiece is no 11c, 12c, or 7c. Anyway, I found myself favoring the Classic, but it's subtle! The player perception subjective part does matter too, even though people try to eliminate it!

  • @EvanBeachy

personally i liked the heritage best. u should get a griego. the second i tried mine i went from hating tenor to loving it. the difference is immense. you are at the skill level where its time to get a mouthpiece custom fit to you. get away from the wick artist stuff. wicks are great at first but i played on a wick for years and the weights of them are either really light (classic or heritage) or way too heavy (heavytop)

  • @SeedRamples
    @SeedRamples 2 роки тому +3

It seems like you have either the most time played on the Heritage or are most used to mouthpieces of that same style. You seem to be well practiced on a soft mouthpiece with a deep cup.
While you would be able to sound just as good on any of the three with enough practice, you currently sound best on the Heritage. The classic makes your low notes harder to come out and not as clean. The heavy top makes your high notes muddy or sloppy. Note that those comments are exaggerated so as to be able to understand the difference between the three.

I think I’d go for Heritage, Classic, Heavy as my 1, 2, 3. But I like the sound of them all.
I still currently play my Yamaha YSL-354 that I’ve had for about 14 years (I’m looking to get a new ‘bone once I can afford to). It came with a Yamaha 45C2 which feels tiny (which it is, tbf) and airy. My teacher also then recommended a Bach 5GS which I still use. I think I will try out some Wicks when I next buy (a) mouthpiece(s).
Thanks for the music, wisdom and fun. I’ve already learnt and improved a lot thanks to you and your guests. Keep up the great work and much love to banana.

I recently bought the 6BS. However, I don’t really play enough to be a competent reviewer. I changed over from a Bach 61/2 Al. There’s a huge difference between the two. Air seems to flow much easier in the 6BS. I think the 6BS sounds more open and brighter to my ears. I like it better than the other two.

Those small differences are for most laypeople not audible but even for me as trumpet player, it's seems not worth the fuzz although a mouthpiece difference is probably much easier to hear acoustically in a big hall or inside an orchestra.
