In arranged marriages, they don't let the couple see each other until the actual wedding for fear they'd chicken out beforehand. That's where the "bad luck to see each other before the wedding" superstition comes from.
Honestly though, Emily's story is so heartbreaking. Fell in love with a man only for him to kill her the night of the wedding. I'm glad she found peace in the end. Also, Victoria's parents are scary and I'm glad she found Victor😅
I heard Tim Burton tried to sell this move concept to Disney just like he did with The Nightmare Before Christmas but they refused it because they didn´t like the idea of a sweet and innocent lady falling in love at first sight and being stabbed in the back by the person she thought she loved, but then 9 years later they did that with Frozen
@@a.g.demada5263 I think it's more metaphorical than actually moving on to some other place. In the land of the dead, there are so many dead folks from many different times and regions, and they are all having a great time, it doesn't look like anyone is waiting or even wanting to move on to some other place. Even the coachman is like, "Oh, guess I'm dead now, well, that's nice here, thanks for the beer." I mean, what's the dog waiting for? Or the old wise guy? When Victor suggests visiting his parents, Emily instantly replies, "Great, where are they buried?" It implies if someone's dead, they hang around somewhere and it's possible to visit them as long as you know where. Otherwise, she'd have said something like, "...unless they've moved on." Moving on and finding eternal peace at yet another place is never mentioned or implied as the final, ultimate goal or happy end. I think the end means she not only accepts the injustice of her fate as a final fact, but also lets go of her identity as "Corpse Bride" and returns to the land of the dead as Emily. In a way, Victor and Victoria get the classic happily ever after, and Emily gets a happily ever afterlife. I suppose they left the ending intentionally open to interpretation but it would have been nice if they had given us something that hints at an answer that makes sense in the context of the established story universe. Few facts about her: 1) the story is based off of Jewish folklore (think nymph/woman gets mistreated turned into a reed then that reed stabs the guy little more intense then the Greek/Roman versions) 2) there’s a likely hood she was strangled from behind as that’s why she’s blue, there’s a theory she’s hit over the head from behind so she doesn’t see him. Or that she froze to death. The clothing isn’t thermal it’s thin if she was knocked out and left she could have frozen to death during the night or after a rainfall (both likely in cold England) She’s half skeleton because he DIDNT bury her, she fell hard and fast. He left her there. That’s why she’s on the surface near the tree if anything he proper her against it. 5:14 I’d be interested in a video on Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory (1971) and Charlie & the Chocolate Factory (2005). They’re both their own adaptation of the original Dahl book and Tim Burton directed the second movie.
Some people prefer the 1971 film and some people prefer the 2005 one. Personally I prefer the 2005 one but I’m curious which one you’d choose. It’s important to keep in mind when comparing them that the second film is not a remake of the first, just adapting from the same source material.
Haven't seen anyone else comment this, but they made the world of the living and the underworld that way intentionally. To show how mundane and menial everything "upstairs" is while the dead "live" vibrantly and are free to do as they please. My favorite song is "Tears to Shed" and my favorite quote from the whole movie is Elder Gutknecht little pun: "Now why go up there when everyone is *dying* to get down here?"
If you really liked this movie, I suggest you watch either Coraline which is also a stop motion or Edward Scissorhands which stars Johnny Depp, Made by Tim Burton, and the music of Danny Elfman. Three legends rolled into one movie and it is very much like Corpse Bride, so I suggest you check it out. As always amazing job! See you next Sunday!
This Movie has a special place in my Heart. It was the first movie I borrowed from my local library. I forgot to give it back without watching it and had to pay 4 euros Penalty feea after that I searched for the movie everywhere because I really wanted to watch it. I found it again after 2 years and I loved it. The library somehow didn't have it anymore after that.
I love this movie, even when I was a child I was obsessed with it, although back then I didn’t fully understood what was going on. Is a beautiful movie. I love Emily and it was really sad what happened to her. She was reaching for something before dying, but is not necessary that she was buried alive, although is a good theory. Some people believe she was knocked out and left exposed, rain made the soil soft and started to swallow her corpse. Others said that she has been spying on Victor and put herself like that for the proposal. There are many theories. But yeah, she being knocked out with a blunt hit, left for dead, being buried while unconscious, waking up and trying to get out but failing to do so would explain the hand reaching out. Although he probably didn’t buried her deep enough. Some people believe Victor and Emily were soulmates, but unfortunately met too late.
Ftr, a chaperon for a young maid in particular is to make sure nothing naughty happens. Basically, no one thought young people could control themselves (which... you can make that argument XD) and instead of keeping an eye on the boys, it was customary to keep an eye on the girls.
Chaperone, in this context of the time the movie is set, is not a "babysitter". It's someone who should accompany a young woman who is not married. In some time periods young unmarried women shouldn't be around alone. That's why Victor asked where is Victoria's chaperone. Also, they wouldn't be allowed to be alone together before being married. But, of course, not all time periods had that. And wasn't common in all places.

Plus, if Lord Burkis _had_ left her alive, she would've run into town and alerted the authorities that he robbed her blind. If he'd planned for that to happen he would've taken the money and run away as far as he could. But he didn't run from the town. He still lives there in the movie's present day. He didn't run because he finished the job and buried her himself so that no one could ever convict him. He even had the foresight to woo her without her parents' knowing. He kept their relationship a secret from everyone so that no one could ever even tie Burkis to Emily's disappearance because nobody knew they had any association at all.
@@lauracerqueiramachado8979ngl that sounds like a homophobic theory. There’s nothing in the movie that suggests it, and it boils down to “gay men evil”
Uhm, no. Lol. He murdered and buried her in the woods. The shadow of him (on the wall) stabbed Emily to death, when the skeleton band was telling Victor what happened to her. Victor found her shallow grave...And it was made clear Lord Barkus was going to kill Victoria, as well. He was the male equivalent of a black widow.
@@DogsandPennies you’re not wrong, I heard that in a FanGirl’s (YT channel) theory
finally, a movie right up welchy’s lane
I'm so glad you realised Emily was left for dead and buried alive it's a detail so many people overlook on the first watch! Tim burton is fantastic definitely recommend watching Sweeny todd the demon barber of fleet street!
Loving the new neon sign! ☂
Thank you!
@@WelchyI own this movie
Welchy: She is a zombie! a few second later... Oooh a hot zombie.
Tim Burton had made some amazing movies!! You should definitely watch them. Him working with Johnny Depp, Winona Ryder and Helena Bonham Carter is just magical.
I must say: Welchy you are getting more handsome each Sunday
2:25 chaperones should be an adult who sticks with the unwed female when she would see her betrothed to keep anything scandalous from happening before the marriage.
5:04 his descriptions! Love the song giving backstory but not feeling boring.
6:44 there’s a theory this dogs life story is a trilogy in 3 Tim burton movies
14:43 Emily is truly a beautiful person and this shows it.
16:36 I think the land she was in was a purgatory or sorts. Her soul and herself found the peace she longed for and she can finally be free.
This is my favorite movie and has been since I saw it back in 2005. I absolutely love the music, the acting, the juxtaposition between the living and dead, everything. I saw the love and care into making the movie and the robotics used. It is amazing and I love it. I also really love the song Victor was supposed to sing that they cut for some reason.
11:30 - 11:33 Love that Welch used corpse husbands icon for that joke. I love seeing other youtubers that know corpse. Makes my tiny black dead heart feel warm.
That similarity of Emily and Victoria some theorize as no coincidence. The theory is that Emily was their daughter also, but Barkus killed her and took a large sum of the family wealth which has since depleted and leading to the arranged marriage of Victoria and Victor.
Why would Victoria not recognize her though?
And why wouldn’t Victoria’s parents recognize barkus when he came back around for Victoria’s wedding?
@@ivoryphoenix7 We don’t exactly know the time frame since her death, but perhaps when she was a kid? Or maybe not even born yet. Idk, I just brought up the theory since he pointed out Victoria and Emily had a resemblance to each other.
@@aboyle524 Maybe it was so long ago?
Really appreciate all the work you put into this ☂️
Copyright can go suck toes
Honestly for some reason it's always the bittersweet endings that feel the best in my opinion. Sure emily didnt get a lifelong partner in the end but she was set free and can finally rest in peace
0:36 how I knew he had never seen any other Tim Burton movie ever
For real. hahaha maybe he should've started with The Nightmare Before Christmas to get used to it first.
This was my favourite movie as a child! I always loved the use of color in this movie and the musiic. Idk how many times I have rewatched it! I love the new umbrella
Welchy's reaction to Emily's sneaking up on Victor made me laugh so hard that it literally bought tears to my eyes! 😂
Great video, Welchy! #TeamEmily 👏🏽
This is my all time fav movie aswell as my comfort movie. When I get married my isle walking song will be the one Victor plays on the Piano when Victoria walks down the stairs. I can't even tell you how many times I've watched this movie😅💕
Emily deserved better 🥺
This is literally my favorite movie in the world. I haven’t watched the video yet, but I already know I’m gonna love this.
You need to watch more Tim Burton movies, especially the ones with Johnny Depp!
14:10 At least the dead has some manners.
agree.
WELCHYYYY YAAAY FINALLY, and OMG YES I felt terribly bad for Emily when I watched this growing up :(( But I gotta say, the wedding vows are beautiful
This was my childhood. Loved this movie- was fully obsessed with it. Doesn’t help that my name is Victoria XD
Bro you just hit 75K subscribers we should celebrate🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
😊
* gasps * WE SHOULD! CONGRATS WELCHY!
Emily deserves the world❤
If you really liked this movie, I suggest you watch either Coraline which is also a stop motion or Edward Scissorhands which stars Johnny Depp, Made by Tim Burton, and the music of Danny Elfman. Three legends rolled into one movie and it is very much like Corpse Bride, so I suggest you check it out. As always amazing job! See you next Sunday!
4:08
LOL! Welchy got scared again!
😜
I'm so happy Welchy watched Corpse Bride!
It's a classic and I love to watch it every Halloween 💙
I love the way you roast the characters in this movie. I love this movie and to hear you say those things are super hilarious.
The gagging had me in tears😂
1:56
Jesus i forgot that smiling looks PHYSICALLY PAINFUL FOR THIS CHARACTER
LMAO sorry the ending when you're just like "f*ck off dumbledore"
Emily was dead the whole time but she’s at peace now. No more rotting in purgatory, she went to heaven.
Off topic, i love the umbrella light in the background ❤
The best early birthday present ever!! Thank you Welchy!!! One of my favorite movies ever!
I choked on my drink when you said f off dumbledore 😂😂
"Breathing's overrated"
My brain: yeah right. Not even billionaires care about it. They even pay quarter a million not to breathe....
I forgot how much I love your CHAOTIC reactions!! 🤣
AGH welch this is one of my favourite movies- this vid probably brought me back to life after your barbie reactions
Another burdon-johnny dep classic is Edward scissorhands and sleepy hollow
7:34 I laughed more for the crickets then the joke! 😂
"Corpse Bride" is one of my favourite movies. Also you really got me with sloppy seconds comment.
OMGGGG MY FAVE MOVIE, was NOT expecting Welchy to react to this.
“F off Dumbledore” had me in tears
Ok less than 2 minutes in and the reaction to the character design is great 😂
Ftr, a chaperon for a young maid in particular is to make sure nothing naughty happens. Basically, no one thought young people could control themselves (which... you can make that argument XD) and instead of keeping an eye on the boys, it was customary to keep an eye on the girls.
“Oh you murdered your bride you betch!”
Welchy -2023
0:10 time to watch my favorite movies get dissed. Here we go
I was wrong lol
Chaperone, in this context of the time the movie is set, is not a "babysitter". It's someone who should accompany a young woman who is not married. In some time periods young unmarried women shouldn't be around alone.
That's why Victor asked where is Victoria's chaperone. Also, they wouldn't be allowed to be alone together before being married.
But, of course, not all time periods had that. And wasn't common in all places.
its almost as if they sang about how Emily died in the Remains of the Day song.. when Victor first woke up in the land of the dead XD
✨MY CHILDHOOD✨ 🦋💙 Victor better call Becky with the good hair 😂
2:33
Welchy! Do you not recognize the booming voice of Christopher Lee?!
😳
Dracula?
Saruman from Lord Of The Rings?
Count Dooku from Star Wars?
Tim Burton has so many amazing movies. I'm glad you watched this one at least
Such an underrated movie!! Emily deserves the best
I love this movie so much!! So glad to see you reacting to it!!
This is such a classic always a good story to play at any time of the year :>
You got it right from the beginning 😂 that was Tim Burton's intention, the world of "the living" looks more dead than the other one
“Well, he doesn’t look dead”, famous last words.
You HAVE to watch Coraline my dude !!!!...Also...love your commentaries !!
Emily + Victor forever
You have to see barbie in a mermaid tail 2 it's Soo cool
I freaking love this movie so much 💙
One of my favorite movies
I love how the first minute of this video has been nothing but confusion.
Yes this movie is glorious but I found it funny when Welchy was saying it wasn’t the end😂 I was like oh yes it is😅 but then his reaction to the credits had me dying🤣🤣
There are some like those. 😊
Coraline
Box trolls
Paranorman
Nightmare before Christmas
WELCHY THIS IS MY FAVOURITE MOVIE!!!!!!!!!!
So glad you watched this! Absolutely adore this movie and have since I was a kid ❤ it was the theme to my 16th birthday 😅 I know not conventional but it was fun ❤❤❤ love Emily
It’s funny that everyone is commenting before actually watching the video lol
