  • I get a lot of questions about "being stuck" or having the club out of position behind you as you come through the ball.
    Here's what I feel with my right elbow in my downswing that helps me get the club in position to consistently hit my long irons and fairway woods.

    Mike - this was my aha moment in feel vs real & the need for exaggeration of thought to embed the actual swing - boy what a difference it makes - am 60 yrs old & playing off a 6.8 & really believe with the less effort & more distance that I can halve that handicap now - hope to visit one day when the borders are open - thank you from New Zealand .- cheers Rob

    It really hurt my swing. I was told, "get the right elbow down in front". I wish I had never listened to that advice. I couldn't ever get there and trying to ruined my game. Now, partially thanks to you Mike, I'm playing much better never even thinking about it. Good vid.

    Kudos to you for trying to explain the difficult concept. My 2 bobs worth on why you get stuck is because weight is still mainly on back foot and you stop rotating your shoulders. The old "rock and block" technique. Its difficult to be stuck if you continue to rotate your shoulders all around your front leg

    I think you are the first instructor I’ve seen who is not obsessed with getting the trail elbow in front of the hip. I’ve always thought you have to be a contortionist to do it as much as most people seem to demonstrate. Thank you.

    Watching a video of Ben Hogan on the practice tee in 1953, his elbow in the impact zone - is clearly not leading ahead of his right hip - it is right over his right-pocket, his arm in the position you indicate. In some of his swing 'demos' he over exaggerates that right elbow getting tucked in - probably because that is what it felt like to him, and not what he was really doing.... and like you say, what we actually do and what we feel in the golf swing can be much different things. Interestingly, that applies to everyone, even the greatest pro golfers of all time. Thanks for the continued insight.

    Allways come back to your videos when something starts going wrong with my swing.
    Allways get a solution to what I'm doing...started getting a fade that turned into hitting cuts and slices, that I couldn't solve on the course.
    Onto your videos and I realise that I was standing a bit far from the ball and getting the trail elbow ahead, making me lead the handle through, leaving the clubhead behind and the face being open through impact...
    So simple, but I couldn't "feel" it until I just watched this video and realised...👌

    Thank you so much Mike. You have helped me solve a hunch. I notice that Trevino really slid his right elbow toward the target (especially w his wedges) for a lot of his control. Johnny Miller talked about his right elbow being glued to his right hip for control. Also it looks to me like Hogan would sort of stall his right elbow to launch the club. Does any of this make sense? Can you stall the right elbow for power and sort of slide it for control? Then obviously have a normal timing that isnt so extreme.

    Most ams get the right elbow behind their hip in transition (trapped)
    Getting it in front or at least on the right hip allows you to maintain your impact alignments longer so you're less likely to flip...

    Hey mike I did a lesson with Ashley, I have the opposite of his issue, my elbow gets too far behind. My lower body seems to spin out, left shoulder high, which gives the look of a cast but in reality it’s not my lower body out races me sooo fast that if gives that look to illusion. I’ve shot in the 60s and can break par that way but the same week I can shoot a sub par round I can go be 6/8 over.... any videos on that?

    • @barryread3672
      @barryread3672 5 років тому

      That's been my issue for a long, long time. Something that helps me when I get "happy hips" is my only thought is to keep my trail foot glued to the ground until after impact. Be aware that you may be sliding back into your backswing instead of turning your trail hip towards the target...this could also cause you to spin your hips open. Damn hard game some days, lol.

  • @thomasfraser9072
    @thomasfraser9072 4 роки тому

    Hi Mike I agree one hundred percent that the trail elbow and hip must turn into the ball together and does not go in front of the hip.
    However. "Feel" as if your right elbow is behind you ( as you shallow the club); but you won't actually do it?
    I agree with you telling people not to deliberately shove the right elbow inwardly in front of theirs trail hip And in order to compensate I supposes the feeling of doing the opposite might work for those who do shove their elbow in front of their trail hip.
    However it is the nerve endings of the radial and ulnar bones that makes up the trail elbow that communicate subconsciously to the rest of the body as well as what the trail hands and wrists are doing at any given time throughout the swing Never the other way a around.
    With this in mind simply use your 'magic trail elbow'. Have this one swing thought and forget about the rest.
    Shift the trail elbow back on the back swing and then with deliberate quickness; shift the trail elbow forward on the transitional part of the downswing. Allow the rest of the body to turn/ shift in response naturally to your trail elbow shifting back and forth during the entire swinging of the club and at a blink of an eye; I promise you will see a miracle happen. Cheers
    I hope you realize what I am saying is true and you highlight my statement. Cheers

    What do think about lowering or squat in ds ? I'm working on this with the Malaska move. It seems to get me more club head speed . Any thoughts any of y'all Malaska golfers ?

    • @Batwing2465
      @Batwing2465 5 років тому

      Hey Paul, IMHO. Mike's downswing/transition videos reference "pushing away" which is about moving away from the mass (clubhead) to create the centripetal force (swinging camera bag or basket of balls) and increase clubhead speed (snapping the towel). The "effect" of this naturally lowers your level initially (transition) to offset the forces and maintain balance, but I wouldn't encourage trying to squat down. Trying to just create the effect to me just adds a "timing" issue not unlike trying to create the "effect" of lag versus the natural forces causing lag.

    • @BamaPaul
      @BamaPaul 5 років тому

      Batwing2465 yep thanks for replying I think doing what he talks about the hip actually goes toward the target at start of ds. Which that would be opposite of club head starting down in transition.Watching his swing in videos he does lower some which is using the ground. His technique is awesome been using this a lot in past year. Cheers

      I agree. Once I learned to get my elbow in front and shallow my swing, I am hitting better than ever. I try to get the feeling that I am losing an arm wrestling match at the top of the backswing and at the start of the downswing. The angular momentum that results has you flonging the ball farther than you ever imagined.

  • @toddkoehler0418
    @toddkoehler0418 5 років тому +3

    This is the worst instruction you can teach to an amateur. Most amateurs keep there right elbow up during the downswing and release the club way too soon resulting in scooping through impact. This might be great for an advanced golfer but most students who take lessons shoot over 100.

    • @Batwing2465
      @Batwing2465 5 років тому +1

      Seriously Wiseguy? You've chosen to discredit Mike's tutelage because he sticks a peg in the ground whenever he displays the motion for the subject he's teaching? This truly doesn't even warrant a comment from Mike, but I'd bet his eyes rolled a few times if he even read this. I can't speak for why Mike puts a peg in the ground, but he also doesn't do it every time. When I taught, I would do the same when demonstrating the motion of the movement at a much slower pace then a stock shot in an effort for the students to visually see the motion. Remember proper contact with irons and even Hybrids and some fairway woods requires compression of the ball against both the face of the club and the turf to achieve proper trajectory and distance. Lastly, when I taught and asked students to work on various movements or drills that included hitting a ball, I had them put the ball on a peg so they wouldn't be focused on club contact with the ground, but more the swing path and face of the club.
      What Mike is teaching is by far more beneficial for not only your average amateur golfer, but for most professionals. Not only that, he has the playing resume to back up his teaching methodology, which the majority of teachers don't have. Not even the so called teaching gurus that make up the "Revolution Golf" have the same pedigree. I would encourage you not dwell on this issue but actually listen to what he is teaching and apply the appropriate changes to whatever ails you in your golf game. This guy can flat out play. Do some research and then be grateful that you're getting such quality instruction at such an incredible price. FREE!!!!!!! Or, keep looking for the "secret" and keep slinging the mud hoping something will stick. Good luck to you.

      Wiseguy, I don't teach golf for a living anymore. It's now a hobby and activity I'm passionate about, and everyone is certainly entitled to their opinion on any subject matter, including golf. My reply wasn't about my golf instruction and I simply have nothing I need to prove. I was offended that you based your opinion on one's teaching ability simply because they put a ball on a tee, and I should have just said that because that analysis speaks volumes. Thanks for the good luck wishes and I wish you success in your golf pursuits.
