J-plugs were a staple on our charter boat. Glow in the dark are awesome. A secret we learned back in the 80’s is on the chrome ones, we’d paint the face diving area bright red. I used my moms fingernail polish on the first one. Every fish the next day came off the red face plug
I learned a lot from your video. It reinforced what others have said regarding running your stacker presentation behind your bottom rig. Would the j- plug style plug be appropriate for other species of salmon? I fish Lake Huron and we have Atlantics and Cohos.
Great Vlog. We caught our 3 Big Kings on the # 5 in Bone Glow with the Pink Head. Before and during Sunrise. Thanks for that tip on Stacking. Keep Jacking those Donkey Kings. Lol
Great video, thanks. I have a question. You mentioned running a stacker with the d/f below the plug. I'm assuming it's two rods with a stacker style release. Isn't there a risk of the two lines tangling if they're running close?
No, so I realized after the fact that I used the term “stack” which typically is associated with what you mentioned. What I am referring to in this video is separate lines but you’re placing the plugs near the F/F like within 5/10ft both horizontally and vertically. Hope that makes sense
I haven’t nor would i want to do it. Plug has enough action to draw fish in. I don’t think a flasher is needed plus you’d have to run a long lead so it doesn’t impact the plug action.
Fall time is one of the best times because you don't necessarily need to go out into open water. But in general its all weather dependent. Try to link up with a more experienced LM kayak angler to go out and learn from
They are a staple here in Canada made the old lyman's sell for some crazy amounts up towards 100 dollars for one normally the stairway to heaven one is what everyone wants with painted eyes
Yellow cedar. But now, the lymans, (which are the best) are plastic. But also, the cedar plugs are made using screw-in terminal tackle. 100% their weak-point.
@@ChiCityYaker you have a good channel....lived in Chicago early 2000's fished Waukegan, Racine.....bobber skein harbor guy.....smashed them!!! had a small 14 foot.....trolled Port Washington and Racine......nice Kings off the fall run.....live back in Michigan now.....heading to Frankfort next week!!! rock on brother!!! rock on!
I have with a spin doctor 8inch with a 6 foot lead and have had amazing luck with that set up I use best lure co plugs and the old layman's which best lure brought out

Don't even think you can find the red head chrome unless someone custom paints it but I have some other red head ones and they do well.
@@ChiCityYaker we painted our own as well
@@ChiCityYaker that red-head chrome, i think it was called the cut-plug, caught us our biggest rainbow trout, just shy of 20 lbs.
The silver horde plug that slides up the line is simply called a silver horde plug, the fixed style silver horde is called a silver horde ace-hi plug.
Ever use northport nailer plugs/spoons/flies? Their prices seem really fair.
I have not, yet

Coho will take plugs for sure. I tend to use the smaller size for them specifically but big Coho will take the bigger plugs too.

will do! Thanks
Very informative,
I always appreciate the information, thanks!
You bet!
can you run these on a 6 ft leader from your sinker weight?
I have a box full of old J plugs I had passed down to me. Pop always said they were killer.
Throw them out there!
Great info...again! Thanks and tightest of lines!
Glad it was helpful!

I got some silver hordes and they have a stainless ring atop the bead chain preventing the harness from pulling thru.
Cut that off rightvaway
Have you ever tryed running the plug behind a flasher? Or would it track all over the place?

Can you use a diver since I don’t have a downrriger ?
I’ve been thinking of fishing Lake Michigan but not too sure how safe it is with my kayak to be honest

No problem!
Have you ever heard of lymans or best lure co which is made out of white cider wood
I have not

Is there a specific reason your tandem hooks are tied with braid or Dacron?
Tomic plugs best on the market made in BC.
That’s how they come out of the packaging
J-Plug is a Luhr Jensen product.
I usually fish from the bank, you think these would work if I’m fishing from the bank or are these lures mostly for trolling?
Trolling
Throw the 4 3/4in x rap, custom spray paint it yourself
j plug sizing is 4 and 3 to match horde 5 and 4.....chrome silver bullet!!!
Thanks for pointing that out.

So is it bad idea to put J Plug behind a flasher?
I'd personally never do it but you can try it if you wanted I suppose.

Speed??
You can run them slow or fast, they're very speed tolerant. I just mix it up to see what the fish want as far as speed goes.
Trolling speed?
1.8 to 2.5 are usually the range for me
No such thing as Silver Horde J-Plug
Technically you're right but the average angler will refer to them all as a J-Plug. Makes it easier to just refer to them as such imo.
I’ve always referred to them as Tomic plugs
@@mememachine3451 Tomic is another brand made in Canada. Great plugs, my go to is the #602.
