  • Today we take a look at one of the Dominions most infamous Officers. Vorta Weyoun. having lived many lives through his multiple clones Weyoun is one of the Dominions most talented diplomats, though a poor tactician. since the war he has been seen as a symbol of dominion duplicity and dishonesty. but is Weyoun truly the Machivellian mastermind he is made out to be? or in fact a misguided yet gentle soul put to terrible purpose.

    Imagine being such a screen chad that the guys making the sci fi show you played a one shot character on, went ahead and adjusted the lore just to get you back as a recurring guest star

    The First time we saw Weyoun, Weyoun 4 wasn’t he in charge of a special ops mission? To stop renegade Jem’hedar from activating an Iconian gateway? Sounds like the Dominion would have placed one of their most loyal servants in charge.

    While I agree that Weyoun was a rather interesting and complex character... I always felt like something was 'off' with him. Looking back and remembering his interactions, he comes across as quite a sociopath.... As if his outward affability was a facade over something monstrous. I came away with the impression that he'd casually order the extermination of hundreds of planets while breezily deciding what to have with his tea. The only time his true self came through was in his utter worship of the Founders.

      He didn't ever seem like the kind to resort to overkill, but he did casually discuss glassing Earth. Basically, he was convinced that once they had conquered the Federation, they should exterminate Earth's population and glass the planet since it was the mostly likely centre for rebellion.

    The Weyouns are indeed quite the introspective character. Indeed yeah, thinking about it, if not for the system he was in, he did have a better side to him, shown in Weyoun-6 in that one DS9 episode, and in Weyoun-9 in some of the books, both events involving Odo. And from the shows and beyond, he/they do have quite the roller-coaster of events between Weyoun-1 and Weyoun-10.
    It also provides much interesting thought about both the nature and the environment of the Vortas.

    I think Weyoun is very much a creature at odds with himself. But that is to be expected given the nature of his construction. But he also suffers from the pain that many courtiers and diplomats have over the centuries: How does a good man serve bad men? Often times these servants are well aware of the evil of their leaders, or the impending doom that arise from their decisions, but are compelled to continue to serve thanks to a code of honor. Or, in this case, due to genetic makeup which, in the end, were unbreakable chains. William Marshall knew King John was a disaster, but was saved by John's death from making the decision to break form him. Talleyrand saw through Napoleon and more or less turned against him in 1808 once it was clear that he would never stop, and actively worked against him from 1810 on. Weyoun saw what the Founders were doing, knew it would probably not end well, but was compelled to obey to the very end.

    "Diplomacy is simply conquest by other means." That´s a very intelligent line. The other half of the coin is: "War is politics by other means." Our world works exactly like that and one could add: "Economy is politics is war by other means."

    Yeah Weyoun was the perfect vorta to Lead the dominion bureaucracy during peacetime, but was badly ill equipped to be a wartime leader and if it were not for controlling the access to the female founder and holding all her trust would have been replaced as one of the dominions leading commanders.

    Weyoun was like a mirror of the Federation and its diplomatic values, that believed that they could solve any problem with diplomacy. I mean if he was working in and on behalf of the federation...imagine what he would get done. Put him in a starfleet uniform and hes almost a perfect Federation diplomat.

  • @garyporter2862
    @garyporter2862 4 місяці тому +2

    I don't think weyoun was demoted when we first see him. They were hunting dominion traitors and that Iconian gateway tech. I think he was there to get rid of the traitors and get that tech. He was there because he is a believer and a loyalist. If I was a founder Weyoun is a vorta I would trust to get deal with some sensitive situations. He is a believer a fanatic. That is why one of them tried to serve odo when he found out the changelings were sick.

    • @weldonwin
      @weldonwin 4 місяці тому

      It's also almost certainly Weyoun-4, who infected Odo with the Morphagenic virus while on the same mission to destroy the Jem'Hadar rebels. in order to force him to return home for trial. Again, it's a sign of his high esteem with the founders that they trusted him with these two key missions

    • @bloodysimile4893

    • @weldonwin
      @weldonwin 4 місяці тому

      @@bloodysimile4893 No, the Founders infected Odo with a Morphagenic virus in order to force him to return home, to stand trial for having killed another Changeling. Section 31, just created their own Homebrew Morphagenic virus to kill off the Founders, possibly based off data from Doctor Bashir's attempts to treat Odo

    Been watching some of the previous Dominion War episodes as you get ready to cover the final invasion, and wonder some people's thoughts. And Weyoun would be very much at the center.
    Suppose that for whatever reason Section 31 had been successful and all the known Founders were wiped out. How would the Dominion react? When it was originally presented, the Dominion in the Gamma Quadrant basically ran itself with almost no contact with the Founders at all. Would it continue to operate that way without the Founders? How about in the Alpha Quadrant? Senior Vorta like Weyoun would be left leading the Dominion - would it fragment around those Vorta. How would Dominion religious belief be impacted (ex. do they know about the other changeling infants sent throughout the galaxy that had never been found and would be virus free. Would the religion become a "quest to find the lost gods?" so to speak.) Weyoun was totally devout to the religion so I do wonder if it would have become more a "band" or "house" type structure like the old Imperial Klingons.
    Just curious as a what-if and how things might have gone differently.

    Maybe the first few Weyoun had great diplomatic abilites. But Weyoun 7, 8, and 9 were all stupid. They caused the Cardassians to rebel by sacrificing 500,000 Cardassians to the Klingons and was willing to give away some of their planets to the Breen... And a final brillaint plan to destroy Lacarian city and 2 million Cardassian civilians to send a message to Damar and his supporters caused a mass uprising by the fleet... It was probably a blessing for Dominion that thanks to Damar they cant make anymore Weyoun clones...

    • @bloodysimile4893
      @bloodysimile4893 4 місяці тому

      I said it was more of the Founder doing rather than Weyoun doing as the Founder was becoming less and less rational because they were dying, and likely wanted to see their enemies dead before their time.
      Qoute by the Founder: I would promise the Breen the entire Alpha quadrant if it means winning the war.
      Dominion work best in long term, but when on a time clock, make foolish decisions. If Weyoun had time or Dominion in a better position, an alliance between Cardassins and Breen would have been smoother.

    Considering the power of the Dominion it's very interesting and a pit realistic in IRL 20/20 hindsight that Weyoun probably did think that with at least the right people at the top peace with even just the Federation was possible just not the the leadership at the time assuming that the producers of DS9 were right and the Dominion did know about the Federation at least a 100 years before 2369 and the Klingons and Romulans I'd imagine the Founders would have been both alarmed and surprised the not only did the Federation form a alliance with the Klingon Empire but had avoided a war with the Romulans and had survived the Borg and other encounters they likely had believed that at worst the Federation would have in 100-(140 years according to Producers) become very hawkish and of a similar mindset both could become friends or enemies what thay got was a mixed bag suer the sanding of USS Defiant was hawkish but they were in the end looking for peace the USS Defiant at the time was more expandable that the USS Odyssey was the Federation was if anything willing to take risks my bet Wayuon was a risk taker too or at least would be willing to take a chance if the return to the Dominion was high enough

    If Weyoun was in charge of frist contract with Federation and other alpha/ beta powers, using diplomacy to take control, Dominion would have won without firing a shot.
    But Dominion over played their hand, expose their true attention when they frist appear in Ds9 show as over aggressive, massacring colonies, destorying Odyssey, using tricky to test Federation reaction with mind prodes. It clear the Dominion didn't care how they
    Quirk and others who think the Dominion can be reason with and live co-side, as Jonathan Frakes once said, "It complete fiction." The broken genetic Engineer said the Dominion play the long game, normally willing to give up short term gain for long ones. And don't forget the victims of Dominion with quickening vuris, being whole planet to a fate worse then death.
    The joint orders is a perfect example of how Dominion rewrite one civilization own culture, slowly decay the existing culture and manipulate the people to service the founder without realizing how they fallen so far. Cardassins were lucky, the war ended as soon as it did insteading falling into 1984.
    For Founder: "What you can control, can't hurt you."
    Sisko: "The founder see it as their duty to bring order to the galaxy. Their order."

    How is the Dominion 'corrupt' or 'evil'? The Dominion has maintained internal peace for 4000 years, operated artificial soldiers so it's people don't have to fight, and maintains an empire bigger and better than the federation in every way. And your mood music is gloomy. Weyoun is nice in a world of jerks, he believes in peace, he's willing to die for the cause without complaint. And he never breaks his prime directive (to serve the founders). There should be marching theme music and fireworks for Weyoun. If Federation officers were more like Weyoun, you wouldn't have to do so many documentaries about starfleet constantly going to war.
