    This is exactly what I was looking for - real-world audio sampling with the H1! So many other videos are just demoing it’s dialog/VO capabilities - which is sort of missing the point of what it was designed to do. Thanks!

    for people who cant tell the difference its more than likely you are not listening through decent headphones - 1:48 section onwards there is a world of difference between the H1 and H4 recordings, so much clearer and defined sound in the H4 that starts at 1:58 compared to H1.

    to be honest i as im experianced in lots of differant mics the h1 had a warmer sound than the h4 but the h4 had better stereo image and the treble was more controled but so marginally that no one would care

    @mikelb77 Well, I don't think the main purpose of this video was to showcase the quality... it's more of a comparison, in which case, the most important factor (IMO) would be equal distance instead of optimal recording distance.

    Seems to me the H1 picks up better lows. And the H4n picks up better high ends. There are parts where I like the H1 better and parts where I like the H4n better. The scary part is they both sound better than the AKG's. And those things cost 500 bucks each.

  • @saucierdavid8109

    Great audio test video. The H4N certainly has a broader spectrum, however; it almost seems artificial. This is why I would lean more toward the H1.

    So, Zoom H4n does tremenduously better job at stereopicture and presence, which is high frequencies.
    At mid frequencies sometimes I like H1 more. At low frequencies H1 sound more full, though H4n has very distinctive attack.
    Overall, H4n has so much presence that going from H1 -> H4n I feel like going from old recording to an actual room.

  • @giammyzanna
    @giammyzanna 12 років тому

    I'm pretty much in the same situation. Did you regret buying it? The h4n has brighter sound, less muffled. But for more than 2x the price I don't care too much.

  • @AhmadEdinHodzic
    @AhmadEdinHodzic 11 років тому

    Its because h4 is set to capture 180 * and h1 has only stacionary mick so h4 can pick up more than h1 but sound quality is the same .

  • @rickyle6519
    @rickyle6519 11 років тому +1

    h1 and h4 were very similar in the first half(guitar test). The second half is where you really start to notice the difference. the h1 was a lot more muffled especially at the high end and not as clear as the h4n overall. Although the placement of the recorders were not given in the second half, it probably was the defining factor. Close quarters h1 and h4n sound very similar, but for task where distance is a factor, h4n performs significantly better.

  • @Chinookman

    I've got no horse in this race. The H1 and H4n were nearly identical on my phone speaker so I threw on a pair of Sony Professional Studio Monitor MDR-7506 which do not color sound. I agree with those indicating superior stereo imaging/separation of the H4n. It has a more pleasing sound especially in the higher frequencies and feels lime a much wider sound stage. I was thinking of getting the H1 and may well still for the $100 US price differential. I will be recording voice so good enough is good enough. I believe the H1 in this example is quite good enough. If I were a musician and comparing the 2 I would spend for the H4n, no question!

  • @m0rjc

    Does sound tempting, though I do fancy the 4 track capabilities and XLR ins on the H4n, for use with my existing mics.

  • @mikelb77
    @mikelb77 13 років тому

    Not to troll at all, but couldn't placement of mics/recorders have more of an effect than the recorder itself? All units are placed as close as possible, but in my experience (especially with mic'ing electric guitar amps), two or three inches can literally make all the difference.
    Just thinking out loud here though. Thanks for posting the video! Well shot and very thoroughly planned. Definitely an interesting concept either way!

  • @noxlupi1
    @noxlupi1 13 років тому

    actually i in my eyes, the H1 is the better product.. its cheap, you put it in your pocket, reach your destination, and press record and you have your self a nice high quality recording! The expensive H4n, Fiddling with DSP processors, compressor settings and 4 channel audio, external mic etc etc.. just pulls the whole concept apart! its a pocket recorder for god sake.. not a portable studio.. use it for sketching songs and stuff nothing else. :)

  • @zgrafsoftware
    @zgrafsoftware 13 років тому

    OK, I have to admit my bias -- I want the H1 to win. Maybe I'm doing an injustice to the H4. I don't know. But I do know this.
    The H1 retails fr $100 and the H4 for $250. In order to buy the H4, I would need it to sound 150% better than the H1. Clearly, as shown in this video, it doesn't.

  • @zgrafsoftware
    @zgrafsoftware 13 років тому

    I think the H1 sounds better than the H4. H1 seems to have better bass response also. But I think the Zoom H1 level is slightly higher than the H4. So it's not a totally fair apples-to-apples. Need to match levels to with 0.1 dB before you can do an accurate comparison.

    h4 appears to have a better dynamic range but thats just EQ, the H1 just misses a bit of presence at the very top and bottom. the H4 has a completely different and more enhanced spacial rendition. H4 seemed to handle the resonance of the chord at the end better too although it may be that it was played more softly. very subtle differences!

  • @nickdini
    @nickdini 11 років тому

    You yre right. H4n sounds much better and clearer on high frequences. Do You think it's like that more because of better mics or better internal mic preamps? I ask because i'm curious what would they sound like when recording from line in. Thanks for your opinions

    To me H4n has a flatter spectrum and a wider stereo image then the H1. Nothing you cant compensate 90 percent for in post. so if you dont need internal compression and 4 channel rec. external xlr mic. It is not worth the extra money.

    Maybe it's the setting, I don't know, but the H1 sounds a teensy bit dull compared to the dynamic H4N. But for 1/4 the price, the H1 is AMAZING. Plus, nothing a little EQ tweak won't fix to match the H4N.

    Awesome test, but for a wide price difference H1 is just as good in my opinion. I'd be happy with the H1 for the price. The AKG mics sounded best on the Metal guitar in my opinion, but overall the H4n takes its.
    It seems like the H1 gave a warmer sound, but the H4Nn gave the widest range in my opinion.
    Great test, keep up the good work. =]

  •  13 років тому

    hi again ;] Can anyone tell me, how does H1 work when it's used with high gain settings, like recording guitar and vocals from distance of 2-3 meters? Is there a lot of hum?

  • @m0rjc
    @m0rjc 12 років тому

    Different but both good. The comment below about boosting treble would sound right I think. So it's XLR inputs and 4 track or not really, and large difference in cost. I assume the H1 has line in so can be connected to a mixing desk - which would cover my usages of sound effects recording and recording of the final show. I currently use old mini-disk equipment.

  • @TobyBurt

    You wouldn't generally use a matched stereo pair of small condensers as close mics for a main vocal take - SM58 (and my fave the SM57) are industry standard mics that get used for vocals often in studios, Remember though, the SM58 is made with live performance in mind and over all of these a large diaphragm condenser is what you would expect to use in a studio unless you are Anthony Kiedis.

  • @thefishdog

    h4n has wider stereo and better dynamics, seems to pick up more sound in the whole of the room. H1 had a lot of highs and more centred sound but its very good.

    Fantastic test! I have a Zoom H4n and a Zoom H1. Zoom H4n, in comparison, has more bass response. But if I don't record with both, Zoom H1 in manual control level has a good performance. I think You have recorded with Zoom H4n in XY 90*, not XY120*, it's right?

  • @rayliam80

    So I listened to the video through a Focusrite Saffire 2i4 USB audio interface and a set of Beyerdynamic DT990 Pro headphones I noticed the subtle differences between the H1 and H4n. The H1 had a more pronounced narrow stereo field. The H4n had a much wider stereo field but I felt like at times the sound was too thin for my liking. It really depends on your goals with what you want to accomplish with either of these devices. Voice/Interviews/DSLR audio - H1. Music/Sound Effects/Sampling - H4n.
