Lecture: Derrick May (Melbourne 2006)
Derrick May is one of the founding fathers of the Techno genre.
How come May hasn't written a book. He is so well spoken!
lol I always loved how Derrick is such a jokester.
this man is just dropping all this unbelievable invaluable knowledge!! I am grateful i could experience the era when these guys were making first their music. Much respect!
Derrick Seems like a great humble and intelligent guy to hang out with.
"Humble" is the last word that comes to mind
I gotta say, being from Detroit, Derrick says a lot of true stuff about the city. He has so many really thoughtful points which he makes about creativity and art as well.
Me too, He is a great spokesmen for the genre and its history. :)
derrick is great such a modest guy.
Really he's switching between playfully arrogant and modest and it's not quite clear how serious he is about be difficult.
Derrick May make good traxs move it and kaos are still good stand out traxs to me. The list goes on and on. Thanks Derrick
Much respect. Legend. Intelligent. Inspirational. Cliché I know, but truly admire this guy.
I got my first copy of Strings of life from Buyrite. Nude Photo from Detroit Audio on 6 Mile.
superb stuff. really enjoyed that..
48:00 how right you were, how much is that $8k desk worth now??
We miss hearing your sets in Detroit, its just so bad for house here that its nuts. We dont even have a club downtown any more. "WTF"
The greatest DJ of all time!
Derrick,,, man that turntable is a Vestax designed by Dj Qbert..
i love watching interviews but a 2 hour interview god damm lol
From what I just see , the most interesting part comes at 1:29:30 from a audience question
right
This is so great, its my birthday tomorrow! I totally wish lol
Anybody who can tell me the name of the artist of the last record he played? Something like dennis di santos? can't seem to find it.. and indeed a very inspirational lecture, people can learn a lot from him
Him & bush haha you are awesome ♡
Strings of life and live on it forever.Such an attraction for the milky seeing an afro..Respect anyway.
Awesome!
a peace king...
all sass love it
Heartbreaking to learn of all the accusations 😩
But not surprising
Kraftwerk at Top of the Pops. UA-cam suggests that it was a hoola hoop performance with Kraftwerk in the background. They wern't really there.
Sorry I can't help you. But I found the video on the Red Bull Music Academy website. Maybe they mention it somewhere on the website. Because sometimes they do this because of copyright reasons.
Don't speak if it isn't the truth right on
interesting & extremely annoying to listen at the same time ... because of those 2 guys and also because of the production RED BULL: make some money ready for a post-production and a more audible experience for web-viewers ... YOU GOT THE CHIP$ FOR THAT
I've watched many interviews with Mr May and he always comes across as a little bitter, like he has had a chip on his shoulder.
Yes you are right. It is kind of weird because if you hear his friends like Kevin Saunderson talking about him then you get the impression that it is really a fun guy. But I think that he just becomes in this serious mode once a interviewer starts asking question. And if you think about it there where 3 legends. And Derrick May is not more important then the other two. But he is the only one always giving the interviews. So I think that he sees himself as the representative of Detroit and Techno. And that he takes that role very serious.
I get the sense he's just more of a driven person. Many musicians are very "chill," laid-back people, so his more athlete-type personality might seem more agressive
Ben Thick +Ben Thick +Ben Thick On the one hand I totally agree (being a musician my self) Because musicians are in general relax and laid-back people. How ever many musicians can be driven in one thing. And that is about making music. You have to be driven to become a good musician because it takes much work and dedication to achieve that. And for that you have to be driven. But you are right that it is sort of the opposite from what there personality shows in other areas. And I think it is interesting you said it. Because It becomes very ironic that Derrick May hardly creates songs any more and focuses only on DJ'ing. What is creative but different then making your own music. (No disrespect towards DJ's because I love doing both) Because even dough Derrick May is a legend a pioneer and a great spokesmen for Techno. I think that has not released a Techno song for almost 20 years.
Sick's"T"*nine l0l
51:30 "WTF??!!"
Wow, was checking.....Derrick hasn't recorded in over 2 decades. Must be nice, you make more $ DJ'ing anyway!
Red Bull Music Academy ? Really ??? Oh man, Woe is him !
I am beginning to feel sorry for this interviewer haha Come on guys? Ok the guy has a bad accident and a bit stupid sense of humour. But at least he is having this interview with him.
+RJen Miller I agree, Derrick is a great guy and a true originator, but it takes two to have a conversation. Perhaps Derrick wasn't in the mood to be 100% cooperative on this occasion.
Why the heck are the hosts for the Redbull Music Academy videos always so dull and uninterested in the artists they are interviewing. I mean, come on, that is Derrick May for fucks sake! Show a bit of enthusiasm.
Maybe it is because he is German. :P He also does not have a sense of humor even when he thinks he is being funny :P On the other hand I prefer this then some over the top American talk show host with a audience where they put up signs saying when people should clap ;)
RJen Miller No this goes for the majority of the RBMA videos I've seen. And why use a german guy if you're in in Melbourne anyway? :P Though I agree with you on the last part, I like that they make it a bit casual with people asking questions. But when the audience are more lively and ask more interesting questions than the host, then something is wrong, in my opinion. :)
i think they have good chhemistry or how u say
yep. there's this other guy who (interviewing a polite & eloquent Hawtin) got me really upset at a certain point. Shows nearly no enthusiasm at all. Maybe they are not allow to sleep during that time.
This was incredibly uncomfortable to listen to. both because the sound was AWFULL.. the drilling?!? wtf.. and derricks persona was hideous. Approching another man with that attitude seems very disrespectful. again, we dont know if something had happened right before the interview started, that sat him in that mood. but this whole interview seems very unprofessional and unsetting
