I'm pretty sure that few if any of today's bands work with this method with the emphasis now being on the number of singles that can be cut from the album for the billboard charts. Shame really, bands in the true sense of the word (writing and playing their own music like in the supergroup era) are a thing of the past. Pat, I was lucky enough to be there with you. Saw the band 4 times live, with and without Roger. I LOVE when young people discover their music, and they realize WHY it endures. Best wishes to you.
I saw them live before this album and then a live performance before the album was released. Absolutely THE best album of all time. I never get tired of it and listen to it all the TIME. 🙏
Pink Floyd have NEVER failed to raise the little hairs on the back of my neck. When 'Dark Side of the Moon' was released, it changed my musical taste forever. I appreciate your appreciation
It is interesting to see people listen to this for the first time. The lyrics are so important to this song but it takes about 5 listens until you actually pay attention to them. Until then you enjoy the musical journey you are on. They create a soundscape, and they bury lyrical gems inside it.
Yes! This song is so much about time that the feeling and meaning changes as the listener ages. In my 20s the guitar work soothed me and made me smile. In my 60s, the lyrics make me look back and reflect on my life. I can no longer listen to this song without it bringing tears to my eyes. "Shorter of breath and one day closer to death" hits hard and too close to home.
Billboard Top 200 for 962 weeks in total. The album has sold over 45 million copies and even now on a slow week between 8,000 and 9,000 copies are sold.
Yes yes, this album was on the charts for 741 weeks from 1973 to 1988. People pick out a few favorite songs from the album but the real beauty is to listen to the whole album with headphones from start to finish to get the full feel of the fluid into each song and the whole album. The fluid from one song to the next is just brilliant and at the end you feel good at home.
The next song on this same album, The Great Gig in the Sky, will blow you away. I guarantee you won't get anything like what you expect. One of the singular vocal performances in all of popular music -- and it still gets radio airplay.
@@quasidiem99 I believe the first take she tried do-wahs and other back-up harmony syllables. Then she tried scat with mostly nonsense words until they told her what they wanted -- just her singing with no words at all. So she came up with using her vocal pitch and intonation as an instrument without her speaking voice. Clare Tory then ran through the whole thing in one take. And then I think they had her try the second half in a few ways, but really, that was it. In under, like, twenty minutes, she has it all laid down, ready for editing. It was so good, so iconic to the song, that she got writing credits for it (though Roger Waters specifically opposed that for many years, and she had to fight him for the credit).
Back in the 1970s we used to listen to this album while on watch on the flight deck of the Aircraft Carrier USS Ranger. That album plus the gently rolling of the seas in south east Asia was a way of really getting in touch with your real self. I have been in love with this album for over 50 years.
I think you are completely right: 50 years ago their music was ahead of their time, and now.. it still is! It is a special brand of music, and its about time we admit it! Thank you for reacting to Pink Floyds Time!
This Album is a part of my life. Allmost as long as i listen to music, i listen the darkside of the moon album. But also the wish you where here album is fantastic in the same way.
Things to note about this song. The metronome with the heartbeat behind it makes time existential. Nick mason on the rototoms. Gilmour singing the verse and Rick Wright singing the chorus. Gilmour's solo mirrors the verse and chorus. The background vocalists foreshadow Clare Torry's vocals on "Great Gig In the Sky" to close out side 1 of the album. That seamless segue from "Time" to the third verse of "Breathe" called "Breathe, Reprise" which transitions the topic of running out of time to that of death with "Great Gig...". Naturally that would be your next selection.
Each song is a masterpiece, but you need to listen to the entire album in one sitting to really appreciate how and why this was (and remains) one of Rock's most iconic pieces.
I love watching people discover Pink Floyd for the first time! I grew up with Floyd 50 years ago and their music is just as relevant today. Enjoy the ride.
The poetry in these lyrics is sublime: turn up the volume, close your eyes, let your mind float away ⏳⏰⏲️⌚⏱️🕰️ You are young and life is long, and there is time to kill today And then one day you find ten years have got behind you No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun And you run, and you run to catch up with the sun but it's sinking Racing around to come up behind you again The sun is the same in a relative way but you're older Shorter of breath and one day closer to death
This solo is one of my favorites ever. It expresses things that words can not articulate. This entire album takes me to times and places that scarcely exist in memories, but endlessly reverberate in my soul, that echo through the fabric of my being...
my first experiance was in 1975 the wish you were here tour and i been hooked ever since..by the way im 55 now and still got the concert shirt from that very show
The engineering on this album is phenomenal. Listen to how loud those clocks are!! They were actually real clocks set up in front of mics, that's how they did things back then, so much work and passion put into making albums like this, no clicking of a mouse or plug-ins or anything.
This could possibly and subjectively be the best song ever written. Especially to me since the lyrics hit home pretty close. I missed the starting gun and now I’m almost 40 😭😭 lol
Pink Floyd makes albums made to be listened to cover to cover. It’s no wonder why they’re work is still appreciated to this day. No one makes albums anymore.
I mean perfect comment. Open minded. Tuned in to what is so powerful about that song. Maybe one of the best guitar solos. Taking you out of your mind and giving you something to ponder. Love it, Glad you liked it. You should check out any documentary on the making of that album. Truest statement is 50 years and this not only holds up but could blow away any rock music today. It is a special album. Wish you were here is a VERY close second. Enjoyed the video friend
In '89 aged 14 I got my first 'proper' stereo - a Sony stack with double tape deck, CD player and turntable. I started to go through my Dad's pretty extensive record collection (with his encouragement), and found this cool looking record with the prism on the front. I stayed up all night with headphones on smoking cigarettes out my bedroom window just captivated by this work of art. Became a Pink Floyd fan that night and I was lucky enough to eventually see them on the pulse tour - another unforgettable night in my life. Sadly Pops is gone now, but when I listen to Floyd it feels like I'm still connected to him, and it warms my heart to see another generation discovering this timeless music. Can't wait to see that you think of 'Great Gig in the Sky', you got a new sub, I can see you're a true music lover.
This is one of those albums that demands a straight through listen from start to finish. It is such a coherent piece of art. Every track is better in its context of the album.
The guitar rifts and solos are second to none along side the drums but you cannot help but be enchanted by the haunting backing vocals and the very clever keyboard sounds. This is what makes Pink floyd great, all of these fantastic artists playing together! Peace,Love and Unity 🙏
This song has probably the best lyrics of their songs to me. They always make me think about not wasting my time and it pushes and inspires me to practice playing instruments and practice painting and drawing which I have decided to learn now at age 45. I know I won't be master in drawing or painting anymore, but I want to be decent to make things that I can watch without cringing :). But when I'm actually old, I probably will be happy that I started and didn't give up. Also I do enjoy already the process of making something of my own.
Can't believe so many people out there are still discovering the magic of Pink Floyd been listening to them for most of my life and they react as though it's totally new music- but then it is timeless.
Time is not only my all time favorite Pink Floyd song, it's in my top 3 favorites of all music. The arrangement, the vocals, the lyrics, the persistent heartbeat and that solo oh man.. I've loved this song for 40 years and I can tell you this bro..40 years from now, your reaction to your first time hearing this, will be identical to your 5000th time. Time is Timeless
I was 15 when this album came out. Time was a great song then but today it means so much more. Shorter of breath and one day closer to death..that line hits home!
Absolutely, all the best albums are like that. Albums that are simply collections of songs, rather than a story, a journey, a work of art... pale in comparison.
Especially Dark Side, which only has 1 gap (between great gig, and money) and that only exists because back in the 70's you had to turn over the vynyl record.
The members of Pink Floyd are simple great musician who took music to a new level that will be played and remembered generations from now. I personally like the way they took a concept and developed an album around it. The first side of Dark Side of the Moon encapsulates a life. From birth with the songs Breath and Speak to Me, to the stages of adulthood with On the Run and Time, to death with Great Gig in the Sky. It’s these connections to being human that make their music “timeless”.
You are incredibly fortunate that you were blessed with the ability to “feel” music. I can see it in your face. Unfortunately, not everyone has that luxury. Shine on….
After the clock sounds, that's a metronome. A lot of truth in this song. Some of the best musicians and music ever! I was 19 when this album came out. Hope you listen to the entire Dark Side of the Moon album without interruption as the songs blend together. It's a masterpiece.
According to Wikipedia, the "metronome sound" was produced by Roger Waters plucking two muted strings on his bass guitar; though it has been speculated that the sound may have been produced using an EMS Synthi AKS synthesizer.
It never ceases to amaze me , this album was released in the mid 70's, and it still affects people to this day , Pink Floyd is timeless, I think it'll still be listened to 100 yrs from now
FTB - As you've now entered into the journey of the ultimate musical rabbits hole. The deeper you go the greater the experience. Yes, recorded almost 50 years completely using only analog technology, nothing digital. Their unsurpassed genius of artistry, creativity and innovation is and will be timeless. Enjoy! :) I'd recommend exploring this entire album in order as it tells a story.
My dad used to play this album to us on a Sunday while we waited for the top 40 on the radio in the 70s he would close the curtains and put time on, it was magical as a child listening to this..Thanks , love from Leeds England
It is one of the most meaningful songs ever written - make the most of your life, you're not here that long. I find it wonderful that people are still discovering and liking the music I have loved for half a century. The guitar of David Gilmour has that effect, few get as much emotion as he does.
That's actually a misconception. It's the songwriting that makes the solos sound great. Any decent guitar player that can take it slow sounds great soloing over Waters' chords.
This album entered the charts when I was in the 2nd grade. It was STILL in the charts when I was a serving soldier in the Australian Army in 1988......
Dark Side of the Moon, and Time in particular, are so great because they capture the musicality of the band at a peak moment, but do so exploring universal themes. Every human being ages and comes to understand we all have an expiration date. We live with that knowledge and struggle not to let it discourage us and to find moments of joy and happiness when things appear to be darkening. And somehow, some way, Claire Tory's solo on Great Gig in the Sky captures that experience when the emotions are beyond words. It's a trule sublime album.
Pink Floyd Open Air in Mannheim Germany on the 18th June 1988 - a concert still burned into my mind never to forget - best ever - thus far no one could touch it - and i doubt anyone will ---
I was at this concert in Vancouver Canada when they came. Damn it was a wonderful show. They just came on stage in jeans and dark Ts, turned out the lights and started to play. I have to say it was the best sound system I had ever listened to at that time.
Fantastic Fact: The Clocks U Hear At The Beginning Of This Track Were Actually Recorded At A Local Clock Shop In London In 1972 During The Production Of This Record...The Proprietor Of The Clock Shop Set All The Clocks To Chime Simultaneously...
I remember falling asleep one evening whilst playing Dark side of the moon. I woke up to the bells and started getting ready for work. 😅 Before it dawned on me, only young. Thank you for a genuine reaction.
"One of these Days" from Pink Floyd's album "Meddle" is great. It isn't played much because it only has twelve distorted words of lyrics, but it is sonically amazing.
I absolutely love watching reactions from first-timers listening to Pink Floyd. I first heard this album when I was 16. Fifty years ago. And got hooked. That album is one of the best rock albums you will ever hear. It's all quality.....lyrics, musicianship, layers and textures, spaces between..... so much in the background.. Enjoying that guitar? Speaking to you isn't it? The steel breeze.
It is great to see younger people to take the time and actually give this era of music a chance. Good music is timeless and some of the music from the late 70's into the late 80's issome of the best real music you are gonna hear. There was actual musical artists being recorded. They sounded just as good if not better live than recorded. Pink Floyd had some of the best concerts I have ever been to. It was a full on enveloping experience, even while sober. Many people got high before and during concerts, but I never did. I did not want to miss one note or any of the light show. I think pink Floyd was the first to use lasers and concentrated beam lighting to give it kind of a futuristic space feel.
I remember my Dad listening to this from a very early age, I’ve been a Floyd fan since and had the privilege of seeing this album performed live, welcome to the Floyd fan club man!
As many will tell you, the best way to experience Pink Floyd, especially this album (Dark Side Of The Moon) is to listen to it from start to finish in one sitting. It's not a collection of songs. It's one cohesive piece of music from start to finish. It always thrills me to see someone else experience Floyd for the first time. I can never have that experience again. Although I STILL get chills during the intro to Time, or the entire duration of Great Gig In The Sky, or countless other Floyd songs. They were, and still are, the best there is.
Great Reaction. Now listen to this in silence, in solitude, in the dark with headphones and play the whole seamless Album and ENJOY...😀 Now you know how I felt as I saw them on their Tour in West London with 18,000 others and my abiding memory, in 1973 was a PLANE inside the arena(I don't know how they did it as the arena had a roof.) 😀 It was groundbreaking but where have the last 49 years gone? Flown by, like that plane !
Yup, I saw them at the old Chicago Stadium. We were in the first row of the balcony, with the stage straight in front of us. Suddenly the plane appeared over our heads, heading for the stage where it crashed behind the drummer. I haven't been the same since...
I was 19 when this LP was released in the UK. And you may not believe this but it wasn't considered ahead of it's time back then. It fitted in perfectly with other bands I was listening to or seeing live in concert at that time, including Yes, Genesis, Atomic Rooster, King Crimson, ELP, Jethro Tull, Caravan, Wishbone Ash and more. The early 1970s British Prog Rock scene was huge, diverse, creative and flourishing due to all these bands with their different sounds, united by flawless song writing, great musicianship and great production values. Not only that but they were only a few years older than me. And that was also the time where British rock/blues, heavy metal, and psychedelic bands were in the mix too through Led Zepelin, The Who, Free/Bad Company, Black Sabbath, Uriah Heep, Deep Purple, ELO, The Rolling Stones etc. I am now 69 and I am elated to see young people, like yourself, experience music like Dark Side Of The Moon and appreciate it in the context of what else is out there currently. Cool reaction. Well done and thank you.

In this world of instant gratification, Pink Floyd makes you wait.
It's worth it!!!!!!
Nuff said!
I'm so happy to see the younger generations discovering music I grew up on.
I've been listening to this album since it was released. I still listen to it several times each year. It's great when younger people hear this and actually appreciate it. Some reactors fake it, but you seemed for real, and I'm so glad
Same here...I was around 14 at the time this was releasedthis is the album that propelled me into radio, until it got far too commercial, and satellite radio took hold, but this band will never NOT be a great band...Rock ON!!
Pat, I was lucky enough to be there with you. Saw the band 4 times live, with and without Roger. I LOVE when young people discover their music, and they realize WHY it endures. Best wishes to you.
Couldn't agree more.
Ditto
Everyone needs to listen to Floyd, it will be a better society 🧐
Insightful
Brilliant lyrics: The sun is the same in a relative way but you're older.
@Jeff Martin I find that even the existentialism calms me especially on shrooms, they really are just the best.
I will never get tired of people experiencing Pink Floyd songs for the the first time.
This album spent over 700 weeks in the Billboard Top 100... literally years continuously in the charts
Yes , around 14 years and I saw them debut this with 18,000 others at Earls Court, West London and the ticket cost £1..lol
Billboard Top 200 for 962 weeks in total. The album has sold over 45 million copies and even now on a slow week between 8,000 and 9,000 copies are sold.
Decades, actually
Though not their album most recently on the charts - Animals hit #21 October 1, 2022.
@@MrZcar350 Animals (2018) has just been remastered, that's why.
It's good to warm my bones beside the fire.
They periodically reconfigure the charts, we are at 966 weeks now, non-continuous. It drops out, then comes back in.
The next song on this same album, The Great Gig in the Sky, will blow you away. I guarantee you won't get anything like what you expect. One of the singular vocal performances in all of popular music -- and it still gets radio airplay.
I think she did it in one take. lol.
@@willcool713 Great background story
My dad had a theory about how they got her to sing like that...

We have been saying it for years.
Pink Floyd music exists outside of time and space. It just.. is.
Waddya mean ahead of its time? lt was immediately on release a massive hit.
ahead of your time ,not ahead of their time, they were right on time
i agree...but 2 years before DSOTM was released another album ahead of its time was released " Electric Worrior " by T.Rex........give it a listen
And Alan Parsons of the Alan Parsons Project was the studio engineer and created the clocks going off at the beginning.
The “heartbeat” during the Roto Tom section is not a metronome, it’s actually Roger Waters’s bass. He’s playing muted strings with a guitar pick.
@@howardbrandemusic2380 A side note on Alan Parsons. He was the tape operator for The Beatles during Let it Be.
Each song is a masterpiece, but you need to listen to the entire album in one sitting to really appreciate how and why this was (and remains) one of Rock's most iconic pieces.
I don't have to imagine what it was like when this came out in1973 I was 17 and I was there.
I was 15, and they are still my favorite band
I was 7. It took me another 8 or 9 years to discover this masterpiece.
TeeHee, I lost my virginity to this album
You're old
@@makjanks So what
I have been living Pink Floyd’s music since the early 70s, and still love it just as much. They always had something to say.
I love watching people discover Pink Floyd for the first time! I grew up with Floyd 50 years ago and their music is just as relevant today. Enjoy the ride.
The music is great. The message in the lyrics is even more important.
The poetry in these lyrics is sublime: turn up the volume, close your eyes, let your mind float away
⏳⏰⏲️⌚⏱️🕰️
You are young and life is long, and there is time to kill today
And then one day you find ten years have got behind you
No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun
And you run, and you run to catch up with the sun but it's sinking
Racing around to come up behind you again
The sun is the same in a relative way but you're older
Shorter of breath and one day closer to death
It’s such a pleasure seeing someone experience Pink Floyd for the first time.
They were actually real clocks set up in front of mics, that's how they did things back then, so much work and passion put into making albums like this, no clicking of a mouse or plug-ins or anything.
tube amps and all!
Alan Parsons
@@pepeperez2774 Yep!
plus at the start after alarms it not a heart beat its the sound of clock ticking.
Been listening to pink floyd for all my life but this song becomes more relevant to me now than when I first listened to it it’s a masterpiece
What mesmerizes me is the background singers!
This could possibly and subjectively be the best song ever written. Especially to me since the lyrics hit home pretty close. I missed the starting gun and now I’m almost 40 😭😭 lol
I've been listing too Pink Floyd for moat of my 55 years and I still feel the same way you did this first time.
Pink Floyd makes albums made to be listened to cover to cover. It’s no wonder why they’re work is still appreciated to this day. No one makes albums anymore.
Welcome in the fantastic world of " Floyd "! It will take you a lifetime to get their music! And it should be!
So pleased that you really are enjoying it. I am over 79 and it still moves me.🇦🇺
I mean perfect comment.
David Gilmour and his guitar playing R I think the most iconic thing about Pink Floyd. He really does take guitar playing to a whole another level
My favourite band ever. Luckily I did see them live five times.
I'm totally jealous. Never saw them live. I must have been a great experience.
Good choice but forme it's Echoes, Stairway to Heaven and Suppers Ready.
Listen to it after smoking a joint. Mind BLOWN.
I was 15 when this album came out. Time was a great song then but today it means so much more. Shorter of breath and one day closer to death..that line hits home!
The goat of all albums..
I love how Floyd would make sounds feel like they travel through you from one side to another
Their albums are meant to be listened to without interruption; not individual songs, a continuous story
@@lollington_bear I remember doing exactly that!
Some are.
In their contract the songs could not be released separately but only the album in its entirety. This was ignored and Floyd sued and won
regardless, it is meant to represent the ticking of a clock, in counterpoint to the beating heart sound
Listen with friends in a comfortable darkened basement lit only by black light and gaze, as you listen, at your black light posters.
@@420since1974 On his "Us + Them" tour, Waters indeed played that tick tock sound by alternate picking two muted strings on his bass.
It never ceases to amaze me , this album was released in the mid 70's, and it still affects people to this day , Pink Floyd is timeless, I think it'll still be listened to 100 yrs from now

Dark side of the moon spent 23 years in the album charts, many of the years at the number 1 slot, the whole album is genius
I was 13 yo when I first listened this song. Now I'm 43 and fells like the first time all over again. I love Pink Floyd!
Incredible sound so far. Nothing like it🤘🏽
Dark Side of the Moon, and Time in particular, are so great because they capture the musicality of the band at a peak moment, but do so exploring universal themes.
Dude, you got it. The wavy nature of their music makes a swirling mass of color behind your eyes….and you gotta “roll” with it!
The Pulse version has those Pigs though!
Great version they did in Pompey theatre 1972....its on you tube
That’s always been 1 of my favorite guitar solos. Simple, yet so powerful. Beautiful.
Simply the BEST guitar solo ever written. Period.
Brilliant
I remember my Dad listening to this from a very early age, I’ve been a Floyd fan since and had the privilege of seeing this album performed live, welcome to the Floyd fan club man!
I was mesmerized by this album when first came out and immediately bought it. Still one of my all time favs to this day
So I've been listening to Pink Floyd for over 50 years and it just seems to have gotten better every one of them.
Now listen to this in silence, in solitude, in the dark with headphones and play the whole seamless Album and ENJOY...😀

Now you know how I felt as I saw them on their Tour in West London with 18,000 others and my abiding memory, in 1973 was a PLANE inside the arena(I don't know how they did it as the arena had a roof.) 😀 It was groundbreaking but where have the last 49 years gone? Flown by, like that plane !
He's so right, I saw that plane crash beyond the stage in the old Boston Garden! I still get flashbacks from their shows.
Yup, I saw them at the old Chicago Stadium. We were in the first row of the balcony, with the stage straight in front of us. Suddenly the plane appeared over our heads, heading for the stage where it crashed behind the drummer. I haven't been the same since...
The best way brother.
Ian Davey?
@@sbnqy I used to go to school with him but he was not as talented as Ian Dury..
I grew up in the 80's listening to Pink Floyd albums over and over again in my room. No other music has ever had the same effect on me.
Well said, The 70's were an awesome time if you liked music. Bands were touring all over
the place. The Day on the Green Concerts were $6.00, 5 - 7 bands jambing all day. Shedmen
It's been said that Pink Floyd's guitarist David Gilmour doesn't use an amplifier.... he plugs his guitar straight into your soul!
Music can be the most pure expression of emotion we can make. It is really cool to see someone experience something like this for the first time.
Its amazing that he recorded the lead break in one take. turned up at the studio, cranked it out , and the said," That should do it.". Then he unplugged the guitar and walked out into the street.
Gilmour’s tone is otherworldly. Reaches down and grabs something in the soul.
Incredible.
I bought my first Pink Floyd album in 1969 (Ummagumma) and saw them live in 1971 and 4 more times after that. For me This is the BEST band of all times. Now I'm 71 years old and still listen to them everyday.
