This original version of the song is one of my favourites From Software have ever made. It touches on something so profoundly sorrowful and full of longing, while also harbouring a sense of remorse. After all, you did this. You are the one who craves souls. You are the one who betrayed the world, literally stepping on your closest ally in order to take the power of the Old One - a power you'll get to enjoy alone in a doomed world of soul-starved hollows until it fully fades into the colourless fog. Simply gorgeous.
The original demon’s Souls OST was done by a composer they have not used again, his is much more minimalist, diverse, and low key, but no less brilliant than their others. Fromsoft didn’t start kicking it into bombast until the late DS2 DLC / Bloodborne era. Then they go full bombast in DS3 and Bluepoint follows suit in the Demon’s Souls remake with more instruments and much more choir vocals for the re-imagined soundtracks. This is the music that plays during the credits of the dark ending of the game. You choose to damn the world by accepting to serve the cosmic entity that is slowly destroying it.
@@skalgabbe630 He is still credited as composer since the re-arranged scores are all based on his original work, but as far as I know, he didn't have any hand in rebuilding them based on short youtube making of video for the music the music producers put out on YT. @@SwedetasticGames One of the things I love the most about the OST is how it feels like an orchestral piece played only by a few remaining instruments. It's like there was supposed to be a full orchestra there but now only few players remain, playing the same motifs over and over, slowly forgetting what the original piece even was like. The music in the nexus is like a solo player who's trying to remember a tune and gets stuck over and over, looping the same notes with huge pauses where they can't remember what comes after. I first picked up Demon's Souls about a week after it came out. I was at a Gamestop and the cover art looked cool. The cashier's exact words when I brought it to him were "Are you sure man? People have been returning this saying it's too hard." At that time there was an issue in the gaming sphere with everything being extremely casual if it wasn't PvP based. I remember spending a solid 8 hours on Flamelurker because I did not understand any of the mechanics in the game and was fat rolling. I remember fighting the final real boss in the game and losing like 30 soul levels without realizing it until it dawned on me that I was much weaker than I was when I first started fighting him. I remember encountering invaders at the start of the skeleton world that would spam poison cloud/plague cloud and roll around laughing at me. I remember letting the main menu loop over and over when I was taking breaks to de-stress or eat something and wanting to get right back into it. It was a really good experience and probably drug me back from the brink of quitting gaming, because everything had just become too easy. Looking back now Demon's Souls is easy, too, but when it was current it really was a step above most of what was current at the time. Zelda for adults was how I put it to people who asked me about it back then.
My oldest brother imported Demon's Souls from South Korea (not at all familiar with the language) so us three bros played it in Korean day and night for weeks before the NA release... Ever since your very first Fromsoft reaction, I have waited for you to react to Demons Souls ... AND YOU FINALLY DID IT!!! 🥳🎉 You should also react to the song 'Return to Slumber' which I would say is the counterpart to this song (One who craves Souls plays during the 'bad ending' and Return to Slumber plays during the 'good ending') ... Great video as always! 😁✨️
agreed. I mean they even kept in glitches and bugs from the original to maintain the same experience. I just wish there was an option for the original soundtrack
This song has been one of my favourite From pieces for over a decade. The longing for something better in the violin, the endless forward movement of the timpani regardless of how much the piano wants you to look back. Your craving for souls led you to betray those who relied on you, to betray the world in which they lived. In the moments between you may remember their faces and think on what could have been, but its too late for regrets; the Old One hungers. Bring more souls, Slayer of Demons.
I remember getting this played on a viewer request stream of yours awhile ago. Such a good song, and so unexpectedly chill for a FROMSOFT track. Great to see a dedicated video for it!
I would love to recommend another OST I'm sure you haven't heard yet, and that is the Burnt Ivory King from Dark Souls II. I'm sure you would love listening to that one
I played the original and love the atmosphere! Demons souls have the best hub music of them all (I think it’s called “The black maiden”) both eerie and oh so soothing!
what i have to say about it is that i miss when from iddn't go 100% all the time full orchestra, don't take me wrong elden ring has some nice osts, demon's souls and dark souls 1 were something else for me,e sepecially their save menu/character creator menu themes.
I said this on another video (and honestly im not sure if you even take requests) but i would love for you to check out some splatoon music. You will be in for a WILD ride. Theres soo much variety and the game has ingame bands and artists with lore. The devs are very passionate with the music. What makes it so unique is that there arent real lyrics. The music is largely composed of a gibberish language over a “watery” vocal filter. They even have live concerts irl! Some songs id recommend are Anarchy Rainbow, Entropical, Frothy Waters, Don’t Slip, and Tide Goes Out. I love hearing your thoughts on video game music, and i think this game would be a fun listen :)
Demon's Souls on the PS3 was my second Fromsoft soulslike after vanilla DS2. I've since played and completed many times over Bloodborne, DS3 and DS remastered. Working through Sekiro now. And my hardware can't handle Elden Ring. I think Demon's Souls might be my favourite game of all time and certainly my favourite Souls title.
I AM IN LOVE WITH THIS SONG. Especially this version of it tbh. Easily my favorite song from Demon's Souls which is saying something because the original OST was amazing across the board
FromSoft's music always hits hard, the hopefulness of it with the increase in tension is super cool. Random aside, but I highly recommend giving "Through Patches of Violet" from Limbus Company a listen.
One of my favorites from the game. I love the original version but I also really like the remake version too. Both soundtracks can stand on their own two feet and are both masterpieces
This song very much gives me the impression of climbing a mountain. An unfathomably difficult but rewarding experience that instills a sense of pride. "Can I really do this? No I have to do it. The peak calls and I must make it to the top! I will claim this mountain as my own!" I think the given the nature of souls in these games the title could also have worked as "One Who Craves Power" or "One Who Craves Strength". It's really a great piece that gets slept on more than it should these days.
Demons Souls OST really has a certain minimalism, I would assume due to a smaller budget, that the later games don't. I feel like the limitations the composer had to work with forced them to use everything much more carefully and purposefully. I love the music that plays in the nexus (the hub of the game) as it uses fairly long pauses of silence to really great effect and really nails the atmosphere. Hearing the results of someone taking so little and really making something is truly captivating for me.
I played the original when it was still widely unknown. While browsing online stores i discovered it by chance. The description sounded so different, that i wanted to try it out. (Also the cover Artwork with the fallen Knight looked bad ass) Little that i know how many hours i would sink into this game. This, I come back to it every couple of months ever since I first played the game in 2010, and it's haunting as ever. You should listen to the remake version as well and compare them. They definitely made updates and changes to the score that affect the emotion of the piece.
I was (and still am) extremely disappointed that they redo the soundtrack for the remake but they made it much more bombastic, and with no option of using the originals at all.
Have you listened to the music from Transformers:Fall of Cybertron? Especially these couple of incredible pieces to check out: the main title theme, and “Till all are one”. I’d also recommend checking out the prologue level after listening to “Till all are one”. Though maybe it would be better to start with stuff from War For Cybertron(the first game of the duo); but it’s up to you entirely.
This has to be my favourite track from Demons' Souls. It's a shame in order to hear it in the game you need to pick a bad ending. Listen to the remake version of this song Marco, you will see how different it is but also packed with emotion.
I know it's not very trendy right now, but you MUST LISTEN TO ATOMIC HEART'S OST. Very funky CCP era Russian music with a ton of electronically-remixed old music + lyrics and some BANGER original pieces. It has some incredibly hard-hitting metal too and the DLCs don't hold back either. My personal favorites are PT-1X12 (referencing Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture), Colossus BEA-D and Cookie Crumbler (basically 3 very energetic metal pieces). The second DLC is set in a silly dream world so it has more of a goofy tone with its music. Overall, insane variety and a very fresh cultural wind coming from this game, I love it. If you liked Doom's and Ultrakill's OST, you'll love the metal ones, plus you're an opera singer & vc so I'm not even doubting you'll love the Soviet-adjacent tracks too.
I highly recommend the Omori OST (and maybe a playthrough!) because it's just amazing, it does a lot right in the music department, and has similar inspirations to undertale (stuff like EarthBound and Yume Nikki)
The remastered version of Demon Souls music is so good. Honestly both versions Original and Remastered capture different moments that I love both profoundly!
I like how you react to Different Video Game Music's it's so different than anything I've ever seen. I would recommend you to react Armor clad faith from Guilty Gear Strive, It's very good in my opinion
The Context of the song is the bad ending song. You have 2 options to end the game a good ending and a bad one. The good ending you help Maiden in Black put the Old One (the supreme demon that's corrupting the world.) to sleep which the ending song is "Return to Slumber". Which is theorized to be Maiden in Black singing to put the old one to sleep. The bad ending leads you to kill Maiden in Black and embrace the Old Ones Demon soul and you let the Demon Art's corrupt the world. This ending leads to "One Who Craved Souls" ending song which is supposed to present the horror and how much you betrayed humanity. Like "WHAT HAVE YOU DONE?". The remakes soundtrack is not bad (far from it) but they missed the point in a lot of songs. Especially Flamelurker, Phalanx, and One Who Craved Souls.
I’m a college student and trying to be careful with money, I really hope you listen to a Grasping Truth from FE: Radiant Dawn. Not many people react to it and it’s more on the obscure side, but please man.
my favorite part of demon's souls was the boss at the end that could steal your levels away from you, that's some old school rpg bs, and it gave me flashbacks to older games.
I suggest to listen to the original demon's souls OST and make a comparison with the remaster. A LOT has been lost when remaking the music, changing a decadent and funerary vibe for more classic epic sound. The OST of the original game is still unmatched by every other souls game OST when it comes to making you feel pure dread and loneliness
Demon Souls was my introduction to FromSoft, on the ps3. It has to be the most hopeless out of all of the games. Ostrava on his quest only to end in the way he does...
Marco please, it would be awesome if you react to Amygdala from Bloodborne, I think is a really interesting theme because I find some similarities with Gehrman's theme.
The main thing the remake did well was quality of life features, animation, and graphics. Everything else was a downgrade imo. Including the music. The original music was so low-key and atmospheric while the new music just wants to sound like a completely different game in a way i don't think it benefitted from. There's only a couple tracks i think worked well. Mainly the penetrator theme, since he didn't have his own unique theme in the original game
Maybe you've heard of this request before, but I recommend giving World of Warcraft and Warcraft 3 a listen, there's some beautiful classical pieces in there.
I kind of like that the original and the remake both have their own vibe to them, the old songs were amazing but the new ones are good in their own right too

Hey Marco, if you plan on doing more demons souls i suggest you listen to both versions and compare them.
Would be nice to hear your thoughts on Maiden Astraea. Remake and original versions are very different but both are amazing songs.
Thanks, original ost is👌💰
My soft spot of this ost is harpsichord.
I highly recommend the Omori OST (and maybe a playthrough!) because it's just amazing, it does a lot right in the music department, and has similar inspirations to undertale (stuff like EarthBound and Yume Nikki)
it took you so long to react to this! go listen to the remake as well, although this is more feeling-inducing
Cool idea, you could listen to some of the original and then their remakes, and compare then in that emotional way
The remastered version of Demon Souls music is so good. Honestly both versions Original and Remastered capture different moments that I love both profoundly!
Day after day official mv from Armored core v please.
Kota and Yuka are the vocal and violin.
You should listen to Epic the musical, its based off Homer's odyssey, and inspired by anime and video games.
I only cover vgm but it sounds cool! Heard good thing!
I know it is not video games, but i would love to hear your takes on Epic the Musical.
"Scylla", i really think you would love
The maiden Astraea OST is the best in des imo - the original, that is.
Would like to know how you think the remake version sounds in comparison with the original of this song
I don’t know if you have already, but please listen to the Burnt Ivory King OST, it’s sooooooo good
I like how you react to Different Video Game Music's it's so different than anything I've ever seen.
At last , demon's souls 😭.
Please react to maiden astraea and flamelurker osts ❤
Demon Souls was my introduction to FromSoft, on the ps3. It has to be the most hopeless out of all of the games.
Ostrava on his quest only to end in the way he does...
yeah the new one is amazing looking and amazing game but man the og is just wow.
Sorry about being off topic but Marco, can you listen to sekiro's "Gentle blade". Or just more sekiro soundtracks. I think they are pretty underrated
Marco please, it would be awesome if you react to Amygdala from Bloodborne, I think is a really interesting theme because I find some similarities with Gehrman's theme.
Could you do Maiden Astraea for the original Demon's Souls?
This is captain bones approved
Did you try Indra or Itachi theme from the Naruto anime?
Ah. My favorite track that ISN’T in the remake (it technically IS, but the remade song sounds practically NOTHING like the old version)
Aldia, Scholar of the First Sin from DS2 plzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
Which Boss’ theme is this?
The main thing the remake did well was quality of life features, animation, and graphics.
Everything else was a downgrade imo. Including the music. The original music was so low-key and atmospheric while the new music just wants to sound like a completely different game in a way i don't think it benefitted from. There's only a couple tracks i think worked well. Mainly the penetrator theme, since he didn't have his own unique theme in the original game
Maybe you've heard of this request before, but I recommend giving World of Warcraft and Warcraft 3 a listen, there's some beautiful classical pieces in there.
Disregard, am stupid
Not stupid. I have too many videos lol
@@MarcoMeatball Nah, not enough :)
You should react to the original Demon's Souls theme, not the remake, the original.
Please review the music of STEELRISING!
react to the remake too, you will love it. it's not bad like most people say.
I kind of like that the original and the remake both have their own vibe to them, the old songs were amazing but the new ones are good in their own right too
Oh my god you should so listen to the original game's soundtrack, it's very quirky but so unique, especially compared to the remake
Could you react to "The Crimson Flame of Disaster - Crimson Fatalis Theme"? I love OSTs for all the emotions that come through these sounds and I love your videos. The best in the reaction of OSTs. It's nice to see someone who knows his subject well.
Thank you😊
Est-ce que tu pourrais réagir à "The Crimson Flame of Disaster - Crimson Fatalis Theme" ? J'adore les OST pour toutes les émotions qui passent par ces sons et j'adore tes vidéos. Les meilleures dans la réaction des OST. Ça fait plaisir de voir quelqu'un qui connaît bien son sujet.
Merci😊
Pas de problem! Bien sur! Cerais mon plaisir
yo marco would u react to left 4 dead's amazing soundtrack? im sure its right up ur alley
One of my favorite melodies to play on the piano. Although I enjoy the remake version a lot more.
